Sparseimage???

After installing Leopard I now have a sparseimage of my old system. How do I transfer all data to Leopard from Tiger?

By sparseimage I believe you mean that your backup (presumable on an external HD) is not a full realtime clone but rather an incremental backup. That means that each original file is associated with updates and not a complete file. Ouch! Not terrible, but time consuming since you have to put the files backtogether on a different OS.

I hope that helps. You probably have lost nothing. But in the future, when installing a new OS, always do a full backup, preferably a bootable clone.
Good Luck and let us know how it went.

  • Time Machine No Longer Finds Mounted Sparseimages after upgrade to 10.6

Wondering if anyone has a solution or workaround for the following. In Leopard I had no problem having Time Machine backup my mounted sparseimage drives and would exclude the physical hard drives these were mounted on. However, since upgrading to Snow Leopard the other day, Time Machine no longer includes the content of the sparseimage drives in the backup (it is not seeing them even when they are mounted). Presents a problem as I only want Time Machine to backup the files within the sparseimage drives that have changed, rather than backing up the whole sparseimage each time. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Since I have updated to 10.6.1 (over 10.5.8), my time machine only returns error messages. I am backing up 3 computers on 2 disks via airport extreme and it worked perfectly under 10.5.8. Since I upgraded to 10.6.1, I cant mount the disk or if it does, stops after 5 gig.

  • Need help restoring from a SilverKeeper .sparseimage file

Before upgrading a MacBook from Leopard to Snow Leopard I used SilverKeeper to backup the hard drive, sending the data to a .sparseimage file. I'm now trying to restore - or expand/extract - the .sparseimage file to an external hard drive so I can move my documents and files to the freshly-installed OS. I've tried creating a Restore Set in SilverKeeper, setting the Destination as the .sparseimage backup file and the Source as the external hard drive mount, but this operation just results in a copy of the .sparseimage file being created in a new folder on the external drive; the files saved in the original backup are not extracted to the external drive. I'm trying this process because even though mounting the .sparseimage backup in OSX will allow me to browse the file system, the files in the user folder are not visible (and they're not just hidden). And this despite the fact that the original backup operation completed successfully and created a sparseimage file of 122GB - the same size as the used space on the original drive. Any help getting the files back out of this .sparseimage file would be tremendous. Thanks!

Thanks for the thoughts, Kappy. I have contacted LaCie as well; just waiting to hear back. <fingers crossed> Since it doesn't directly bring LaCie any revenue, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask around here as well since I got it from Apple: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/silverkeeper.html
For some reason when you do a restore set with SilverKeeper the destination has to be the location of your (previous) backup, and the source has to be the location you want to send the restore to. Believe me, it doesn't make much sense to me either; I guess the idea is that you're sending a previous backup back to the source.
As I mentioned, I can mount the image and browse it in Finder, but I can't access the files I need. I did get an 'alias not found' message (or something like that) at one point but am not seeing that at the moment. As far as I know the file is not encrypted; at least I haven't been prompted for a key/password.
I didn't have access to a big enough spare drive at the time I was making this backup and so had to resort to creating an image file that I could send to a network share. I probably will pass on SilverKeeper in the future, but it seemed like a good bet at the time...

  • An corrupted EFTFile1.sparseimage has appeared on my iMac but cannot deleted

Hello guys! I need real hands-on practical help here, please.
I have already asked for help in here but didn't manage to get clear step by step help. Only got confusing redirection to other posts and very technical advice which really confuses me.
First of all, I have an iMac8,1 with Snow Leopard 10.6.7. Memory 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, and before the problem occured I had about 260-270 of free GB out of more than 300 GB.
I have discovered that my recycling bin contained a folder Recovered Files with a file EFTFile1.sparseimage. I only noticed it when I tried to Secure Empty the  Trash after running the tool Secure Delete Free Space from Internet Cleanup by SmithMicro (I don't know if this might be the cause of the problem).
When I got to deleting stuff from the Trush I noticed it was taking too long, so I decided to transfer the various files out of the trush and delete them individually. When I reached the EFTFile1.sparseimage I discovered this was about 261 GB in size - when I tried opening it, it said the following:
The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason: corrupt image
After reading some online forums, I understand now that by deleting this sparseimage file I should be able to recover the free space. Some people suggested to use Terminal. Their instructions have been very confusing and also when I attempted once in Terminal, before submitting anything, a warning said I might loose important files. So, I stayed well away!!!
I want to stress, this EFTFile1.sparseimage isn't something I created (some forums have mentioned the possibility that some people may have done that for other purposes). The file appeared on my mac by itself. I guess, after using the SmithMicro free space delete?!
If anyone has the patience and knows of a real solution for this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.
    Cheers guys!

