Spanish, czech, non-english keyboard problem

Hi,
I need to type in Spanish and Czech. I have the system preference "International Settings" set with my 3 languages (US English, Czech, Czech Querty, Spanish).
Problem: I open MS Word. I define the language in the MS word doc as Czech or Spanish. Then I go the to language menu bar up on the top right and choose the right language. This works fine for inputting until I use "Tab" to move to a new field in the table and all of a sudden Mac OS X 10.4.10 has changed back to US. very very very annoying! Can anyone help?? This is a huge problem for me. Thanks. Im on macbook pro, intel.

Ernesto, I think you'll find that Command-option-6 will give you the \ that you want. For future reference, it's fairly easy to find what you need by using the Keyboard Viewer. How do you see that? The simplest way is to go to System Preferences > International > Input Menu tab. There, put a check mark into "Keyboard Viewer" and also into "Show input menu in menu bar" at the bottom of the pane. Now also put a check mark into "Spanish" in the scrollable list in the center.
At this point you should see a Spanish flag in your menu bar, no matter what application you're using. When you can't find a character you need to type, simply go to the flag, click and select Keyboard Viewer. By playing around with the shift, option, command and control keys (alone and in combination) you should be able to find what you need.
Good luck!

• History back on non-english keyboards

It appears that all non-english keyboards (meaning keyboards that does not have the [ and ] characters as a "singlepress-key"), can't use the history back and forward feature anymore. You need to use the mouse right-click feature or use the buttons in the menu. I'm using a Wacom Tablet and have my buttons are configured to history back and forward when Safari is an active window. I've tried to switch to US keyboard and make the shortcut in the Wacom software, but after I go back to my native language - Danish - it doesnt work. After Apple changed the option from backspace to command + [ and ], I cannot use the history anymore unless I have to use the mouse.
Can anyone help?

Hi Jim,
That shouldn't be a problem at all, if you buy it in the US, the software will be in English, but should install just fine on her PC.
I'm sure someone will give their input, some people here have bought players from other regions.

• Non-english keyboard layouts work in some programs, not others

In some programs, I can set a non-English keyboard layout and have the appropriate behavior when it comes to diacritics - in, say, the brazilian layout, hitting { then a will give me a á, and so on. It works perfectly fine in Firefox and xchat, for instance. But in other programs, opera and openoffice to name two I've tried, this fails. I either get a garbage character when I hit the first diacritic key or I just get the diacritic by itself and then the accentless vowel: ´a.
Completely non-English characters still work fine; I can get ç in the Brazilian layout and ñ in Latin American and the Georgian one works fine too, since Georgian doesn't have diacritics I presume. It's just diacritics that don't work.
I first noticed this problem after I installed SCIM, so I assume it has something to do with the SCIM installation, but I don't know what I did in the process of installing it that would've messed things up.

• Command-~ - not possible on non-english keyboard

Searched the forum and could only find this topic in the archives. It's a problem that comes up once in a while.
I love to point out that the shortcut Command-~ (and command-1,2,3,...) is still hard coded in Photoshop.
As a user on a non-english keyboard it's impossible to use the Command-~ shortcut. On Mac it's not even listed, on windows, it's listed but it can only be selected by pressing the shift key; so the shortcut doesn't work.
Hopefully Adobe will add the possibility to change this shortcut once and for all.

The no-mouse shortcut in CS4 is Cmd Option 2
The Channel shortcuts have been re-numbered with the Composite now being "2" and the next one (R, C, or Lightness depending on image mode) being "3". And so forth.
Cmd Option, plus the appropriate number, serves to select Highlights in the specified Channel.
Cmd Option Shift, plus the appropriate number, lets you add to the selection Channel by Channel.

• Spanish support using English Keyboard

Hi
We have a web based chat applicaiton where in we have an end user chatting with a helpdesk agent. At the agent side, he needs to chat with the end user in Spanish. But the agent has an English Keyboard. The constraints in this scenario are
1. The agent needs to chat with various end users (English/Spanish/French) at the same time. Every time he cannot change the language settings available at the OS level and change the keyboard settings to chat with various users.
2. The agent might not know the windows based codes for the letters in spanish accent. so he cannot directly key in the codes also. Moreover, this methodology will reduce the efficiency of the agent
We need some programmatic way of doing this in the applet to switch to other languages using ENGLISH keyboard. Some mapping is required. Any ideas, what technology/utility to use?
Thanks

