Sparc Station 10 external SCSI Problems

Hi folks,
i have installed Solaris 8 (10/01) on a Sparc Station 10.
All worked fine, except, that only 2 drives from the external SCSI-Array (4 drives ) are recognized by the system.
The format-command hangs for more than 5 Minutes after starting it and then displays ALL drives, but 2 of the
ext. are shown as unknown drivetype.
In the diag probe-scsi-all, all drives are showed correctly.
The SCSI configuration: 3 SCSI Controllers .
2 internal HD's (1.0 GB) and (i hope for the future) 4
external. CDROM is attach one the external connector
from the internal drivecontroller.
Any ideas... ?
Thx in adavance.

hi,
usually when you see 'drive type unknown' it means that the system does not recognise what type of disk it is. you could try selecting the disk, reformat it or give it a 'type'. failing this, it is a new disk required..
hope this helps

  • Sparc station 20 boot problems/disk image problems

I downloaded the install image for solaris 8 off the sunsite and burned this using cdrecord.
I'm now experiencing strangeness when trying to boot with it.
    I get a :
    "short disk read
the file to boot may not be present?"
    Any idea what this mean?
    Cheers,

Your message is unclear if you are getting short read errors after installation of CD 1 of 2 . You cannot make the / partition greater than 2 gig because the OBP does not know how to boot one that large. Suggest you try 1.9 gig to be safe. In some cases, a really old OBP, like 2.6.0 will limit you to less than 1 gig for /. Other filesystems can be larger than 2 gig, just not the one you're booting from.

  • External SCSI Disk Array problem

I am using a quad MacPro, 3 GB RAM, 10.4.11, ATTO UL5D SCSI card and an external U320 SCSI disc array. In the last few days I could not copy bigger then 3-6 GB files to the external SCSI storage, from the internal drives or from the an external firewire drive, because the system stalls and I have to restart the system using the power on button.
Any idea what can be the probelm? I checked the SCSI cables, termination, reseated the SCSI card, etcm but the problem remained.

First thing I would do is make sure your data and volumes are fine and run Disk Warrior.
Second, check that you have the latest ATTO drivers and firmware.
Are you using Apple Disk Utility, SoftRAID, or something else?
Can you rule out problem being with FW disconnected, or other PCIe cards?
Last, unrelated, up the memory to 4 x 1GB or more. What Apple recommended for Final Cut, symmetrical memory, or quad-channel,

  • Using external scsi for internal drive.

Hi people. I have a beige g3 desktop and recently bought a sound card (pro tools project pci) that has a scsi port for external drives. The card wont work without a drive atached, and I was wondering if I could use a 50 pin centronics to 50 pin internal cable adapter to use an internal scsi inside the g3.
External scsi cases are cheap but I am trying to make some sort of portable set up and would love to avoid them.
I saw adapters on the web but could not find any here (argentina) and it is a headache to get one sent here.
Anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks in advance
    Pepo

I've never used the Digidesign Pro Tools Project card, so is the external hard drive strictly needed to terminate the card's SCSI bus or does the card's configuration software require it? If you just need termination, is the card's external port the HD-50 SCSI-2 type? If so, would this active terminator solve the problem? If the interface isn't the correct one to match the one on the PCI card, could you connect a Centronics-50 active terminator to the end of the cable?
If you need to have a hard drive connected with the setup, were you planning on running the external cable through an unused PCI slot opening in the back? For a clean-looking installation, you could install an adapter like this one, in place of the PCI slot's blank cover. Unfortunately, it prevents the use of the PCI slot for other cards, and this adapter has an external DB-25 port, requiring the adapter to Centronics-50. A standard 50-conductor SCSI ribbon cable would connect between the hard drive and the interior port on the adapter card. I don't know if you've noticed, but just behind the left-side drive bays in the G3 desktop, you'll see a removable piece of metal that closes off the inside corner of the drive bay chassis. You can remove that piece of metal, and provide a path for the drive's data cable to reach the PCI slot area of the computer. It's easier than routing the cable back through the slot behind the CD-ROM drive, which is usually too crowded with cabling anyway.

