Spanned Clip will not log and transfer

The editor:
Mac Pro 10.4.11
FCP 6.0.2.
Quicktime Version 7.4.1 (14)
30 minutes of video shot to a P2 card on an HVX200 is unable to log and transfer. Plays fine in the browser and on camera.
Workflow tried:
Write protect P2 and connect HVX200 to Mac via firewire.
Set scratch disk, then log and transfer (clip says spanned).
Error (red caution sign, tried retry, same error).
Tried P2CMS to ingest footage on a firewire drive, then log and transfer, same error.
Any suggestions?

One word for ya: Raylight.
I had the same problem. I tried P2CMS, renaming, and any trick I could think of. Raylight to the rescue. It creates a "pointer" MOV file to the actual P2 media and then you simply import the Raylighted MOV files into FCP. No data loss, and way quicker than a P2 transfer.
Well worth the money.

  • FCE4 will not log and capture long clips.

FCE4 will not capture clips 3 min. or longer from a Canon HF100. It just gives an error mark at the end of the process with no explanation. The capture process freezes on long clips with the Canon HV 30. I can capture short clips with both but nothing over 3 min. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I use the log and transfer for the HF100 AVCHD. I have transfered and edited several 1-2 min. clips but I am trying to transfer a 9 min. clip and at the end of the transfer process FCE4 displays a error mark next to the clip with no explanation as to why there was an error in the transfer. I use the capture mode for the HV30 and I have also captured and edited 1-2 min. clips but the 9 min. clip freezes after a few minutes of capturing. I am using a Western Digital external drive with USB connection for the scratch disc. I have no problems with short clips just the 9 min. one. Any ideas. Thanks

  • P2 Card Spanned Clips will not import to FCP

First of all I'm not even really sure why all of my clips that are over 10 minutes say "spanned" but second of all they will not import to Final Cut Pro. When I do Log and transfer, it pretends like it is working but when it is finished all it gives me is a red "I did not work" exclamation point. Can Anyone Help me?

P2 cards are formatted with an offshoot of FAT32, which has a 4GB limit. So anything over 4GB, will be broken up into multiple parts.
#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Cursor jumping to end of clip in FCP log and transfer

I'm using AVCHD footage from a Sony hxr-nx5u camera. I copied the clips to a hard drive and am now using log and transfer to get the clips into FCP. My problem is that on some of the longer clips (pieces over about 10 min) the cursor start to jump or snap to the end.
Example, through the first part of the clip I can drag the viewing cursor back and forth along the clip's timeline. When I let go, it stays there. If I do the same thing in the second half or later of the clip, when I let go the cursor jumps to the end of the entire clip every time. I can't log or mark in and out points for the second half of the clip unless I just let it play though. (If I do let it play through, I still can't go back and adjust it)
I'm using Final Cut 7 and think it's fully updated.
Very frustrating to say the least. Can anyone provide any help on this?

    Hi -
No first hand experience at this, but my understanding is there is currently a problem importing clips from that camera that are over 10-15 minutes.
See this thread for a possible workarounds/solutions:

  • Does not log and transfer

    Hi,
I'm using MacBook Pro, FCE, Canon HF10 and a QWC external as scratch disk. When I select video clips under Log and Transfer and add them to queue, there is a red exclamation mark under "status" and I cannot transfer them. I deleted the FCE preferences and cache, which did not solve my problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I spotted another comment on the forum with regards to transfer and log where the user was having a problem. They commented that they worked around the issue by selecting the clip in transfer and log and then set the In and Out times on the preview to the right and then selected the Add Clip to Queue.
I just tried this on all the video that would not transfer and it worked. By cutting down each video to segments of 5 mins I was able to transfer all the video from my HG10.
    Hope that helps.

  • Canon HF20 - Issue w/ Log and Transfer in FCE

I just bought Final Cut Express 4, How do you know if you have the most up to date version? How do you upgrade?
The Video shows up, but it WILL NOT "log and transfer" I have tried to drag it down and drop it in and it acts like it will process it, but it will say 1 Clip Queued - Idle, The status then shows up as a Red Octagon with an exclamation mark.
I will do anything for answers,
the only way I can get video into fce so far is by uploading it to imovie then importing it in...
    ANY Help- PLEASE!!!

