Sparsebundle file: how to recreate?

Very dears all,
I have browsed many discussions but none seems to meet my problem:
There is an iBook with a Lacie Disk (FW connected) for TimeMachine. Due to the big size of the Lacie Disk (350GB) I decided to also use TM for the MacBook. Then I used the FW plug to connect the Lacie to the MacBook and started TM. It finished OK.
I reconnected the iBook and the Lacie and TM is still going on OK.
Then, I stopped TM because the Lacie was not connected.
When I reconnected MacBook to Lacie, after starting TM, it was recovering the old back so I can enter TM and see the back up made on August 7th but if I start an immediate backup it does not re-connect to the old back up but it starts a new one (which cannot go on because the disk has not enough space).
I checked that any forum is talking about sparsebundle file in the TM drive (Lacie Disk, in my case), but I have no sparsebundle file for neither the MacBook not the iBook.
But the question is that on iBook the TM is backing up regularly.
I did not change my MAC address of the Ethernet port (if it may be useful).
I was also looking for the preferences file for TimeMachine, to check if there is any problem in the path for the driver to use for the backup, but I didn't found it.
Many thanks,
Carmine

Very dears all,
upgrading to 10.5.5 TimeMachine was able to recover the path of the driver/folder in the right way.
Many thanks,
Carmine

  • How can i delete a corrupted sparsebundle file

My TimeCapsule sparsebundle file is corrupt and cannot be opened by TimeMachine anymore. However I cannot delete it either, error message: "The process could not be completed as the object "bands" is in use." (my translation from my German original: "Der Vorgang konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, da das Objekt "bands" in Verwendung ist")
ANY IDEA HOW I CAN DELETE THAT SPARSEBUNDLE WITHOUT FORMATTING EVERYTHING?
Maybe you need the whole story to come up with some good ideas, this is how it came:
    - I bought a new 500GB TimeCapsule and tried to do a first backup. It ran the whole night through and wasnt done the next morning. However I had to leave to work and had to cancel it at 80% or so.
    - I tried it again on the weekend, but hat to cancel again after dozens of hours of slow backup without success. Finally the sparsebundle file had grown to several hundred GB and I thought I better delete it before trying to backup again.
    - Hence: I picked the file and delete, confirmed that it would be deleted straight away (without being moved to the basket before), it started deleting but stopped half way.
    - SO NOW: i can neither use the file through timemachine, nor get rid of the file to start timemachine again.
Thanks in advance for your ideas...

I tried downgrading the firmware back to 7.3 and that didn't work for me either, neither did resetting the Time Capsule.
It ended up that my sparsebundle was in indeed corrupted (for the 2nd time now) which is completely crazy to me!...
I did find out *WHY my sparsebundle kept getting corrupted*:
I learned that when time machine is turned on, if the computer goes to sleep, about 50% of the time, that will "corrupt" the sparsebundle!
What I had to do last night was delete my sparsebundle (again) and then do the dreaded, long "first backup" all over (overnight).
I made a point to go to the "*energy saver*" on my preferences to change the settings on it so that it wouldn't put the MacBook to sleep (both on the battery and power options) so that my sparsebundle won't get corrupted again!
This was really frustrating, and that little piece of information should be included with the Time Capsule for consumers so that they can avoid the frustrations that we've all apparently been having. I'm suprised at Apple, and a little disappointed in all of the time that I spent/lost dealing with the Time Machine and Time Capsule.
    Hope this helps :0l

  • How can I force Time Machine to use existing backup sparsebundle files?

I backed up both my OSX Mountain Lion MBP and MacOSX Snow Leopard iMac to the same USB Disk. I then plugged this USB Disk into my Time Capsule, and configured Time Machine in both macs to use it through the network. But Time Machine insists on creating new backup sparsebundle files, ignoring the existing ones. How can I force Time Machine to use the existing backups.backupdb sparsebundle files instead of creating new ones?

