Sparse bundles on a networked drive emptied!?! HELP!!!

Our workgroup relies on data in sparse bundles, served to a small workgroup via Mavericks Server.  There was a glitch, and now all sparse bundles (almost a TB of important data) are showing up extremely small (~400kb) and have no mountable disks.  Can anyone explain this?  Any ideas?  Any way to recover that data?  This was work created today, and has not been backed up yet.

  • Sparse bundle mounting from NAS drives very slow

I have an unusual problem, where one of my user accounts has recurrent trouble mounting large sparse bundles located on NAS drives. The sparsebundles are hard drive clones, 200-250GB sized. NAS connected by gigabit ethernet.
On trying to mount an image with Finder, there is a pause, lasts 2-3 minutes, then the image mounts, and quite often Finder then goes unresponsive. Relaunching Finder then seems to fix the problem, at least temporarily....
Unmounting the sparsebundles takes 2-3 minutes also....
Two other user accounts I have, one on same hard drive as the affected one, work well, the same sparsebundles mount/unmount instantly....
Yesterday deleting Finder prefs fixed the problem, but then today the problem was back.
This is obviously a Finder issue, connectivity to the NAS in question is fine for other files, even for a 300GB .dmg image, just sparse bundles seem affected....
Any ideas?? It's driving me nuts now!

I too am having this issue. Intel / 10.5.8 attached to an SMB share from Ubuntu Linux.
I ran a test of various image types, and while Sparse Image works, Sparse Bundle fails. Here are my logs. Happy to do some testing and log posting if anyone has a test theory to try.

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
    Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.
Time Machine cannot turn on because sparse bundle is in use.
New files that were made are no longer available. It's almost as if the computer jumped back in time.

  • HT2305 I am using an Iomega Home Network Media Server Cloud Edition. I need to know to how to install Bonjour to the Iomega so that it will run my TiVo Desktop Program to transfer media files to/from the TiVo units to/from the Home Network Drive.  Help ?

TiVo support has already advised me that Bonjour Browser is needed so that the TiVo can communicate with the Iomega.  The Iomega already has installed Apples' AFP protocol.
The only way that I can currently transfer or access any files on the Iomega Home Network Cloud Drive with TiVo is if the folder on the Iomega Drive is listed in the TiVo Desktop Plus software that runs the TiVo server. This means that my laptop has to be continually running non-stop for files to transfer or for me to access them.
I am looking for a way where TiVo will recognize the Iomega Home Network Server just as it recognizes the other TiVo unit on my home network.  TiVo menus have a place for adding an app that is TiVo compatiable; however, I have not been able to find any.
Can someone please help?  TiVo has advised me that there 3rd Party software out in tech world that is capable of running the Tivo Desktop Server better than the TiVo Desktop Server Plus program itself but I have been unable to locate it..
    Thanks

Just had a look at this: http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_xfs_nas.php and decided it's more hassle than it's worth so going to restore my files the sloooowwww way. Anyone know a good way to sync data to the new drive?

  • Sparse Bundle Images on external NTFS formatted drive

I'm currently in the process of re-arranging my own backup setup following on from my recent update to Snow Leopard. For this purpose i have the lend of a NTFS formatted external drive and used a large Sparse bundle disk image.
Under 10.5.7 with the latest MacFuse and and unknown version of NTFS-3G i had no problem using the sparse bundle images, they mounted, I could read and write, and the images where only unmounted when I explicitly ejected them.
Under 10.6 with the latest MacFuse and the latest NTFS-3G i have a very strange behavior.
Read and write works fine on the NTFS drive, as do regular disk images and old style sparse disk images.
However sparse bundle disk images will mount and then immediately dismount again. I have no problems mounting the sparse bundle images from HFS+ drives or when using the NTFS drive read only using apples drivers instead of MacFuser+NTFS3G.
The disk image dose not see the be the source of the problem; as any sparse bundle that opens fine on a HFS+ drive exhibits the behavior when moved onto the NTFS drive. Moving the image back onto a HFS+ drive allows the image to be mounted.
The problem is that I require to move some additional files onto the NTFS drive so I can reformat my backup drive
As a side note mounting using "hdiutil attach -readonly" seems to partially resolve the issue; the image will mount and stays mounted but it is read only.

