Spaces Keyboard viewer in every space

I use the keyboard viewer frequently to enter short text strings (I have a disability that makes using the keyboard uncomfortable) and I use Spaces. Previously I could add Keyboardviewer to "every space" in 10.6 I can not find out how to do that. I know where the app is /System/Library/Input Methods/Keyboardviewer . When I navigate there to add it nothing shows. How can I configure Spaces so Keyboardviewer is displayed in every space?

Michael, I think I know what you did wrong. I added keyboard viewer to every space and then went back to write up step by step instructions and it was suddenly gone!! I had not followed the exact path. Input methods exist in several places but they are empty except in the exact path you specified.
Macintosh HD/System/Library/Input Methods/Keyboardviewer
Anyway the step by step is below, which you probably already know but here it is:
You can navigate there from System Preferences - Expose & Spaces - Spaces Tab. Now hit the "+" sign below Application Assignments. In the drop down box select "other".
Make sure to start at the Mac HD level as you click through /system/library/input etc.
Select the Keyboard viewer and then "every space".

  • Applications in "every space" aren't

Hi, I just upgraded to Leopard last night and added in the 10.5.2 combo update. I was really looking forward to Spaces, but I've set two applications (Adium and X Resource Graph) to be on "every space," but this doesn't seem to work. It worked for a little while (possibly while I was downloading 10.5.2? Maybe the update killed it?), but now it consistently doesn't work. When I start Adium or XRG, they just stay on whatever space they opened in. Any ideas?

    Hi,
    i have the same problem.
I want to see the floating CPU window in every space - when i activate every space for activity monitor all things are ok.
But after restarting (activity monitor is loaded with login items) activity monitor is only visible in space 1.
But... every space is active in spaces.. i have to set back to an another space (lets say space one) and again to "every space" to see activity monitor on every space..
bug? - is there a workaround?
    greetings

  • Moving windows into every space via keyboard shorcut

    Hi all
occasionally I need to see an app in every window, but not all the time. I was wondering if there was a script or a mouse click or keyboard shortcut to move and remove an app or window from every space.
I know I can do this through spaces preference, but was just wondering if there is a way to reduce the steps.
    thanks

    Hey rakem,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing an on-going issue in regards to the connectivity of your peripheral devices, in this case a USB keyboard. I completely agree that this issue sounds incredibly frustrating. I’d like to ask you a few questions to gather more information on the issue.
Is the USB keyboard in question an Apple device or third-party? If it is the latter, it may be that the USB keyboard requires specific power requirements:
Apple Computers and Displays: Powering peripherals through USB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049
Note: Some USB peripheral devices not manufactured by Apple may have unique power requirements. These may exceed the power allotment on an individual USB port. Those devices may require you connect them to multiple USB ports or may have external power sources that must be present for them to function.
Apple peripheral devices may request more than 500 mA (Milliamps) at 5 V (Volts) from a port to function or to allow for faster charging. Such Apple peripheral devices include:
    - Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive (when connected to supported computers)
    - Aluminum Wired Keyboard*
    - iPod
    - iPhone
    - iPad
Also, I understand that you have tested this keyboard with a different computer, however I’d really love to hear the results of a test with another wired keyboard. This will help isolate if the issue indeed lies with the keyboard itself.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Spaces Keyboard Freeze, Possible Insight?