  • External SCSI emulation???

    Hallo folks,
I have one maybe a little bit silly question.
I would like to gain some experience on field of clustering, but my problem is, that I am not an owner of external storage.
Finally I have for my testing needs available only 1 x old Sun Fire V120 and two old PC's.
My question is, if is possible to make some emulation of external storage on second box and simulate in this way external SCSI storage???
Because my equipment resources are very limited I'll really appreciate any valuable advice, how to build usable test cluster from these old stuff.
My idea is to build something like emulation of SCSI external storage and make this resource availabe like global file system to SunFire box.On SunFire configure two non-global zones and make resources / HA storage, HA services / failover between them.
I am the very beginner so please correct me If my idea is not the right one.
I attach small draft for better explanation....

Thanks folks for any valuable hint....
    Greetings from Prague
    Stan

    Hello Tim,
thanks a lot for your hint.
I hope, that I understand you well, so please correct me if I say something wrong.
Your hint is to install Sol 10 / 32bit release / on two old x86 boxes, on these boxes also install Sun Cluster in 32 bit release.
As a second step to install Sol 10 and Sun Cluster also on V120 box and set as iSCSI target previously installed x86 boxes.
Whole connection then will looks in this case like this.....
    |         |        ethernet
    | x86  |----------------------------|                                          _______
    |         |                        __|___________                   |              |
    ----------                         | ethernet  switch  |_________|   V120   |
    _____                         |_____________|  ethernet    |_______|
    |         |                           |
    | x86  |---------------------------|
    |         |      ethernet
----------In this point I have a question, these x86 boxes will in this case acts as cluster nodes or only like a quorum servers / storages /???
Sorry for my drafts, the makes my imagination better.
    Thanks Tim

  • Mystery with SE3320 - Error message "External SCSI BUS Reset

We have had this problem for several weeks and have been unable to resolve with much trial & error attempts.
Appreciate the help of the Sun community!
    =============
*Initial Problem: During Sybase installation on E2900 server. During "create database" stage, which involved a lot of harddisk operation, the system showed external reset error message for several disks on StorEdge 3320
During mirroring process, we always getting error message "External SCSI BUS Reset" then "target xxxxxx reduce sync transfer rate". We suspect that we have a wrong cable as of we are using P/N 530-3631-01 instead of 530-3631-02 as mentioned on SE3320 Product Manual. Unfortunately, we do not have the suggested cable with us, if you believe the problem is with the cable? Now we are trying to re-seat connections as well as change available SCSI cables just to find our luck. We are also suspicious if we need jumpers and terminators.
2 (two) faulty storages condition now is still in the SAME with condition when we raised complaint which is error message during high load I/O operations. In total, we have 6 SE3320 Storage, and the error messages only occur for this 2 faulty storage systems. It is true that mirroring will still created sucessfully regardless the error messages, however after error messages, I/O speed for that disk will be reduced.

Correction to my previous post: the "burn" button is not visible when browsing through the music library, only in the "purchased" or "playlist" views (which is really confusing, by the way.)
that's normal. you'll only see it in a playlist of some description. (the "Purchased" list is a playlist.) see:
I'm having trouble burning a CD or DVD
is that a home-built or custom-built PC? (checking, because it makes a difference when going checking for updates to drivers and whatnot.)

Hi guys- I currently have a problem involving an external scsi to usb drive that I can't mount. I tried the usual commands, fdisk -l, mount, lsblk, to discover the device but it's not showing up in /dev.
I ran lsusb -v and one section shows "mass storage" and since I don't have any other mass storage devices attached other than my /dev/sda, my guess is that this is the device. Below is the output of lsusb -v, how can I use this info to get this device mounted?