How can I force Time Machine to use the existing backups.backupdb sparsebundle files instead of creating new ones?
You can't. Time Machine works differently over a network than it does with a locally-attached drive. What you could do is delete the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume, which contains the backups you made via USB. You should then be able to backup to the same sparsebundle locally and over the network. But I wouldn't recommend doing that. Certainly don't do it unless you have at least one other complete backup (which you should have anyway.)

  • How to restore a file inside an encrypted sparsebundle file saved in time machine

    Hi,
On Mac OS X 10.6.6, I use an encrypted sparsebundle file to save sensitive corporate files (not using the Filevault built-in feature), mounting it and using it as a folder.
The sparse bundle is in my Documents folder which is part of my Time Machine backup.
Unfortunately, timemachine doesn't actually see what's inside the sparsebundle file and can't restore only one of the files from it.
I always have to restore the full sparsebundle, which is 34G as of now...
Is there a way to let timemachine index and store the content of the encrypted sparsebundle, without compromising the confidentiality of course?
What other completely different solution should I use otherwise?
    Thanks.

everytime it says it can't be mounted the reason being "no mountable filesystem"

Not a good sign.  That's the message OSX sends when a disk image is corrupted.    Can you restore the whole thing, and still see the contents?
It seems an external drive or partitioning the drive would be required, unless using sparsebundle files would do the same.
A separate drive or partition, each with different passwords, would probably work.
side question, it seems TM saved the entire modified files and not only the modified blocks. Does it behave the same for sparsebundles? it doesn't seem to copy my 34G file everytime.
Do you have a "sparse disk image" or a "sparse bundle disk image"?   As I understand it, Time Machine saves the entire contents of a sparse disk image if anything's changed, but only the modified "bands" of a sparse bundle disk image (but only when they're not mounted).
If you use an encrypted HD or partition, it should work normally -- just saving the individual files that are changed, and allowing you to view and restore individual items.

  • Is it possible to use a sparsebundle file on a locally attached disk?

I'm using a basic Drobo to store all my media (iTunes, iMove Events etc.) and would also like to use it for Time Machine, without Time Machine claiming all of the available space therein.
Partitioning the Drobo is pretty much out of the question, I tried it, but it breaks a good deal of Drobo's useful features (namely its ability to warn me when the drive is getting full).
I been playing around creating a 1TB sparsebundle file, which I then copied to the Drobo volume, but whether I mount it or not, Time Machine cannot (will not) see it. I've tried selecting it in Time Machine preferences and also by Option-clicking on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar. Is this because Time Machine will only recognise sparsebundle files mounted over a network?
Is there something else I could try, besides sparsebundles and partitioning, to limit the space Time Machine consumes? Is there a way, for example, to automatically delete old backups?

    m0thr4 wrote:
I wonder how the manual delete facility in the Time Machine UI works then... and if it's possible to write a shell script that does the same thing?
I have a feeling that's far more involved than it sounds. The backups have a complex structure, with hard links at both the file and folder level. Just how Time Machine manages to delete the right things is, I suspect, rather complex, too.
I don't know exactly how it's done, but I suspect there are circumstances where more has to be done than just delete a dated backup folder and all it's hard links. Some hard links that were at the folder level may have to be re-constructed for the remaining backups, at the file level.
Then there's the issue of permissions, extended attributes, and other metadata. The permissions are stored differently than on a "real" file, so the actual backup files (hard links) can have those "deny everybody everything" permissions, presumably so us mere mortals won't try to fool with them.
While I doubt deleting that way would corrupt the backups, you might well leave "loose" files containing permissions and possibly other things as well, which might eventually cause problems and take up a fair amount of space on the drive.
Last, they do something fancy with the dated folders themselves; when the time zone changes, all the backup folder names change accordingly. What's more curious is, if you start a full restore, without OSX on your internal HD, so Time Machine doesn't know what time zone it's in, the list of backups will be shown in *U.S. Pacific Time.*
Those are just the possible "gotchas" I can think of offhand . . .

