Spaces broken on boot

Spaces is broken on boot. I have to disable it before I can see the windows for applications that open on boot. I have to disable spaces to see them. Then i can enable spaces for the rest of the session. Any fix available?

winux:
Your MDD should be OS 9 bootable, as opposed to the FW800 model that definitely is not. According to this Apple link, your Mac originally came with Mac OS 9.2.2 and Max OS X 10.2 (or 10.2.1 or 10.2.6). What this means to you is that any retail version of either OS 9.2.2 or OS X 10.2.6 or later should boot the Mac properly. If you are trying to load OS X 10.0 (as listed in your Discussions computer Profile), or a version of OS 9 earlier than OS 9.2.2, they won't work properly. That similarly applies to the Apple Hardware Test Disk you're using - the AHT disks are machine specific. Some MDDs shipped with AHT version 1.2.6, others with version 1.2.7. OEM versions of OS X or OS 9 that came from another computer can give you problems as well and should not be used.
I don't know what Apple charges for a complete replacement install disk set, but if it's expensive, you might consider foregoing the original install disks and just purchase a retail version of Tiger (OS X 10.4.x). The older Panther OS (10.3.x) retail version will also work. If you want OS 9 as well, then a retail OS 9.2.2 version will work. If you want one, you could just get an AHT replacement disk from Apple, per Don's link. This might save you some money, while providing you with a much newer and better version of OS X than the originally-included Jaguar version (OS X 10.2.x). Note that the Mac's original software package also shipped with some bundled software, but it's likely antiquated by today's standards...

  • Disk Utility broken while booted from Installation CDs??

Situation: I have a Macbook Pro with a 120 GB HDD. I had partitioned it into two partitions, and later desired that I should have only one partition on the drive. I booted the Mac OS X installation CDs and attempted the following three-step procedure:
    1. Use Disk Utility to image my system partition into a file on an external USB drive
    2. Verify the image and repartition ("Erase") my laptop's internal HDD
    3. Restore the disk image from the external HDD to the laptop's HDD.
I made it to step 3 without issue. So currently I have one unbootable Macbook Pro, an 85 GB image of a system partition on a USB HDD, and a perfectly bootable Intel Mac Mini from which I'm writing this post.
Problem: Disk Utility doesn't seem to be able to restore images when booted from the Installation CDs. On the 'Restore' tab there are two fields you must fill in, a 'source' field and a 'destination' field. The source field has a button where you can summon a very helpful file-picker, and it pulls up my disk image from my USB drive just fine. However, the destination field can only be filled in by clicking and dragging a drive from the left panel in Disk Utility.
However, it seems impossible to do this while booted from the Installation CDs. When I attempt to click and drag a disk from the left panel list, all I end up accomplishing is selecting multiple items from the list. To make a visual illustration:
Instead of this, like I get when I try it on my mac mini booted normally:
    http://upload.pbase.com/silentplummet/image/72221384.jpg
...I get this, which is a photo of my macbook pro booted from the installation CDs:
    http://upload.pbase.com/silentplummet/image/72221397.jpg
There doesn't seem to be any way to actually select a destination drive. If I had to hypothesize, I would guess that the GUI is crippled when you boot from CD and click+drag is deactivated. But that appears to make it impossible to restore images since the only way to select destination drives is by clicking and dragging.
Now I am a college student; I'm not really losing revenue or anything over this, but this is an awful oversight on Apple's part and I am stuck on what to do about it. There is no documentation that says "Restore functionality is crippled in Disk Utility when booting from installation CDs." Here are the steps I have tried for an alternate solution:
-Commandline diskutil. Unfortunately Apple has crippled it and there appears to be no imaging functionality whatsoever.
-Mount the image manually and cp the files back over. Unfortunately I can't make it preserve permissions. I passed the right options to cp but it just won't do what it's supposed to. I tried copying it anyway and using Disk Utility to repair the permissions, but it still wouldn't boot.
-Call Applecare. The support rep was kind and helpful but couldn't offer a solution. The higher-ups fed me some BS about not supporting third party applications, well, I hardly think Disk Utility constitutes a third party application.
My next step is to boot the MBP in target disk mode and use my mac mini to restore the image to the MBP HDD, but I have to buy a firewire cable for that and I don't really want to.
Seeking: acknowledgement that Disk Utility is broken and Apple *****, or otherwise immediate solutions to restore the image to my HDD that do not constitute monetary expenditures on my part.

Others have (in the Mac Pro forum) noticed this bug in Disk Utility on the Intel version install disks. Your easiest fix would be to reinstall OSX on you Macbook disk, boot it, mount the disk image from the USB drive, and use the Migration Assistant to copy over all your accounts and data files.

