Spanish Accented Characters creating problems - missing files, etc

I am still working w/ iTunes 7.1.1.5 as I see no need to replace it for a different version. Throughout the history of this program I have noticed that it has trouble dealing with accent marks and characters that differ from that of the english alphabet. Can somebody help me figure out a work around?
Out of all the searches and finds I made regarding this subject, I did not see anyone jumping in to help, I refuse to sit back and not look into this further!
I would rather not have to turn an "í" into an "i" for iTunes to see my music, but *I also need to know how to get back all of the music that I know I lost due to this problem*, and also all the music that I don't know that could have been lost because of accent marks.
Does the latest version of iTunes fix the problem? When did they address it?
We need help!

I really don't think the problem has much, if anything to do with iTunes, as I've had absolutely no problems with any of my files either on my Windows XP machine or on any of my Macs. Even Icelandic characters are handled perfectly well in all cases.
What might have much more to do with the problem is the file format of your hard drive(s). If you're using something ancient such as FAT32, then expect problems such as this, and plan accordingly by using simple naming of your files. If you're using NTFS, things should be OK.

  • Mail with French / Spanish accented characters appear as Question marks

    Hi
    I am facing issues in mails that have French / Spanish accented characters in mail subject.Accented characters appear as Question marks (?) when received in the inbox.Mail subject is read from properties file.
    Please let me know the following
    - Should I have the entries in properties file in Unicode ? For example French accent character is represented as á
    - Should I replace msg.setSubject(subject); to msg.setSubject(subject,"UTF-8");
    Please suggest.
    Below is code snippet :
         Session session = getSession();
                   // create a message
                   Message msg = new MimeMessage(session);
                   // set the from and to address
                   InternetAddress addressFrom = new InternetAddress(from);
                   InternetAddress[] addressTo = new InternetAddress[recipients.length];
                   for (int i = 0; i < recipients.length; i++)
                        addressTo[i] = new InternetAddress(recipients);
                   msg.setFrom(addressFrom);
                   msg.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO, addressTo);
                   msg.setSentDate(new Date());
    *               msg.setSubject(subject);*
                   MimeMultipart mp = new MimeMultipart("related");

    String subject = "\u00C 9tat de l'inscription en ligne";You need 4 hex digits after \u. You only included 3.
    mailSubject = new String(subject.getBytes(), "UTF-8");
    message.setSubject(MimeUtility.encodeText(mailSubject,"UTF-8", "B"), "UTF-8");Remove the above two lines. You're trying to make
    this much too hard. All you need is:
    message.setSubject(subject, "utf-8");
    Should I use ISO8859_1 as Charset or UTF-8 ?I think the characters you're included are
    representable in iso-8859-1 so you can use
    that.
    I am using Outlook express as my mail client. Do we have to decode it ?No.

  • Spanish accent characters are not displayed proper in excel file

    Hi
    I have written a program which displays one report file (.xls file ) on the browser.
    This report file is in spanish language and contains few accent characters like
    (" "). These characters are not displyed properly in that excel file which is opened in the browser. I have used utf-8 encoding method. I tried with some other encoding methods available. But still this problem continues.
    Kindly provide me help as soon as possible.
    Thanks and
    Regards,
    Deval

    File is generated through a java bean at runtime and it is not stored pgysically.
    If I copy these characters from somewhere to new xls file then it will be displayed properly.
    Sample code which is used for setting headers is as below:
         protected void setContentType (
              HttpServletResponse     p_response
         ,     InstanceData          p_instancedata
              p_response.setHeader ("Cache-Control", "no-cache");
              p_response.setHeader ("Cache-Control", "max-age=0");
              p_response.setHeader (
                   "Content-Disposition", "inline; filename="
              +      p_instancedata.userId
              +      "_"
              +      System.currentTimeMillis ()
              +     ".csv"
              System.out.println("Content generator = ");
              p_response.setHeader("charset","utf-8");
              p_response.setContentType (EXCEL_CONTENT_TYPE);
    For generating this xls file, format of data is XML. Means both request and response data will be in XML format.
    Hope this information help in suggesting any solution for this problem.