I'm using the latest kernel. The device is a macally Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external drive enclosure. Yesterday my BIOS was detecting it, and later that night I actually mounted the device with mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/drive_2, I fired up the computer today and it's not there anymore, not in BIOS, not in the OS. This thing is acting very buggy and It's starting to scream hardware issues. There is a blue light on the enclusure that tells you when everything is okay, but now the light is red. Plus I can't hear the drive spinning.
arobson- I tried your suggestion and ran udevil monitor and a message popped up "Monitoring activity from the disks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel." Then I plugged in the drive but I'm not sure what's supposed ot happen. I didn't get any messages after that.

  • External SCSI???

Finally upgraded my SE FDHD to 4mb of ram. Problem is the external scsi (lacie joule 730mb) I got off ebay is giving errors OSErr ect. on LILO 7.56 and Anubis 2.54. It formats but can't copy any stuff. Just get disk error. And pathced Apple HD SC Setup will not verify the drive.
Is there any program that does low level format on system 6 or 7. And if not can I replace it with a 36gb like this. Or not so even if I partition the **** out of it.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-IBM-36GB- ... 816wt_1344

    Kavan,
Let's start with a basic question.  Where in the world are you and what resources do you have available to you?
If you are in the US and near a large city and you can find a mac user group and there is some old timer that has parts laying around, you might be able to find what you need.  Otherwise, you need to find a computer recycler in a large city who will watch for items for you.
Forget trying to format the 36gb drive.  I cannot even get the older macs to see the 9 gig drives that I can still buy.  The machined want to see 4 gig or smaller.
You may have tor try several versions of Drive Setup to find one that recognizes the lacie drive.  Mount Everything is some third party software that would see just about any drive, thus the name of the software company.
Post back with a little more information about a city near you.  If ebay is your only source for older stuff, you will have to advertise.  Vendors are not going to pay to list such dated equipment without some serious disclaimers about fitness for you configurations.

  • Samsung 1.5TB External HDD problems - very slow and crashes Mac

I recently bought a Samsung 1.5TB Story Station External HDD, to supplement my full iomega 320GB drive (firewire). The Samsung is USB 2.0, and I quickly realised that the Mac only has USB 1 - i.e. very slow. The HDD took about 15mins to even register in Finder and transfers were inevitably slow.
I bought a new USB 2.0 PCI card, with 4 external and 1 internal USB 2.0 connectors. Installed securely and correctly, it should be plug and play right? Wrong. Firstly I checked with a Compact Flash card that the USB 2.0 was working and it is - very fast upload of images to the Mac. Then I tried to move a group of files from the Samsung to the iomega drive and it started off transferring really fast, saying under one minute to perform the task. Then it froze, and slowly worked it's way up to 2hrs remaining. I had to crash out of it in the end. I tried a few simpler transfers, but it froze in finder each time. Now the Samsung drive is not even getting recognised by the Mac.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a shut down/eject order that I have not been doing? I usually just shut down the Mac with the HDDs on, and that has never been an issue for the iomega drive.
Any help or links appreciated. PSD

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
External drive controller chipsets vary greatly.
Along with this, and a big problem for PPC Mac users, is that the makers don't take PPC Mac architecture into consideration.
The first mistake is to rely on USB/USB 2.0 for connection.
Firewire is +the surest+ bet for an external drive for a Mac.
USB 2.0 is for WinPC machines, which often don't have firewire.
It is NOT a reliable connection method for hard drives.
Second, these ready made externals are often a problem with PPC Macs.
WD MyBook, Seagate FreeAgents, and others, are often just no good.
I don't see why the Samsung would be different.....
The best way to use an external drive, is to get a firewire drive enclosure kit that has an Oxford chipset, and then install the drive of your choice inside.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/
These all have drives installed, but the case and controller is definitely no problem:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATAFW800_FW400USB
    I would return the drive.
Is early failure a problem? Look here:

