Sparesbundle in use when backing up MB to iMac external HDD

Hi all,
I have found the solution to this in regards to using a Time Capsule, but not for my situation.
I am backing up my MacBook Air using Time Machine to an external shared HD attached to my iMac, all done over the network wirelessly.
The first backup completed sucessfully.
The second backup comes up with "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Time Machine MacBook Air-1/Stuart’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use."
The external HD is formatted in journal extended, split into 2 partitions (one for the MB and one for the iMac).
Any ideas?
Apologies if it's already been answered, struggling to find it in the search.
Many thanks,
Stuart.

Turn off file sharing on the iMac, confirming that you want to disconnect all users. Then turn it back on and try again.

I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • Error message when backing up with time on external hard drive

I'm running 10.6.8 OSX & wondering why I get an error message when backing up with time machine onto an external hard drive. Please help! Error message states time machine could not back up & to try again later.

Says "The back up was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.
"The problem may be temoporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair back up disk."

  • Can Time Machine Be Used to Back Up Files from An External Hard Drive?

Please let me provide a little more information to clarify the question.
The hard drive on my computer is not large enough for all my photo and video files so I am planning to purchase a new external hard drive and move my "Pictures" and "Movies" folders to the new external hard drive as a way of freeing up space on my computer. A different external hard drive is now used for backup of the computer's hard drive.
My question is about how backups will be handled if I upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I understand that Time Machine will take the place of the software now being used to back up the MacHD, but back up is still needed for the photo and video files which would be moved off of the MacHD. Will Time Machine back up those files too? That is, will Time Machine back up specified folders which are being stored on one external hard drive and place the backups on a different external hard drive? And, will Time Machine do that in addition to backing up the MacHD? If so, are separate partitions needed for the MacHD and the Photo/Video backups, or will Time Machine put everything in the same partition?
Any advice and/or suggestions for handling this in would be most appreciated.
    Thanks for your help.

As captfred says, yes (as long as the drive is formatted for a Mac, not Windoze).

  • How do I use an iPhoto library stored on an external HDD (time capsule) on the new photos app?

I have recently upgraded to a MacBook Air with the latest 10.10.3 updates as such it has photos installed, not iPhoto. The MacBook I'm upgrading from still had 10.9 and as such had iPhoto app.
The MacBook air has a smaller SSD (128GB) than the HDD from my 2008 MacBook, and isn't big enough to store my iPhoto library (over 150GB). I want to just keep my library on the external HDD (which is an Apple Time Capsule).
When I follow the steps on Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support it seems to want to import all the photos, it took hours to get to just 3% of importing so I left over night. In the morning it said my MacBooks storage isn't big enough, which of course it isn't - I didn't want to import the library on my new MacBook Air !
I just want to change the location that photos looks for the library every time it opens, I don't actually want it to import the whole library which it appears to have tried to do. thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me!
It is connected over wireless. I don't have an RJ45 connection on the MacBook Air (although will purchase an adapter if needed). Even if I do have an RJ45 connection does this mean I can only ever use wired to view my external photo library?
I suppose having the wired connection will give me the time to organise my photos and delete some of the rubbish (which I would have liked to do on my old MacBook first but it was running too slow, especially with such a big photo library - so I treated myself to a new MacBook Air so I did!).
And I guess I could then put my favourite photos on the MacBook Air and have a separate library of older/lesser used photos on the Time Capsule and just access those as and when over RJ45 network cable. I prefer to use wireless as much as possible as the Time Capsule is normally stored in a room I don't use the MacBook or other wireless devices !

  • Upgrading to Snow Leopard when startup disk is already an external HDD

    Hi All,
Am just in the process of upgrading to Snow Leopard (currently running Leopard) on my Mac Mini. When originally setting up the Mini, I created an external HDD as the "startup" disk.
Now when attempting to upgrade, I only have the option to upgrade on to the Macintosh HDD as the upgrade disk tells me that the external HDD can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme.
I know I can use the Disk Utility to change the partition scheme on the external HDD, however will doing this erase the existing data on the HDD and potentially leave me with a Macintosh HDD that isn't the startup disk and an external HDD without an operating system?
Any advice on how to properly partition the external HDD and effectively upgrade to Snow Leopard when I'm already running Leopard OS X from an external HDD would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Lee

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I don't see any alternative other than making a complete backup of that external drive, redeclaring the partition scheme, then restoring the backed-up data to it. A side benefit is that you'll now have a backup of everything in case something goes wrong with the upgrade, which is an excellent idea anyway.

  • Can I use the old Time Capsule as an external HDD only?

how to make TC to be a new external because i dont need to back up things, just want to be External HDD,if work, can the files through by wifi ?

when you lose important files for the first time, you will see how wrong that statement is
how to make TC to be a new external
click here for instructions. once set up,  time machine may ask you if you want to use the TC for backups but you can decline.
the TC will show up in the finder under the shared header. click on the icon and your computer will connect to the TC, when that's done, you will see a folder called Data, which actually is the TC's drive. click on the folder and the TC's drive will mount on your desktop.
now you can drag & drop files to it like with any ordinary external HD.
can the files through by wifi ?
    yes.