Perian = I do not have that downloaded. Should I?
The only way I could get video into FCE is through importing it in. When the video plays in the canvas, the video is huge and I only get a portion of the screen....It looks really zoomed in. I'll gladly paypal you anything if you can help me through these beginer issues.

  • Whole clips not tranfering from log and transfer into FCP studio 2

720p 24p clips from P2 get cut short when transfered from log and transfer. I can play the whole clips in the log and transfer window to verify they are there but once they are brought into my project they play about half way through, then the sound drops out and the clip stops short of where it really ended. the clips in the canvas window or on the timeline when played all the way to the end are not the complete original clip? i have tried switching every setting i can think of but to no avail. any ideas out there? thanks a million

no, no in or out points set in log and capture. what's wierd is that clips shot at 24 fps are the ones running short and clips shot at 60 fps come in fine (the slow motion isn't happening but i think i can change that with cinema tools?) anyway, thanks for the suggestion

  • Cant import using Log and Transfer to FCE 4.0.1 from Panasonic DMC-TZ10

Does anyone know if/how I can import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer? I use Log and Transfer with my Sony HDR XR200VE Video Camera but when I try this with the Panasonic DMC-TZ10 I can play the clips in the Log and Transfer Clip viewer however they don't import after I add them to the queue. It just gives me an ! icon and gives up.
I guess I need to know if there is a combination of camera settings and Codecs I can choose that will allow me to successfully import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer.
The settings I can choose on the DMC-TZ10 camera are the Rec Mode (Either AVCHD Lite (GPS Rec), AVCHD Lite, or Motion JPEG) and the Rec Quality SH, H or L).
iPhoto 09 and iMovie 09 will automatically import video from this camera if I choose Motion JPEG and H on the DMC-TZ10

Log and transfer only supports AVCHD. It does not support AVCHD Lite, nor will it work with Motion JPEG media. You could use third party software to convert it, or iMovie and then export a QuickTime movie from there in the correct codec and format.

  • Log and Transfer limit?

I dropped about 8 SD cards onto log and transfer. All shot with the HMC150.
Well I counted the clips and at least 50 out of the 720 did not export.
Is there a clip limit to what it can handle. I would hate to have to go card by card. Thats why I stopped using toast. It was odd to it picked random clips to not export....

OK, people. Got a freaking work-around.
Select the clip in the log and transfer window *), then define your IN and OUT points for this clip, THEN hit "Add to Queue". Marked portion of the clip will import nicely. Now we just need full 1980x1020 support. Hopefully an updated FCE soon?
*) Interface of the Log and Transfer window is as beautiful as any Mac app. Why hasn't that interface lift ever made it to the rest of Final Cut? Hopefully, next version.

  • Log and Transfer Errors with HF10/HF100 AVCHD Cams

Log and transfer will transfer about 80% of clips on the Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder, but the rest receives a red exclamation icon hovering over which brings the useless explanation box "Unknown Error".
Using My Book Pro II dual HD with data stripping connected via Firewire, no speed issues there. Over 900GB is free on the drive, too. Moreover, copying the BDMV > STREAM > *.MTS structure to a DVD and then running the Log and transfer brings up the same error and nothing is transferred.
The best part is that the same clips transfer just fine using iMovie '08. It is even possible to then import them from the iMovie project folder into Final Cut and then work with them.
Hopefully some smart person has an idea what I could try. Thanks!

