Spacebar in Finder: I don't want a preview

Question

All right, when I'm in a window in the Finder, and I push the space bar with a file selected, I get a pop-up window with the contents of the file. While this is great if I had actually wanted to do that, what I really wanted was to jump to the file that had a space as its first character. I don't even know what this "feature" is called, much less how to disable it. That's what I'm looking for.
What is the name of this, and how do I either turn it off or change the keyboard shortcut to something else?

As I noted, Option-space works. I use it all the time. I agree that sometimes the Chrome gets in the way of actually using the computer, which is why I spend a lot of time under the hood where the actual computer is.
