Spaces With Extended Desktop

Is there any way to keep the contents of your extended display the same when you change spaces on the primary display? I often watch movies on my TFT or HDTV while working on the other screen. Unfortunately when you switch to another space, the movie disappears and you get a fresh new extension to the newly selected space.
Not holding out much hope for this one, but you never know.. perhaps a feature to come?
cheers.

ahh! figured it out, just had to set the app (vlc) to appear in all spaces in System Preferences. Presumably this will work with dvd player too

  • Always mirrors (won't start with extended desktop)

Since upgrading to leopard, I have the following problem: Whenever I plug my MacBook into a particular external monitor (a projector with 800 X 600 resolution), it automatically goes into mirroring mode - even if I last used it in extended desktop mode. I can then turn off mirroring, but all my windows have shrunk (to fit 800 x 600) and have moved. I leave mirroring off when I unplug - but then the next time I plug in, the same thing happens. I want it to start in extended desktop mode, and not automatically enter into mirroring mode. Any ideas?

10.9.3 and 10.9.4 have known issues with displays attached via Thunderbolt (for example see here Second display problem with 10.9.4 and 10.9.4 - Thunderbolt display for 6630M (Mini mid-2011) still broken ).

  • Front Row with Extended Desktop

Im interested in purchasing a new Macbook and using it along side my plasma. Is it possible to run Front Row from the macbook using its screen for the interface and displaying the content on the plasma via the extended desktop?

Currently Front Row only displays its menus and video content on the primary display. Any other displays are blacked out while Front Row is activated.

  • Flash full Screen with extended desktop

I'm running vista but this has happened to me in XP as well.
I have two monitors one of them is configured to be an extended
desktop. I view a standard flash video such as one at
thedailyshow.com and click to view in full screen. I want the full
screen on the extended desktop but it displays in my primary
    monitor.
    How do I fix this?

lame.. but how come its not the same in all cases. if I view
the flash video on nbc.com that will full screen in the extended
    desktop, as will youtube
    whats the difference in implementation?

  • Issue when playing movie on full screen with extended desktop.

I'm running Itunes on Windows and I'm using a dual monitor configuration. When I play a movie and go to full screen, Itunes will go full screen on the current screen but also will set black the second monitor. So, when I go full screen I lost the second monitor. Why!!?
Is there any way to go full screen without touching my second monitor? I usually see movies while I do other stuff in the second monitor.

  • Problem with Extended Desktop

I have a 20" iMac Core Duo. I recently hooked up a 17" CRT as a dual monitor. It works great EXCEPT that when I go full screen in the second monitor with videos in iTunes, it blacks out my main monitor. I want to go full screen in the second monitor while maintaining my main desktop.
I can't find any settings to fix this. Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies so far. The monitor doesn't seem to be out of range. It's the main display that goes dark, not the CRT.
Unfortunately, the CRT does not support the same resolutions as the iMac display, but they both work just fine otherwise.
Also, the visual plug-in looks interesting, but my main issue is with video in iTunes such as video podcasts.
It's looking more and more like the first response was correct, that OS X simply isn't capable of doing this.
Maybe there are third-party apps that extend the dual-monitor capabilities in OS X?

  • Tablet PC calibration error in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 whilst in Extended Desktop Mode

    Hey everyone!
I've run into a snag which hasn't bugged me before because I never used a second monitor, but now that I do, Photoshop and Illustrator don't function properly.
I am running my Adobe products on my Lenovo X61 Thinkpad Tablet, which is Wacom PenEnabled. It's got the basic digitizer pen and pen pressure features, no stylus tilt or anything.
Whenever I run Photoshop or Illustrator in Extended Desktop Mode so I can have a different window open on my external monitor and the Adobe app on my tablet screen, my stylus goes strange. It seems to think that the extended desktop is part of the Adobe window, so when I move my stylus to draw, the cursor will appear on the external monitor, usually proportionate to the size of the screen...ie. It interprets the external and tablet screens as one desktop and the top left corner of my tablet screen is the top left of my external, whilst the bottom right on tablet IS the bottom right on tablet, if that makes any sense...sorry.
So I can't draw anything in photosho unless I set it back to standard desktop mode, or mirrored desktop. I've searched over the net and these forums and I can't find a fix for this. I was walking in harvey norman the other day and the Wacom Cintiq 12" was there on display, and it had the same issue with extended desktop and photoshop.
Has anyone had this issue before and/or does anyone know of a fix for it? I'll keep searching around and playing with the computer until I fix it and I'll post any solutions I find here if noone else has one.
    My system details are:
    Abobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.0
    Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.0
OS: Windows Vista Build 6001, Service Pack 1, 32bit
    RAM: 2GB
HD: 18.2GB free Disk Space (out of 66.3GB on the Active Partition)
Video: Intel GMA: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I'm using an HP tx2011au tablet pc, using adobe flash cs3 and have the exact same problem. it becomes decalibrated only while the flash window is open, and only while flash has a file open, and only when using an extended desktop. even if flash is open and it has no files open it works fine.

