Sparse bundle can't be accessed

I've got a LinkStation Live 1TB. I left it backing up overnight. It finished backing up. Now when I try to enter time machine, it can never connect to the drive. It returns the error: An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584). I am able to connect to it via the NASNavigator and via Finder, but TimeMachine can't find it. I remove the access permissions for the directory the backup is in and I get the error: The file server “LS-CHL16E” has closed down. What is going on? The backup disk image “/Volumes/MacBookProBackups-2/._Alessandro Zuniga’s MacBook Pro_c82a140c3170.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).

Is that on a 64-bit system, john?
If so, even though it's about a different application (and even if you're on Windows 7 rather than Vista), I'd try the following document:
Vista Home Premium (x64) and installing Itunes - SOLUTION
The theory here is that last time I checked, the SafariSetup.exe installer include a 64-bit bonjour installer (for installs on 64-bit systems). So in principle, the same problem as discussed in the link can hit a Safari install (even though I'm not sure I've seen an example of it in the flesh before).

  • Time Machine Error sparse bundle could not be accessed

Issue: Time Machine Error "the backup disk image "/volumes/data/.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
Background: I have an '07 iMac with an external WD 1TB hard drive to store video, pictures and music as well as a 1TB Time Capsule to use for my Time Machine back ups.  Once I converted to Lion, I started getting the "sparsebundle...counld not be accessed" error message.  The Apple support line directed me to take the issue up with my local Apple store (or else they would have charged me $50).  I went to the local Apple store and was directed to erase my sparsebundle and start over.  My iMac apparently values the sparsebundle as it would not let me delete it...it would just hang up.  I finally had to erase the file from the Time Capsule and start over (based upon some recommendations I found within the Apple Support Communities).  I did that two days ago and it looked like I was in the clear.  I have about a day's worth of backups and now just started getting the same error message as I did before.  I am a casual computer user with limited trouble shooting skills.  Does anyone have any ideas, tips or suggestions as to the source of the problem and how to properly trouble shoot the issue?

Dirty of Apple.. this is a bug.. that is caused by your upgrade to Lion.
We see loads of issues. Did you upgrade install? I am not sure that that is some of the issue.
Anyway the solution is to restart the TC.. just pull out the plug and reboot it.
Like windows.. first support question. Did you turn it off and on again??
    Read C17

You need to use the 5.6 utility so download and install that.

  • Time Machine ,,,,,sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)

Time Machine on my iMac (2.66 i5) is failing with the message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.  The backup image "/Volumes/Time Machine/Shaggylane iMac.sparsbundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
This error appears when the backup is started......it spends a bit of time "Looking for backup drive", then displays the message.
The directory "/Volumes/Time Machine" has the following permissions:
drwx------  13 root        wheel    398 24 Aug 13:15 Time Machine
I was able to login as root and go into that directory.  I didn't see any broken links or anything that stood out.
I was also able to go into Time Machine from the desktop and flip through the backup history.  It seemed to be responding normally.
Time Machine has been working fine for 2+ years.  I suspect it got buggered-up when I accidentally rebooted while it was doing a backup October 12th.  Lion was installed in the spring.  On the 12th, I installed a Lion patch bringing it up to 10.7.2.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Doug

I have not found a long-term solution (fix), but in my case the volume where the Time Machine backup should occur usually is mounted on the desktop but not as a shared volume (incidated as a drive with the people holding hands superimposed over the drive icon). If I drag the drive to the trash (unmount it), the next time Time Machine is scheduled to run, it completes successfully.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro backup to Time Machine (on my 1TB Time Capsule) when I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.5.? What does it mean when this error pops up: MacBook Pro.sparse bundle could not be assessed (error - 1).???? Please help me fix this!

Apparently I am not the only person having this problem as I have seen many threads about it. If ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.
I try and run my backup as I always have, but it HAS NEVER COMPLETED SINCE I UPGRADED TO LION. As many mentions, I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 hoping that would fix my issue and it didn't help at all. I also unistalled WD SmartWare to no avail. It's really starting to annoy me since I have as much money invested in my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as I do in my car....
I have more than enough space on the Time Capsule, but Time Machine is still failing and coming up with an error message: MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be assessed (error - 1).
    Someone, anyone, please help!

  • Time machine has created a new sparse bundle

I have booted my new Macbook from my time machine back up. Time machine has created a new sparse bundle and I cannot access the previous backups. Is there any way to make time machine to use the previous sparse bundle?  Thanks, Karl

Use the old backups to continue backups or use them for migration etc..
If you have a new Mac then continuing to use the same backup is not recommended..
    Info you can see here..

I do not think it is good idea.. however you can access the old backup to get files if you need them.

  • How to delete sparse bundle on TC?

