Spamhaus DBL support?

I'm interested if the Ironport supports (or will in the future) querying the Spamhaus DBL: http://www.spamhaus.org/news.lasso?article=655
Unlike other DNS block lists, this one supports domain name queries only and does not support IP address queries at all.  They recommend using it to check URIs in the message content as well as headers.
Would be great to see this support!

In particular find in the FAQ the following statement:
You must not put 'dbl.spamhaus.org' into any email server 'DNSBL' or 'RBLs' feature, spam firewall or spam filter unless it specifically states that blocklists entered there are used for domain checking only. If you are unsure, ask your spam filter developer.
Five Months for the appearance of a completely off-the-wall response to, basically, a yes/no question....anyone want to place bets on something effectual actually appearing here?

  • Does Google Pubilic DNS block Spamhaus RDNSBL queries?

    Our ISP here in Northwest Arizona is CableONE.  We noticed late last year some problems with some of their DNS resolving servers and decided to cut over, as whole, to using Google's Public DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively).  We didn’t realize this at the time of the cutover (11/11/2010), but this had the effect of killing our ability to use Spamhaus for RDNSBL-based rejection of incoming spam.
    We specifically use zen.spamhaus.org and bl.spamcop.net for RDNSBL spam rejection (as set in Server Admin under “Mail > Settings > Relay > Use these junk mail rejection servers (real-time blacklist)”.  Both of these servers had been working well for years, but after the cutover to GoogleDNS we found that Zen wasn’t blocking any spam any more, and there was a corresponding tenfold jump in the amount of rejections triggered by SpamCop.  This makes sense since SpamCop was now taking up the slack for the other service.  We didn't realize this in November 2010, but only now as we retroactively searched the mail server logs from last year.
    This issue can be demonstrated using the shell commands below.  The bottom line is that through Google's two public DNS servers, the Spamhaus queries *never* show the host as listed, whereas on the four CableONE DNS resolvers they *always* show proper results.  There could also be timing issue having to do with how long it takes older RDNSBL queries to time out.  I wonder if anyone can confirm these results; if not we may be dealing with a local DNS cache poisoning in Google’s public DNS servers, but I can’t imagine that this problem has persisted for a whole five months!!  What I suspect is the case is that Google has a policy where RDNSBL is not supported (or properly handled) on their public DNS servers.
    Comments?  Thoughts?  …I’d be interested if anyone else has this problem.  It’s purely a DNS issue, not specific to OS X Server, but it would obviously affect all flavors of OS X Server, not just SL server 10.6.x.
    Here's a shell session illustrating the situation.  I’m testing using the address 186.136.114.186, which is an address currently blocked by SpamCop, and the XBL listing on Spamhaus (and also the SBL-XBL and ZEN composite lists as a result).  I apologize if this a host you’re responsible for, I’m just choosing this host as an example to test against.  You can contact SpamCop and Spamhaus to find out why you're being blacklisted; that is outside of what I'm concerned about.

    In digging further it seems this is a known issue.  It is not Google DNS that is banning RDNSBL queries to Spamhaus, but rather Spamhaus that does not want queries reaching it from Google's Public DNS servers.  For more info, see the following links:

    Okay.... so that explains *why* this is happening.  Now I need to figure out what to do about it.
    I’m a bit relucant to switch my mail server to running DNS queries through CableONE because, as I mentioned, we have at least one major client of ours who’s servers aren’t listing properly on CableONE’s DNS resolvers.  We cut our enterprise over to Google Public DNS for that very reason.
    Is there a way to direct *just* the RDNSBL queries to work via CableONE resolvers, while leaving the general resolver settings (at /etc/resolv.conf) alone?  In other words, is there any syntax in Postfix that lets you choose which DNS servers resolve RDNSBL queries (aka RBL queries) without forcing you to choose those resolvers for other mail handling functions?
    Any help and comments would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

  • Why doesn't customer support understand?