  • Using TM with laptops, Airport Extreme w/ external HDDs

I haven't tried this yet, but after reading about the laptop issues (unplugging, plugging into external HDDs to get caught up, etc.), I was wondering if TM would work by setting up external HDDs on the Airport Extreme as the backup destination for laptops? That way, it could sync wirelessly every hour, and you wouldn't have to worry about remembering to plug into the HDD at the end of the day, etc. Anyone tried this yet?
I've had problems in the past trying to get my external HDDs to work with Airport, so that's my first problem. Not sure how the speed will be either. I have 1 MacBook Pro and 2 MacBooks in the house, so this is somewhat of a big deal for my family. Backups right now (Tiger) are kinda left up to the user to remember to do (using .Mac backup program).

Officially at this point Time Machine can't use AirDisk (HD on an AirPort Extreme), though some have suggested workarounds. Since this was a feature in the late betas, according to many other threads discussing Time Machine via AirDisk, it's not too unlikely that this will become a feature once Apple fixes whatever caused it to be dropped from Leopard.

  • Backing up entire itunes to external HDD

how do i "export" & "backup" my entire itunes library (music/vids/pics etc) to an external HDD?
after reformatting my PC, can I import again without problems, even songs purchased from itunes store?

Here is how to move it to an exHD:

Before you reformat your PC, deauthorize it

Yes, you can get your library back intact - if you save the ITL file and have the same user name on your fresh system:

  • Types of discs to use when backing up music

am i only allowed to use a certain type of disc (+ or -) when i backup my music to discs? I would really like to backup my music as data on DVD's, but I have discs, and itunes keeps telling my to install a disc. I don't know why....please help

I assume you mean it tells you to keep putting in a blank disc? The problem is with iTunes. What you need to do is revert to an older version of iTunes (like version 7.2 preferably). Here is the solution until Apple releases a version of iTunes that fixes the problem.
1). Download iTunes 7.2. If you do not know how to do this email me at [email protected]
    2) Uninstall iTunes 7.3 (version you have now) and restart your computer. You will NOT lose songs or song ratings or other information.
3). Install iTunes 7.2. You will now be able to back up to discs. Any of those you listed should work. DVDs will also work if your drive supports them. A few more things to keep in mind are whether your drive supports only write cds or rewritable cds. If you have any questions about this or your drive, then again feel free to email me.

  • HT3275 getting already in use when backing up iMac to Time Machine

I'm getting the following error when trying to backup to my iMac to my Time Machine, and I think it might be related to the MacBook I purchased yesterday and connected it to the same Time Machine.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Martin’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
Any suggestions on how to determine the problem and resolution?
    Marty

A computer is holding open a connection which is stopping other computers from working.. or you have loaded the sparse bundle in finder and it is not being unmounted.
Go to the airport utility.. (5.6 if Lion) and manual setup.. disks page.. disconnect all users.. you will then be able to use the device.
I am assuming Time Machine means Time Capsule.. it is a common mistake.
There are a number of other issues that cause the problem but that is the most common.

  • Why are sparsebundles used when remote Macs backup to my external drive?

At one time I was moving my external G-Drive from my iMac to Macbook so that both computers could use Time Machine to backup. Now I figured out that my MacBook can "see" the drive when it's connected to my iMac and backup to it. The strange thing is, now the Macbook saves its data as a sparsebundle, instead of creating a folder with the various backups like it once did. Is this a good thing? Will it no longer create multiple backups for each week? What if I needed a file in the backup from two weeks ago?
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    polishedstaple wrote:

When the drive is connected directly, the "Star Wars" display won't see a sparse bundle. To view the backups in such a case, you'll have to manually mount the sparse bundle (by double-clicking it via the Finder), and use the +*Browse . . .+* option, per #17 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
The way you were backing-up, Time Machine put the backups for both Macs in the Backups.backupdb folder. To view those backups, you'll have to connect the drive directly.
Note that when Time Machine runs out of room for new backups of the MacBook, it won't delete the oldest backups of it from the Backups.backupdb folder. So at some point you'll need to delete the old backups from that set manually. See #12 in the FAQ.

  • Error message when backing Music Library up to external drive

I am trying to copy my iTunes music folder from my laptop onto a firewire drive to back it up. I keep getting the same message "Sorry, the operation cannot be completed because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code -50)" Copying other files works fine, this only happens with the iTunes folder. How can I fix this?
PowerBook G4 titinium   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   LaCie external 150 GB drive

Well that probably rules this out:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25532
If you can't copy the folder Music>iTunes for backup then I would try to backup Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Artists folder one by one to see if it was an individual folder that was causing the problem.
Are you just using Drag and Drop for the copy?
I've found reference to your error message here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106947
but it appears to be for an earlier release of Mac OS X.
Sorry, I'm running out of ideas.
Hope someone else can help with this.

While backing up my iphoto library to my external hard drive - I got this message - "Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in iphoto library.2 could not be read or written. (Error code -36) What to do?

Right click on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents" a folder opens a inside folder called "Originals"
Open that and copy in sections until you find the corrupted file(s), then remove them from iPhoto or replace with good copies.

  • When syncing iPhone with iTunes, my external hdd disconnects

Hi! After I updated iTunes to the last version (9.1.1) appears one problem — when i connect my iPhone 3G 16Gb and iTunes is launched, it starts to sync as it is intended — and my external usb hdd disconnects. And it is required to restart the whole system with disconnected iphone to connect hdd as usual.
The itunes music library is on this hdd. I have mac-mini 1.83 core 2 duo with 4Gb ram and latest update of 10.5 Leopard.
I also recently installed fruux for syncing this mac-mini with my macbook, and may be it is the reason, but I uninstalled it fully (as writen on fruux website), but the problem is still as is.
Please, help — this problem makes my iphone fully isolated from my iTunes library :(((
