Spam getting past ORF spam filter
We are running Exchange Server 2007 with ORF version 5.2. Most of our spam has been taken care of besides a few here and there but one person specifically is still getting lots of spam. I enabled the junk email protection through outlook but
I would like to block it before it gets to outlook. Any suggestions?
Hello,
You should make sure these spam messages from random senders or specified senders/ IP address.
You can check the spam message header to find the sender/ sender IP address. And then add the sender IP address to IP Block List to check the result.
Here is an article for your reference.

Spam getting past email server
Why has my email server started letting so much spam get through? What can I do to stop it? Thanks.
Your question is too vague.
First off you need to realize you will not stop all spam. Mega-corporations have spent billions trying to 'fix' spam, so don't think you're going to solve the issue yourself.
On that basis, the best you can hope for is reducing spam to a manageable level - at least as far as your users' mailboxes are concerned. However, you don't state how much spam you're getting... are you getting 1? 10? 100? 10,000 spam messages an hour? so it's impossible to tell whether you're in the realm of normal behaviour or not.
You also don't state whether the spam is directed at your domain, or specific user mailboxes?
Are some users getting more spam than others?
Is the spam actually getting to users' mailboxes or is it getting blocked before it gets that far?
Also, you state your server has 'started letting so much spam through', so the most pertinent question is what have you changed - these things don't radically change on their own so the chances are something's changed on your server that's having an effect.
So, more data please. -
I just upgraded my 3GS to IOS5, and now at work when i am connected to our WiFi I can no longer get out to the internet.
A little back story on how it worked prior to ios5:
I would connect via wireless, and then load Safari and type in a webpage I wanted to go to. A pop up box would come up, to authenticate me on our Web filter server (Running Smartfilter), I woudl enter my regular Active Directory username and Password and boom, i could then surf to my hearts content.
After the upgrade, I connect to the wireless, load Safari, type in the webpage i want to go to, and the progress bar moves abotu 3mm and then stops, I never get the smart filter prompt.
I have tried a full reset on the phone, forget network, reset all network settings, I even tried putting in the IP address of the smart filter box as a proxy and still it doesnt work. I have gone to smartfilters website to see if anyone else has posted there, or if there was a clue as to why it doesnt work, but nothing so far.
anyone else having this problem? any ideas?
If it wasnt broken, why would apple mess with it! a LOT of companies run smartfilter as well as other web filters. I thought apple was trying to seduce corporate customers, and so far a lot of poeple are dissapointed that they cant get to the internet.
tha
nks in advance for any assistance.
jI am having the same problem. The issue also occurs with Safari on Mac OS 10.7. I work for a school and I am sure that other schools are using smartfilter too.

How to I get rid of Spam?
I get so much spam on my Verizon account I can't use it as my main account. I get pages of spam every day. I have a g-mail account and a mac.com account that works great. Wish verizon.net did.
I would think that Verizon would have a spam filter.
Solved!

They do. Do you have it turned on for your email account? If not, do so, it may help. Of course you can also create custom filters to recognize and delete emails that get through the SPAM filter, but unfortunately the filtering is pretty basic, there is no ability to filter just by domain, for example.