  • Please help - vault on networked drive !?

I am trying to create a Vault on an external networked drive. The drive is an ethernet Maxtor unit which I have plugged into my LAN via a router. I can access the drive in Finder - and can import from, save to etc. in all applications (including Aperture).
I can mount and navigate to it in the Add Vault dialog, However, when I click "Add" I get the message:
"Aperture does not support networked vaults. Please select a directly attached storage device (such an an internal, USB or FireWire - connected hard drive."
I thought this was being fixed. It seems ludicrous not to be able to vault to a networked drive. Help !!!
    Paul

I had (or rather has the same problem). I also have a Maxtor Hared Storage Plus and was quite surprised to find that Aperture did not supported a network drive for vaults. I then created a drive on a USB drive I have and then tried to copy the Vault file to the Maxtor. Then the next problem occurred. The Maxtor did not support the Vault file. I think this is because the Maxtor is formatted in FAT 32 and as such it cannot accept files larger then 4 Gb. My Vault file is bigger then that so ….
I now have the following set up:
MBP with a Lacie firewire drive attached to it. On the Lacie I have all my pictures. Then I have another USB drive which I use for the Vault files. The Maxtor is used in the home network for the family to back up their files such as the iTunes library etc.

  • Time machine on a network drive

    The situation:
We have a Mac Pro with a Time Machine volume on an external drive that is  attached to a networked Mac. I don't think this is a very common scenario, but it works just fine over a gigabit network. We do not automount any drives on the networked machine but mount (or connect to) this remote machine manually whenever the Mac Pro in question is restarted (which is not often).
    The question:
Due to some renovation, we'd like to temporarily connect this external drive to the Mac Pro and mount the Time Machine Volume. Will Time Machine find the correct sparse bundle on the external drive, recognize it as an existing Time Machine backup and update that as long as needed. In other words, the external drive will have a different unix path name, but the sparse bundle will have the correct name.  And when the renovation is done, we will resume running Time Machine over the network, and I hope that Time Machine will again do the right thing.
I want to avoid having Time Machine's creating a new backup when the unix path changes.
    Thanks.

In the past Apple was not holding you hostage by requiring you to use a Time Capsule for network Time Machine backups. Search on Google for Time machine NAS OS X (or something like that) You will find a number of drives that were working with SL.
Now, they did change the file protocol in Lion, so some of the NAS servers won't work with Lion, at the moment. So long as it is a decent company that makes the NAS they should be releasing a firmware update to get their NAS working with Lion.
One of the companies that put out a press release was Western Digital. They said they would be working on an updated firmware so that you could use it as a Time Machine drive.
Just look around the interwebs and I am sure you will find several that will work.

  • Recover from FileVault sparse bundle?

My MacBook died but the hard drive is OK. I have it externally mounted (USB to SATA adapter) to a new MacBook Air and want to restore some recent files that hadn't yet been backed up, but the drive is FileVaulted. How do I open the sparse bundle from the external drive?

Thanks. That didn't seem to work for me, but this did in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool YES
Then press Command-Option-Esc and relaunch Finder. To have Finder keep hidden files hidden, in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool NO
Then press Command-Option-Esc and relaunch Finder.