  • Problem with Spanish accented characters in some sites (e.g. "é" shows as "eacute")

    Spanish accented vocals are not being shown correctly at some pages of a site that I use often (https-based online banking). Note that not all pages at that site show this problem.
    On the problematic pages, all accented vocals are shown as a combination of the "&" character plus such vocal (unaccented) plus the "acute" string.
    For example:
    "Información" shows up as "Informaci&oacuten" ---> note that "ó" was replaced by "&oacute"
    "Débitos" shows up as "D&eacutebitos" ---> note that "é" was replaced by "&eacute"
    I tried many Unicode & Western character encoding options, including UTF-8 which is my default option, with no improvements (actually, using any encoding option different from UTF-8 breaks those pages that previously worked fine at that site).
    Note that this happened even before I installed the DownThemAll! extension.
    Internet Explorer does not present this problem.
    Thanks for your support.

  • Post-backup problems: missing files

    Hi guys!
    I just reinstalled OSX (but saved everything to the "Previous System" on my Mac HD), but many of my GB projects are missing files - where and how can I get them back?
    Thanks!
    Alec

    Yosemite is very buggy.. network side and time machine are both in the poor category. Or the most and worst bugs.
    Did you upgrade install Yosemite?
    Did you start a fresh TM backup after you installed.
    When you say it is not backing up all the files what size is the whole sparsebundle.. check it by mounting in finder??
    If it is in fact larger than 350GB it should be backing up everything.. but has display issues.. this is what most users are finding.. TM is in fact backing up but it refuses to display the backups.
    Someone recently posted the method of getting Yosemite to display backups.
    Find files in Yosemite.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6681850?searchText=time%20machine%20yosemit e#27139370
    While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
    Also note.. yosemite is dog slow.. over wireless.. the dog is overweight dachshund, dragging its belly over the ground. You need to be patient. Like many hours patient.
    If all this gets you nowhere.. a strong possibility with Yosemite.
    Let me suggest you either do a new TM backup to an external drive.. if you are currently using a TC. You haven't given a target.. but if you already use an External drive.. start a new one.. or wipe and start fresh with the old drive..
    OR
    Buy a third party reliable backup.. mostly all of them are.. I use Carbon Copy Cloner and suits very well.. it is fairly cheap at $40 and can be used on all the computers in your household.. it can create bootable clones.. once you have used one.. you will see it has huge advantages over the TM method.
    But I do still use both.. CCC for occasional bootable clones and TM to TC.. but then.. I don't use Yosemite. As it is still not up to standard. and when installed onto my network caused utter and complete chaos.

  • Itunes update problem - missing file?

    I've been trying to install the iTunes version 9.2 update, it doesn't get very far into it before i receive this message:
    The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
    Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Bonjour64.msi' in the box below.
    Use source: yadayadayada.. (and gives me the option to browse for another source where the stated file is)
    I've looked through every file imaginable (yes, the recycling bin too) and can't seem to find it anywhere! there's another file it says it's missing 'appleapplicationsupport.msi' as far as i'm concerned, i haven't deleted any files related to Apple. I've tried uninstalling the program but it says that it can't because those files are missing, i tried redownloading it from the Apple website - same problem.
    Does anyone know how to fix this problem/have any suggestions? thanks.

    I was having this problem for a while and searched through a number of forums for the answer on how to locate .msi files that I must have accidentally deleted. I needed the .msi files because while attempting to uninstall the Apple Software Update another Apple related program from my Add or Remove Programs list I was getting an error similar to:
    "The feature you are trying to use in on a network resource that is unavailable.
    Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the intallation package 'AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi' in the box below."
    I followed these steps in order to locate the .msi and successfully uninstall:
    1. Download the correct version of iTunesSetup.exe. This is the same version that you are attempting to delete on your computer. For me it was iTunes 9.1.1. (It is key that you download the same version you are attempting to remove!)
    2. Install WinRAR: http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=winrar&tag=srch&searchtype=downl oads&filterName=platform%3DWindows,Webware&filter=platform%3DWindows,Webware
    3. Run WinRAR and point it at the iTunesSetup.exe you downloaded in step 1. Extract the .exe to a folder.
    4. Go to Add or Remove Programs and attempt to uninstall the broken Apple software.
    5. When the uninstaller asks for the .msi, point it to the .msi file in the folder you extracted to in step 3.
    Voilà! You should be able to successfully uninstall all your broken Apple applications this way, including QuickTime.

