Space Designer - Loading Split Stereo IR's

Hi,
First of all please accept my apologies if this question has been answered before.
I've finally started creating presets for the 100's of IR's I have, and I just wanted to check that my assumption is correct: When attempting to load a split stereo IR, does selecting one side (say left) automatically load both sides? Based on what I can hear it seams to but i just wanted to confirm this.
The Plug-In Manual (page 120) doesn't specifically say anything about this. It just says:
"Simply browse to the desired file, and click OK. Any mono, stereo or split stereo AIFF, SDII or WAV file can be used."
Again, sorry for being so dense about all this.
Thanks in advance.

Thank so much much guys.
What's the best way of joining split stereo files? Some of the IR's weren't connected to the opposite side.
If I highlight both of them in the Audio Window and select the convert/copy command from the edit menu will that be that same as if I'd added them to the arrange window and bounced the as stereo. Ideally I'd rather not use the scond method.
Thanks again.

  • Can Space Designer import true stereo impulse responses?

SD can import a stereo impulse response, which basically functions as mono input to stereo output.
In order to do true stereo (stereo in, stereo out) requires two stereo impulse responses. Some verbs import two stereo files, others import quad files.
The manual says that SD uses true stereo, but there isn't any more information about it. It looks like there are a few true stereo presets, which have a + after the preset name and display "Discrete Circle" in the window instead of stereo, but I can't figure out what file format they are or how many channels (they are SDIR files, but looks like those can't be opened).
SD does allow importing quad files, but they show up as "no mode set" and don't sound like they're working right.
Anyone have any experience with this, I'd like to be able to use some true stereo IR's but at this point it looks like I may just have to buy another reverb plug if I can't get that working. Thanks.

it looks like that can only work with files it records itself, I don't see an option to import files.
I tried to find a way around that and I came to the same conclusion as you.
in all cases the verb was all in the right channel even though all four channels of the file had signal
I think I found a way to get results better than that, but the results still aren't really right. I've been using this file:
    L96, 01-02 Medium Hall Quad.wav
It's the same one I mentioned in the other thread. I load SD, and then I drag this file in. I don't change any SD settings before or after I drag in the file. The source material is various stereo Apple Loops, and some other test files. I have SD on an Aux, so I can easily solo the Aux and hear 100% wet signal.
The wet signal is on both sides, if there is a source signal on both sides. When the source is panned hard left, the wet signal follows, and vice versa. Instruments that start out 100% left stay that way in the wet signal.
This is better than what you got, but it's still not right. It's not what you get with the true stereo presets in SD, where a hard-panned source will produce a wet signal on both sides (but with it mostly dry on the near side and mostly wet on the far side).
they show up as "no mode set"
That's what I see, and this is probably a clue that SD is not going to use it to produce true stereo.
I can get those results consistently, but then it starts to break more dramatically if I load an SD preset (any kind at all, as far as I can tell), and then drag in the quad file. Then all sorts of strange things happen. Sudddenly I get 100% dry signal on one side, even though it should be 100% wet. Then this happens on both sides. And the problem persists when I load another preset (without dragging in the quad file again). At one point I would get a persistent loud pop on one side, followed by silence, every time I hit play.
Once it gets in this state, unloading and reloading SD doesn't fix it, and closing and opening the project doesn't fix it. But if I quit and relaunch Logic, that fixes it (although it's still not true stereo).
So I don't know how to make it really work, but maybe this will help you get closer to a solution.

  • Space Designer True Stereo Impulse Responses

I recently purchased some impulse responses. I am trying to load these into Space Designer on Logic 9.1. They have been supplied as L, R and C wav files. It says that Space Designer supports 'true stereo' impulse responses, where there is a seperate wav file for L and R. But I can't work out how to load both files? Has anyone on here successfully loaded True Stereo responses in Space Designer? The set of responses also includes 'quad' files consisting of just one stereo file - should I be using these instead?
If anyone could help/offer any advice I would be very grateful
    Many thanks

If the impulse responses are Stereo Interleaved audio files, then they load into Space Designer as true stereo impulses.
Note : make SURE you create the space Designer on a STEREO AUX or channel, otherwise its mono--->Stereo, and will load mono impulses. At least that what it does on my system. They same impulse sounds very different when fed a mono source VS a stereo source...
As for "QUAD" sources, it does not support them, at least I do not think it does.
Try loading a Space Designer on a 4-channel audio track (a QUAD) track, and see what happens.
Also, those QUAD files are probably 4 mono audio files contained in the one file. I've seen these before...

  • Space Designer True Stereo file channel config.