  • How to Recreate DashboardBuilder IMT Analytics for Use in BI workspaces 4.x

    Hi,
With the conversion of the SAP BusinessObjects Dashboard Builder product to SAP BusinessObjects BI workspaces, support for the universal-based visualization analytics was removed. The list of available analytics was eliminated from the module library, thereby disallowing the creation of analytics directly in BI workspaces.
As a result, analytics created previously in Dashboard Builder can be opened in BI workspaces, but they are not displayed, instead the user will see an information message.
The solution to this change is to recreate the required analytics in other SAP BusinessObjects tools, such as SAP BusinessObjects Dashboard Design or SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence. You can then substitute the new analytics for the objects created previously in Dashboard Builder.
The following article describe [How to Recreate Dashboard Builder IMT Analytics for Use in BI workspaces 4.x|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/00c4e111-ef52-2e10-75a6-8d7978bd2581]

Thanks, I am able to set the java path in windows environment and able to execute the jar command. It created a analytics2.ear file but when i try to deploy from the weblogic console it gives the following error..
[J2EE:160120]Error: The module, 'analytics.war', is declared either in the application.xml or in the weblogic-application.xml descriptor but cannot be found in the ear file.
Trying to research on the above. Any inputs are appreciated. I have the following files in my directory
    1. analytics2.war
    2.analytics2-ws.war
    3. META-INF
They are in Analytics_war directory of windows. I am not able to use
    jar -cf analytics.war -C app .
as it gives me an error that 'app\. folder does not exits. Replaced with Analytics_war assuming that it is looking to write the file to app folder still it did not work.

  • How to recreate sample basic

    Hi
We deleted sample basic after we installed Essbase (11.1.1.3). Now some users want to have sample basic available to practice. Do anyone know how to recreate sample basic in Essbase?
    Thanks

opening the zip file it looks like all of the files are there. So from EAS create the Sample application (BSO non unicode) and then create the database Basic. Stop the application then copy all of the files in the zip into the basic directory on the server (pathing may vary based on what version you are using) but there should be an app\sample\basic directory. Then start the app and you should be good to go

  • Is there a way to switch to a different sparsebundle file in Time Machine?

I needed to reset my Time Capsule. When I started doing a Time Machine backup, it created a new sparsebundle file. I now have two. The old one can mount on my desktop and I can see that it has all my previous backup files. But I can't figure out how to switch to it so that I can access all the older backups through Time Machine (as opposed to just today's). Change Disk doesn't work. I also tried changing the file name, but that didn't work, either.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Photos taken on the iPad will always be synced with iTunes along with contacts, bookmarks and notes created on the iPad.  However, if you have synced this iPad with a different computer which has transfered its photos to iPad, a different iTunes will not transfer or backup these to the new computer. Same goes with music which has not been purchased in iTunes but synced from another computer, such as ripped CD's.
Apple assumes your using one iTunes to sync with multiple devices. Not the other way around. This is the advantage of iCloud, as long as your using the one apple ID you can sync from the cloud to multiple devices without being tethered to one machine.
But if you have synced this iPad with a different iTunes or computer and have put iTunes Purchased music onto it, then you will get a warning like the one below, giving you the option of syncing this music into the current iTunes if the computer is authorised with the same apple ID... In other words; if your using the same apple ID on two different computers to make iTunes purchases.
Once again, Apple assumes your using one Apple ID and not mixing and matching with another persons account. If you would like to share music which is not purchased through iTunes you are free to do so, but you cannot use a regular "iPad sync with iTunes" as the conduit to do so, you should use a hard drive or even an iPod in Disk Use Mode to merge iTunes content from one computer onto you primary apple computer for syncing.
For more information about how to transfer all music content from one computer to another click here
For more information about transfering purchased music using iOS devices click here.
I hope that isn't too much to process. Feel free to ask any more questions :]

How to recreate those? I can't find anything on this topic for arch.
I can make them using mkdir but that won't for example in future place Chromium downlaods in it (at least i think so).

