Space for archive

Hi,
I have to transfer a database from a computer with Linux on a computer with True64Unix. I looked at how much space occupy the archives on Linux and for two month this is 500MB.
On a partition (where I put also the directory for the archives) I have available on True64Unix 800MB, but there I also allocated the datafiles for the database. If I need a new datafile I can allocate spece from the storage.
To allocate a new partition of 1G for the archives on the Tru64 Unix? Is it better?
We do cold backup once per month.
Thank you,
Mihaela

  • How to calculate storage space for archive log files and database backups?

    Hi all,
I have a 1.8 terabyte Oracle 9i database and need to plan for how much additional disk space I will need to perform nightly backups and for archivelog files. Is there a script or formula available that can help me estimate how much required disk space I will need to hold a days worth of archived logs as well as a nightly export dump file and a full hot RMAN backup on disk?
    Thanks!

I'm not sure how to estimate the size of your backups, especially if you use incrementals. However, the space required for archive logs will be equal to the amount of REDO your DB generates. I would count the number of log switches per day with a query like the following:
    select trunc(first_time), count(*)
    from v$log_history
    group by trunc(first_time)
I would then take the average and multiply this count by the size of your redo log files (assuming they are all the same size).

  • Space for Archive and Install

    Hello All,
I am having the same login problems everyone else seems to be having with a new twist, when i go to archive and install and hopefully fix this mess, i realize that i now only have 6gigs left on my hd, and i need 11 to install. I am assuming this is because leopard has already been installed once. Here is the kicker, it wouldnt be a big deal to make space on the hd, but i have no idea how to get to my files since i cannot login and cannot access finder! Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated!
    Thanks
    Ryan

Look at the root directory for your disk and check if there is a "Previous Systems" folder. If so, open it, and if there are multiple versions there, you may be able to safely delete one or more of them. Check the contents to be sure you're keeping the most recent copy. Hopefully, you have an external backup to restore from in case you have to 'erase and install' Leopard.

  • Defrag an old Time Machine backup to save space for archiving?

I'm aware of all the reasons not to defragment an OSX volume, as well as Time Machine volumes, but hear me out on this one...
I bought a new iMac and will be starting a brand new Time Machine backup. I would like to keep the old Time Machine backup around just in case I need access to some old files. I will not be adding anything further to this old backup, and I will not be using this old backup to restore any system. I will only be browsing and restoring files from this backup, but only rarely. I have removed (via the Time Machine interface's "Delete all backups of...") a number of large files and unecessary directories to reduce the backup size. I then ran the hdiutil compact command to reclaim free space from the sparsebundle.
I read, however, that the hdiutil compact command will only delete unused bands of the sparsebundle, and that defragmenting the contents of a sparsebundle will likely produce more "empty" bands that can be removed with another run of compact to further free up space.
Will it be okay to defragment the sparsebundle under these circumstances?

I've looked over Pondini's site and it's an awesome resource. I've learned a lot from it over the years. But my specific question isn't answered there.
The Time Machine software is complex and I understand that there's a lot of things to know to keep it running smoothly. However, my particular situation isn't commonly discussed. In scenarios not involving Time Machine, defragging a sparsebundle before running hdiutil compact is known to help free up more disk space by creating more unused bands within the sparsebundle that can be removed by compact. Makes sense. Why would this affect Time Machine's process? And could it be that it won't cause a problem for a sparsebundle that will only be used to browse and restore files? ... As opposed to a sparsebundle that one intends to continue backing up to? Are there defregmenting options that I should avoid, or be sure to use?

  • Overheads for Archive Logs

    Hi,
Not sure where I should address this but I would appreciate any helpful feedback.
I would like to find out what are the overheads (in terms of size) for managing & storing archive logs for capacity planning purposes. Is this information documented anywhere? How can I find out?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks,
    Tony

Since this number is dependent on your database, it would be impossible to answer. If you have a small database with few changes/deletes, you hardly need any space for archive logs. Oracle reccommends that you size your archive logs so that they switch ~1 time per hour.

