SPAM in Messages via iChat / AIM

used Messages and iChat before that, for many a moon and never really suffered with SPAM/pop ups
yesterday I got one, and then a second pop up wanting me to click a link:
so while I went off and gathered my credit card and bank details, poised to hand them over at the ready
wondered if anyone knew why or is experiencing a breakdown in the Deflector Shield??
privacy level is set to Block Specific People (and has been for forever)
Messages 7.0.1 - MountainGoat 10.8.5
Messages 8.0 - Yosemite 10.10

"Rend Error" when sending image via iChat/AIM

On my brand new iMac aluminum, I am unable to send, and friends are unable to send, images via iChat AIM 3.1.8 (V445). When either of us try to send, we get the message "An undefined AIM error has occured. The server message was: Rend: Error"
I then spin around and use my old G4 iMac to send an image - no problem. My buddy is also able to send to me, no problem.
Both computers are connected to the same Linksys WRT54G router. When I searched for the term 'rend' only one thread came back which suggested to change the port from 5190 to 443. I did this and it didn't help.
Any other suggestions?

In the Linksys set up pages you have Application and Gaming (Which is where I think you are talking about)
In there there are several options.
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DMZ (possibly UPnP Forwarding and QoS)
Disable any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. DO not use the DMZ.
Save settings. (you should still have Web browsing and Mail abilities).
GO to the Administration tab on the top row.
Enable UPnP.
Save Settings.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
This way the Linksys can be left doing DHCP if you wish and it will not matter if your computer gets a new IP every now and then. Also the Ports are opened by the application and close after a timed period of non use.
You can limit the "Hops" to the number of devices the computer is from the Linksys (1 ?) to make it more secure.
On the main set up page you could limit the the DHCP range to the number of computers you have to prevent outside connections.
The ports you describe so far are only the TExt chatting and file sending ports

Cannot receive messaged via iChat on iPhone, why??

I am not receiving texts from other iPhone users via iChat. Non iPhone users texts come through and all when I turn iChat off. I can send out on iChat but apparently am not getting any back. Any ideas why?

What happens if you open a message and then copy multiple pictures into it (rather than doing it from the Photo app)?

When I try to log on to my ichat I get the error message "An undefined AIM socket error has occurred.". How do I resolve this?

The error message "An undefined AIM socket error has occurred." comes up when I try and log on to ichat.

10.8 mac can't send messages to ichat 6 10.7.3 mac

so a friend of mine just got a new macbook pro. I am wanting to communicate with her on our macs. I have a macbook with 10.7.3 and ichat 6. When she sends me messages, they go to my iphone instead of ichat. When I turn off my iphone and she sends my ichat screen name (ending with @mac.com) she gets a message saying that my screen name is not registered with imessage. My screen name is not associated to my iphone, only my cell # is set to receive imessages at. What can I do to receive to have my imessages that I want to come to ichat 6 on my mac, actually come to my mac?

In Mountain Lion she has Messages.
Messages is iChat+
That is to say that the iMessages service has been added to iChat and the Name changed.
iMessages is closer to SMS on a phone than the AIM service but it is essentially a different Messaging service.
iMessages uses Apple IDs
Of course some Apple IDs issued by Apple (@Mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com) are also Valid AIM names.
As iChat does not have the iMessages part any messages she sends or tries to Send cannot be sent via iMessage.
If you ae using the same Apple ID as the Apple ID on the iPhone (Or iOS version) of Messages then they will go there.
If she has one of the three type of Apple ID I listed Above then she needs to go to Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts and press the + button lower left and add the Apple ID as if it were an AIM Name (It is a Valid Name of course)
NOTE
She must keep the password for this Apple ID to 16 character or less to use with AIM as this is the AIM server limit.

"Failed to respond" message on iChat

Hello, i thought posting my problems in this board was more appropriate than iSight.
I am unable to connect video chat with a PC user (with AIM 5.9) via iChat AV 3.0.1. I can connect to the test appleu3test01 user for video chat but not my PC friend. I continue to ge tthe "Failed to respond" error message.
please help! i've tried to read the step by step pages on instructions but it seems i've tried to eliminate plists and reset port numbers but nothing is working.

If the PC user is on XP and has Service PAck 2 installed they mey need to Enable AIM thorugh the XP firewall

Offline message support for AIM gone?

Is it just me or did Apple remove offline message support for AIM (MobileMe, AppleID) Accounts? Until now I could send people, using an AIM/MobileMe Account ID in iChat like me, a message while they were offline. When they came back online later the message was delivered then, even if I were offline then. Now I only get a red icon with an exclamtion mark instead. If I open the information panel for an account, the summary about what the contact account is capable of is now also missing "offline messages" for AIM accounts. However this information is displayed for iMessage accounts.
Somebody else also experiencing this issue - or is it just me?

Apple are going to love me for this test.
I showed my Off Line AIM Buddies.
I selected one of the Apple test accounts for Video testing that happened to be Off line
No Exclamation mark or message that they do not accept Off Line IMs (Older @mac.com name)
A current/new iCloud @me.com name my well respond differently.
You could login here https://settings.aim.com/ with AIM, @mac.com and MobileMe issued @me.com names and set the Off Line Messaging response.
You cannot login here with iCloud issued ones (In iChat and Messages it requires a login to me.com and AIM to get the password and you cannot do the dual Login on that page)
It maybe the apple have arranged that all iCoud @me.com names have Off Line IMs turned Off.
This may cross over to all @me.com names (How are AIM going to tell the difference ?)