  • Aperture and Flickr Export Problems - Missing Files

    I have a MacPro, Aperture 3, and Flickr Pro account. I was planning on using Flickr as an online storage/back-up option for lower-res files. However, whenever I try to upload a project to Flickr files always seem to drop off.
    For example, if I export a project with 446 files in it, when it gets to Flickr it'll say I only have 403 images. Likewise if I try a smaller project (e.g., 426 -> 404).
    Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what is the cause of this problem?
    Also, any way to remove that 500 upload limit per project to Flickr? Flickr itself does not limit the number of photos you can store in a set.
    Thanks!

    Maybe it's related to this bug?

  • Accented character encoding in JNLP files

    Hi everyone:
    Maybe I am missing something trivial, but I am having trouble encoding French accented characters in my JNLP files. For example, I tried to encode the name "Qu&eacute;bec" as follows:
    - Qu&eacute;bec: the file is not parsed completely and the application-desc tag appears to be missing. I know that this problem has already been reported by German and Swedish fellows.
    - Qu&eacute;bec: the file is parsed correctly but the &eacute; tag is not converted to "&eacute;."
    - Qu&#233;bec: the &#233; tag is not converted either.
    - Qu\u00d9bec: no conversion...
    - Qu\00d9;bec: still no conversion...
    How should I encode my accented characters so that they appear correctly in Java Web Start presentation windows?
    Thanks in advance for any help...
    Jean-Fran&ccedil;ois Morin

    Rather than trying some kind of escape sequence, how about just storing the file as whatever "native" codepage your system likes and then converting it to UTF-8 with the native2ascii utility for deployment (not ideal, but it may work):
    As mentioned here:
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/docs/developersguide.html#dev
    Which links to here:
    http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/docs/tooldocs/win32/native2ascii.html
    (the document appears to be identical for the various JDK releases--if you want the 1.3 version, just change 1.1 to 1.3 in the URL above).
    I don't know if this is simpler on not. HTH!

  • Migrating from MySQL to Oracle 11gR2 containing accented characters

    Hello Gurus,
    I am going to migrate a MySQL database that contains accented characters. The collation of the tables holding these data is utf8_unicode_ci.
    I used SQLDeveloper to generate data migration scripts. After a test migration run, the web pages displays "?" instead of the accented character.
    I am currently tracing where the problem is.
    From what I have read, mysqldump uses utf8 as the default character set, so I assume the accented characters in <tablename>.txt files are in tact.
    Could the problem be on sqlldr? Has anyone come across this problem?
    I really would appreciate any help.

  • Problem w/ combination of non-Western and accented characters in file names

    *Description of problem*
    - iTunes U .m4v files preview and play perfectly from iTunes U server, but once downloaded locally on a Mac (via Get Tracks or Subscribe), they no longer play in iTunes software, or stand-alone in QuickTime player or Pro.
    - If you drag these files out of iTunes, they appear to not copy (actually, they do copy but the files are made invisible).
    *What we know:*
    - problem only on macs (same behavior on OS X 4.x and OS X.5.4)
    - files sync and play fine on iPod Classic 80gb
    - files will not sync to iPhone 1st gen.
    - same behavior on both iTunes 7 and 8
    - same behavior on QuickTime 7.5.0 and 7.5.5
    - not happening on any Windows machines
    - appears to be caused by the file name (particularly the combination of non-Western, 2-byte characters (Japanese, Chinese) plus accented roman letters (e.g. 大/dà/big; large).
    Either of these alone (not combined) in the title work fine.
    - if file is renamed with no character or accented letter or given a name at least 26 characters in length, the file suddenly will play (the files can be renamed and fixed this way either in the iTunes software or at the file level itself, within Music/iTunes/Movies/, and also at the Upload/Manage interface of iTunes U).

    Yep.
    "A Better Finder Rename" is great for batch file renaming.

