Spam question

I recently asked my ISP why I receive emails that are not addressed to my proper email address. He replied that these emails plant some sort of virus type file on my system that enables them to email me without the proper address. He told me the only way to avoid it was to purchase a 3rd party software program that prevent this and destroys any existing virus-type files on my system. Does anyone know of such a software program?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Whoever told you that had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. The messages you receive are certainly addressed to you. The reason you don’t see your email address in those messages is simply that it was put in the Bcc header (probably together with other email addresses) instead of in the To or Cc header. Addresses put in Bcc cannot be seen by any recipient -- actually, that’s precisely what that header is for...

  • Spamtrainer -f & X-Spam-***: Question

I switched to a Mac Pro Intel as my server a few months ago. I have been working out the kinks. I was moving from a Tiger Server install on a PowerMac G5. I had all the stuff for amavis, clamav, & spamassassin fixed on that install. I missed something since I have 2 .spamassassin directories and no symlink in /var/clamav/ or /var/amavis/. I have been running the nightly cron job as setup by Spamtrainer 1.2.7. I just updated to 1.5.7.
So since I have been running this I do have a bayes DB.
sudo su - clamav -c "sa-learn --dump magic"
    0.000 0 3 0 non-token data: bayes db version
    0.000 0 14767 0 non-token data: nspam
    0.000 0 1402 0 non-token data: nham
    0.000 0 181092 0 non-token data: ntokens
    0.000 0 1165964162 0 non-token data: oldest atime
    0.000 0 1170363924 0 non-token data: newest atime
    0.000 0 1170396013 0 non-token data: last journal sync atime
    0.000 0 1170396020 0 non-token data: last expiry atime
    0.000 0 2764800 0 non-token data: last expire atime delta
    0.000 0 12699 0 non-token data: last expire reduction count
First question is if I run spamtrainer -f will this delete the current DB?
If yes how do I combine the 2 directories before making the symlink?
What directory does spamtrainer -b backup /var/amavis/ or /var/clamav/?
    /var/amavis/.spamassassin root# ls -loa
    total 61896
    -rw------- 1 clamav clamav - 20983808 Feb 2 17:43 auto-whitelist

    -rw------- 1 clamav clamav - 5410816 Feb 2 05:30 bayes_toks
My final question goes to the X-Spam-*: headers.
They should be in every mail that is delivered right? I only see these headers in mail with subject * JUNK MAIL *.
Will this be fixed after the symlink is done so all mail has X-Spam-*: headers in them?

Thanx Alex was waiting for your post.
All appears well sudo su - clamav -c "sa-learn --dump magic"
    0.000 0 3 0 non-token data: bayes db version
    0.000 0 14789 0 non-token data: nspam

so that looks good. but I get this error now which i did not get before.
~ root# sudo su clamav -c "spamassassin --lint"
su: Can't start from current directory: Permission denied
su: Trying to start from "/var/clamav"
$satag_leveldeflt was set to -999 so I don't know why all messages did not get X-Spam-*: headers?

  • Mail spam question

    Hello,
I've been receiving some empty spam. it just says from: &nbsp and has no subject matter and no content. I recieve about 10 to 15 at a time and am unable to designate as undesirable on the serveur.
Any ideas on how to get rid of this stuff??
    Thank you

It is unwise to respond to spam in any fashion, especially returning to sender.
Empty spam is usually part of a campagin to determine valid email addresses.
When you return it to sender you inadvertantly confirm that your address is valid -- otherwise how could you have returned it.
Usually the return address is forged anyway, so you just end up dumping your spam on an innocent third party.

    Hi,
I guess there is 2 reasons for this
    1) client issue
    2) user lock entry issue
Login to the 000 client to import the support packs
and more over check is there any lock entry with User which u r using to import the support packs
if any lock entry is there delete that lock entry and login to the 000 client, import the addon using SAINT.
    Hope this helps!

  • SPAM Questions.