    X-Post
I'm trying batch convert IR's for Logic users.
I have created true stereo IR's (not with the logic impulse utility)
They are currently 2 interleaved stereo .wav files
    Left Side-Left&Right.wav
    Right Side-Left&Right.wav
For Space Designer to load true stereo it needs to see a single 4channel interleaved file? Is this correct? If so what is the channel configuration & or naming convention/header or quicktime meteadata to let SD know what to do?

Just to try to help: as you say, this is a cross-post. Perhaps if any Impulse Response Utility users would like to respond, it might be better for them to do so in the +Logic Pro 8 Forum.+ There are a lot more experts in there… you may have had a reply already by now!

  • Slow loading of IR's in Space Designer

When i load an Impulse response in space designer, it takes at least 20-30 seconds with a frozen Logic, before it loads.
I suppose Space Designer is looking for IR's but i don't know why.
    Anybody experienced the same?

Slow is not so easy to calculate...
    Slow as Seconds?
    Minutes?
They are original Apple IRs or from 3rd Party ones?
there is some warning message during loading?
How much free space size is in your System Hard Drive?
I hope more than 25 or better 30% free space of the total disk size!

  • Impulses loaded into Space Designer?

Hey does anybody know how to load impulse responses into Space Designer? Just downloaded some third party stuff and wanted to try them out. They are called "Beamsonic Impulses". Thanks

Yeah, using gates would be clumsy and buggy. What the Sonic Birth API does is is allow you to construct your own AU by instatiating actual code. But you don't have to really write the code. You drag visual modules around and link them with virtual cables. Each module is ultimately a C++ class function and you're really just building object oriented code with a GUI. There really is very little you can't do. For example, you can even attentuate output amplitudes with whatever function or equation you wish to write. Recently I wrote a fade in/fade out plug that follows exponential curves when a timing loop is started by a boolean variable switching from 0 to 1. Designing a virtual logic circuit to test the input for its amplitude is very easy and that could be used as a trigger to switch between the output of several convolutions. To the end user it would look like any other AU if you packaged the IR wave files with the plug you create and set them up as presets. The catch is that the user has to actually have the Sonic Birth framework on their machine to use it. It doesn't make a generic AU that everyone can use.
If I get this baby working I'm gonna get real excited.

  • Space designer stereo spread enigma

can anyone enlighten me as to why the stereo spread control on space designer seems more often than not to be greyed out?

Page 136 of the plug-in reference PDF...
But to get right to it, it only works on synthesized impulse responses, not IR samples, or when used on a mono track (obviously).

  • Have to load presets in Space Designer manually?

I have to load Space Designer presets in Logic 8 manually (prompt the path) after installing Logic 9 upgrade. Anybody else with the same problem?

    Thanks for your answer:
Here is what happens in my case, even with Logic 9.1 being installed.
When I open a new project in Logic 8 I can switch through the presets. However, when I save the project and reopen it again, then I need to prompt the path if I want to change a preset.

  • Trouble loading IR's in Space Designer

Ever since i upgraded to Logic 8 there have been many Space Designer IR's that won't load. I finally took the time to figure out where they were and why they wouldn't load and now i'm even more confused. For example when i choose "Small Combo Spring" (small spaces> Spring Reverbs> Small Combo Spring) I'm prompted to manually locate the IR but when i do find the pst file it's not highlighted (I'm not able to select it). If i choose to load setting manually i can choose Small Combo Spring.pst but then i'm asked to locate Small Combo Spring .SDIR which can't find. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Two things - a Space Designer plugin settings file (*.pst) is not the same thing as an impulse file.
The pst file simply contains the settings of Space Designer's GUI, and the path/name of the loaded IR file.
Now, the Space Designer presets were altered, renamed and reprogrammed for LP8, and the impulse files are different. It may be that you have left the LP7 SD pst files on your system, but had the impulse responses replaced with the LP8 ones - hence, the LP7 ones won't load.
If this is the case, you can reinstall the LP7 impulses from your LP7 disks. I'm not sure offhand whether these impulses are also in LP8's legacy content (I can have a look) but I'd recommend using Pacifist to extract the impulse files and place them where they need to be to have everything load correctly.

  • L8 missing L7's missing Space Designer's stereo delay ???

I just upgraded to Logic 8 from Logic 7, I know I'm a bit behind. But my absolute favorite plug-in in L7 was in Space Designer "long vocals" the stereo delay. It was sooo good. So now I upgraded to L8 and I can't find it in Space Designer. It seems like they took it out! Does anyone know where this effect is in L8? Please help me if you can! My email is [email protected] thank you!

hey, im not sure exactly what you're looking for. but try going to the unofficial logic pro help forums ( http://www.logicprohelp.com/ ). scroll down to plugins and channel strip settings, and im pretty sure there is a thread there for it... oh actually infact, here it is : http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=45520

  • Space Designer LP7 songs don't load in Space Designer LP8?

