Spacebar needs shift key to function

Hello All! I installed the latest firmware and now I cannot use my spacebar unless I hold down the shift key first. Also, the Arrow keys scroll slower than normal, so it seems. Anyone experience this? I tried disconnecting the Keyboard from the Mini, even tried a 2nd keyboard...still the same problem.
Look forward to all your advice!

  • T40's Left Shift key makes right click/context menu appear?

    Hello All-
On my T40, on which I just recently got Windows 7 correctly installed, has a curious behavior:
When I press the left shift key, it functions the same as if I had pressed the right mouse button.  It functions correctly otherwise, I.E., when using it to capitolize a letter in an email, the letter is capitolized, but as soon as I let go of the shift key, the right click/context menu immediately appears.
This is exceedingly irritating, as I cannot continue typing until I have navigated out of the menu.
I have checked to see if the Keyboard Customiser utility is causing this, as I currently have my left Alt key functioning as a Windows button, but it does not appear to be causing this particular issue.
Does anyone have any idea how I might go about fixing this?
    Thanks in advance,

  • T61 - Help needed to re-attach the "Shift" key

I accidentally popped off the shift key when cleaning my keyboard.  Unlike most other keys on the keyboard, underneath the actual "shift" key cover is a raised point made of a blue rubber-like material.  I cannot figure out to re-attach the cover to the shift key and hoping someone can help me out!

You need a pair of tool tweezers and sober pair of hands or a small screwdriver like the jewelers driver included in those eyeglass repair clips on grocery store endcaps.
The blue cone you're referring to is often called a "chute" and black and white scissors is sometimes referred to as a "pantograph"
Use your tool to snap the pegs into the plastic brace on your deck and it should stand erectly over the blue chute.
The important part is installing the scissors with correct orientation because it can still snap fit but upside down and prevent proper key attachment before overwhelming frustration. On the bottom of your Shift key is likely the scissors and this should be snapped off the key. The white half of the scissors should be oriented north to the LCD
Then snap the scissors into the brace, the shift keys have a metal U bracket and this should be unfurled as far as possible towards the bottom / mousepad.
The shift keys are the hardest keys to reinstall but not impossible, if you become frustrated and break it,, you can buy replacement keys from third parties and we use http://www.machinaelectronics.com/store/  (no affiliation except always satisfied)  for $6 replacements shipped first class.
Don't just sit there, take a second and use the Kudo's button to compliment the people who help you.

    Hello,
My issue is with the keybaord of my Macbook Pro. Just yesterday I noticed the following problems with my keyboard.
    Error Issue:
    Right Shift key+D
    Right Shift key+C
    Right Shift key+E
    Left CMD+C
Are all not functioning. I don't know what happened, I ran the keyboard viewer and tested all these keys out, the weird thing is that I can use the alternate keys on right and left, like shift and CMD.
Please help your urgent feedback is appreciated.

I suggest trying the following (check after each step):
    1) Reboot
    2) Reset PRAM using this procedure: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    3) Reset the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    4) check in a different user space (maybe it's a preferences problem)
    5) take to Apple store

    Hello Damyanology,
If your enter key is not working but you have to use it, you can bring up the on screen keyboard, and that will allow you to use enter.
Here is a link to open the on screen keyboard.
Go into device manager and uninstall the keyboard and restart the computer. This should reinstall the driver to correct the problem.
Here is a link to uninstall in device manager.
Let me know if this helps.

You do not tell us what OS version you have. In OS 10.8.2, do this:
Apple Menu / System Preferences / Language and Text / Input Sources.
Select the language you want. Mine is set to Canadian English.

  • Shift key functions not working

    Hi,
Occasionally, shift key functions, such as proportionate element scaling and content scaling stop working in InDesign CC. I don't know what causes it, and so far the only solution I've found is to restart my machine. Does anyone know the cause or a better solution? We've spoken with support and they had us reset our preferences in the cloud, which didn't work.
    Thanks!

It can be caused by third-party software grabbing keystrokes. Some have reported it's related to using a particular web browser so you could try another.
You could also try creating a separate user on your computer. If it works, it could because of some corruption in your system.

  • R Shift key now triggers exposé.  Need help!