  • BIG PROBLEM: CSS files not loading because of international characters in file name

    I have Muse Beta 7 in Spanish.
    The program creates a css file called master_a-página-maestra.css in css folder. It is referenced in the resulting HTML code here:
    <!-- CSS -->
      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/site_global.css?3951792836"/>
      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/master_a-p%c3%a1gina-maestra.css?fileVersionPlaceholder"/>
      <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/index.css?3948175564"/>
    When you work locally in your Windows formatted har drive, everything looks fine, but when you upload your files to a server, everything is screwed up. The server doesn't recognizes the URL and returns an error page, resulting in style errors in the entire site.
    This can also happens with html files if the title of the page contains international characters or with images if the image file name in your Hard Drive contains international characters.
    I already pointed out long time ago Muse was generating file names with international characters like á, ñ, etc but nobody cared about it. Too bad. I had to activate file name customization but I think that Muse should replace automatically this characters in the same way that it replaces other conflictive characters like commas or ampersands.
    This is not a fault of the FTP client. Accented characters are not web safe regardless of the FTP client you are using. It is a server side issue. Some servers support it some others don't. I don't mind if it works in Adobe Catalyst server because the final website is going to be in another server and maybe next year when paid hosting is ended the client may move it to another server.
    It makes more sense to replace accented characters in file names by their not accented equivalents ('a' instead of 'á', 'N' instead of 'Ñ', etc) and avoid all this problem.

    Zak, It is funny you mention it, because the site I am talking about is hosted in 1and1. try this: http://www.artofwalls.com/rosannawalls/biografía.html
    As you can see, the offending "í" in the file name causes 1and1 server to throw a "page not found" error. And this has happened with many other servers I have tried since.
    Muse boast of generating code fully compatible with all major web browsers but by using international characters in file names it ggenerates code suitable only for very few web servers. International characters have been always a no-no for internet URLs. Internet was designed by people who didn't care about ascii codes beyond 127 so using international characters in html file names is just call for problems.
    "to work with your hosting provider to determine how to enable Unicode encoded (UTF-8) file names and HTML files on their servers" is not a viable solution most of the time unless you are a Very Important Client of your host provider. If not, making changes means money for them and if you are the only one who complains, they are going to just tell you to not use international characters in your names.

  • Having problems creating a zip file with Japanese language character names

    I have a bunch of files with names in Japanese characters (also Chinese, Korean, Spanish etc, but this will do for an example). The encoding is Unicode.
    I wish to be able to put them in a zip file, then extract them again using any old zip tool (WinZip,PKZip,7-Zip etc)
    Trouble is, every time I do it, the files inside the zipfile end up with garbage character names. The contents of the files are fine, though.
    I'm aware that there used to be a bug in the java.util.zip.* classes regarding character encodings (http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;jsessionid=5bd4fe01ad8a7b4ec89afef5005da?bug_id=4244499) but as far as I can see it's supposed to have been fixed I have also tried the ZipOutputStream class from apache which allows you to set the encoding manually - no luck there either (just many different varieties of garbage characters)
    Test code below. What am I missing here?
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.FileOutputStream;
    import java.io.FileReader;
    import java.io.IOException;
    public class ZipTest {
    static String uniqueFileName = "&#35199;&#12288;&#32020;.txt";
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    standardZip();
    apacheZip();
    } catch (IOException fe) {
    System.out.println("problem in file - exception " + fe.getMessage());
    public static void apacheZip() throws IOException {
    String encoding = "";
    File inputFile = new File(uniqueFileName);
    FileReader reader = new FileReader(inputFile);
    encoding = reader.getEncoding();
    System.out.println("Using Apache - Encoding = " + encoding);
    File zipFile = new File("apacheZip.zip");
    org.apache.tools.zip.ZipOutputStream zipOutputStream = new org.apache.tools.zip.ZipOutputStream(
    zipFile);
    zipOutputStream.setEncoding(encoding);
    org.apache.tools.zip.ZipEntry zipEntry = new org.apache.tools.zip.ZipEntry(uniqueFileName);
    zipEntry.setSize(inputFile.length());
    zipEntry.setTime(inputFile.lastModified());
    zipOutputStream.putNextEntry(zipEntry);
    int c = 0;
    while (c >= 0) {
    c = reader.read();
    if (c >= 0) {
    zipOutputStream.write(c);
    zipOutputStream.closeEntry();
    zipOutputStream.finish();
    public static void standardZip() throws IOException {
    String encoding = "";
    File inputFile = new File(uniqueFileName);
    FileReader reader = new FileReader(inputFile);
    encoding = reader.getEncoding();
    System.out.println("Using Java IO - Encoding = " + encoding);
    File zipFile = new File("standardZip.zip");
    FileOutputStream zipOut = new FileOutputStream(zipFile);
    java.util.zip.ZipOutputStream zipOutputStream = new java.util.zip.ZipOutputStream(zipOut);
    java.util.zip.ZipEntry zipEntry = new java.util.zip.ZipEntry(uniqueFileName);
    zipEntry.setSize(inputFile.length());
    zipEntry.setTime(inputFile.lastModified());
    zipOutputStream.putNextEntry(zipEntry);
    int c = 0;
    while (c >= 0) {
    c = reader.read();
    if (c >= 0) {
    zipOutputStream.write(c);