  • Right-click ability gone and Spaces broken (seemingly related)

I recently noticed two things going wrong on my Mac, that showed up at the same time. I don't know if it's coincidence or not.
First, I had set my preferences to enable "right-clicking" using the righthand mouse button. I can no longer right click; the right button now acts like the main button. The preferences have not changed; right click is still enabled.
Second, I have Spaces enabled and had assigned certain apps to certain spaces. Now, all apps launch into the currently active space rather than their assigned spaces. I can still switch between spaces, and drag applications to a desired space, but my preferences for Spaces are being ignored (the preferences are still set as before, just not being acted on by the computer).
Logging off and then back on does not solve either problem. I tried re-booting, which solved both problems last week. The problems since have reoccurred; I tried re-booting again, but this time the problems persist - rebooting did not solve them again.
I also tried trashing my finder preferences. This did not seem to have any effect.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
I am a newbie and can't help you with spaces, but I also lost my right click after enabling spaces (which is how I found your post). I figured out that by default, spaces sets the right click to activate it. I had to go to System Preferences in the apple menu and undo that option. That fixed my right click.
The solution to your problem may be more complicated, but I thought I would just offer it.

  • Using disk space on net booted iMac

I have 20 iMacs i'm booting as diskless workstations. Can I mount the internal  drives of those machines on the server and use them for additional user storage? If so, what would be the best way to set that up?

The sales guy does not know what he's talking about...
Open iTunes preferences Advanced tab.  Uncheck the box for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  Click OK.
Now, when you add those songs to your iTunes library, iTunes will access the song files from the external drive, where they are currently located.  And you can sync them to your iPod.

  • Spaces broken?! What happened?

I love spaces, use it every day, all day, with every application. For the most part it works fine. My only issue is when I press F8 (default hotkey to activate spaces - go into the "bird's eye view") it no longer works! I can switch spaces with both the number keys and the arrow keys, but F8 just fails me. I've been able to live with it for a while now, but I work with graphics and enjoy(ed) being able to see where I was dragging windows and applications between spaces.
Has anyone experienced this? Did something happen to it? I'm all up to date software wise and no amount of changing the Spaces Utility setting for the hotkeys fixes it.
    Thoughts?
    Joe

Happened to me to, but after a hard disk failure and a time machine backup. Everything else came back just perfectly. The hot-corner works but no way can I make the hotkey work on the builtin or external keyboard.
There's another thread of people frustrated by this http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12082272 but no answers.

  • Tab-completion after directories containing spaces broken

    Hello,
Some days ago I noticed that tab-completion doesn't work any more on files and directories that contain spaces. I'm pretty sure that it has. I'm using bash (3.1.17-1). I don't know when this happened, but my suspicion is that it is related to the upgrade to readline 5.2. Has anyone else experienced this? (Maybe someone can be a bit more specific than I )
Hm, here are some other perhaps interesting settings on my system:
    LOCALE="en_US.ISO-8859-1"
    KEYMAP="sv-latin1.map.gz"
    CONSOLEFONT="lat1-16.psfu.gz"
    CONSOLEMAP="8859-1"

Romashka wrote:Probably due to upgrade of readline while bash was not recompiled.
In bug report somebody mentioned that he recompiled bash against current readline without success in resolving the issue (so did slubman a moment ago). I think that's rather bash itself  or bash/readline (not likely since new bash works properly) problem.
Anyway I'm stopping before I'll turn this thread into bug system I'm going to watch bug reports since now without "bugging" you (a insectorium in one phrase )

  • Help-Erasing a Boot Camp Partition Caused 32 GB of Disk Space to Vanish

    Hi
I'm a new mac user I'd I have been really happy so far, expect for this problem:
-I created a 32 gb partition with boot camp.
-I tried installing windows xp without knowing I had to format the system to NTFS during the install
The installation didnt work, and I erased the bootcamp partition.
-When I tried to create a new boot camp partition, it said my Mac HD size hard drive is 227 gb, ie the *32 gb allocated to the partition had vanished*. In addition, I could not recreate a partition because of an error message.
-I ran the snow leopard CD's disk utility and thought that I had fixed the problem.
-However in boot camp, the mac drive is still only 227 gb (missing 32 gb). I can create partitions now, and deleting these partitions does cause any additional loss of disk space.
-I tried erasing empty disk space with no luck.
Does anyone know how to recover space lost by Boot Camp?
    Thanks

Let me ask a simple question. What size HD do you have in your Mac? You say you see 227 GB and that 32GB is "missing". If I add those two numbers up I com up with 259 GB. I suspect that your "missing" space is due to the inconsistencies in which Snow Leopard now reports 1 GB. In some places it reports 1 GB as a hard disk manufacturer (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). In other places it reports 1 GB as a binary number (1 GB = 2^^30 [IIRC] = 1,073,741,824 Bytes). Since I do not know of any drive manufacturer that sells a 259 GB drive, I suspect that this is just due to the differing definitions of 1 GB.

