Spaces preferences carried over into Lion - can't get hash symbol

In Snow Leopard I used to use ALT + cursors to move around spaces (not CMD - this was because I liked CMD + cursors for 'Home' and 'End').
Therefore I also used ALT + 1, ALT + 2 etc to jump to spaces. Therefore my ALT + 3 never gave the hash symbol, it jumped to space 3. It wasn't an ideal solution, but I didn't use the hash key much.
Now, Lion seems to have kept (some) of this preference. ALT+ left/right cursor still moved between desktops (spaces), but ALT + 3 did nothing (no hash, no space movement).
I'd like to restore ALT + 3 to do the hash but I'm not sure how. I've deleted com.apple.spaces.plist from my library after finding a similar question on here, and rebooted. It has removed the ALT + cursor functionality but not restored ALT + 3 to be the hash key.
To summarise, ALT + 3 now does nothing, and I'd like it to do what it should do. When I look and the keyboard viewer and press ALT, it shows the hash symbol on the '3' key, but when i press it nothing happens. Keys 1,2 and 4 don't work with ALT either (I previously had 4 spaces in SL, so i'm sure this is the cause).
Sorry for long explanation!
Thanks for your thoughts.
Chris

Maybe I should have said I'm in the UK. On UK keyboards SHIFT + 3 gives £, it's ALT + 3 for #, which is what I'm trying to get.

I'm pretty sure my house doesn't have any internal wiring issues, but I suppose it's better safe than sorry. Regarding why my noise margin is currently so high, I don't know for sure but when I was first having issues I'm pretty sure I remember my IP profile being stuck at 135 kbps while I was syncing at about 1 mbps, I don't know if this could have contributed. My IP profile seems to be behaving fine now, though.

After upgrading to Lion can't get Boot Camp to work! Just get "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". Anytone?

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

Yes.  Switching to Mac might be overwhelming at first, but it is not difficult.  I Just started using Macs regularly about 9 months ago after using only Windows based pc's for over 15 years.  Macs come with TextEdit , but you can also purchase MS Office for Mac or use Apple's version, called iWork.Yes, you can partition the hard drive of a Mac.  Read these also: http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/.  With regular use of a Mac, you will be able to use it without even thinking about it, just like how you learned to use a WIndows pc.

    Try:
    - Going to NF support site/contacting them
    - Try a different adopter
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Ack!  Spaces is not working and I can't get to the system prefs!

So i thought I'd give "Spaces" another try. I clicked the button to turn it all and everything went haywire.
2 dozen apps open, several with dozens of windows each.
And now I can't get to them. I can switch to them via dock or command-tab, but none of the windows are visible. This includes, unfortunately, the actual system preferences window, which would allow me to shut spaces off.
If I press F19, all the windows for everything become visible, but if I try to click on any of them, they all disappear.
I have tried navigating through the spaces using my arrow keys, and while I do get the spaces indicator window popping up showing me shifting from space to space, most of the applications fail to appear.
I know I could just reboot and that would probably let me back in control, but I don't want to just crash out the apps I have up with the multiple windows open!
    Help!

Rebooting won't just 'crash' the apps. They are told to quit by Finder so that the restart will proceed in an orderly way.
If an application has a file open, it should pop up with a request to save option.
If it does, and finder won't let you click on the option you want, then you're in a bind anyway. If you can't bring up Activity Monitor and quit applications from there, then you will need to do a 'force quit' - Command + Option + Escape and choose to shut down the applications you can.
Although it's never recommended, you will probably need to just force the system down and reboot. Repair Permissions whenever you have to 'force' anything.

  • My entire iTunes music library is missing. It's like iTunes reset itself and started over. How can I get my music back?

How can I get my music library back? When I launch iTunes there's no music. It's like iTunes started over completely and I can't find any of my music anywhere.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
In the unlikely event that all the media has been inexplicably and permanently removed from your computer, see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Lion can't get update

I have Lion build 11A511 and it can't get update.
How to update my OS X 10.7 to 10.7.2? There no update in Software Update and in Mac App Store.

By reinstalling Snow Leopard or by logging onto your App Store account from another computer that has Snow Leopard instlled - 10.6.6 or later.
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • My hard drive died, it was replaced, now I don't have lion - can I get it back?

I got my Macbook Pro LAST July (2011), and because of the timeframe I got it in, I was able to enter a code and get LION for FREE!
I loved the hand gestures, but my hard drive died, and I got it completely replaced.... it seems like it went back to snow leopard... it says 10.6.7
how can I get lion back without paying for it like before? Is there a way?

hard drive died, and I got it completely replaced.... it seems like it went back to snow leopard... it says 10.6.7
Apple standard protocol is to replace the original OS that shipped on your Mac when it was new.
It might be wise to upgrade that 10.6.7 to the 10.6.8 before you install Lion.
    10.6.8 Combo http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Maybe others can verify this wisdom.
    and most importantly this supplemental:
(Note: there's a separate Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Supplemental Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1429  that is not included in the 10.6.8 "combo".)

  • Frozen pointer in mountain lion Can not get wi fi  or open close pages. Help!

The pointer is stuck in upper left corner. I can only go to preferences and force quit . Nothing, cannot get connected. By force closing and restarting all the closed pages reopen but I can't do anything.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Video adjustments don't carry over into iDVD 08

I have been attempting to move my iMovie 08 projects over to iDVD via Share>Media Browser, and this works, but the brightness/contrast/saturation adjustments that I've made in my iMovie Project do not show up when I import the movie via the Media Browser into iDVD. Instead, what I get is the original video settings, which are too dark. Everything else carries over, including cuts that I've made in the project window, but not the video appearance adjustments.
Why won't iDVD accept the iMovie video adjustments?

Update: I tried "sharing" my project to iTunes in mp4 format. That worked fine. The brightness adjustments were there, the movie looked good in iTunes. However, when I dragged it into iDVD and played it back, it was dark again!!! Further, I tried exporting the project to Quicktime, and even in the Quicktime viewer it had reverted to the too dark original! I really don't understand this. Why can't I make brightness adjustments in iMovie that will stick, and be useful in iDVD?

  • Junk left over from Lion - can I delete it?

Having reverted from Lion 10.7 to SL 10.6.8, I find some folders that I think are Lion specific (I know, I did it the wrong way; I should have wiped the disc before cloning back...but its too late now as I already updated a load of stuff, then re-cloned my source to update it before I noticed this stuff).
Can anyone tell me which of these I can safely delete? I'm assuming I definitely don't need DocumentRevisions-P100, not sure about the Spotlight-P100. I s that Lion specific Spotlight file? I don't think 10.6.8 supports mobilebackups either, and have not idea what .hotfiles.btree is.
    Any help much appreciated.

You are seeing a number of files/folders, the dimmed ones, that normally should be invisible. You DO NOT want to delete them. I'm seeing mostly 10.6 ones; there may be one or two that are Lion specific. I don't know Lion, but if they aren't doing any harm, just make them all invisible and forget about them.
Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
    To make visible.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files ( use this one):
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Restart or Force Quit Finder required to take effect.

  • RH9 formatting for glossary hotspots carried over into Word document

Is there a way to not carry the formatting for glossary hotspots (red italics) forward into my Word document generated from a RH9 project?  My internal client likes the glossary hotspots feature in the WebHelp version, but I don't want the added step of removing the formatting from the Word output (even though it is a very simple step).
In generating the Word document, I have selected to "Use styles from" a "Stylesheet" and "Apply CSS to all Topics" equals "(None) - Use the Project's CSS styles."

I think you would need to use a variation of the CSS where the links are formatted as required.
