Space between Finder Window columns

A few days ago, when I upgraded my PowerBook and iMac G5 to 10.4.3, the space between the finder window columns suddenly expanded so that only four columns fit on the desktop instead of 7. It happened on both machines, so it appears not to be related to the hardware. Is this a known problem with 10.4.3? Is that parameter adjustable in Terminal?

I've noticed the same problem after the 10.4.3 upgrade and have been experimenting to see what the changes might have been, my conjecture was they changed some algorithm that was computing the autospacing..
Today after reading the posts on this issue I tried the following experiment. I selected Finder->view -> Show View Options, set the icon size to 16x16 and instead of selecting 10pt font (which was giving me the the large column spacing) I selected 12pt font. This resulted in the narrow column spacing I had previously (of course the icon names are a bit larger but gaining back the close spacing was definitely worth it).

  • Spaces and Finder windows

I have set up two Spaces, one for web/internet apps, and one for music apps.
For each space I have a set of different Finder windows open.
However, when I log off and log on again, Spaces doesn't automatically open the second space, which means the two Finder windows belonging to "space 2" gets lumped into "space 1". I therefore have to manually drag the two Finder windows to "space 2" every time I log on.
Is there a way to automatically assign these windows to the space they belong? Or is this manual step required for each login?

it seems inconsistent that Finder windows (not application windows) can be assigned to a specific space one minute, while this setting is "forgotten" when I log on.
You cannot assign a window to a workspace, you can only assign an application to a workspace - and yes, the Finder is an application. Opening a window does not assign it to anything because - repeat after me - you cannot assign a window to a workspace.
And why are you mentioning programs in connection with Finder windows
    A) because the Finder is an application so it behaves just as any other application does and B) because you still do not seem to understand that only an application can be assigned to a workspace, not a window
    Maybe I am misunderstanding something
Yes, you are, see (A) and (B) above
Maybe this will do what you want - but I doubt it. Open the System Preferences and select the Expose & Spaces control panel. Select the Spaces tab. There's a list of all the applications to which you have assigned a workspace and at the bottom left of that window pane is a plus icon. Click on it to see a list off all the running applications that haven't been assigned to a space yet. You'll see the Finder there in that list. Select it and then look for Finder in the list of applications in the Window pane. Now you can assign the Finder to a specific workspace or to all workspaces.
Play with this for a while and if you don't like Finder assigned to a single workspace or to all workspaces, you can return to the control panel and delete it.

  • 'save as' finder window settings and size (on mac)

    Hi there ~
Whenever saving/downloading any type of file from any firefox tab, and the 'save as' window opens and I choose where I want the file to be downloaded to, the finder window columns are really tight and narrow, cutting off the folder names so I constantly have to stretch out that first column so I can see the folder names .. this only happens in firefox and the finder window is always squooshed, even if I adjust it and then close/relaunch firefox .. how can I permanently set the finder window settings to avoid having to manually adjust it each time?
    thanks

Probably not the only one... the OS 9 Finder way did slow things down a bit. But it may be a helpful feature for some. Best if you could activate or not. You can file a feature request here Mac OS X Feedback

  • Invisible FInder Window

A Leopard oddity: if I use the keyboard command, ⌘-`, to switch between Finder windows, at some point in the cycle there is no Finder window selected !! All the open Finder windows are light grey. Instead, cursor keys move between (most) objects on the Desktop ! Pressing F11 makes this apparent. But is this a bug or a feature ? What is the logic behind this behavior ? It completely escapes me. I was completely surprised.

This is akin to the Windows Vista behavior of including "Desktop" when cycling through windows with Alt+Tab or Windows+Tab. Since the Desktop is basically a Finder window splayed out behind all your other windows (for example, clicking the Desktop changes the active app to the Finder), the idea was probably to include it along with all the other Finder windows while cycling through.
It probably makes it a bit easier to access the Desktop with one's keyboard.

  • Finder windows sizing and alternatives

Does anyone know how to set the default width of the finder window column style to wider? It's so small I end up opening it up every time I use it.
Or does anyone know of a better file manager?
    Thanks

There is a trick to setting default window size and position in the OS X "Finder" - default as in what applies to windows for which that hasn't been set before - and it is to open a new window, and without selecting anything in the window, arranging the window to you liking, then immediately closing the window.
With that in mind, try setting column width in "column view" by dragging the "resize bar" at the base of the column while holding down the "option" (⌥) key. Though it will have to be set independently, the same procedure seems to work for "column view" in eg. "Open" or "Save" dialogues as well.
I should mention that I'm on a 10.4 machine right now but haven't double checked to see if it works in "Panther" (this being the 10.3 section and all)...