  • Help!  Empty home folder, vanished sparse bundle, and now I can't log in -

I was trying to free up space on my MacBook Pro and looking into the biggest space-eaters on my hard drive, and ran across something huge called a sparse bundle. I did some research, and at first thought this was a backup of my home folder, and with space so tight decided to delete it, figuring I'd backup externally later. Luckily it wouldn't empty from trash, and I pulled it back onto my desktop. I then learned that it was my own user home folder compressed into a sparse bundle by File Vault. (Yikes!) I tried to return it to my user folder but couldn't. I thought that maybe if I turned off File Vault it would work, so I tried. Instead my account logged out and I got an alarming message saying I couldn't log back onto this account due to an error.
I tried to access my account from the outside, as a root user, and saw to my shock that my home folder is now completely empty. The last I saw the sparse bundle was sitting on my desktop - where is it? Was it somehow deleted? If so, is there any way to recover it? I didn't make a backup, stupid me. I've seen other forum postings but they're not quite on point- Any help would be hugely appreciated!!!

I don't use File Vault, but have experimented with it a bit.
Are you on Tiger or Leopard? You've posted in the Leopard forum, but your signature says you're running Tiger.
The reason I ask is, I understand File Vault is handled somewhat differently on Tiger vs. Leopard; if you're really on Tiger, you might do better in the Tiger forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=758
But I suspect nobody in the forums will be able to answer this one -- it's quite unusual. You're probably going to have to either make an appointment at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store, or call AppleCare.

  • Can I put Network Users on a sparse bundle disk image?

Hello! Can anyone out there help me figure out what seems to be a rather complicated feat?  I'm trying to get users to log in to client iMacs as if they were local accounts, but the user account information is stored on a sparse bundle disk image.
Long story short, I've currently got OS X Server running network user accounts tied to Active Directory.  When the users log in, they have a sparse bundle disk image that automatically mounts on their desktop.  This has been an effective solution for some of our software that doesn't play well with Network storage, as the sparse bundle is treated like local storage by the Macs.
However, what would be a much better solution for us is to actually have the whole user account stored on the disk image.  It's a little like the way FileVault 1 worked, except the disk image is actually stored on a network drive.  So far, as a proof-of-concept, I've been able to make this work manually: I've had to log in to a local admin user and then mount the user's sparse bundle with all their user folder contents contained within.  Then, once the user path is changed to point to the disk image, the user logs right in, everything works exactly as expected (once I got the permissions set correctly).  This method works exactly like a Network User account except that all the applications see it as local storage instead of network storage.
The trick, though, is automating this process.  I want a user to sit down in front of any iMac, log in and go straight to their account.  It would be nice if OS X Server was able to accommodate this with a setting, but it doesn't.  So, my plan so far has been to create a generic local account with a script on the desktop that users can open to login in.  The script would then mount the network share, then mount the sparse bundle disk image, then log the user in to their "local" account on the iMac.  When they log out, there's a login hook that restarts the machine.
So far, I'm stumbling over the fact that the sparse bundle unmount when logging out of the generic "login" account, preventing the user from logging in.  But if I leave the generic account logged in, then the loginhook to restart the computer doesn't work.
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.

  • Sparse Bundle Image Unmounts from External Drive (NTFS)

This is a duplicate of https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2135602?start=0&tstart=0 but the problem still exists in Mountain Lion. I have NTFS-3G ans FUSE for OSX installed to mount my external drive. I copied a sparse bundle image over to the drive. Now when I try to mount the drive it instantly unmounts. Disk Utility says it mounts Successfully, even though it unmounts. Can anyone help me figure out how I can mount the sparse bundle image while it lives on my external NTFS drive?