Whenever I press the R shift key, regardless of the application, exposé is always triggered. Specifically, it activates exposé for the current application in use. I did not modify any of the keyboard or exposé settings in system preferences. I created a new account to see if it was preference related, and the keyboard functioned normally in the test account. The problem is that I have no idea how or what preference was changed. I thought about trying to restore a preference folder with time machine, but I have no idea which file or folder contains the relevant preferences. I have scoured the internet for answers and have so far come up empty. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot, problem solved. No idea how the problem occurred.... I went into system preferences and the application exposé was set to the default F10. Just to see what would happen, I disabled this option and was directed to 'keyboard shortcuts', which simply indicated that the particular shortcut had been unchecked.
Sure enough, my R shift was functioning normally again. I went back and enabled the application exposé shortcut and everything is working just fine.

  • Need reference for Visa2 Key Diversification Function

I've been trying to find a definitive specification for the Visa2 master key to card key diversification function, but with no luck. I did find a Gemalto document that instead of using the diversification data supplied in the 0xCF 'GET DATA' response and the response to an "INIT UPDATE", specifies derivation based on the CPLC data (and calls that Visa2).
Has any one got a better pointer?

My question was "what is the reference document for the VISA2 key diversification function?".
I didn't ask about EMV key derivation because I already had that reference.
The CPLC data is NOT the same as the tag CF or INIT UPDATE diversification array. And in no GP document that I've found is it required to be. In fact the guidance is that CF is derived from tag 42 and tag 45 - card issuer and card id.
And FYI - I think the reference document for Visa2 key diversification is "VISA Card Production Guide" - probably 1.0, but I can't get a copy of that. Given other text I've found, I think the Gemalto "use the CPLC for diversification for VISA" is probably correct. But without a copy of the reference I can't confirm that.

  • Enter and shift keys not working. HELP!!!

A few days ago my mouse started behaving erratically all of a sudden. It would move by itself, click apps, and switch tabs rapidly all on its own. I've had this computer for over 2 years and this has never happened before. Restarting and rebooting into safe mode didn't work, but one user suggested a PRAM reset and that fixed the mouse problem. However, my enter and shift key on the right side do not work now (this is much less annoying than the mouse problem, but still very inconvenient!). Restarting the computer and doing another PRAM reset doesn't work unfortunately. I also used the keyboard viewer to confirm that all but those two keys work. I don't think the issue is with keyboard lint because both keys worked fine before I tried the reset. Booting up in safe mode also doesn't fix the problem. It would be great if I could find a way to fix this here since I won't be able to go to an Apple genius bar until December!

    Hello sandi3s,
The troubleshooting detailed below may help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's keyboard.
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Using shift key to extend line or paint stroke

Hello all. I've been using a very old version of Photoshop for the last 10 years and I'm used to using the shift key to extend a line or paint stroke. By that I mean,  I use the paint tool to make a dot and then hold down the shift key and make another dot elsewhere and that creates a straight line. I just purchased CS6 and that function doesn't  seem to be happening. Is this something I need to activate in a preference?
Thanks very much for any and all help.

There's something strange going on here...
Like you, I have always relied on Shift giving me straight strokes from last point to current point.  However, I just tried it with the setting both ways and in both cases it worked.

  • Left shift key is defective

By merely touching the left shift key, the key will function. That means that while typing the 'y' or the 'x', I will get instead 'Y' and 'X' respectively. I have a QWERTZ keyboard.

The metal contact inside has most likely flattened out. You'll need to get the device replaced. If it's less than a year old and you bought it from your carrier they should be able to get a warranty replacement for you.

  • How can I reduce the size of a photo proportionally.  With my old Mac mini I was able to place the pointer on the bottom right corner  hold the shift key until I achieved the desires size.

How can I reduce the size of a photo PROPORTIONALLY?  With my old Macmini I was able to place the pointer on the bottom right corner of the picture, hold down the shift key and move the pointer to achieve the desired size.