  • Possibly mundane Mini-DVI to VGA into an external monitor problem

    Hi,
I've had a look over the interwebs regarding my problem and it seems as if it's not unusual to have external monitor problems but I'm not sure if mine is slightly different:
I had a perfectly working set up with my new Macbook (the white one, '06 model I believe), that was connected to my Hanns-G HU196D monitor via a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, no problems whatsoever. But for a couple of weeks now my Macbook just flickers a light blue colour, with nothing at all on the monitor, and my macbook is unusable until I remove the adapter. I've read about updating firmware but I can't see my desktop once the macbook is connected to the monitor so it's not possible to configure anything. I've read somewhere that my external monitor isn't compatible with this set up, but it was until a couple of weeks ago!
My Macbook's 4 months old now and since then I've bought a new mini-dvi to vga adapter and a new VGA cable, no connections seem loose on either mini-dvi port or my monitor's vga port.
    Thanks if you can help!
    Jack

You will need to use a mini Dvi-dvi and a dvi-svideo/rca adapter.
    Joy joy hallelujah.
Pardon the sarcasm...I just wasted 3 hours of my life trying to sort the issue out.
Heard a KWORLD PlusTV PCTOTV Converter SA235 USB 2.0 Interface would sort the issue out for under 40$ but it's not Mac.
    Hope that helps.

  • OS 8.1 - Trying to partition an external scsi drive and backup data.

Have an Apple PowerMac 6000 series minitower at work. It runs a program called 4D, that is a database we use to catalog images. Since I've been with the company, there has been no backup of the database, as an external scsi drive had died and never been replaced.
Since the system is running OS 8.1, I wasn't sure how I could do any sort of network backup, and in the end I managed to get a new 50-pin scsi 50GB LaCie External Hard drive with the 25-pin cable to connect to the PowerMac. Connected it yesterday, and it did appear on the desktop as you'd expect.
But when I went to point 4D to the drive, it didn't seem to recognize the file system. I tried erasing the drive, but it had the same probem. Norton Utilities is on the mac, so I tried replacing the partition. Specifically, I tried creating two partitions. One that's 40GB, that I could do 4D backups to. The other, the remaining space (about 7GB) so I could try to copy the entire drive to that partition and maybe even boot from it if the other drive failed.
However, the drive was still mounted when I tried to repartition and it ended up causing an error. I tried rebooting, and the drive wasn't showing on the desktop, but it still wouldn't repartition. Not knowing was else to do, I low level formatted the drive, told it to write zeros to it, and then create the two partitions. Given I was doing all this on a Saturday and didn't know how long it would take, I left it running in the background to check on Monday.
Anyone have any experience with OS 8.1? Is there a program like Carbon Copy Cloner that works with that OS? And any thoughts on what I'd need to do to get this drive working as indicated above? I started using Apple again with OS X, and it's quite a bit different than 9 and previous. Could sure use some help.

    Hi, merkman2001 -
I would use the Apple utility Drive Setup (which comes with a normal OS 8.1 install) to initialize and partition the drive, rather than Norton or any other third-party utility.
As far as the format type goes, select Mac OS Extended when asked.
    <hr>
Is there a program like Carbon Copy Cloner that works with that OS?
Generally such is not needed with OS 9 and earlier OS versions. All pre-OSX OS's and software can be copied using a Finder (drag and drop) copy process, and remain usable.
This means that the System Folder on the internal drive can be dragged to the icon of the external drive and dropped into it. Ditto any/all additional folders, those containing the programs and documents.
You should be able to successfully do a test boot using the freshly-copied OS on the external drive; this is the best way to verify the integrity of the copied OS.
Can't recall if aliases were used in OS 8.1. If they were, it may be necessary to 'fix' any of them used, since the pathname contained in an alias is not corrected when it is copied to another drive - it continues to point to the original original.
You can also copy the entire source drive to the external one in one action - drag the iccon of the internal drive to that of the external one and drop it in.
After Finder gets done copying everything (this may take some time, so disable any sleep mode or screensaver), there will be a new folder on the external volume - this folder will be named the same as the internal drive. Inside that folder will be a copy of everything that was on the internal drive, including everything left lying around on the desktop and anything left unemptied in the Trash (these will be placed in new folders named "Desktop" and "Trash" respectively).
In order to make that external volume bootable using the freshly copied OS, move the System Folder out of the folder it was copied into, so that it is at the root level of the drive, meaning visible in the window that appears when you first open the drive's icon.