We're getting much more spam again recently ... the spammers must have changed something to get through the filters.
I'm using the default mail service from Apple with a RBL and a scan for junk mail score of 3. Any ideas what I could do more?Alex's Frontline Defenses are a great method of fighting spam. His guidelines will eliminate about 80 percent of the spam reaching your server.
The next step is properly training Spamassassin to filter the remaining spam e-mails getting through. Alex's spamtrainer <http://osx.topicdesk.com/content/view/37/58/> is a great tool for achieving that purpose. -
Spam - Cloudmark Desktop equivalent (spam filter addon)
I understand there are a lot of threads about spam, we all hate it and we all want to get rid of it... this thread is about finding a Cloudmark Desktop plugin equivalent for the MAC OS.
I'm a switcher, and with outlook on the pc i was able to use this nifty tool to get rid of spam for the most part. currently i end up with 200 spam emails on average per day using Mail on the mac. For a little while i've tried using the onboard spam learning filters, but i've stopped using them as i'm trying afraid of missing legit emails so i'm trying to find a solution much like I had before with Cloudmark.
Or... maybe the solution is a simple one... learn the Mail filers better?
Thank you for your time, and any help or light you can shine upon this everlasting subject.
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Rick,
In response to:
Mmmm, no I'm not here to teach you how to run a
public internet mail server
(public-to-the-internet).
You should have learned mailserver basics before you
started running a public server.
Horde and Squirrel are not mail servers. They are
WebMail or IMAP clients.
Email server software for Linux might be 'qmail',
'postfix'.
Correct, Horde etc. are my webmail clients. I mentioned these because I assumed you wanted to get in to the SpamAssassin and BoxTrapper configurations.
My mail server is exim 4.63.
SpamAssassin and BoxTrapper are both good. They will
very rarely let you "lose" mail, depending on your
configuration.
If you installed all these applications to work
side-by-side with your mailserver, I would have
expected more informed answers (But that's not bad!)
My apologies.
Filtering that happens on the server can solve much
of your 200-Junk-Mails-per-day.
You just have a lot to learn. And we're getting off
topic.
If I knew everything, I wouldn't be asking questions
We weren't wasting time.
You got some good suggestions about Cloudmark
replacements.
(spamfire, spamsieve)
We had a little chat about filtering being done on
the server.
We were starting to drift off the subject.
I was referring to not intending on wasting your personal time as some your responses seem a little rough around the edges.
You simply couldn't answer questions about your mail
server, that you should have known the answer for
(name of email server software, etc).
No biggie.
... Exim 4.63
Check my profile, and drop me a note off-list, if you
want some different tips or help with your server.
I appreciate the offer.
For anyone following this topic I've done the following:
- Decided not to purchase a third party spam filter addon at this time.
- Although I've looked in to server side SpamAssassin and BoxTrapper configurations, I've decided to not use either of these for now as I'm trying to teach Mac Mail's spam filter the ropes. I always hesitate to auto-delete emails in fear I might miss something. Being that I normally use Mac Mail, I'd have to sift through the **SPAM** mails generated by SpamAssassin anyways. As I'm teaching Mail to identify spam, I don't think counting one then the other would do anything more than confuse the process and make more work for me in the long run. (I could be wrong.)
- Using exclusively Mac Mail's spam filter I've manually sifted through over 7,000 spam messages in hopes to teach the software what I'm looking for it to identify.
- Of these 7,000 spam messages, I 'bounced' them all back using Mail... every one of them. This was done somewhat out of frustration, but if I understand this correctly spammers don't want to waste their time and resources emailing bad emails. By bouncing emails back to the source (if the spam email was valid) I'm hoping to get knocked off spam lists over time. I had a brief concern of server load, but everything was smooth. A drawback is many of the spam emails are not valid, so getting many returned mails is part of the process, and honestly it's worth it. (for me)
- I don't think my spam problem will ever go away entirely. I'll always have to manually scan all emails at least briefly. The hope is to get Mail's spam filter accurate so suspected spam is in a spam box, and my regular mail boxes are clean. When it's time to manually scan the junk mail box, in time it should be pretty quick.
Thank you to everyone's helpful responses, as Rick mentioned indeed I have much to learn! -

In the short run, assuming an extension is to blame, you may want to use Firefox in its Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset). -