Hi there, I recently replaced my entire system drive with a new one and installed Logic studio 8. I still have my old system drive but it's not connected to my Mac.
I have been loading songs produced on LP7, when loading the songs ask me for the old Space Designer Impulse response FX presets. Now I assume since installing Logic 8, that the older Space designer stuff has been changed but surely they wouldn't have completely done away with it would they? How can I get a LP7 produced song's Space designer setup load in LP8?
    Thanks.

Hi - I just wish to bring this one back to life:
I was not aware that the Space Designer had maintained the L7 Legacy IR's and I'm keen to get them back too. I have the folder so I can see them all now but...
I'm not sure how to get them to show up in the Space Designer preset menu. I know I can load them from the 'Load IR & Init' menu but this is slow as you have to locate the folder every time.
How should I structure the user library in order to get the Legacy folder to show in the preset menu? I've tried a couple of options but it's not working.
    They are currently showing in:
    MacintoshHD/Library/Audio/ImpulseResponses/Apple/05LegacySpaces
but do not show in the preset menu.
On a related note I have the Spirit Canyon Audio IR's in:
    User/Library/Audio/ImpulseResponses/SpectralRelativity
and would like these to show in the preset menu also. But currently I have to 'Load IR & Init' every time. Same problem maybe?
Do you need some sort of 'preset/plugin' file in the menu that references the IR?
Hope that all makes sense - help appreciated! Thanks

  • Logic freezes while loading Space Designer presets

Logic freezes while loading Space Designer presets when I am working on my template and songs. If I create 1 track in a new empty project there is no problem with Space designer.

And with Logic 8, I am stumped as to how to find all of my samples and virtual instruments that I used in Logic 7...Where is the "folder" that I drag my Sampler Folder alias into? Any clues?

  • Space Designer Plug-ins Not Loading

Hi, whenever I try to select a Space Designer plug-in with Logic Pro 8, I get a pop up which says 'no audio file selected' and asks me to 'please locate the file'. I've checked the Logic folder within the Application Support folder of the Library, and all the .pst files are there in the Plug-In Settings folder, but when I navigate to them from the pop up they are greyed out, making it impossible to select them manually anyway. All the other Plug-Ins (Compressor, Reverb, etc) seem to work fine. The problem only appears to exist with Space Designer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Phil

Hi, and thanks for the reply. I couldn't find the Impulse Response folder you mentioned, but just for information, the pop up prompts me to locate the file (for example) '01.4s Jazz Vocal Room.SDIR', and in the bottom pane of the pop up it says 'No Audio FIle Selected', probably because I haven't located and selected the file it's looking for.
    Thanks again

  • Why are L&R outputs uneven w/ Space Designer?

    Hi,
In tweaking my studio setup, I took this approach to balancing my monitors:
I loaded the TestOsc plugin - which gave a balanced L & R output within Logic as expected; I then adjusted the amps of each monitor speaker so as to properly balance them.
Then: I un-bypassed Space Designer on the Master output (with the TestOsc running) and discovered that it (Space Des..) is strongly affecting the stereo balance - as observable at the Master Out VU meters (& speaker output). The phenomenon is different with various individual SD presets...
    Why is this happening?
I'm concerned about creating my mix in a large orchestral template without an understanding & control of this phenomenon....
    Thanks, Wm

    Why is this happening?
Because Space Designer uses stereo *impulse response* files, through which the audio is processed into reverb. If you do not dial in any Dry signal (did you?) you will hear only the fully processed signal. This can vary enormously, as it is shaped by the impulse response file, which is effectively an audio file. It determines what happens to processed signal. Now if you only hear the processed signal, the differences between presets can be as big as the differences between any two audio files.
So... you may have to adjust the Dry-Wet dials on the right of the SpaceDesigner interface. to balance the reverb and the original signal.
Socalled Send presets have no dry signal dialed in, because sent signals should be fully processed and not 'double up' the original signal.
O, and on the left of the SD-interface is a slider to alter the stereo image, which can also be set to mono.
I'm concerned about creating my mix in a large orchestral template without an understanding & control of this phenomenon....
O, I also think that a test oscillator is not the best "guinea-rig" to try out a convolution reverb - unless you're seriously engineeringly measuring stuff, just try 'm with their intended instrument...