This is just a guess, but that file may be part of the mechanism that Internet Cleanup uses to erase the free space.  It might allocate a very large file, write erase patterns to that file, then (if allowed to complete), delete that file.  Since you didn't let it complete, that file remained.
To delete that file in a Terminal session, launch Terminal, then type this command, including a trailing space, without pressing the <return> key:
    sudo rm -i
Then open the trash and drag that sparseimage file into the Terminal window.  You should now see the full path of that file following the space after the "-i" switch.  Now switch to the Terminal window and press <return>.  First you'll be prompted for your administrative password.  Type it and press <return>.  Next you'll be asked if you want to delete the sparseimage file.  Verify that it's the right file, then press <return>.  That should do it.
To terminal the Terminal session gracefully, type "exit" (without the quotes), press <return>, then quit Terminal.

  • How do I change the password of a sparseimage?

I searched for an answer to this question, but the information I found was out of date. Apparently there used to be a "Change password" item in the "Images" menu of Disk Utility. Now (under Mac OS 10.7, a.k.a. Lion) it seems there's just a "Change" menu, and when I try to make changes, it tries to make a new image rather than simply changing the password. The sparseimage file I want to make the change to is massive (410 GB), and I don't have room (not to mention time) on any other disks to make another copy. It seems odd that one wouldn't be able to change the password fairly easily. Thanks for any help you can offer.

i just had these question too, and i just find out how to do it on mountain lion, just go to utility disk, and select the desire sparceimage from the side bar, ( if you have the disk image open you need to exit first, or you wont be able to select the change password option,  on disk utility   top menu, go to > file> change password - after that you just select the sparseimage and change the password.
if disk image is mounted it wont work,

  • Timemachine doesn't create sparseimage

Hi, i have a macpro with 10.5.4 just installed, and a time capsule. My imac does backup fine, but the macpro give this error in console:
Jul 30 09:19:42 localhost /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[147]: Network volume mounted at: /Volumes/Backups

the strange thing is that it doesn't try to create a classic sparseimage like /Volumes/Backups/userx_xxxxxxx.sparsebundle but only /Volumes/Backups, maybe this is the problem, but how i can fix it?

  • FileVault/Sparseimage how do I change the directory?

After I repaired permissions from the OS X.3.5 disk I decided to see what would happen when I tried to change the password on my FileVault account. To my surprise it did change the password without any warning, but what happened was a new non-filevault, admin, account was created with the same user name and a sparseimage of the FileVault was placed inside that account along with the Documents, Library, Movies, etc. folders. I can open the sparseimage and all the data is there, but I would like the FileVault image to open as my account. How do I get the system to recognize the sparseimage. I have tried using NetInfo Manager to go to Users>Me and checking the home_loc file but that is fine. I used Disk Utility and dragged the sparseimage into the left side of DU and did the repair thing, but when I log into the user account it is just the new account with the old name and not the old FileVault account. Is there a way to get the sparseimage recognized so I can start up from it? Is there something else in NetInfo I can change. I have a backup of the data, but I would like to try and fix this without going to the old data. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you give me terminal commands please just type them the way they are to be entered without quotation marks.
Thank you ahead of time for your help!!

  • Help with sharing/networking an encrypted sparseimage on a LAN

I have 4 macs on an ethernet/Airport LAN, one running Lion and 3 running 10.6.8. I have an encrypted sparseimage in a 10.6.8 MBPro which I want the other computers to open and access over the LAN. When the image is mounted on one computer the others will get a message that it cannot be shared now. If I dismount it I can open it on a remote computer. I can see it on only 1 computer at a time. I have marked the mounted image and marked it shared and have even tried changing permissions for everyone to read and write.
I had this image on a machine running Tiger and did not have this problem. The mounted birtual drive could be mounted on all the computers at the same time.
The actual file exists on a User who is not an admin. I have tried putting the sparseimage in her public folder and in the Users/Shared folder without help.
    What am I doing wrong?
    TIA,
    Bill