  • WAD space between bar chart

    Hi Guru,
    I have two questions:
I used a column bar chart on WAD for my dashboard development and right now there is no space between each of column or bar. Is there a configuration setting I can use to leave some space between them. I am using BW 70 WAD.
Second question is this column chart is based on a query with filter defined. It is drillable on analyzer. Can I make this chart drillable? I want to make it drill down to more detail characteristics. Can this be done and if so, how?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Sharon

right click on the chart and edit.
and click on Refine-> then you will see all the options to setup.
-> click on Chart and there are two settings you can make the distance and overlap, that will do it for you.
Second Question: How do you want to drilldown a chart? The chart will be the screenshot of a query before the drill down, if you want the chart to display drilled downed results, then drilldown the query and save a view and attach the view to the chart.
But if you want to change the chart on specific selections, then you can have dropdown or radio button so on specific selection the chart will change as you change the selection.
    Hope that helps.
    thanks.
    Wond

  • Same Finder window is following me to every space. Please help.

So everytime I switch between a space, the same finder window is following me to every single screen. I'm not sure how to turn this off so every finder window stays on it's space seperately.

This is in Lion, so I'm using Mission Control, which is bundled with spaces. It's not called spaces anymore.

  • How do I fix the space between the bottom of my window and taskbar?

Recently (today) firefox has had a space between the bottom of the window and my taskbar. I've tried reinstalling and safe mode, and it doesnt go away. Here is a screenshot of the issue. http://imgur.com/mTQtrDN

    Nice Work.

  • The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.

The finder window for an external USB hard disk suddenly started separating files by time (today, yesterday, etc.) and stopped allowing me to change column width, order, etc. Also the header bar shifted to flat white from gray.
All was normal until the icon for the disk stopped showing up on the desktop when I would plug it in. I rebooted the computer, and the disk icon now shows up but this new look to the finder window started as a result. The hard disk does not have this problem when I use it on another Mac running Snow leopard. Also, two other external hard disks that I use on this computer running lion 7.4 still have the normal header bars with columns that can be reordered, etc.
I have tried looking in preferences and other places but have not seen this discussed.

Well duh - I finally figured out that somehow in the View options for the hard drive, the "arrange by" option had been changed to "by date" from "none". Not sure how that happened, I had never used the "view options" menu tem before. Changing "arrange by" back to "none" gets the gray column headers and the collapsible folder icons back.

  • Is it possible to set default column widths in list view when using a finder window in Mavericks?

The default 'document' column is way too wide and forces you eye to track all the way across the screen to read info like "date modified', 'kind' or 'size'.
Tried several times to create a narrower default 'document name' column with no results. Couldn't find anything in preferences or view options. Tried dragging column headers while holding the down the option key with no results.
Every time I open a new finder window, all columns except the 'document' column affixed to the right side of the window. Also, when you grab the bottom right corner of a window to resize smaller, the lists become re-affixed to the right side of the window when opening the window back up.
Experiencing the same problem in Mavericks 10.9.3 on an iMac and Macbook Pro Retina.
Thanks if you've made it this far:)

This was a great place for me to start
    Thank you
I took profdant139's suggestions a bit further as my real goal was to have the "Document column" narrower. The goal to be able to see all the other document info that was usually hidden way out to the right
To achieve my results I right clicked in the upper bar with the column names and chose from the drop down box "comments" column (as suggested). I then dragged it to the far right. This pushed all the other columns over.
In the end of the day I ended up adding "Size" and "Date modified" columns as well to get my desired results.
Remember one can move different columns around to be in the order you need by clicking on the column to get it active and then left click and drag it to where you want
Another great thing is that by default (Using Mavericks) the date modified, opened, created columns have date and time. One can shrink them down to xx/xx/xx format by manually adjusting the column width like one does in Excel - click on column separator up top and drag
Once all that is done, at least on my box, I closed it out and opened up a new finder window and everything was as I wanted.
Thank you for the help  from the above helper to get me here