Always_bcc user gets all killed spam
Interesting one that I just noticed. I don't think there is any way around it but mentioning just in case...
If you have a 'user' in the 'Copy All Mail To:' box (in my case the 'mailarchive' user, then even if a piece of spam gets rejected due to being over the Kill level, it still gets sent to the mailarchive user.
This appears counter-intuitive when tracking the message through the mail.log. The always_bcc account gets added at the very beginning, after the initial connection (evidenced by having nrcpt=2)...
<pre class=command>postfix/smtpd[18899]: connect from mail5.onyx.net[194.176.73.196]
postfix/smtpd[18899]: 56DAF4C7CE: client=mail5.onyx.net[194.176.73.196]
postfix/cleanup[18902]: 56DAF4C7CE: message-id=<[email protected]>
postfix/qmgr[18880]: 56DAF4C7CE: from=<[email protected]>, size=3041, nrcpt=2 (queue active)
postfix/smtpd[18899]: disconnect from mail5.onyx.net[194.176.73.196]</pre>
You then see the handover to amavisd...
<pre class=command>postfix/smtpd[18908]: connect from localhost[127.0.0.1]
postfix/smtpd[18908]: 69D7F4C7F1: client=localhost[127.0.0.1]
postfix/cleanup[18902]: 69D7F4C7F1: message-id=<[email protected]>
postfix/qmgr[18880]: 69D7F4C7F1: from=<[email protected]>, size=3658, nrcpt=2 (queue active)
postfix/smtpd[18908]: disconnect from localhost[127.0.0.1]</pre>
Where the spam is scored beyond the Kill level and sent to the spamquarantine account...
<pre class=command>postfix/pipe[18914]: 69D7F4C7F1: to=<[email protected]>, relay=cyrus, delay=1,
status=sent (mail.panoramicscotland.com)</pre>
Then reject notices are seen for the two recipients, including the always_bcc = mailarchive user...
<pre class=command>postfix/smtp[18903]: 56DAF4C7CE: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1], delay=26,
status=bounced (host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 550 5.7.1 Message content rejected,
UBE, id=18707-01 (in reply to end of DATA command))
postfix/smtp[18903]: 56DAF4C7CE: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1], delay=26,
status=bounced (host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 550 5.7.1 Message content rejected,
UBE, id=18707-01 (in reply to end of DATA command))
server postfix/qmgr[18880]: 56DAF4C7CE: removed</pre>
A bounce message is sent to the sender...
<pre class=command>server postfix/cleanup[18902]: 2EF134C7F8: message-id=<[email protected]>
server postfix/qmgr[18880]: 2EF134C7F8: from=, size=5413, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
server postfix/pipe[18914]: 2EF134C7F8: to=<[email protected]>, relay=cyrus, delay=0,
status=sent (mail.panoramicscotland.com)
server postfix/qmgr[18880]: 2EF134C7F8: removed</pre>
However, the original message is still sent to the mailarchive...
<pre class=command>server postfix/pipe[18911]: 69D7F4C7F1: to=<[email protected]>, relay=cyrus, delay=1,
status=sent (mail.panoramicscotland.com)
server postfix/qmgr[18880]: 69D7F4C7F1: removed</pre>
It appears that the always_bcc option bypasses any intermediate rejection by amavisd - note that message id (69D7F4C7F1) references original message prior to handover to amavisd and rejection within this). Arguably, this is intentional but slightly annoying due to receiving unnecesary spam.
Any ideas?
-david
Applicable amavisd.conf settings...
$spamquarantineto = '[email protected]';
$finalspamdestiny = D_REJECT;
$sakill_leveldeflt = 5.0;
Applicable postfix main.cf setting...
always_bcc = [email protected]The only solution (hopefully) I see, would be to
add:
-o always_bcc=
below:
127.0.0.1:10025 inet n - n - - smtpd -v
in master.cf
That didn't do it, Alex (I thought it would, too, after you suggested it) but you put me onto the right track though...
The solution appears to be 'receiveoverride_options=no_addressmappings' in same location. There is already an option there for the receiveoverrideoptions so the noaddressmappings just gets added to it...
Pre-existing clause...
<pre class=command>127.0.0.1:10025 inet n - y - - smtpd
-o receiveoverride_options=no_header_bodychecks</pre>
New clause...
<pre class=command>127.0.0.1:10025 inet n - y - - smtpd
-o receiveoverride_options=no_header_body_checks,no_addressmappings</pre>
Only killed mail being forwarded to spamquarantine account gets NOT copied. tagged spam and clean mail (incoming & outgoing) all get bcc'd as normal. Also works for the virusquarantine account if this is configured for a mail account (in amavisd.conf).
Thanks,
-david