Thanks a lot! I needed to create them manually and change ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs variables to those folders.
    @karol
I used sass --watch to compile my .scss files, and sass created ~ folder in my project (I have no idea why). After that i was trying to delete that damned folder using rm -r ~ and that deleted my real ~ folder. I was in project folder i don't know why it deleted home.
Thanks guys you saved me, I was about to reinstall arch !

  • How to recreate INST_TOP ?

    Hi ,
Our env config details are below
    EBS : R12.1.1
    OS: Sun Sparc
    DB : 10g R2
Its a 2 node Apps Tier using Shared Appl Top and a 2 node RAC DB . PCP is configured.
    Problem:
In one of the apps Tier node ( Node1) $INST_TOP directory, files and its sub-directories got deleted because of some issue but we still have all the entries of this node in the database intact. Is there a way to recreate $INST_TOP ? Does this need something like adding a new node or do we have some other option to recreate it ?
Please let me know if you have come across such an issue .
Note:* One option is to restore the filesystem from the backup and we are progressing that but would like to know how to recreate $INST_TOP.
    Thanks ,
    Sasi

    Hi,
Apart from restoring the file from a backup, you can either run preclone and postclone on this node and this will recreate $INST_TOP for you -- Cloning Oracle Applications Release 12 with Rapid Clone [ID 406982.1]
Or, you could retrieve the context file and run AutoConfig -- Using AutoConfig to Manage System Configurations in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 [ID 387859.1]

  • I'm in BIG trouble - Deleted a SparseBundle File

I'm hoping someone can help me out of the dog house on this one.
My Wife's timecapsule ran out of room to backup her current laptop. So in a flash of genius, I thought I would delete old backup data. One of which was a SparseBundle file for an old Mac-Mini she had that had years of emails and pictures in it. I was able to simply delete the file, but it did not go to the trash on laptop (I guess because of the Time Capsule being Network connected).
I'm in serious hot water here and need a way to "undelete" the files.
I tried Data Recovery 3, but it only see's physically attached drives, not mounted volumes. I currently downloaded a trial program from fileundelete.net.
I'm afraid that unless I can connect the TimeCapsule physically to a MAC, I'm hosed.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to "undelete" the file, or connect to the TimeCapsule HDD physically?
    Many Many Thanks!

Unfortunately, the file is probably gone.
If it is retrievable, you will need to go directly into the drive. This means that the drive must be pulled from the Time Capsule and placed in an enclosure, just to see if the software program can retrieve the information. That's a big "IF".
I haven't tried this, (pulling the drive will void the warranty on the Time Capsule), so I can't predict what your chances of success may be. Perhaps some other users could help in this regard.

  • Size limit of 16TiB to sparsebundle files?

I manage several servers with higher disk volumes. Some use OsX.
At one particular customer, the OsX 10.7.5 fileserver has 21TB available and the OsX 10.8.4 backupserver has 25TB. Using TimeMachine we stumbled across an apparent size limit of 16TiB (17.59TB) for sparsebundle files. Whenever we try to expand the sparsebundle beyond that size, we receive error messages about exceeding `the´ size limit.
Which one? I found no information regarding such limitations. AFAIK, a sparsebundle is a virtual "Mac OS Extended" filesystem [partition in a virtual disk], which should be able to grow up to 8EiB since OsX 10.4 and the sparsebundle itself resides on a filesystem of that type also. So it's size limit should be 8EiB too. I see no reason, why a sparsebundle should have limits far less.
How can I create (resize) sparsebundles to, say, 20TB?

If there's a fixed limit to the size of an OS X disk image, it's not publicly documented anywhere that I know of. That doesn't mean there is no limit. Your customer may be the first person in history to have tried to create one that large. He should be mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records.