#1 Is it worth the trouble to send mail to spamdetector. notcaught@verizon. net ([email protected])?
#2 Is it better to forward the single message or many messages at once. I have opened Emails but never pictures or attachments
    Samples.
In outlook with POP 3 the mail is picked up and placed in my Junk E-mail folder.
#3 Why does the spam filer not catch these?
I go to the webmail message center and clear the junk on a regular basis. And leave messages on the server until I am home and can download them.
Back to # 2 Which is better? And #1 Is it worth my trouble? It seems like the more I report, the more I get that is not caught on the Verizon server's filter.
Multiple Email reported. Sent all at one time may include headers?
Single Email reports may not include header information?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Prisaz and I have been in direct communication, but here is an email I sent that might be of interest of the entire community
    Dear Mr. Prisaz,
I have received some feedback from our VZ Abuse team, our internal experts. I am hopeful that it will make you feel more comfortable with using Verizon’s email applications.
Verizon is very serious about successfully delivering legitimate email and blocking SPAM when and wherever possible.
Please forward the SPAM emails, including full-headers, in-line (not as an attachment)  to:
    [email protected]
Rejecting specific traffic from specific hosts based upon PTR record or lack thereof is not optimal on a large scale. Given that we accept and reject billions of connections monthly, we along with many other industry experts,  are in a unique position to see and know this. Research online will provide additional information to the customer should he wish to look into that.
It is a violation of RFC standards to rely upon either the PTR record of a client or its HELO/EHLO statement for rejecting the connection. Verizon abides by the standards.
Regrettably, the number of mail admins that do not run their mail servers in a proper or efficient way is staggering. If Verizon were to reject on a strict basis, we would have far more customers very angry about why their emails are not being received. Verizon believes it is more important than any other aspect of email delivery to ensure email is received that is desired. Our anti-spam efforts, infrastructure, and every other aspect of the mail system is built on this core value. No one wants spam,  but it's even a bigger deal to not successfully receive mail.
Verizon Online's block rate of spam is one of the best in the industry. According to the block-rates made available by MAAWG (http://maawg.org), Verizon Online estimates we are near the top of the industry in the percentage of blocked spam, and we block billions of messages monthly.
Again, thank you for your enthusiastic assistance and your business.

  • Advantages IMAP has over POP?

Hello everyone. I'm from the UK and have a Gmail account (not google mail, I had my account during beta) and I managed to enable IMAP by changing my language from English UK to English US. What advantages over POP do I have? I find it harder to delete emails. Especially spam as I have to delete from spam and then delete them again in the trash. Is there a better and faster way of doing this. Plus could my IPhone catch any viruses by accidently opening spam? I delete emails the fast was by swiping over them and I accidently open them but then I go out of the spam message as quickly as possible.

IMAP maintains the master copy of all messages on the server. You can either view and organize them online with a web client such as squirrelmail or gmail or sync your local clients to the server. The difference from POP3 is that the clients sync both ways with the server. So if you delete a message from one client it will be deleted from the server, and then from the other clients the next time they sync. Once synced there is a local copy on the client, so you can view it without a network connection. If you send a message or reply and you don't have a connection the client will wait for a connection to send. Similarly for deletes and moves.
One big advantage is that you can create folders on the server. The folder structure will also sync to the clients, so a folder added on one client will appear on the others. Moving an item from the inbox (or a folder) to another folder will be treated as a delete from inbox and add to the selected folder.
Given all of this, the iPhone client is not fully compliant. In particular, if you delete a message on the iPhone it will NOT be deleted from the server. It was in the first release, but I think this confused so many people (who thought they were just deleting a local copy) that they changed the behavior. You also cannot add or remove a folder on the iPhone. You must do it with a full client (like Outlook or Mac mail). Unlike a desktop client, the iPhone does not automatically update all folders on a sync; only Inbox, Sent and Trash. Other folders are updated only when you open them. I think this is intended as a feature; if I were to sync the 1 GB I have in all my folders it would take a week, so I am happy with it. I just wish the mail app had more options, so I could choose behaviors such as this.
Regarding your spam questions, there's no harm in leaving them in trash; there is a setting that will empty trash after a period of time you specify. Contrary to the FUD spread by antivirus companies you cannot "catch" a virus by opening an email. You must then execute something in the email to catch the virus, like click a link or run an attachment. And even then, there are NO viruses that can infect an iPhone at this time. The one vulnerability that the phone had has been fixed. Even it required opening a TIFF image in the email.
The last point about spam is that the overwhelming majority of spam messages are just trying to sell you something, not infect your computer.

  • Java/JSP Website Hosting

Is it ideal to go with a company that offers shared Java/JSP hosting or would it be necessary to opt for a dedicated server??? With that being said, is their a reliable company out their that is not to expensive for an individual not a business (i.e. not RackSpace)?

You should sit down and define your requirements in terms of resources and then investigate further. Shared/dedicated is not a good starting place IMO because one company's shared may be equal in terms of filling your requirements to another company's dedicated.
    * - in the line of disclosure I am a hosting provider of the services discussed here but I do not solict business by way of these forums.

  • Spam filtering solution for iPhone and a question.