Not sure what you mean what sparsebundle?
I want to know what sparse bundle you are talking about.
the sparse bundle with your filevaulted home directory which was originally located in /users/yourusername? or some other sparse bundle?
I was using FileVault. Probably I may have put the trailing slash (can't remember as it was almost two weeks back).
The External HDD is FAT formatted drive. I haven't done any changes to permissions.
you should not be using a FAT drive for this. move everything over to an HFS+ formatted drive. and don't use a FAT drive for backing up OS X. FAT is an old file system which does not support many features needed by OS X.
so what you need to do is put all the stuff you listed (token, Info.plist, Info.bckup and the bands folder) into a folder and give that folder the name username.sparsebundle where username is your old username. then you need to add a bundle flag to that folder. you need setFile command for that. it's not a part of the basix OS X install. you can install XCode (it's on the SL install DVD) or use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ to install just the setFile command. then run the command
    setFile -a -B /path/to/unsername.sparsebundle
This will restore the bundle bit to it and it will look like an actual sparse bundle. you can then try mounting it by double-clicking it. you'll have to enter your old user password. if it works you are in luck and can reuse it. if it doesn't work it's most likely corrupt beyond repair and you should trash it. you can try fixing it first but it's almost never possible with corrupt encrypted sparse bundles. but try mounting it first and see if it simply mounts. post back with the results.
    Advance thanks for assistance.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro backup to Time Machine (on my 1TB Time Capsule) when I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.5.? What does it mean when this error pops up: MacBook Pro.sparse bundle could not be assessed (error - 1).???? Please help me fix this!

Apparently I am not the only person having this problem as I have seen many threads about it. If ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.
I try and run my backup as I always have, but it HAS NEVER COMPLETED SINCE I UPGRADED TO LION. As many mentions, I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 hoping that would fix my issue and it didn't help at all. I also unistalled WD SmartWare to no avail. It's really starting to annoy me since I have as much money invested in my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as I do in my car....
I have more than enough space on the Time Capsule, but Time Machine is still failing and coming up with an error message: MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be assessed (error - 1).
    Someone, anyone, please help!

  • Mapped network drive appears empty for all users on one computer

We have several network drives mapped via a batch file at log in.  On one particular Windows 7 computer one of these drives maps but appears empty.  Manually mapping to the drive and assigning a different drive letter makes no difference but manually
mapping by entering the IP address allows viewing and accessing the contents.
The malfunctioning network drive is also using Hosted BranchCache.  The following settings are set in local group policy:
    (\Network\BranchCache)
    Turn on BrancheCache - Enabled
Set BranchCache Hosted Cache Mode - Enabled - <servername>
Configure BranchCache for network files - Enabled - 0
The servers involved are running Windows Server 2012.
I am at a loss here and will appreciate any suggestions.
~JuniorG33k "Why is this thus? What is the reason for this thusness?"

With Offline Files disabled the contents of the mapped drive are visible and accessible.  Unfortunately, Offline Files must be enabled for BranchCache to work.
Looking in the Event Viewer at “Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\OfflineFiles\Operational” I can see that the mapped network drive transitioned to slow link during high latency but has never transitioned back.

  • Help please! Need to restore my OSX Midi Network driver!

Hello friends, this is the first time i write you guys here.
But heck, i've solved hundreds of problems just reading these boards for some years now!
So yeah, i have been a Touchdaw user for some months and everything went great until
a couple days ago it broke/froze up, even crashing my audio midi setup issue that i managed
to fix (thanks to you guys) by deleting some plist around.
But when i came back today, to set everything up again, i found that there's no NETWORK
icon on the audiomidi setup anymore.
Thing is i can't actually find a single post about this issue anywhere on the web
Someone said that deleting the "com.apple.midi.netsetup" file would restore everything
but..bingo, there's no such file where i believe it used to exist before the crash.
My guess is i need to restore this file somehow, or install a "midi network driver"??
I seriously need this to work again, all my midi instruments are in another room, now i can't
record as comfortable as it used to be with  the wireless network and it's making me lose a bunch of time!

I hope someone can help me! — Thanks in advance!!
    Please excuse my english,

    Hello Cheeky,
Unfortunately, i haven't found info about this issue and i had to move a couple keyboards into the control room.
I guess i'll have to reinstall my OS, but there's a lot of things that could go wrong...:( i don't know.
Everything would be cute again if the network thingy appeared :'(