  • [Help Request] Log and Transfer with Sony HDR-SR10

    Hello Everyone,
I am very new to Final Cut Express and I am trying to import the clips from my camera (Sony HDR-SR10) to Final Cut. Here are the settings that I have for FCE and the camera:
    *Easy Setup*
    Format: Apple Intermediate Codec
    Rate: (all rates)
    Use: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
+settings found in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9162394)+
    *Camera Settings*
HD FH (AVC HD 16M (FH)
Then I mount the camera on the desktop. Then File > Log and Transfer. However, no clips appear in the viewer. I have tried adding a folder to the Log and Transfer window, but no clips show up. I have about 30gb of footage on my camera, so it's not like the camera is blank or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Jon

    Jonathan,
    In addition to Tom's advice...
I have an SR-11 which I believe is nearly identical to your's. Do you have any SD video on your camera? If you do you may have to erase these clips. When I first started using FCE, I had to get rid of any SD footage I had before FCE would display my HD clips in the Log and Transfer window. Fortunately I only had a couple of test clips in SD, so erasing them wasn't a big deal. I don't know why this happens, but since I only shoot in HD mode I never looked into in further.
Additionally insure your playback mode is set for HD and not SD (I don't have my camera with me right now, but if I remember correctly there is a selection in one of the menus for this).
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • RED Log and Transfer

Has anyone used the new Log and Transfer plug in that you can download from red.com ?
I am running FCP 6.0.3 and have downloaded the plug-in, I cant seem to view any clips within the log and transfer window.
Also since I have downloaded the plug-in I cant Log and Transfer P2 footage anymore.
Does your easy set up have to be set for the way your files you wish to view have been shot?
If anyone has any info on this subject, I would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

You have to download/install the Quicktime codec (Final Cut Studio 2 REDCODE plugin) as well as the RED Log & Transfer plug-in and make sure you meet minimum OS/software configurations for your Intel Mac. I don't recall having to create a setup first; it's always just worked like a piece of cake for me. You might try creating a custom setup: if you're working with 4k source clips, you want a size of 2048 x 1024 (2:1) and you'll be transcoding to Apple ProRes 422 HQ. If your RED was shot 2k, your aspect ratio can be 2:1 or 16:9. In log & transfer, when you navigate to the folder with your R3D files, they should show up in the list with thumbnails. In Import Preferences, uncheck "Remove advanced pull-down and duplicate frames" and select the RED plugin and transcode to Apple ProRes 422. Selected clips can be played, in and outs entered, logging notes, etc. Once added to the Queue, they'll start transcoding. The P2 problem might be because you need to reselect P2 as the source in the Log & Transfer import preferences. Hope this helps.

  • Audio Drops on QT Files After P2 Log and Transfer

I'm using Log and Transfer to convert my P2 data into editable QuickTimes; however, for some reason, my rendered QuickTime files loose their audio at some point. I say, "Some point," because it's not at a specific timecode. It's different for each clip. Some maintain the audio for 80% of the clip while others might be 30%. I know the audio is there because I can hear throughout the entire length of each clip in the Log and Transfer window. Any idea what's happening during the render to QuickTime process?

Possible quick fix -won't hurt to try it.
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • Log and Transfer import wrong section.

When I import video using Log and Transfer sometimes the video imported it is not the same as the section I marked. What could this be?

Thank you for your response. The problem is not that I can't find the imported footage - the clips import into my project. I have a lot of footage (interviews) so I am picking out sections to import so as not to have to import entire hour-long clips. In Log and Transfer I mark in and out points and then import. Sometimes this works fine but sometimes the clip that I import does not match up with what I thought I had marked in L&T. So for example, in L&T I mark the In and Out around someone saying "XXX" but then once its imported its a different part of the interview "YYY". I though the problem was with the cursor (because it also sometimes acts wierd and won't go to the spot I click on or drag it too - others seem to have encountered this problem too. So I went through the video and wrote down the Ins and Outs for the sections I wanted and entered them in manually. Still, the sections imported did not match.
I hope this clarifies my question.
    Thanks!

  • "media start" on log and transfer is now time of day

I'm using a Canon T2i, and previously, while ingesting clips in the log and transfer window, the "media start" was 0:00:00 for all clips. For the past few days, the media start has instead been the time of day (i.e. 18:34:23) which has become quite annoying. How can I get it to reset to 0:00:00?

Hmm... my T2i is at work... but I wonder if it is a camera setting.  Usually (on most video cameras) that's where it is.  Wonder if you set it by accident (ahem).
Flip thru the movie menus on the T2i to make sure.