I am not sure I understand constraint number 1: are you saying that an agent who is able to remember the key placement of a Spanish and a French keyboard while using an English keyboard is unable to use a simple hot key for switching input languages?
I am not saying it might not be worthwhile to do what you suggest, just puzzled that it is viewed as that much of a problem (compared to keeping Spanish vs. French vs. English keyboard layouts straight - I am having enough trouble remembering the Danish keyboard layout while using an English keyboard :-))

• Macbook bought in France with a international english keyboard problem

Hi,
My friend bought a macbook for france apple online store, he choosed a international english keyboard layout, but when he got it, he found that the keyboard is neither english laybout nor french layout, because there is not any configurations that matches his physical keyboard buttons.
The A - Z buttons is as the US keyboard, but the ;'~`[](){}/?! etc. are not correct, that means when u choose the US layout from the system preference->international, the A - Z work, but the ;'~`[](){}/?! are not at where u see them, when u choose FR layout, A - Z are not correct, british english doesn't work, too.
I have tried all the english countries and french countries, but no one works with 100% of the buttons.
Can Apple give me a solution to the problem? or if the macbook that he got is not well assembled?

Yes… I would at a minimum contact Apple sales or AppleCare regarding this. You have two options though. You can ask for a new one, given they can't simply swap out a keybaord you need to exchange the whole thing.
Otherwise, you can use it as a bargaining chip and say ask for a free external International English keyboard and a discount on your next Apple Store purchase… for instance.
Regardless, be polite yet firm with them as you did not get what you ordered.

• Some applications don't put accents with non-english keyboard layouts

I'm using a Portuguese keyboard with three different macs running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.8/9. Some applications (like Motion 2 and Swift Publishing 2) don't allow writing some accented characters, like (è) or (ê), that are accessed by Shift+normal key, but they do display correctly other accented letters, for instance (é), witch are accessed directly without the Shift key. This happens only in some applications and with a european keyboard layout (I tried it also with the spanish and french keyboards layouts), but not with other applications (it works all right with Word or iPhoto) and the english keyboards.
Any sugestion as how to solve this? If I create the text in some other application and paste it in Motion it works! But it's a drag.

• Screen locked with non-English keyboard layout selected

Hello,
I use two keyboard character sets for keyboard. The switch between them is Command-Space.
I also have password requirement for waking up or going from screen saver.
Now if screensaver starts with non-English layout selected, I'm not able to login:
password is not accepted because keyboard layout is not English and switching
to English layout does not work in unlocking window.
Is there any way to change layout while in the unlock window?
Thanks

Yes you are right, this is not a bug, it's just bad user interface. Just imagine the following scenario...
Writing a paper, switching to Greek to enter a couple of characters and leaving the mac idle for 5 mins.
The lock screen comes up asking for a password, unfortunately the user didn't change the language
before the mac was left idle and there is no option to change the language in the lock screen.
User has to hard reset to access the mac and let's hope that the user was saving his paper frequenlty.
So from a coding point of view this is not a bug, but from a user interface design it is a huge flaw

• Non-English fonts problems.

Hello guys,
I have a problem with non-English (well Cyrillic) font. I faced this problem 3 days ago when was working in iDVD trying to type text there. The problem is if I type in Russian with chosen font it does no appear as its english counterpart. I have tried many of them but it seems all of them (except may be two or three) work same (wrong) way. I have also checked them in other programms and got the same result. I have even checked this in Photoshop CS2 but... guess.. the same!
I have read lot's of topics but did not find a suitable solution for me although I used some of tips while working on the problem. For example I checked everything in System Preferences and Fonts folders. Everything is ticked/unticked there as appropriate.
Hope you'll give me a solution.
Thanks a lot!