  • Extended Desktop - Assigning Spaces

Is it possible to make a second display it's own 'space' when using an extended desktop?
I recently started using a second monitor when I am at home, and I'd like to set it up so that certain applications always open up on the extended desktop. Any idea if this is possible/how I can do it?
Also, I have noticed that my MB's performance suffers when I am using the second monitor. Is this a frequent problem, or am I being paranoid?
(I only have 1 GB ram, if that makes a difference)

More RAM would definitely help. Just so you know this does not work with every application. You first need to assign the application to it's space. Now open the app. It will open on the internal monitor. Now choose the space icon in the dock so that the spaces screen pops up. Drag the application to the external screen that is the mate that you originally set it too. Now click so you got to that applications screen. Close the program and the next time you open it it should open on the correct screen. As I said some work some don't so don't be surprised if it doesn't work for every one you do.

  • Extended desktop mode with external display

I use my Macbook with an external display. Sometimes I need to use extended desktop mode and sometimes I don't need the extra desktop space and prefer to work only with my external display. My needs change as I work throughout the day and I'm getting tired of having to close the Macbook to put it to sleep and then wake it up without opening the lid to just have one display (the external one).
I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a way to put the Macbook built-in display to sleep while continuing to work with the external display, without having to put the Macbook to sleep first. I'm thinking that there's got to be a way to do this (maybe there's a piece of software out there or some other work around?).

Thanks for your suggestion. That's actually a workaround I've used. The only problem is, the display isn't really put to sleep. The result: I still get an extended desktop and occasionally I "lose" my pointer. A bit annoying, but thus far the only solution I've come up with.

  • Macbook Pro Retina: can anyone help me with running 2 extended desktop DVIs?

I know I need 2 thunderbolt to DVI adapters for this. In the UK these are £25 each, but the MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapters which look the same are very much cheaper .....
    http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Female-Adapter-Macbook-Laptop/dp/B003BHHIA4/re f=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1359830910&sr=1-1&keywords=minidisplayport+to +DVI
They look the same as thunderbolt to DVIs but is there a difference? Anybody know if the thunderbolt to DVI is an ACTIVE adapter, which means the cheaper versions won't work?
Secondly, I've read scary stuff here from people who think their thunderbolt to DVI fried their monitors. Is there any evidence which supports this?
Does anyone out there use two extended desktop DVIs on a daily basis with a Pro Retina? Any tips or things I should know?

I suggest you buy the Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapters as I have tried another brand and it dod not work. That was on a late 15" 2011 model, YMMV.
Second I have never heard of a Apple TB/MDP to DVI adapter ever frying a monitor of any make or model.
Please post references to this claim.
May be possible with a poorly desinged adapter with some of the TB power output being cross linked to one of the DVI pins/connectors. But still doubtful.

  • Using extended desktop mode with ThinkPad x220

I have an Acer AL2216W external monitor. It has a resolution of 1680 x 1050
    http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/monitor/0000/Acer/AL2216W/AL2216Wsp2.shtml
When I use extended desktop mode with the external monitor set as the primary display, everything scales properly on both the external and internal monitor.
However, if I set the internal monitor as the primary display, the external display does not fill the screen (there is a big black border around the desktop).
In both cases, the resolution setting for the external monitor is 1680 x 1050.
    Is this normal behaviour?