G5 crashes when I try to send files via iCHAT

No idea whats causing it but when I try to send files via ichat it gets about 10mb in and then the machine crashes....
Don't think its to do with my broadband connection as this seems stable and am not running any other programs in the background.......Desparate to sort this -please help.

Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
I can not find anything on the AIM site that suggests there is a Limit on file sizes.
The largest one I have tried myself was 9.2Mb
The closest thing I could find to the point in question was the last question on this page.
If the file is not stuffed so far you could try that to make it smaller.
I have AIM 4.7 for Mac and can not see any info in the Help there about any limit to the size of File Transfers.

IMing to non-ichat/aim pc users

Does anyone know of a good IM for talking to non ichat/aim pc users? I tried yahoo messenger and couldn't get the voice or video to work.

iChat has an Idle coloured blob for Buddies that are Available but have not touched anything on their keyboard for a while.
Other client offer the chance to distinguish between Away and Idle-Away buddies as well.
iChat can not do this last option even though it is part of the AIM Protocols (it's ignored rather than not implemented on the iChat end) But as it is part and parcel so to speak your Buddies with clients that can tell see you as not Idle if you just have the Away message up.
On other clients you can not call Away Buddies were as in iChat you can be called.

Central Quarantine 'Deliver messages via'

I have setup our central quarantine box on the m660 and have spam messages going there. In the config setup, I put two ironport boxes in the 'deliver messages via' so that the release message can go through the routing again and deliver to the correct mail store. But when I release a message, it gets caught again and gets sent back to the quarantine. I was thinking of setting up a message filter to handle this but I currently feel this is a janky fix. Is anyone else using multiple mail stores and the ironport as the 'Deliver Messages Via'?

I'm sorry, I have no direct experiance with this. but if I follow the answer given by Mark i think there is a more easy way to get this done.
if you add a condition to your content filter "remote IP is not " the filter will ignore the messages received from your M series.

Address Book - mobile phone drop-down menu to send SMS via iChat

Using iChat, you can send a SMS text message to mobile phones using the format of +19375551212. And depending on the wireless service, the receipient can reply to the text message and that message will appear via iChat. Anyone know of any plugin or app that can add this menu option to the mobile phone number menu?

Send message via Wi-Fi

i'm a new hand, and i want to develop an App for iphone, the App should be able to send and receive text message with other iphones,i mean the App could connect with other devices via Wi-Fi but not SMS,can anybody give me a hand please,thank you.

You're going to want to elaborate on your environment and on your goals. Terse questions often aren't easy to answer, after all.
Consider whether you have or want a peer or a server running on the target (this isn't common practice on iOS), or whether you're looking for something akin to iChat or Jabber or Twitter, or if you're looking to use Apple Push Notification Service (APNs), or something else, and on why you're looking to avoid SMS.
Messages via IP or any number of other protocols are entirely feasible, but you have to contend with the target clients on iOS that might well go into the background in this context; you get about ten minutes time when your application is not in front, and depending on the particular context. This is where SMS and APNs schemes arise, as well as ActiveSync push notifications or analogous. And this particularly because continuously running an application can consume the user's battery.
Suggestions? Start reading the iOS developer documentation and Apple's requirements for the behavior of iOS applications. Probably a look at APNs, too. I'd also suggest visiting the Apple developer mailing lists (free) or the Apple iOS Developer Forums (access provided as part of the iOS Developer program membership), as well; those see far more developer-oriented traffic than do these forums.

IChat AIM got disconnected.

I was on my iChat aim today then it randomly said "iChat cannot connect with AIM user." I tried changing the port to 443 and nothing happened. This happens sometimes but I'm usually able to fix it but this time its not. All my other users are working but not this one. I tried putting the user that's disconnected into aim.com but it said "cannot log in due to the attempts to try logging in please try again later." I don't know what to do now. Please help.

I'm having this same problem. If i try to initiate an audio or video chat with a windows user it will fail, they will get an error message saying connection error or something along those lines. If a windows user tries to start an audio or video chat with me it will also fail and i would get this long error message...

Ichat/aim/adium problems

when i sign in to ichat, aim, and adium, i stay logged in for a little while, but then it signs me off and doesn't tell me that i've been kicked off. it looks like i'm online but none of my friends can see me. there is a lag like this for a couple of minutes and then it finally tells me that the connection timed out if i try typing another message. this is very frustrating. i've tried reinstalling everything and it doesn't help. i have also tried changing the aim port to 443. does anyone have any insight?

Try turning Off the SSL option in iChat (And in Adium if it has it).
iChat needs this manually reset if the Connection is lost to the SSL server at AIM (It also goes down more frequently than the regular server).

Does message replace iChat?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion this morning. I frequently used iChat for IM. Will Message still work with AIM and others not on Mac systems?

Messags replaced iChat.
Launch Messages then from the Messages menu bar click Messages > Preferences
Now click Help from the menu bar. Type AIM in the search field
Instructons there to setup profiles for AIM buddies.