Hello Tom,
thank you for your reply and for dealing with my problem. I am sorry for not being understandable. It may be because English is not my first language. I'll try to explain it in a different way. I was working on iDVD project and tried different fonts. As I was doing the project in both languages (English and Russian) because I wanted them to look the same. For English version I took Monotype Coursiva font (hope I spell right) as it was suitable to the whole theme of the project. When I typed with the same font in Russian it did not look like its English version but still readable (it is not the case of encoding problems when a text you have typed looks as the set of strange symbols). Then I tried Lucida Handwriting and oher having the same result. I have tried CY fonts as well but it was difference in appearence between letters and digits (I typed chapter names like this January 2007 and so on). Digits appeared different to russian letters, actually they were similar to English version.
I switched to Mac a year ago from Windows and absolutely love it. In Windows I mostly used Word and Power Point to work with text and did not have such problems (hope windows users are not reading this now).
I think it is related to Apple fonts because I noticed that all the applications share the same Font Book. I have tried different applications on my Mac in order to track the problem down and even Microsoft Office's Word for Mac which I use sometime was not able to do the job I requested. In other words I have same problem. May be my Font Book is not full? May be I need to update or upgrade it?
Thanks.
P.S. It's possible that my explanation is a bit complicated and you still cannot understand what the problem is. If so, would it be a good idea to send you some screenshots to be able to show you what I mean?
If answer is "yes" will you give me your e-mail, please?

• [LR2 - SOLUTION] Using Lightroom in englsih with a non-english keyboard layout

Hi,

Many of us, non native english speaking LR users, are using LT in
english on a system having a non-US keyboard layout. The conseqeunce of
this is that we can't reach a lot of keyboard shortcuts because LR
doesn't offer any interface for configuring them.

However, there's a workaround. I'll explain here what I did for the
french language but you can apply this to your own language.

For the non english languages, the keyboard shortcuts are defined in
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
2\Resources\
\TranslatedStrings.txt. If you are using LR in
english, this file is not used and there's no similar file in C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\en.

But you can create one containing only the shortcuts that you need.

I have created a new TranslatedStrings.txt file containing only the
keyboard shortcuts defined for the french version. I did this by copying
only the lines containing the following sequences:

....Key=...
....KeyShifted=...
...AgPanel/LeftPanelShortcut...
...AgPanel/RightPanelShortcut...
...MenuShortcut/DecreaseRating=
...MenuShortcut/IncreaseRating=

(french users can find this file here:
http://www.mainsoft.fr/Files/LR/TranslatedStrings.txt .

Copy this file to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
2\Resources\en" and relaunch Lightroom.

Now you have the same keyboard shortcuts as when using LR in french.
Interestingly enough, if you hit ctrl + < , the LR keyboard shortcut
panel is displayed and it shows your new shortcuts.

Again, you can do the same for your own language by copying the
specified strings from the relevant folder.

Hope this helps.

--
Patrick Philippot
MainSoft Consulting Services
www.mainsoft.fr

• Spanish characters in English keyboard?

Hi all,
I have both British and Spanish language inputs from System Preferences so I can switch between them.
This constrains me to use the character palette. when typing Spanish.
Does anyone know the keystrokes for accented vowels in Spanish, using English keyboard?
The characters are: á, é, í, ó, ú, ü and ñ
Thanks in advance
Dee

It is very easy to learn and remember the accents on the Macintosh keyboard, unlike in Windows which are done as ALT- 000, where 000 is some forgetable number.
You don't have to learn each specific instance, just the associated vowel which is most commonly used with it. The set of pre-keys works with the other vowels as well.
So for example the umlaut ¨is most commonly seen on the German ü so just remember the associated cmd u followed by whatever vowel after to get:
option u = ä, ë, ï, ö, ü
similarly
option ` [under the esc key] = à, è, ì, ò, ù
option e = á, é, í, ó, ú
option i = â, ê, î, ô, û
option n = ã, õ, ñ
Some work more directly such as:
option a = å
option o = ø
option s = ß
option b = ∫
option c = ç
option d = ∂
opton f = ƒ
Some are more arcane but still memorable:
option q = œ (think of an extended o)
option w = ∑ (think of turning the w on its side)
option r = ® (fairly obvious)
option t = †
option y = ¥
option p = π
option v = √
option m = µ
option = = ≠
Usually the shift gets the capitalised version (doesn't work out 100% of the time).
This is what I love about the remarkable clear headedness and forethought that went into Macintosh design. Fortunately most of this has survived the transition to OSX.
Even if I don't specifically know which key does it a quick guess and try gets it for me.

Yes, this feature does exist still in Mac OS X.
To activate this feature, do the following:
1. Open System Preferences.
2. Choose the International Preference Pane.
3. Click the Inputs tab.
4. Check the Character Palette.
5. You will notice a flag appear in your status bar next to your battery Life.
6. Click the flag, and select Show Character Palette.
7. From there you can choose the characters you want.

I would think any key or combination that produces an = on
the screen would
work, regardless of its actual position on the keyboard.