No - not now. You set them up with different Apple ID's. If you had set them up with the same Apple ID from the start - you could share all of the purchased apps across as many iPads as you like. The apps purchase are tied to that Apple ID and iTunes account. So if you buy App "A" for one iPad - you can't share it twith the second iPad because that iPad is linked to a different Apple ID.
can I set up one Apple ID and use both iPads for that Apple ID?  If I do set up an Apple ID for both iPads to share, will I lose all the apps on both computers, or is there someway to save apps from both iPads and then download them later?
Yes you can set up one ID and use it on both. Yes you will lose the apps from if you create a third ID.

  • Always backs up sparseimage on shared folder

I have recently set up Time Capsule as my Time Machine back up and the first back up, while taking a little while, worked fine.
However every time it backs up it does 20gb of back ups. Using Time Tracker, I found it is the sparseimage on my Users/Shared file that contains my iPhoto library. I have my library set up this way to share among multiple accounts and it is set up to mount for every user as per this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
When I exclude the sparseimage from Time Machine back ups it goes back to normal small backups. Now I realise any change to a sparseimage will back up the entire image but since I have set up Time Capsule I have not even accessed iPhoto. And of course if its excluded its not being backed up.
I don't think its a Time Capsule issue but I can't recall this happening when I had my USB connected hard drive that I used to use for Time Machine back ups.
Can someone offer any advice as to how best to get round this issue (i.e. not full sparse image back up every time) while at the same time allowing the iPhoto library to be shared amongst users.
    Many thanks...

I've not done this, but I think what you need is a +sparse bundle disk image,+ not a +sparse disk image.+
The difference is, the sparse bundle disk image is divided into 8 mb "bands." Only the bands that changed will be backed-up, not the whole thing.
Another difference is, when you set a size for a sparse bundle, it's a maximum. The actual size will be only what you put inside it, and it can grow until it reaches the maximum.
But when you delete things from it, it won't shrink automatically. You have to use a special command via Terminal to shrink it.
Try creating a +sparse bundle disk image+ and copying some or all of your photos into it.

  • What's with Sparseimage Size?

I currently have a sparseimage in my Macintosh HD that has the contents of a corrupted user ID. I have changed the permissions and I can get to files and have been moving off the photos and music files to an external hard drive.
I thought that after moving and deleting those files in the sparseimage, I would see a jump in available space on my Mactintosh HD (these files came to about 8 GB), but even after emptying my trash, the available space has remained the same. What is going on? I'm thinking the sparseimage size was determined at the time it was created and that removing files does not change the amount of space it takes up. Is this so?
Once I move the files I want to keep, I will then have the option of deleting the sparseimage altogether. Will this allow me to recover that space?

    Hi mark,
Your comment was very insightful. I suspect the reason the sparseimage is not shrinking is that I am unable to access it through the user ID with which it was created. I do recall that when I would log out in the past, File Vault would ask if I wanted to recover the space, which I usually did. Now that I am unable to do that due to the corrupted ID, even though the files have been removed, the space remains the same. One ancillary question: If I am not using File Vault, is that space reclaimed as soon as the file is deleted and trash emptied?
I will use the hdiutil you mentioned until I am prepared to delete the sparseimage altogether.

  • Sparseimage Fails Verification with Invalid Key Length error.

I recently have been having some trouble with my computer. Every time I log out of my account, all of my preferences reset. This just now started happening. It was working fine, then all of a sudden it started to do this. This only happens on my account and doesnt with the root account. On looking up solutions, I discovered that I should verify my home directory image. I logged in as a different user (root) and used disk utility to verify it. However it failed saying "invalid key length" and "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit". When I try to repair it, it gives me the same error. I backed up my system using superduper to an external drive a while back and verified the sparseimage file that I backed up. It failed with the same error.
When I verify my harddrive it passes with no problem. Only my sparseimage file is corrupted. I would try diskwarrior but I cant afford it right now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   100gb hd; 1gb ram; Triple-Boot(OSX-Linux-Vista)

Would that mean that I can't turn off filevault? Way I see it is that since the image file is corrupted, I would try to have filevault unencrypt it and see if it somehow fixes it. (Since there will be no longer a filevaut image to be corrupted). All of my data in the image file seems to be fine. Everything is still there and I can access everything.
I was also thinking that I might be able to just copy everything in the image to my external, then deleting the account and create a new one, coping everything back over when im done.
I know I probably sound like a noob, but im really not. Ive had a lot of experience with my computer, just not this sorta thing. Thanks for your help.