    I recently needed to reinstall windows xp.  I have saved everything I needed to reinstall all my software.  My photoshop CS2 is the only problem I've had.  Since it was an upgrade my installation pkge is looking for a previous version.  I have the serial number, original reciept, confirmation number, case number and all other materials needed including a challeng code given to me 2 years ago when I upgraded.  After 3 hours and being kicked from Customer Service to Tech support over and over with a hold time of 15 minutes in between each one I was finally fed up.
    Each person tried the same thing.  Ctrl/Shift/Dbl Click which does not work.  They agree my serial number is correct, they can see my purchase from the order number on my original reciept, but not one could give me a straight answer. They all kept asking the same questions over and over but none made sense.  Honestly I don't think there was a language issue either.  The last one actually said I should upgrade to CS4..... how could I upgrade that if I can't even upgrade to CS2 on my computer.  I have totally lost respect for the Adobe system of support.  I have 3 Adobe programs and I am waiting for the day I need support on those.
    If anyone has any suggestions for me I'd love to hear them.  They would not give me any help other than to say I must have a previous version loaded before I can load an upgrade.....NO kidding!  But even though I paid and they see I paid for an upgrade in the past....they cannot come to the conclusion that the previous version would no longer be loaded on my computer.....I've upgraded...the previous one is gone.  My only hope is to get ahold of a previous cracked version so I can run my paid program through with the previous installed..... that risks my computer getting malicious files on it...which is why I did the clean install in the first place......UGH!

    When it asks for a previous version, put your previous version CD into the CD drive. That should work.  You stated "I have saved everything I needed to reinstall all my software."  That would include the earlier (full) version of Photoshop.

    Been a customer for over 10 years. Been running a web hosting company also for over ten years.
    Verizon has blacklisted my company's mail server IP address. So, it says to visit this page to request delisting.

    I have done so at least 15+ times by now past few months. All I get is the same canned autoresponse, no live human. No repsonses to my emails.
    After investigation, Verizon Online Security has determined that e-mail from your IP address will not be allowed access to the Verizon Online e-mail domain due to one or more of the following reasons:
    Your IP has been blocked because of spam issues or because your ISP indicates that it is dynamically assigned
    There is no other method to contact the postmaster or any support department at Verizon to resolve this. Pathetic.
    I contacted VZ wireless Facebook page by messaging them there.
    This is what I said, copy/paste:

    I've been struggling to get my web hosting company's IP addresses delisted using your ISP whitelisting form. I've opened numerous tickets past few weeks trying to get help.

    Exactly. You do use authentication. Thats exactly the point. You wouldnt be able to send emails at all if authentiction wasnt turned on so that suggestion by spamhaus is already done. Second, the only port used by verizon email is 587, so the suggestion that you may have another port is out the window as well because if it was anything else, you wouldnt be able to send email either. So it is NONE of those issues. The spamhaus suggestions do not apply as if they were not that way in the first place you wouldnt be able to send any emails via Verizon and would not be having this symptom. The fact that you can send an email in the first place means that all the spamhaus suggestions have already been verified as working.
    Like I said earlier, this is a spamhaus issue at this point. Everything that spamhaus suggested you check has been verified as working on the verizon side.
    The only thing left to try on the verizon side is to get you a new IP and see if spamhaus likes it better.
    The suggestion that the only work around was to use the web interface is a vaild idea because emails sent via the web use a different IP address range than the one used at your house. getting a new IP may help. Otherwise, you will need to contact spamhaus directly

  • Spamhaus PBL

    I have determined that my Verizon IP address is on the Spamhaus PBL list.  Many of my outgoing emails (multiple accounts) are being blocked because they initiate from the "Verizon" listed IP address.  This is a Verizon IP issue.  I don't send SPAM or mass emails.  I have been on the phone with Verizon all day without any results.  No one at Verizon has a clue.  I talked to two outside consultants who were quick to pinpoint the problem but only Verizon can fix it by requesting the IP address be removed from list or give me a new IP address.  After 10 phone calls today, I was told that I would have to email my problem to the whitelist department but that this department could not be contacted by telephone by me or anyone else at Verizon and that it could take a week for them to respond.  No one did anything to help.  I work from home and this is a major problem.  Verizon technical support and customer service are non-existent.  I heard that I can log into my router and change the IP address myself.  Does anyone know how?  I'm sure the "community" knows more than Verizon!  And I'm sure cares more than Verizon! 