I’m one of the thousands who are struggling with the use of Spaces and the locked up keyboard.  When I use my keyboard to move between spaces, the Spaces image remains on the screen, freezing up my keyboard so that only limited buttons still work.  The most effective way I’ve found to combat this is to open Activity Monitor and quit the Dock, thus giving me full control of my keyboard back again.
However, in the past 24 hours I’ve discovered something that I thought might be of use to someone with more insight into OS X than myself.  I’m a Kensington Mouse user of more than 15 years.  Their Mouseworks software allows one to customize mouse clicks in any way they see fit.  Yesterday I noticed that when I go into the Mouseworks preference panel and indicate that I’d like to define a specific command for this or that button, that once I click in the space that allows me to type this command, my simple click therein immediately publishes anywhere from 1 to a half dozen characters, without my command.  It’s almost as if somehow characters are being stored in my click.  For example, I just clicked in this box and without me touching the keyboard, the letters Q and W suddenly appeared therein.
How does this relate to Spaces?  A few hours ago when Spaces locked my keyboard, I went into Mouseworks and tried this again, and when I clicked in this box which displays any command accompanying my click, only the letter Q appeared on its own.  I then canceled out of this box and pressed the letter Q on my keyboard, and Spaces unlocked!  Suddenly my keyboard was free.  A short time later Spaces locked on me again.  Going back into Mouseworks, the input box displayed, “Q W Up Arrow” after I clicked therein.  I exited out and pressed each of these keys and Spaces freed up again.
While I am a lifelong Mac user, I’m not an expert by any imagination, so I don’t know what any of this means, definitively.  It appears to me, nonetheless, that for some reason, letters and commands, keyboard keys, are somehow lingering into my mouse clicks, and it appears as if Spaces is freezing my keyboard because it’s waiting for those buttons to be pressed.
Is this a keyboard error? A preferences error?  An OS X error?  I don’t know.  But I thought that if I shared my findings here, someone might be able to look into solutions that I can’t conceive.

Okay everyone, let me add to my own post, another piece of insight in the last 24.  First, let me post an image that might help define what I've described above:
According to the instruction I've given the Mouseworks software, this box should just be "command Q", a command I've assigned to that particular mouse button.  But when I click my mouse in this box, rather than just placing the cursor there, the letter “Q” and the symbol “[“ are deposited, without my every touching the keyboard.  I then use my keyboard to change Spaces, and my keyboard get locked out.  But then I type in these two letters, the Spaces image disappears, and my keyboard is free.
If my findings in the last 24 are consistent, then here's what I've surmised: If the only button I press on my mouse is the left button, then the Spaces does not freeze on my screen and my keyboard does not lock me out. But if I hit any other button on my mouse, a button wherein I've told my software to press a keyboard combination, then Spaces does freeze, until I go back into Mouseworks, find out what key combination is lingering, and then type that combination.
One more thing.  If I've gone into Mouseworks and discovered the key combination, and then typed that combination of letters, everything is back to normal. In fact, if I immediately go back to that Mouseworks screen and click my mouse therein, there are no longer any lingering letters.  If at this point I unplug my mouse, I can uses Spaces and my Trackpad all I want, bouncing back and forth between any Space I wish by using the keyboard, and Spaces never hangs.
My conclusion: Is it possible that each of us suffering from Spaces causing our keyboards to freeze is using an external mouse?  That seems totally plausible.  Or is it possible this problem is caused by those of us who are using software to have key commands activated when we click a button?  Doesn't Apple's own Magic Mouse software allow for such?
I can't imagine that finding this for myself is unique to me.  I also can't imagine that everyone with this problem is using a Kensington mouse; that seems WAY too coincidental.  But I can imagine there's a solution somewhere in this revelation.  Is it the mouse software we need to delete?  Is it a keyboard preference that's causing characters to linger in the clicking?  Is this all some evil scheme of Steve Jobs to force all of us to use the Magic Mouse?
Look into this for yourself!  Tell me what you guys find.

  • Different background for every Space?

Is there any utility that would let me specify a different background image for every Space?

That seems like a trivial feature, but it may be difficult to implement. The system would have to keep the other desktop images loaded in memory (one per space) so that switching would work seamlessly and immediately, without any delay. That's potentially 16 images. If the Mac had two displays, that's 32. And a Mac can have more displays...
To answer your question, I have not seen any utility to do that.
I think the idea for Spaces it that your desktop does not move or change. It's your open application windows that slide onto an off of your ONE desktop, based on how you have grouped them. Spaces is an extension of Exposé, which does the same type of thing with open windows. I like the way it works now, and I think it would be distracting and a bit jarring if the background also changed as the windows slid into place.

  • Can't view all my Spaces?