    Hello,
That's how Windows behaves.  Supposedly Realtime Soft Ltd.'s UltraMon gives you more precise control over wallpaper under Windows, but I have not used it myself.

  • Can I use dual 24" displays as an extended desktop with my MacBook?

I have a 2.4 GHz MacBook I purchased this summer. I was considering using it for my desktop needs, but I need to have a two-monitor extended desktop. I don't particularly care for the thought of using the notebook's monitor in addition to the 24" display. I'd rather have dual 24" displays, but in talking with the "chat" line on the store website, they said this is impossible to have an extended desktop this way. I'm stubborn and can't help but think that is not impossible with the appropriate work-around.
    Suggestions? Thoughts?
    Thanks so much.

The only option for dual external displays on a Mac laptop is the Matrox DualHead2Go. But with a MacBook, you could only get a maximum of 1024x768 on the two montors, a completely waste of a 24" monitor IMO.

  • I saturated all the available iPad (3rd. generation) screen space (home screens or desktop space) with apps, and the apps that got bumped out of the last screen, mysteriously disappeared? Where are those missing quick lauch app icons?

Running my 3rd generation iPad on iOS 7.0.4, I saturated all the available iPad screen space (which would be the 15 home screens or desktop worth of space) with apps, and the apps that got bumped out of the last screen space mysteriously disappeared. Where are those missing quick lauch app icons now? The apps are still installed and can be searched/accessed through the finder, but they no longer have a user friendly access. How can I solve this problem?

Hi Hexonxonx, thanks for trying to help, but next time please read the entire discussion, in oder to better comprehend what is being asked. The reason being is that your answer added nothing to what had already been mentioned.
Like I said, I was aware it was possible to access the apps through the finder, but the question revolved around how to recover the quick launch app icons for certain vanished apps.
Wow, kind of a snotty response to someone who was taking their own time to offer help.  Whether you thought it was helpful or not, didn't deserve such an unkind retort.  Maybe when you realize we all just users here trying to help others like you, who have issues and we don't get anything in return for the countless hours some people here spend offering that assistance, you'll maybe be a little less quick to be critical.
    Just sayin.......
Oh and Meg offered the right answer.  Put your Apps in Folders, which will create extra space for the apps which have disappeared.

  • Extended desktop with 2 LEDTVs and VGA?

    Hi everyone,
I really need some help here.
I have 2 40" Samsung LEDTVs with the model UA40D5003BRXXM. They are docked on the wall side by side. Basically i want to achieve extended desktop (not mirroring) for my mac mini (if can). Assume I open a browser 1 on 1st LEDTV, i can drag that browser to the 2nd LEDTV. So i can see more stuff at 1 time.
However I am not using HDMI or DVI as the cables are too short. Based on my contractors, HDMI cable is max 2 meters. So we got them to work on VGA cables. The mac mini and the LEDTVs are quite far away. The cables are already connected below the flooring and hacked into the wall.
    So few questions:-
    a) how can i connect 2 VGA cables to my mac mini?
    b) can I achieve dual LEDTVs for extended desktop here?
If i can't find a way to do it, then i will have to buy non Mac here i prefer mac if can.
    Any help? Thanks.

I have never personally used one of these DisplayLink adapters myself. According to their Mac software download page, you can have up to 4 of them on a single Mac. See http://www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php
I could not find specific mention of whether it supports using them as an extended desktop rather than mirroring, but as they support up to four screens (on a Mac) and mirroring only applies to using two, one can deduce this means extended desktop is supported.
Upate: Ok, the user guide does confirm extended desktop support is included, as well as mirroring.
Note: USB does not have enough bandwidth to drive multiple hi-res screens at the same time, DisplayLink gets round this by using the computers GPU to compress the data before sending it to the DisplayLink interface. They do say it supports playing movies. However I personally would expect that you may see some peformance hit and that the low end Mac mini with just an Intel GPU might struggle.
I could not find system requirements for Mac use other than that it currently is not Lion compatible - just spotted a beta version for Lion so you could use it.
If your VGA cable is not solidly embedded in plaster etc. i.e. is reasonably loose, you could consider (after testing the Cat5 HDMI devices) using the VGA cable to pull the new cable through.