    My issue is not just with Verizon email.  It is with all my email addresses (verizon and others).  Problem due to my Verizon internet service/IP address showing up on a Spamhaus PBL list.  I'm getting blocked by some mail servers/recipients.  Only Verizon can fix - get it removed with Spamhaus or give me a new IP address.  This is urgent!  It would be nice to "talk" to someone at Verizon who understood the problem and who knew how to fix it.  I am told there is no one to "talk to".  I have to send all my requests online.  I sent online requests and got an automated response which told me nothing.  Verizon needs to remember that the company's future, profitability and employee jobs have a direct correlation to the customer satisfaction & retention.  Verizon needs to empower their people and equip their people to RESOLVE issues.  I have never used a forum or blog before but I have no where else to turn! 

  • SpamHaus XBL listing cleared, however O365 blocking citing SpamHaus

    We have a MailFlow Connector authorizing a HostGator (I know, I know) server to transmit form mail within the domain. For a time, it was listed on SpamHaus under XBL. That listing has been cleared, however it's 24 hours later and O365 is still rejected mail
    from that server citing SpamHaus.

    Is there a way to clear O365's cache of the XBL or to temporarily disable SpamHaus check and re-enable 24 or 48 hours later once Microsoft is seeing the all clear from SpamHaus?

    As per the description, I understand that the client host was bocked by Spamhaus.
    As far as I know, there is no way on the recipients' end (office 365) to clear this 'cache of the XBL'. Actually, it can take 24-48 hours before it's completely removed, so maybe you will need to wait for more time.
    Regarding "temporarily disable SpamHaus check and re-enable...", I would suggest you check in the forum of
    Office 365 Community which is dedicated for Office 365
    server/admin aspects. Current forum only focus on questions and feedback for Microsoft Office client.

    I found the topic in the forum and neither solution works for me.
    Are there any other ways around this?

    If you can open the files directly via the open file dialog box, then
    the problem most likely is a file association problem. If you cannot
    open the file directly, then you probably need to re-install. For the
    most part postscript files should not be opened in Photoshop.

    The problem you got into is a known problem after updating to Tiger. It is a small 4K file that gets trashed with the update. It is called the Adobe Unit Types. Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements need this file to function.
    One way to get it back is to reinstall Photoshop, the other is to add this file again.

    [hard disk] /Library/ScriptingAdditions. If you don't have a Scripting Additions folder, you create it.
    As you trashed Photoshop, you need to completely deinstall it to be able to reinstall it.

    Ok, one of the rules in troubleshooting is to remove all peripherals and see if anything changes.
    I had two 500 GB "My Book" drives (different releases) connected via FireWire, and one Seagate 1TB drive connected via USB 2.0. (I thought they might be taking a lot of power away from the main unit.)
    So after shutting down the iMac, removing the external hard drives, and attempting a reboot from the DVD I was able to succeed! The verify and permission check went as expected - nothing unusual.
    I then dug out my original 10.4 Tiger installation/boot/utility disks that came with my G5 iMac, and was able to boot them as well. With the Tiger install disk I was able to run the "Apple Hardware Test iMac Version 2.5.1", and it didn't test the DVD drive but did find something wrong with the Video memory! (It was apparent that something might be wrong here since the display wasn't clean but had a bunch of short verticle lines about 1/8" going up and down all over my display - it was bad enough that I could barely read the hardware test results.)
    So, while I may still have a Power Supply issue (I should be able to boot from the DVD with my external HD's connected) I now also know I may need to have the video ram looked at.

