Sparks on the USB port
Hi,
I am using a Targus USB hub with its own power source. When I plug the USB from the hub into the iMAC (June, 2012 model), I always see electrical sparks. This does not happen with a PC USB port. Does anyone know if this is safe to continue?

Something is wrong, sparks are never good around solid state stuff. Did the hub work normally once you plugged it in? Does your iMac have a good ground? Do a SMC Reset and see if the problem persists:

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

How can I test the usb port on my Time Capsule to see if it is working?
Ever since lightening struck nearby (which took out our internet and copy machine) the printer I had connected to the usb port on my Time Capsule in my office has has failed to print through the TC. I can plug the printer directly into my MacBookAir and can print just fine. So there is nothing wrong with the printer nor the usb cable.
I've turned off and unplugged the printer with the usb cable connected & disconnected to the TC, no change. I've unplugged the TC, no change. I've opened the printer utility several times, and always get the "offline" error. I open the print queue, and it says the printer is not connected. I reinstalled the driver for the printer, still the same thing.
I'm starting to wonder if the usb port on my Time Capsule got fried. Any help anyone can give in trying to see if the usb port even functions anymore would be greatly appreciated.
My Time Capsule is model no. A1409.Power is not likely to be killed .. it is the data components that are more fragile.
So you do have power which as you say is why the USB flashes.. but you don't have signal.
The only other thing you can do is use USB powered hub.. if you have one handy.. but I would not go out and buy one.
A damaged board is impossible (at cost less than replacement TC) to repair. And repairers do not like working on stuff damaged by lightning as components that did survive were stressed.. the transistor junctions become liable to fail at any time.. so you repair it and it just keeps coming back as not working. Sorry if you cannot use it without USB junk it and buy a replacement. A second hand Gen3 is about the best of them it seems.
You can also buy an ethernet to USB print server.. but a new ethernet or wireless network printer is probably near to the same price.
You can hunt ebay for second hand USB print servers.. or airport express, extreme or TC.. often you can find something suitable for just a few dollars if you shop well. Since you don't need the latest greatest to do this sort of job.. and people are disposing of things like USB print servers as soon as they buy network printers. -

OK. The 6.0 version no longer has a printer configuration that I could find. You might try Printer Sharing in the Sharing preferences.
I would also check the printer's user manual for help with the setup, and that failing check the manufacturer's website and/or tech support. -
My ipad is locked up with the screen showing a picture of the usb port with an arrow to itunes.
Then connect your iPad to your computer and use iTunes to restore.

My iPad is on the same network as the Airport Extreme. The HP printer is on the list of Airprint printers but I'm not using it as a wireless printer, per se, as it's hooked up to the USB port on the Airport Extreme.
I installed the HP ePrint app on my iPad. Unfortunately, the app could not find the printer either.

Not necessarily. AirPrint uses a protocol separate from the communication protocol used for the Extreme's USB port. The HP printer may disable AirPrint when its USB port connected to a valid device, which is my reason for recommending you use it wirelessly.
From AirPrint Basics:
AirPrint printers connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported.
AirPrint printers connected by Ethernet are supported in OS X.

HP's Mac support has always been miserable though. I have been much happier since I abandoned HP and started buying Brother printers. They just work. -
Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?
a) HP printer with USB port only (no ethernet port) connected to Airport Express
b) No issue printing from Macs
Tests
1) Installed Bonjour 2 - does not find printer (now uninstalled)
2) Bonjour 3 is listed in programs but no way to access
3) Using TCPIP address (and no Bonjour) gives 'Unsupported Personality' error when printing test page

p.s. why are all Windows 8.1 questios n the forum 'Locked' with no reply?This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes. It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.

I've upgraded to OS 10.8.2 and my Bowers and Wilkins MM-1 Speakers were working fine until today, and now they won't play any sound at all, even though iTunes shows the audio is playing. I've tried both the headphone jack and the USB port. Please help! I don't want to have to be stuck using my internal speakers!

Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &

I run SmartBoards connected to iMacs running 10.7 and 10.8 throughout my school. On one of these computers the mouse has recently started freezing the minute a SmartBoard is plugged in to the USB port. The mouse 'runs' to the bottom right side of the screen, a cloud often is under the pointer, and it is not longer interactive. You can move the mouse upward a bit with the cloud following some of the time but it does not work. Once the SmartBoard is unplugged the mouse works normally. This particular computer worked fine with the SmartBoard until recenlty. Any solutions or ideas?

Why does my nook open iphoto when i plug it in the usb port on the back of my imac running 10.6.8
I have downloaded Adobe Digital Editions and downloaded Overdrive from the public library. When I plug the Nook eReader in the USB port in the back of the iMac, iPhoto opens immediately. I know this is not a forum for Nook eReaders, but I have to start somewhere and figured since iPhoto is opening automatically, maybe someone can give me a clue.

Not sure where to go from there, but I would start by looking at the setting in both iPhoto Preferences and Image Capture if I wanted iPhoto to ignore that device. -

I purchased a MacBook Pro in Jan '11. Both the USB ports on the laptop were working fine. Recently, I have noticed, any external device connected to the USB port, towards the battery side does not recognize the connection.
Any solutions ?. Is this defect covered under warranty ?.

Try resetting the SMC.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer. -
How do I use my ipod in the car without it constantly charging? I have to use a docking cable into the USB port because the 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack I bought doesn't work with the ipod (although it does work with an MP3 player). My ipod is a 5th generation 80GB classic.
I know this is old - but did you ever get this working. Thinking of getting a 780 ti card and I have an older mac with the mini-displayport too.

I plugged in my WD external hard drive into my Airport Extreme via the USB port. The hard drive will not show up in the disk section in the airport utility... How do I hook an external hard drive up to the airport extreme? I have tried 2 different WD hard drives. I must be missing something!!!
Thanks!To be recognized by the AirPort for sharing, the WD HDD has to be formatted in either HFS+ (ideal) or FAT32. The easiest way to format the HDD is to use the Disk Utility in OS X.

How do I sync my iPhone 5 to my new PC? iTunes will not recognize it even when plugged in the USB port. Settings>General>iTunes wifi sync is still my old laptop. Any help is appreciated.

Hey...i bought an ipod touch last month and i did not Realized that a piece of the usb port was missing on the bottom of the ipod touch. So every time i want to charge it on my dock it would not charge and i tried to us the usb for my computer and that did not work. I did not buy my ipod from a Apple store or online i bought it at a Army base that had a store called The BX. I dont have my receipt to return it, is there any way u can fix it. Please reply as soon as u can.