You'll need to use a 3rd party editor like one of these:
Some Image Editors That Support layers:
    Photoshop Elements 11 for Mac - $79
    Rainbow Painter - $30
    Imagerie - $38
    Acorn - $50
    Pixelmator - $60
    Seashore - Free
    Portraits and Prints - Free
    GIMP for Mac - Free
    Xee 2.1 - free
My personal preference would be for Photoshop Elements for Mac. Most of these will let you select and copy a head from one photo, paste it into another photo, resize and place where you need it.
PSE has a specific feature just for that function.  I belive the Adobe site for PSE has a demo video of that feature.

  • Holding Shift Key When Dragging

Does anyone know what I need to do to make sure that when I hold the shift key, the object moves along the same plane that it started in? The function has worked fine for years, but it started acting up this morning.
    I've tried:
    Closing the file and reopening.
    Closing the program and reopening.
    Restarting the computer and reopening.
I'm using Illustrator CS4 on an Intel based Macintosh system.

Malfunction of modifier keys is often caused by other software, like Entourage or Firefox. See a list at Jacob's place: http://bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/other.html

  • Shift key is "stuck down"

So I first had a problem with this over a week ago - when I switched my laptop on it went to a grey screen with the option of me or guest. I clicked on me, but it wouldn't accept my password. I clicked on guest, and got a message about restarting in Safari only mode or something. Tried this a few times but each time it came back to the same screen with the same options.
Eventually I managed to get on as normal by holding down the right hand command key whilst switching on (doesn't work with the other command key). From there I tried various things and worked out that everything was acting as if I had a shift key held down, and I used the keyboard viewer to work out that it was the right hand shift key causing the problem.Obviously this was why my password wasn't being accepted.
It corrected itself after a couple of hours but the problem came and went last week. I tried blasting air under the key, thinking there might be something under there, but it didn't have any effect.
I should mention at this point that I'm from the UK but currently living in Madagascar so though my MacBook is only 8 months old I can't take it anywhere for help.
My dad called Apple for me who advised to try reinstalling Lion (by holding down CMD + R whilst switching on). I first tried this on Friday afternoon last week but couldn't do it because it required logging in to the app store, and I couldn't type my password in as the shift key was doing it's thing. It stopped doing it a while later, but by that time our internet was down so once again couldn't do it. I used a spare laptop (as I am doing again now) and tried to change my app store password, but it won't let me change it to an all caps password.
On Monday it became more of a problem - it's now constant rather than intermittant. Also, if I leave it for 5 minutes or so the mouse starts to work normally, but as soon as I type the entire problem returns.
Last night I left software updates downloading overnight (internet here is sloooooooow) but this morning someone had unplugged my power cable so I assumed they wouldn't have worked. I tried doing a normal switch on and it went to the grey screen, then when I tired switching it off got a message saying there were updates to install. Only took 5 minutes to install these but when I switched on again I still had exactly the same problem. When I tried holding CMD down the grey screen persisted 4 or 5 times, but then decided to work. So I've got it switched on but still have the problem.
I did a software update again and it says there are still 2 updates which are 1.34GB - which seems weird as yesterday there were 5 updates and it was 1.34GB. I can't try downloading these during the day, would have to leave it overnight again.
I'm going to try calling Apple from Skype in a couple of hours but just wondered if there's anything else I can try. If they can change my password to all caps I can try reinstalling Lion. This morning we took the key off and cleaned it, but made no difference at all (didn't really expect it to). The only options I've come up with are downloading a key remapping programme to try and disable that shift key, or using an external keyboard - we don't have one here so would have to wait a few weeks for someone to bring one from the UK and I could do with knowing whether this would even work before trying to arrange it.
Could really do with fixing this as I am not making the best first impression at my new job due to being able to do very little work! I'm not planning to return to the UK until at least November and flights would cost more than buying a new laptop - so some kind of solution is needed!
So... any thoughts much appreciated. Sorry for the lengthy explanation! Many thanks in advance.

It should be the simplest of matters to connect an external keyboard -- any USB KB will do -- and see whether it works. If you need to be able to travel with a functional MBP, though, that won't be a very practical workaround.
I don't know whether the Shift key can be remapped successfully. The fact that it's one of two keys that both have the same function may be a complication: you won't want the left Shift key remapped too.
The computer doesn't have to go back to the UK for service -- there may be a closer option, and your warranty is good worldwide.