I ran out of room on my 1TB TC, so got a new 3TB TC and have set it up for Time Machine.  I want to delete all files on the 1TB TC and use it only as an auxiliary hard drive.  I can't seem to delete the Sparse Bundle file. How do I delete the sparse bundle file on my old TC?

Solved the problem! after a hint by 'nick_harambee', dated Feb 21, 2009 (see at the bottom of: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9036656#9036656) in which he suggested to enable 'guest access' in the Airport Utility tab on the Time Machine..!
Instead of all failed attempts to change the permissions with 'chflags' (for which you don't have the permission ;-)..
So, now the whole -unneeded- sparse.bundle can be erased and Time Capsule disk space recovered..
Thanks 'nick_harambee'! for the simple hint,

  • Why is the sparse bundle so much smaller than the backed up computer...can I be confident all files are backed up?

    Hey gang,
iphoto folder became big so I have moved it to an external drive. I made sure the external disk is not excluded from timemachine backup in tm preferences. Backup seemed to take forever (it actually said "preparing for backup" the whole time with a spinning progress bar) ie 24 hours and still the same pogress bar.
i stopped the process as i had no confidence anything was actually happening
When i open up time machine, an earlier version of my imac is there, but the external drive is kind of greyed and i cannot access it.
When  I check the sparse bundle size, it is under 200 gb, when my imac is around 600 gb, 900 with the external drive.
Why is the sparse bundle so small relative to the imac? are there hidden data files outside of the sparse bundle? when checking the preferences, it states total included is 921 gb...yet that is not reflected in the sparse bundle size.
I want to be sure iphoto is actually backed up before deleting it from my imac.
    thanks anyone!

    marten berkman wrote:
I am wondering whether the "processing" progress bar was due to the time capsule freeing up space for the additional data on the new external drive. When I cancelled it, available space on the tc incresed from 200 to 500 gb.
Yes, quite possibly.  Especially on Leopard and Snow Leopard, that process on network backups is excruciatingly repetitive and slow.    It's improved greatly in Lion and later, but still isn't exactly quick.
The backup complete, i checked the contents of the backed up version of the external drive, and the iphoto folder was the same size as original, so I have confidence that iphoto is backed up. Now I could delete the iphoto from the imac, freeing up tons of space.
    Yay!
Still curious why the imac sparsebundle is only 160gb, while my macbook pro sparsebundle is about 700 gb...as though they are inversely named from the computers they back up.
Oh, I didn't realize you had two Macs backing-up to the TC.  Which one is the external HD connected to?
Unless you've specifically excluded things, after the initial backup, the sparse bundle should be nearly the size of the data it's backing-up (TM does exclude some things like system work files, most caches and logs, and trash, so the backups are a few GBs smaller).  As you do more backups, of course, it will grow.
So please clarify how much data is on each drive, Mac, and sparse bundle.
Also, the 2tb time capsule has 258 gb of 1.8 tb available....am I to suppose that there is hidden backup data not in the sparse bundles?
Sparse bundles are odd critters.  They don't automatically shrink when things are deleted from them.  Instead, the vacated space is used for new files until it's full, then it begins to grow again.  Time Machine will "compact" them when necessary, to reclaim the empty space, but doesn't take the time to do it unless it's out of room.
You can do that manually if you want, per the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12.

  • Can't share sparse bundle disk image

I'm trying to create a sparse bundle disk image in /Users/Shared for sharing between two users on the same computer. No matter what I've tried, the disk always mounts as read only for the non-owner user. I've tried creating the disk image in both accounts, adding the non-owner user with "read & write" permissions, changing all permissions (including everyone) to "read & write," but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any experience sharing sparse bundle disk images using the shared folder?
    Christopher