Is there a recomended way to delete proxy and optimized clips once a project is completed and is ready for archive? also, can proxy and optimized clips be removed (to save space) once a project is ready for color correction and the original clips are used

No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

  • Using a single Content server for DMS and also for Archive link documents

    Hi,
We have Planned for a single content server for managing the documents in DMS, parallelly as DMS Standard SAP objects are not available for all SAP transactions, i have proposed for making use of SAP Archivelink funtionality to maintain the documentations where Std SAP DMS does not provide a Solution.
    so here the question is
can a single content server be used as a content repository for Both DMS and archivelink,
can any one having done this pls state if it is possible to create different or Many Content repositories for DMS, Archive link in the same server,
is this a virtual creation or can we assign each repository a specific storage space which it should not exceed.
    Thanks and regards
    Sathish

    Hi sathish,
-- Through the ArchiveLink docuemnt Management interface, an SAP sytem can use various content servers as storage media. similarly, one contnent server can be used by multiple SAP systems.
-- A Content server always has a single database assigned to it. A database can therefore be used by only one content server.
-- A databse is split into as many repositories as necessary. The design of the repository is mapped in the SAP system.A repository contains documents.
Depending on your requirements,(if u have limited documents or with low requirements)  you can use the same content server for both DMS and Archivelink.
The number of documents stored on the content server is limited only by the size of the database.
Its better to have an external content server for archiving purpose, if your database size is increasing. Since the archiving systems storage is not dependent on the database.
U can also refer to the below thread :
How to Archive SAP DMS Data?
    hope this helps....

  • Local file system for archive destination in RAC with ASM

    hi Gurus .
    I need an info.
I have ASM file system in 2 node RAC.
The client does not want to use flash recovery area.
Can we use the archive destination as local file system rather than ASM.
like /xyzlog1 for archvies coming from node 1 and /xyzlog2 for archive logs coming from node 2.
Imortant thing is these two destinations are anot shared with each nodes.
    OS is solaris sparc 10.
    version is 10.2.0.2

There is huge space in the storage.
Pls tell me in general ho wdo you do this.
Do we take and one disk from the storage and format it with local file system and share it among the 2 nodes?
If so then that mount point will have same mount point name if we see it from other node... ..ryt
In this scenario if one instance is down then from the same shared mount point which is on the same node(down) can apply archves? Here, Earlier you are using any ASM shared location for ARCHIVES ?
if so you can add a CANDIDATE disk to your existing ARHCIVE disk group(shared).
if not from LUN's after format, I.e. candidates based on that you can create a new DISK group(shared) according to your space requirements. THen you can assign to log_archive_dest_1 for both the nodes to single shared location(disk group)

  • "Insufficient disk space for encoding" There is!!!!

    Hi,
I've got a problem that is really driving me crazy.
When ever I write an .img or even burn to disk, the following comes up:
"Insufficient disk space for encoding. Please free up disk space on your encoding target drive"
This is untrue. I have 6.95 GB left on my hard drive, plenty on my LaCie drives and enough on my DVD-R. I really don't know what the problem is. I've written DVDs with less than 6.95 GB before.
    Can anyone help?
    Many Thanks,
    Pete Cooke

That's not enough, when your hard drive gets about 80% full, then you may begin to see this issue. There is alot of files that are temporary, that also use disk space during the build process.
You really need alot more space than what you currently have left, (like 20GB) or more.
Look, I know that some here are on a shoe string budget, but the prices that ATA firewire drives are at now, there cheep. I just saw one on deal-mac.com, (250GB ATA, internal) for $80.00 and a 160GB for $40.00. You could replace your current firewire drive, for not much.
I know, you don't want to open the external firewire drive inclosure, that's ok, I also have a solution for that. It's a one time expense, but get a firewire bridge, like the one Wiebetech.com sells for $120.00 and from then on, you can just purchase raw internal HD's on sale as the need arises and plug those drives in via the 6pin firewire bridge from Wiebetech. This has saved me allot cash on purchasing the fire interface over and over, (as you have to do when purchasing an external firewire drive.)
I just move the Wiebetech drive dock firewire bridge from drive to drive as needed, I now have 4 of them. It also allows me to quickly archive off footage to an ATA drive quickly, as well as use that footage from that drive while authoring a DVD or FCP project.
I have looked at other solution like this, but this seems to be the lowest cost per GB & buck, ($.)