In the old MacBooks (black and white), I could set functions to my keys so that I could view all my Spaces. For example, I'd assign show Spaces to F5 so when I'd click F5, I could see all my four spaces laid out on the screen.
The new MacBook seems to have all function keys filled up now though. Even if I assign the show Spaces function to them, none of them ever show me all my Spaces. Real pain when I want to transfer one application's window to another Space.
Any tips how I could be able to switch to that view all Spaces screen?

try the multi-touch gestures and see if that will let you switch

  • Spaces - Every space?

Hi all... if this is the wrong place to post this I apologize in advance. I couldn't find a "spaces" discussion.
I have a new MacPro and have setup 6 "spaces" I am running XRG which is a resource graph so I can monitor how the machine is holding up under my load.
I went into spaces preferences and set it to be "every space". Well it isn't. It's only on the first space after a boot.
Even if I reboot (thinking that XRG was loading AFTER spaces or vice versa) no luck. The only thing that works is to go into prefs, and reassign it to all spaces then it works.
Any body got some ideas on how to fix?

I'm not sure either if this is where to discuss this spaces issue, but I'm experiencing a similar problem with my MacBook Pro since the update 10.5.6: the software I'm using is Parallels v4, set to every space, but it sticks to the space in which I start the program instead of being available in all spaces as specified in preferences.
The only solution which works (temporarily) is as you've described: go to preferences and "re-confirm" that you want the program to work in all spaces. If I stop the program and restart it later, it (again) sticks to the start-up space unless I "change" the prefs to all spaces.
I think it's a bug in update X.5.6 but would like to know if others have the same problem!

  • Whither "Show app on every Space"?

Hmm, Lion seems pretty cool so far, but it appears the option to display an app in every Space (or even to assign an app to a specific Space) is history.
    Am I missing something?
I typically have RSS feed tickers, and other dynamic information, displayed in every space on a second display so, no matter which Space I'm in, they're visible.  I've looked through the Mission Control prefs, but that option seems no longer available?

    Hi Clay,
Hmm, nope.  I didn't do anything special to enable it.  You should also be able to click-hold on the app icon while it's in the Dock.  A little menu will be displayed with an "Options" submenu.  This submenu contains the following:
    Keep in Dock
    Open at Login
    Show in Finder
    Assign To
      All Desktops
      This Desktop
      None
    Good luck!

  • Creating SCOM 2012 Logical Disk Space Availability View

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking to create a SCOM 2012 Logical Disk Space Availability View and having a little trouble finding documentation on how to do this. It would be really handy to see all of the servers being monitored and how much free space they have all in one view.

  • ITunes stays in the background when set to remain in every space

Under the Spaces preferences I have set iTunes to appear in every space but it behaves oddly when I do. If the main iTunes window is open and I click on another window then click on iTunes in the Dock, iTunes will become the active application but the window will remain in the background. If the main window is closed it will reopen when I click the Dock icon. This is contrasted with other applications like Mail and iChat which activate the main window on top regardless of their Spaces settings.
This is annoying as I would like to see the iTunes window to change music from all my Spaces with just one click of the Dock.
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this bug and if you have found a workaround.
    Thank you in advance,

    quantumhobbit,
I think I got it. Open System Preferences -> Exposé & Spaces -> Spaces tab -> check When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application.
    Hope that helps,

  • Can't assign Finder to "Every Space"

As I had anticipated, Spaces is my favorite feature in Leopard. Unfortunately, there is on quite annoying oversight in the design.
When you set up Spaces, you select which applications you want for each space. But, you can also choose "Every Space" if you want to float an application across all of the spaces. However, there is no way to select this option for the Finder!
This is a real pain. For example, say I open a Finder window in Space 1. Later on, I'm doing something in Space 2 and I need to open an file so I click on the Finder icon in the Dock. Ack! It switches back to Space 1!
I can work around this issue by right-clicking the icon and selecting "New Finder Window", but it sure would be nice to have a single Finder window that would float across all the spaces.
Anyway, if I'm missing something in the Spaces Preference pane that would allow me to assign the Finder to every space, please let me know.

I was having the same problem - I guess you've solved it by now, but I just saw this: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071027130921428 - basically you can find the Finder app in /System » Library » CoreServices » Finder.