I realized after reading the replies above (thank you, A.Carlo and KJK555) that I was only applying permissions to the top level of the sparse bundle image and not to the underlying directories and files in the package. This was what was keeping the second user from making changes to the mounted disk image. After digging a little deeper into possible solutions, following is what I decided to do.
First, here are the requirements for my sparse bundle disk image:
    1. Full permissions (rwx) for user1 and user2
    2. No permissions (---) for everyone else
    3. Directories and files created by user1 or user2 need to be fully accessible (rwx) by the other user
In order to block access to the sparse bundle from unwanted users and to allow for inherited permissions for all future directories and files, I took the following steps:
    1. Created a new group (group1) with user1 and user2 as members
    2. Created a new folder (Example) under /Users/Shared
    3. Removed all permissions from the new folder for everyone but user1 (chmod 700 Example)
    4. Added an ACL to prevent group everyone from deleting the new folder (chmod +a "group:everyone deny delete" Example)
5 Added an ACL to give group1 full permissions (rwx) to the new folder and allow those permissions to be inherited by new directories and files created within that folder (chmod +a "group:christophertemple allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeex tattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directoryinherit)
This is what the new folder looks like from Terminal:
    $ ls -le
    total 0
    drwx------+ 4 user1 wheel 136 Sep 18 12:45 Example
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    1: group:group1 allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeex tattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
This folder is now accessible only by user1 and user2 and any files or directories created in this folder will be accessible by both users, regardless of which of the two users created them.
Next, I created an encrypted sparse bundle disk image within the new folder. In Terminal, the disk image looks like this:
    $ ls -le
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x@ 6 user1 wheel 204 Sep 18 13:03 Example.sparsebundle
    0: group:group1 inherited allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeex tattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
As can be seen above, the new sparse bundle has inherited the group permissions from the parent directory, giving user1 and user2 full access to the disk image.
While I could have added a few extra steps and changed the permissions of the mounted disk image, I decided against doing so; the default permissions were perfect for my use. By default, the mounted disk image is set to "Ignore ownership on this volume."
When mounted by user1 this is how the disk image looks in Terminal:
    $ ls -le
    total 8
    drwx------ 7 user1 staff 306 Sep 18 13:01 Example Disk Image
When mounted by user2 this is how the disk image looks in Terminal:
    $ ls -le
    total 8
    drwx------ 7 user2 staff 306 Sep 18 13:01 Example Disk Image
With these permissions, no user, other than the user that mounted the image, has access to the image while the image is mounted. This is useful from a security standpoint, keeping others from viewing the contents of the disk image, as well as from a data integrity standpoint, allowing only one person to access files on the disk image at a time (important for some of the data base files the image contains).
Thanks again to those that responded. I hope this post is helpful to others who might have similar requirements as I did.

  • Sparse bundle access

I have a Mac with an external drive that I use as a backup target for another Mac. Everything works OK with Time Machine and the networked computer but I cannot gain access to the sparse bundle from the Mac that the drive is attached to. The sparse bundle folder has a red minus sign on it and any attempts to open the folder are met with a dialog that says I do not have enough access privileges to open the folder. The account has administrator access, is there for me to gain access to the folder?

No, you do not want to enable root access as that is a major security risk, and with root access you could easily render the system unusable by a simple mistake or doing something you should not do.
Does this other account belong to you or to another user? It would be improper for us to help you gain access to another user's data without knowing there is no objection from that user.
If you need only occasional access then have the other user drop the files and/or folders to which you need access into the /Users/Shared/ folder. Anyone can access files that have been placed in the Shared folder.

  • Loaded Mountain Lion and time capsule no longer works, airport utility can't be configured, back ups have stopped, sparse bundle in use errors occur, what a mess!!!!

Should Airport Utility now be defunct for my time capsule because I have upgraded OS to Mountain Lion? I have tried every fix I can think of but AU will not set up. I'm also getting repeated time machine back up failures and now I have a new "sparsebundleinuse" error which is totally useless to me, I have no idea what a sparse bundle is, I have no idea what it's suddenly being used by and there's no information to say what to do about it. Apple is killing me here!!!

I've tried to but on the install for Airport Utility 6, after the download I get through the introduction then the license then I get "airport utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported" and that's it, no more options!?

  • Can I put Network Users on a sparse bundle disk image?

Hello! Can anyone out there help me figure out what seems to be a rather complicated feat?  I'm trying to get users to log in to client iMacs as if they were local accounts, but the user account information is stored on a sparse bundle disk image.
Long story short, I've currently got OS X Server running network user accounts tied to Active Directory.  When the users log in, they have a sparse bundle disk image that automatically mounts on their desktop.  This has been an effective solution for some of our software that doesn't play well with Network storage, as the sparse bundle is treated like local storage by the Macs.
However, what would be a much better solution for us is to actually have the whole user account stored on the disk image.  It's a little like the way FileVault 1 worked, except the disk image is actually stored on a network drive.  So far, as a proof-of-concept, I've been able to make this work manually: I've had to log in to a local admin user and then mount the user's sparse bundle with all their user folder contents contained within.  Then, once the user path is changed to point to the disk image, the user logs right in, everything works exactly as expected (once I got the permissions set correctly).  This method works exactly like a Network User account except that all the applications see it as local storage instead of network storage.
The trick, though, is automating this process.  I want a user to sit down in front of any iMac, log in and go straight to their account.  It would be nice if OS X Server was able to accommodate this with a setting, but it doesn't.  So, my plan so far has been to create a generic local account with a script on the desktop that users can open to login in.  The script would then mount the network share, then mount the sparse bundle disk image, then log the user in to their "local" account on the iMac.  When they log out, there's a login hook that restarts the machine.
So far, I'm stumbling over the fact that the sparse bundle unmount when logging out of the generic "login" account, preventing the user from logging in.  But if I leave the generic account logged in, then the loginhook to restart the computer doesn't work.
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.