  • Not enough disk space for updates

I recently repartitioned my hard drive to make one central location for archiving and files, which can be mounted from each OS on my computer.
I allotted 20GB to my Mac partition, thinking that would be enough. Well, I Symlinked Apps and Users folder to another partition, and I still only have 4.56 GB remaining. I am trying to do a software update but it is telling me that at least 2-3 more gigs are needed. I am not sure what I can do.
    Things I've tried:
Resizing the partition with Disk Utility - It didn't work.
Symlinking Apps and Users folder to another location - Only freed up so much space.
Things I am thinking about doing:
Temporarily symlink the Library and/or System folders to the other partition in order to install the updates.
Does anybody have any insight or suggestions for me?
    Thanks in advance.

Temporarily symlink the Library and/or System folders to the other partition in order to install the updates.
IMHO, this isn't going to work and will likely crash your system. These directories are needed at boot time and if they're not available (e.g. because the volume hasn't mounted yet), you're hosed.
Does anybody have any insight or suggestions for me?
    Sure, two.
First, check that you don't have a lot of wasted space on your boot partition, specifically check things like /var/log and /var/tmp since these can be disk hogs.
Secondly, the chances are that at least part of the problem is the size of the installer download in addition to the space it needs to perform the install.
Therefore you should be able to save by downloading the update manually from Apple's support site. Download them to your second partition, then run the installer to apply them.

  • DPM is out of disk space for the replica. (ID 58 Details: There is not enough space on the disk (0x80070070))

I constantly get these message on laptop backup, what actually does it mean?
DPM is out of disk space for the replica. (ID 58 Details: There is not enough space on the disk (0x80070070))
I set automatic growth on protection group and there is plenty space.

    Auto-grow Key Points
1.) Auto-grow needs to be enabled for the datasource.
2.) We grow the replica/recovery point volume by 10gigs or by 25% whichever is higher.
3.) To prevent race conditions, we do not grow within 15 minutes of the last growth.

  • Highest compression for archive purposes

    Hey Everyone,
I'm looking to compress my videos at very high quality for storage using compressor. (some of my videos are 1-2 minutes others are 5 minutes). I tried a couple of times but my exports were 20 gb...too large.
In case I ever put together a demo reel or something, i'd like for my archives to be at the highest quality with the minimum space being taked up. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Many institutions use MPEG-2 at very high data rates for archival or mezzanine storage. You can do this in Compressor. Create a custom MPEG-2 setting; set the stream usage to Generic; and then crank the bitrate up as high as you want to go...with the understanding that the higher the bitrate the better the quality, but the larger the file size. If you move the slider all the way up to 40 for SD material you can get around 3 minutes per gig.
You can then choose Program Stream in the extras tab and YUV encoding (Compressor 3.5) for higher quality muxed files.

  • LMS3.2 : backup disck space for 1500 devices

    Hi,
Do you have an idea about how can be disk space for a LMS backup for 1500 devices.
If you can give me information, could you tell me what are configuration for :
    - syslog (how long do you keep it)
    - do you have scheduled report, which one ?
    - how long do you keep config archive, how many archive do you keep ?
    - what are setting for purge jobs and data ?
    - do you worke with DFM ?
    Many thanks for your feedback,
    Elisabeth

This is possible. You can schedule a Archive job for perticular devices to run periodically, like every 6 hours, daily, weekly or monthly.
This can be done from :
RME > Config Mgmt > Archive Mgmt > Sync Archive
    -Thanks

  • Software Update Server - Deleting old updates to make space for new ones

On Page 77 of the SystemImage_and_SW_Updatev10.4.pdf Apple recommends "deleting old updates to make space for new ones". I've looked and searched and yet to find a way to do this. The Server Admin interface and the command line options I've looked into don't appear to provide this option.
So I actually tried stopping the server, moving the updates from /usr/share/swupd/html to another location, starting the server, the server wouldn't start, moving the files back again, the server still won't start.
    1. Does anyone know how you're supposed to "Delete old updates to make space for new ones"
    2. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get Software Update service running again?