I've read a lot of posts about spam filtering for the iPhone and have yet another solution and a question. I use SpamSieve and I am not affiliated with them in any way. The nice thing about SpamSieve is that if it is the first rule in your Mail.app rule set any mail that follows has already been filtered. All you need to do then is create another rule that redirects email to what ever mail account you choose. Since my ISP allows multiple accounts, I will simply create an iPhone@myISP account.
Now the question. Is it possible to write an applescript that will turn the redirect rule on or off so that I don't have to dig into the rules section of Mail to get this done?
    Thanks

  • I sent a question to Firefox and got two weird spam replies - weird ranting. And one semi-helpful reply.

Here are the two spam replies I received, from "adkaush":
Yeah go ahead and remove my account but remove your account too because your answers are not helping anyone either.
FF Team is biased to the mobile users and plan to chop-off the desktop segment. What's good about that Hitler approach?
I don't care if you wish to remove my account for speaking out, I won't be surprised at all. Because that's what FF is doing now, kicking people around. Switching over to Chrome if that's what you want me to do.
Never thought I'd hand over my browsing to Goog but that's what I have to do now because FF team doesn't care. Don't tell me that FF team didn't see this coming. They knew people will crap around. Go ahead, kick me in the nuts. Ban me or IP ban me, whatever makes you happy.
    And:
This is happening because FF team have made the browser .. better :)
Status bar is gone! Tens of my add-ons aren't working. I'm sure, FF team must be like, "Yayyyyyyyyyyy we frustrated the hell out of people!"
    Here's the semi-helpful tip I received, from "alan_r":
There is no sign of it in your installed plug-ins. It may be an idea to re-instal it.
    Thanks, Bill.

    Where did all this happen?
The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.
If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox ''Help'' menu and select ''Submit Feedback...'' or use [https://input.mozilla.org/feedback this link]. Your feedback gets collected at http://input.mozilla.org/, where a team of people read it and gather data about the most common issues.

  • I forgot my security question and when I click a reset to my email link the email doesn't show up not in my spam or junk folder anywhere, any help?

I want to make an in app purchase on a game but it asks for my security question (which I can't remember) I click on can't remember where it takes me to safari on Apple.com where I press send reset security question to my email I click it it says it has sent so I check my inbox and it's not there and it's not on my spam or junk mail. All help appreciated, thanks in advance!

Because Apple sends it to a Rescue Email address that you are supposed to setup or already have. In case of the latter you need to check the rescue email.

Some kernel updates (I386 on my case), and my first question is: "How do I update this? Is it safe to be the first thing to be done?" Is it only copy to the Run directory (usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\run)?
Also a component BC-FES-IGS has some updates, but I don't know what is this and how to update. (it says: Installation for SAP IGS integrated in SAP Kernel igsexe_16-10003071.sar)
All the rest (SAPK* files), seems to be normal patches that is possible to use spam to update them. Correct?

    Hi Pedro,
Some kernel updates (I386 on my case), and my first question is: "How do I update this? Is it safe to be the first thing to be done?" Is it only copy to the Run directory (usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\run)?
As SolMan is a dual stack machine, you can use JSPM to update the kernel. Another way is to extract the Kernel SAR files into the exe\run directory. It is a best practice to update the kernel before the support packages. Take a backup of the existing exe directories before you update the kernel and also pay good attention while downloading the kernel. you need to take care while choosing the correct version of the kernel (either 32 bit or 64 bit and ITANIUM or XEON). If you choose the wrong kernel, then ur SAP system will not come up.
Also a component BC-FES-IGS has some updates, but I don't know what is this and how to update. (it says: Installation for SAP IGS integrated in SAP Kernel igsexe_16-10003071.sar)
Extract the IGS SAR also along with teh kernel files.
All the rest (SAPK* files), seems to be normal patches that is possible to use spam to update them. Correct?
Yes!!! You may have to update the latest SPAM/SAINT (SAPKD700*) before updating the SP's.
How to use SPAM/SAINT? What is used in one time, and on others? Do they do the same?
Support Packs can be updated using SPAM and the add-on upgrades has to be done using SAINT.

  • Question re: spam mail

I receive 5-10 spam mails per day and, although they go into my junk mail folder, I don't like receiving them.  I had a yahoo email account and had to delete it b/c of all the spam mail.  I typically add the sender and domain to my block sender list, then delete the email.  Is there any way I can prevent this spam from coming in at all?  I was hoping there was a better filter on the verizon website.
    Any advice???
    Thanks

You can set your spam detector to delete messages rather than save them in the spam folder. If you have a legitimate message filtered by accident though, there won't be a way to recover it.