  • Serious external drive problems after installing Mavericks

OK, so now I am seeing multiple external drive problems. Here is my setup: A GTech 4TB drive connected to MacBook Pro via Firewire, formatted of 2 partitions of 2TB each (called GT1 and GT2). This is then daisy chained to two WD drives of 2TB each, called WD1 and WD2.
After installing Mavericks everything worked fine (in fact I have an amazing speed increase). However, after restarting my machine this morning I have the following issues:
The GTech is now a single partition called MyBook (obviously a hangover from the WD drives. I suspect the WD drive managment software) with NO data files. Interestingly it shows the following USED 1,106,870,272 bytes (1.11 GB on disk). This suggests that one of the partitions has disapeared completely.
Whilst WD 1 launces ok, WD 2 causes the Finder to relaunch whenever selected, meaning I can't get to the files. I remember having this problem before when I upgraded to SL, and it having something to do with hidden files that needed to be deleted via the terminal. However, I have searched the web and can't find the solution again.
Given that WD 1 and 2 are my backups of GT 1 and 2, then I now have a situation where I cannot access my primary or backup files for GT 2. Very impressive - not!
Can anbody remember the hidden file solution for the finder relaunch?
Can anybody help me get back my GT1 and 2 partitions (as they have the latest work on them)?

FIrewire & Thunder bolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
Recommend anyone DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

  • Beats audio android app external sound problem.

    Hey guys,
Recently i downloaded the Beats Audio Android app for my Optimus 2. At first it worked fine, the external sound was good, as well as the headphone output. Very shortly after the external sound became very fuzzy and loud, with the headphone output still working perfectly. The only feature that would play sound without fuzz was speakerphone while in a call. I decided to factory default my phone thinking it would fix the problem, i was already going to do it anyway. Come to find out everything got wiped including beats audio, but the same old external sound problems persisted. I'm not sure how to fix it and it is very annoying and sometimes randomly goes off. Help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
    -Tyler
Maybe it has something to do with the master volume? Although i'm not sure how to access that either..

    Hello,
I see that you are having trouble with the beats audio app on your phone. I would suggest that you post your issue here as well for assistance. The link will take you to the android forum for your phone.

  • External SCSI CD-RW on G4 APG

    This is about a Power Mac G4 450 APG, Mac OS X (10.4.8), 896mb RAM running 10.4.8.
This is a hand-me-down that I am reworking for use by my 6 year old daughter. The system has the original 20 Gb ATA HD and I installed an ATA 30 Gb slave HD and an internal SCSI 3.5 Gb HD off the Apple SCSI PCI card. I also updated the internal ATA 100 Mb Zip drive with a 250 Mb zip. All work fine as is.
However, I would like my daughter to be able to assemble her own iTunes playlist from songs on her CDs and then burn the playlist onto a new blank CD to listen to in her room (computer is in the house office so she will not be surfing by her self). I have an Ultra II SCSI external Yamaha CD-RW burner that I would like to attach to the system to allow this.
Unfortunately, any time I hook up ANY external SCSI device to the SCSI card, the boot up sequence stops and a dark box appears in the middle of the monitor. I’ve tried disconnecting the internal SCSI HD from the PCI SCSI card and just using it with any external SCSI device with out sucess. I’ve changed the SCSI devices SCSI ID and that does not help. Also reset PRAM, NVRAM and PMU with no luck.
    Anyone have ideas??
    Thanks,
    DJ

One more thing to check is the termination on that external drive....it may be one of the kind that has a switch to enable termination on the back of the device or it may need a seperate terminator attached to the SCSI port not taken by the cable....I have always had the best luck (not sure why but it seems to be true) if I attach the cable from the computer to the top SCSI connection and the terminator to the bottom connection.
    Cheers.