  • My boot drive space constantly decreases until reboot

So the longer I leave my imac on, running 10.7.4, the slower and slower it gets, and the more spinning beach balls I get.
At the same time, there becomes less and less free space on my boot drive. I mean over the course of 2 days it can drop from 77GB free to 63GB free.
What the heck is going on? And how can I figure out what the culprit is?

Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
    (1) You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
    (2) You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table once or twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If one process (not including "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.
This suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details:
Memory Usage Performance Guidelines: About the Virtual Memory System
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.

  • Free space on boot drive constantly decreases until reboot

Hi there. I have a really weird thing happening that I've never seen before.
I'm running 10.7.4 on an iMac, and have about 45GB free on the system drive. At least that's right after I boot up the system. After that, the free space available on my HD slowly but constantly decreases, and the computer slowly but surely becomes less responsive. When the free space on the boot drive gets down around 37GB (which takes 2-3 days... I usually never turn the machine off) I get so many spinning beach balls... in ALL applications... that the computer becomes basically unuseable and I am forced to reboot. But as soon as I do, free space is back up to 45GB, and computer is snappy and fast again.
    What the heck?

  • Lost disk space after Boot Camp partion crash

I was partitioning my 160GB (I have about 70GB free space) with the Boot Camp assistant, when my computer kernel panicked. I had to restart, and when I logged in again I was missing about 10GB of space. I did an "Erase Free Space" w/ Disk Utility, but to no avail. Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

Also note, that you can partition your HD with Disk-Utility running off the Install Disk to create a FAT partition for bootcamp. The next time you run Bootcamp it will allow you to use that partition to install WIndows.
I went through 3 Kernel Panics, trying to create the FAT Partition with the boot camp asssistant, always having to fix the HD with the method above.

  • Time machine munching boot drive space

I am running a server with a boot drive, a data drive and an external backup drive. I am using TM to backup the data drive ( which includes the service data). The boot drive is excluded from the backup as is the folder containing the Service data. While TM is calculating the changes the available space on the boot drive drops alarming from about 22 GB to 1 GB.
The backup then copies the data and the available space goes back to normal.
Any thoughts on what I can do to stop this?
    thanks
PS on our other server which basically just hosts Filemaker server this doesnt happen.

johnl927 is suggesting you wipe your external hard drive to remove any ghost files or errors in the file system. That would be the fastest and least time consuming way to go.
Your alternative is to run Disk Utility, verify disk and the partitions of the external hard drive, and if still in doubt verify permissions. The disk may sometimes claim to have less free space than really available because at some point in the past your computer or else where you plugged it in forgot to do some general housekeeping on the external hard drive.

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

How can I do to recover the device?
    Keeps rebooting endlessly!
    Thank you.
    Andrea

When the checksum fails, either the IOS image you are trying to load is corrupted (or incomplete) or the tftp download corrupted the image.
I would start by using an older, smaller image. Such as 8.2(5). Tftp that image to get the ASA booted, then upgrade to 9.0(2).

  • ASA boot problem

    Hello,
I have problem with ASA 5505. One of our customers brought me ASA 5505 with deleted flash. They want me to fix the problem. I tried to load image from rommon mode, but failed many many times. I used 4 different software files. I tried many many times and most often I get :

    with asa722-k8.bin file.
In one ocasion, when I booted asa804-k8.bin, ASA attempted to boot but stucked immediately and became idle. Noting happened, I leave it 24 hours and noting happened.
Please if someone knows what to do, let me know !!!

    HI,
I just reloaded a image to my asa 5505 and did the following.
Saved the image file : asa831-k8.bin and installed a tftp server app (pumpkin)
    added the following :
rommon #0> ADDRESS=192.168.0.? (Where this is the address you want to give the asa)
rommon #1> SERVER=192.168.0.? (Where this is the address of the laptop you have pumpkin installed on
    rommon #2> IMAGE=asa831-k8.bin
rommon #3> PORT=Ethernet0/1 (As I had the laptop connected to the ASA into this port)
press Enter, should display the following:
    Ethernet0/1
    MAC Address: 0025.840d.52d8
    Link is UP
    type :
    rommon #4> tftp
when it finished doing its thing I then rebooted the ASA and it loaded the new image.