  • Cannot install windows 8.1 on imac 5k - apple support says "Correct, that machine can't install windows" Boot camp fail

    I have a brand new imac 5k, with 4ghz i7, 295x GPU, 3.1TB fusion drive.  Bought the machine so I could dual boot - I need windows for VR Dev work.
    I've spent the last week and a half on tech support calls with Apple Senior Tech agents, and Microsoft agents as well, and today have been told that indeed this machine cannot run windows 8.1.  Apparently Apple engineering knows about the issue, but says the problem is microsoft's.  Ugh.
    The latest iteration of the issue comes when installing 8.1 onto an external thunderbolt SSD (without even using boot camp) - I go through the EFI installer, convert the drive to GPT, format it as ntfs, but when I select the partition to install onto, the installer says it can't find the partition it just created.  Smuh? 
    I've also tried the install through boot camp.  This installation actually worked twice, but the install was unstable.  After booting back into osX, then returning to Windows, the windows install went corrupt and couldn't be repaired.  Subsequent attempts to install windows yielded a flurry of different errors, including "windows doesn't support GPT in this mode" or "the disk is locked, please unlock the disk" or "MBR must be converted to GPT" (where once I converted to GPT, the drive could no longer be found, despite the operation completing successfully.)
    At any rate, it's a huge mess.  I'd happily return the machine for a different config, but the company I bought it from will only swap it for a similar model -- so I've spent a pile on a machine that does not function as advertised; apple says "too bad, talk to Microsoft." Microsoft says "too bad, we've never seen this, this is an apple issue."
    Has anyone out there gotten windows up and running on an iMac5k with fusion drive?  If so, did you have to go through a crazy maze to make it work?

  • Unable to capture DV to FCE, apple support told me a PC is the way forward!

    I recently bought an apple imac with a view to editing DV footage taken previously.
    I had captured some of these tapes on to a PC before buying an imac. These files I was able to edit on FCE and imovie (once I had transferred them from the pc hard drive). HOWEVER although I could control my DV camera through imovie and FCE none of my old DV tapes could be captured to the imac. An error message states that the frame rate is incorrect.
    I have apple care protection and have spent ages trying to get support for this only to be told by apple support that FCE and imovie will not capture my old DV tapes! The support person told me that I should go back to a PC if I want to do the job properly!
    Unfortunately I have just spent thousands on this very nice looking imac (and FCE) that is apparently unable to do the most basic capturing. Does anybody have any ideas (other than going back to pc) for getting my DV footage captured?
    Needles to say I have found all this incredibly frustrating as a new apple user. Are these sorts of issues common to imacs?

    thanks for getting back to me,
    I shot tape previously (in 2000) on a sony mini DV camcorder set to SP. I have since bought a new sony mini DV camcorder (DCR-HC40 NTSC).
    With the new camera and a PC I was able to capture my 2000 tapes and edit them. I was also able to edit the earlier footage I had transffered from my PC hard drive to the i-mac on i-movie and FCE.
    Unfortunatley everytime I have tried to capture my old tapes directly onto the i-mac I have had the message "preview disabled" from FCE and the following from i-movie:
    "The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie can’t accept. Check your camera’s record mode (this is the setting that affects recording quality, which determines the total recording time on a tape). The mode must be set to “SP” or “LP.” If that doesn't help, try removing all the cables and batteries from the camera, wait a minute, replace them, and then reset the date, time, and record mode."
    I have spent weeks on the support site and found a thread that recommended re-installing quicktime etc but nothing has worked.
    I connect to the i-mac via firewire and am able to control the camera, capture my newly recorded miniDV's (so it is not a problem with the proprietary software application etc) but nothing seems to work for my old tapes.
    Apple support told me that apple doesn't do older miniDV's and that a pc would be the only way I could capture my tapes. I couldn't believe it! Unfortuatley I no longer have access to my old pc.
    Any ideas? Is there any other way of getting DV onto my i-mac?