How to get rid of spam on iPad

Suddenly getting thousands of spam
I installed firefox thuderbird, i never used it. I did today and now in apple mail i have started to get thousands of spam. It's always delivering 207 emails at a time. What has happened. Also the spam emails are dated sent on 20th september.......help
I'm very sorry.
Yours sounds like an attack. Being one of the first to hear, by phone, of voting irregularities in Miami, during the Bush election, I wrote the Secretary of State of Florida and asked it be investigated. I immediately received about 500 e-mails a day from Hong Kong, advertising child p.o.r.n.o.g.r.a.p.h.y.
How to get spam
It may also be an adolescent paid for each spam letter he sends. Spyware on the PC may have given him a new address. Also, did you receive a letter with a dozen people on the TO line rather than a group name or the sender's name, with the long list of recipients on the BCC line instead? All it takes is one insecure computer to put you in a spam list, which is then sold worldwide. Bots extract every e-mail address on a public web page.
New Version
I've had no trouble with 3.6.11, though one extension may have slowed. However, I receive mail in Thunderbird's and Apple Mail's Inbox only from people in my address book or previous recipients. The rest goes in Junk, which I peruse in text only. Spam, I forward to SpamCop and Knujon.
What to do with spam
http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/7.html
What to do about spam attacks
I also have four mail accounts that use different spam filters. I ask some to reject spam, and one address filters that mail through the rejecting sites before coming to me. This eliminates most spam during an attack like yours. (My .Mac account is very good at filtering. It may use SpamCop and SpamHaus's lists.)
If you join SpamCop (free to send them spam), you'll have access to their forum. Spam slows the web, and the above doesn't help.
Source
Where did you get Firefox? Always use a malware-free archive. Mine came from MacUpdate, but there is VersionTracker, Softpedia, and more.
Last attempt
Finally, if you can't deal with that amount of mail, write your ISP or change your mailing address. I have two alumni accounts from Ivy League American schools. They each receive the same two dozen malicious spam letters every day. I keep the accounts as 'spam traps', to report malicious spam. Don't use your name in reports, and mail from spam accounts.
My ISP was phished for passwords from Russia, so reporting must be a good thing. (My ISP CEO advised that I continue to report; he could deal with the attacks.)
Example of a spam store
My Quicksilver was packed with security programs (even tripwire): I pretended to buy Guicci loafers from a beautiful spam for a clothing store in Canada. It came from a server near Beiing, and took me to Seoul, southern Brazil, Istanbul, and the Ukraine. The help line was near Istanbul. (Always near the border to another country.) They wanted to know what time of day I would NOT be home, and had an impressive list of seals, all just images. The store looked most professional and appealed to the ignorant.
Why must people know about spam designed to get their credit cards and all about seals? The US State Department and ICANN could stop much, and Knujon provides them reports.
Best of luck,
Bruce -
Why do I get dozens of Spam the day after making a Tech Services Call to India?
Lately I have had to make numerous calls to Tech Support. Each time the following day I find a dozen or more SPAM in my inbox. Normally I get maybe 1 or 2 per week but after making these Tech Services calls ( either chat or phon) I get dozens. Seems to me that someone in India is doing this. Please find the culprits and stop them. It is very disturbing when one of these tech tries to gain access to my computer, especially when every call results in a different excuse for internt connection issues. To allow somone half-way across the world access to your computer is very dangerous because you have no way to legally punish them for any information thefts. Demand US based service only. and to VERIZON Stop selling my email to Spamers. I do not use my Verizon email for any internet purchases, forums or anything that can result in spam yet with in hours of a contact to Verizon I get dozens of Spam so I know that Verizon is the problem.
No body likes spam, so I could see how frustrating this would be. Are the spam emails you are receiving from Verizon or other senders?

How do I get past ES4 Install Failure during Component Deployment in Configuration Manager?
I have done several installs of LiveCycle, but can't seem to get passed this error. I am installing a fresh copy of ES4 on a Windows 2008 R2 server using the JBOSS partial turnkey install. I have it configured to connect to a SQL Server database instead of the turnkey MySql database. LiveCycle installs and then Configuration Management starts successfully. I am able to get past the database initialization. The following step is the Component deployment. All the JAR files deploy correctly, but then it hangs when trying to deploy the LCA files. I have had a similar problem before and increasing the Transaction Timeout in the application server configuration solved it. I increased the Transaction Timeout without any success. Doing this a couple of the LCAs deployed while the others did not.