The contents of the files are fine, though.This is becuase zip tool doesn't support unicode for zip entries. For example WinZip prior to 11.2 does not support Unicode characters in filenames. You need to look for the simillar information for other tools. You can find more on tools on their website.

  • How do I create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user

    This is why I think I need to.
    My computer got hit by lightening, and I may have created a new user account through netinfo rather than system preferences /accounts/+user. Mail used to open twice, but no longer. Now, Safari askes me for my keychain password twice, Spotlight can't find a folder on the computer when the search is restricted to folder and computer, though the folder is there and easyfind finds it, and when System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy has the hard drive icon added, then deleted, Spotlight still does not find anything. (Yes, everything is backed up, on CD, DVD, and online.) Microsoft Tec Support says
    "Here is a summary of the key points of the case for your records.
    When you contacted us on August 8, you had requested assistance with Microsoft Office 2004, as your installation of the updates was unable to find the correct version of the software to update. After creating a New MAC User, we identified the issue to be with a corrupt MAC User account, and not a Microsoft issue. "
    I believe Microsoft. So, creating a new user was easy.
    But copying files uses up too much hard drive (movies, music), and may miss keychains, preferences, mail, address book, and documents. Since Spotlight no longer works, who knows what is happening. (Yes, I've repaired persmissions, and disk repair. No change). I'm using up my hard drive trying to move files to the new user. If I share files, or put them into a public folder, then delete the old user, will I still have the old user's files in the new user's account? It is not clear to me what I should be trying to do in order to create a new user, move my old files etc over, and delete old user. Thanks.
    My responses will be slow, because I have to drive to town to use the internet. I've ordered a new airport which may take care of that problem. SO be patient.

    Hey -
    I need to do the EXACT same thing, but have no idea how. Has anyone out there done this?
    My situation is a tad different..this is a new Mac (and I'm a brand new Mac user). Tons of querks occur under my original account (videos won't run, Safari won't support certain plug-ins). I spent 6 hours on the phone w/ 4 different Apple Reps and nobody could fix it. A rep finally looked at my MacBook Pro in person today. He created a new account just to see if that would work and under that new account, everything works perfectly fine (no querks, can view video). He tried switching a million settings in my original account to no avail.
    He said to create a new account (as he did) and move my files over to the new account and then go back to the original and delete it. How do you do this?! I can't figure it out! I've got a new account created, but of course it just has the default folders in it w/ the little red icons next to them! Thanks in advance!

  • Missing files from /etc/certificates

    Hi, I have a certificate in my keychain for which I miss the .cert.pem, chain.pem, concat.pem and key.pem files in /etc/certificates.
    This results in a problem in server.app as I can't configure all my web-sites correctly and server.app won't write out the correct config files.
    Any idea how I can create the four files?

    So, I solve this issue and one more. I really can't believe nor understand why Apple is unable to create a server.app that can handle the simpelst things. What trainees are working on it?
    You need two fixes:
    1. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4539 (OS X Server: Saving a certificate identity to the system keychain does not work with Server services)
    The importan part is, that you need (!!) to reboot your machine. Only than the files are generated. I don't understand what's so hard to generate them right when adding the certificate but that's an other story.
    If you than try to use your now finally available certificate, you are hit by this problem:
    2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4266473?start=0&tstart=0 (Strange issue with Dovecot (err 89))
    And yes, that's because server.app comments out the SSL stuff in the dovecot config. Which of course makes a lot of sense if you want to use SSL. The bad sideeffect is, that dovecot won't startup with this wrong config.
    Enough hours lost by this Apple botch...