  • Corrupt Encrypted Sparseimage, PrivateFrameworks and Kernel Panics

    Hi Maclovers,
After a kernel panic my encrypted sparseimage with valuable data won't mount:
    # hdiutil attach sec3.bak.sparseimage
hdiutil: attach failed - Defektes Image // german for 'corrupt image'
    Attaching the following string:

Okay, no problem I thought, Mac OS X builds on Open Source Software, so I can decrypt the sparseimage by hand (with perl) and rescue the needed data with a hexeditor.
But, the DiskImages Framework (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/DiskImages) is not Open Source
From poking around with gdb and strings I learned that hdiutil uses sha,sha1,sha256,sha512 and md5. But I was unable to figure out
    - how the password is expanded for the 128 bit aes key (plain md5/sha0,1,256,512 won't work)
    - in which mode aes runs (ecb/cbc/ofb)
Do you know it and can you give me a hint?

  • Corrupt sparseimage file (not same old Filevault issue)

I'm having a problem -- I have a corrupt Sparseimage file, but none of the solutions that others have proposed have worked.
No matter what I try, it keeps getting reported as corrupt.
For example, the "half mount" tip that others have used to recover things:
    $ sudo hdid -nomount SecureSparse.sparseimage
    Password:
hdid: attach failed - corrupt image
That's all I can get. Launching it in the finder gives me the same thing, only in a dialog box.
Trying to verify or repair it in Disk Utility does the same.
The most verbose response I've gotten out of any utility is this:
    $ hdiutil convert -format UDZO -verbose -o disk.dmg SecureSparse.sparseimage
    hdiutil: convert: processing "SecureSparse.sparseimage"

I am somewhat desperate here. I have several backups of this sparse file, but they are ALL CORRUPTED IDENTICALLY. (My machine syncs to the backup server every night, and apparently it synced after the corruption happened, and clobbered the un-corrupted version.)
Does anyone have any idea how to interpret the above messages? I'd be interested in just knowing why this happened for a start, and in what way the file is corrupted...I'm willing to invest significant resources in recovering the data.
Most of the recovery utilities I've seen will only work if Mac OS X will partially mount the image, and that isn't the case here.

  • Sparseimage says not enough room to move items, even when there is

Hi. I've created and used sparseimages successfully in the past for storing content that I want to be kept secure. Today though, I created a new sparseimage of 20GB using Disk Utility. When I tried to move files into it that were much smaller than 20GB (like 4GB), it wouldn't let me move them into the new sparseimage, and instead told me that there wasn't enough free space. This has never happened to me before, and I'm not sure why an empty sparseimage, created to hold up to 20GB, won't let me transfer files into it. I have 23 GB remaining on my hard drive in general, so it shouldn't be a problem of not enough space to make the copy. Thanks for any advice!

It would appear that you need much more free space on your Boot volume then, even if you have plenty of space on the external for the DMG, the boot drive will still need space to use for VM & Temp files for making it on the external Drive.
You're in danger of corrupting the Internal drive with that little space, not to mention the great speed reduction.
In a pinch, there are ways to set VM to use an external drive, but I don't recommend it.

  • Converting sparseimage to sparsebundle

Does anyone know how to do this?
I tried using hdiutil with the following command:
hdiutil convert /Volumes/"Time Capsule HD"/iMacC2DTMBkp.sparseimage -format UDSB iMacC2DTMBkp.sparsebundle
and got back the following error msg.
    "hdiutil[76355:10b] Error loading /Users/wesgaige/Library/Plug-ins/DiskImages/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin.bundle/Con tents/MacOS/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin: dlopen(/Users/wesgaige/Library/Plug-ins/DiskImages/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin.bun dle/Contents/MacOS/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:

hdiutil: convert: only a single input file can be specified"
I appear to be missing something called "dlopen". Where can I get it?

I do not know what you mean by "escape the space with a \". I only dabble in command line.
But I did put the whole path in quotes and tried. Got the same error message.
