SPDI/F passthrough to an external decoder

Hi fellas, I have an Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value which I have always used in the proprietary shit called microsoft with this useful tool called spdif passthrough, which bypassed e.g. DTS or Dolby digital 5.1 to my decoder (it does not support analog connection) ever since I've had linux (wow, that's a long time!!) I sufficed with just 2.0 sound on my 5.1 system but now I feel like improving that. I have read this: http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/.asoundrc and thought of it's use in my case. Please help me, I might not understand the use quite well and maybe this is not the right way but I have said to myself that I would deal with this problem. Thank you...

AC3 and DTS passthough works great here with both mplayer and VLC, you can find the options needed to enable it in each player's GUI settings.
So if you have IEC958 entries in alsamixer, you should unmute them and set the source as "PCM". Make sure you read this in case it does not work:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALS … s_not_work
Now if your audio card supports it you will not only passthrough AC3 but also hear all the sounds (mp3s from example) from the optical output. (you may have to configure your DE for all apps to work though)

• Inpsire 5.1 Digital 5500 external Decoder won't turn back on

Inpsire 5.1 Digital 5500 external Decoder won't turn back on? I bought a Creative Inpsire 5.1 Digital 5500 sound system form them back on febuary of 07. It has worked well for a about almost the last two years now. About three months ago though the external decoder began randomly turing itself off and would not come back on when the power button is pressed or when the remote is used to try and turn it on. It would only do this sometimes, but the problem has been becoming worse and worse over time. I thought at first maybe it was overheating, but that is not the problem. I have let it cool for hours, but it still won't come back on all the time. It only seems to come back on at random. I have to sit there and keep pressing the power button hundreds of times until it finally comes back on. It isn't even coming back on at all anymore now. It is out of warranty of course. Things always become faulty just a few months after being out of warranty it seems like. Just wondering if anybody else is having this sort of problem and if anyone knows exactly what is wrong with the decoders hardware and if it can be fixed. I have electronic experience if bad parts just need to be replaced on its board. Thanks.

Solved by using safe boot.  Please delete this thread or move to 'cinema display' forum.

There's a digital output on the card itself. 'tis the farthest one from the motherboard I beli've.
What you erally need is a cable like t his one:
http://www.needledoctor.com/Sony-RK-...=2&category=92
Plug the mini-plug end into the soundcard and one of the outputs ( the left channel I believe ) will have the digital output.
You will only get surround sound via the decoder if when playing back pre-encoded DD/DTS content like DVDs. Games and stuff will playback in stereo when connected digitally as SPDIF only supports compressed multi-channel bitstreams or uncompressed 2 channel audio. No Creative card at present offers real time DD/DTS encoding ( there're other cards which do which support Dolby Digital Li've! or DTS Connect. ) Creative have a DTS encoder called the DTS-60 which can take analogue signals from the soundcard ( stereo mini-plug x 3 ) and encode it to DTS for output via a coaxial or optical SPDIF in real time. I've never used the DTS-60 and can't comment on how good it is. Also note that the Audigy 2 ZS has weak bass redirection if using the DTS-60 and the 60 lacks bass redirection of its own so you could very well end up with a 'bass-less' signal if you're connecting to small speakers, unless your decoder has volume controls for the subwoofer.Message Edited by nvidiot on 09-27-2006 0:32 PM

• Internal or external decodi

Does the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Li've! 24-bit External USB Sound Card have internal or external decoding?
Does the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI Sound Card have internal or external decoding?

pjc wrote:
The Li've! 24-bit doesn't support Dolby Digital, but the Audigy 2 ZS does. External decoding is where you use an external digital reciever that is not part of the computer, such as the Creative DDTS-00. With the Audigy 2, the decoding is done by the computer, however you can still use an external decoder if you wish.
I want to play Battlefield 2 in full surround, play music, and watch Divx and DVD's in surround from my PC. If I have an Audigy 2 sound card (does this have DD Li've?), will I be able to connect to my Yamaha receiver just through SPDIF for all of the things I mentioned above and will they be in surround? Can I connect some desktop speakers too so that I don't have to go through the receiver for sound in case someone is watching TV on my projector and speaker system? Thanks for the help.

• X-Fi + External Decoder: Best connection set

Hi,
was wondering how to connect my X-fi Xtrememusic to my 7. Digital Recei'ver. Currently I'm using the digital out on the x-fi and the digital in on the receiver, but I've heard rumours that you don't get true 7. from the digital out and that you get a better result from using the analogue outputs from the X-Fi by using a special cable, like the Home Cinema Cable

Are there any better solutions? What's the *best* solution out there?
Oh, and if anyone know how long that Home Cinema Cable is, then that would be nice info to know

No, you can not get 7. PCM out of the SPDIF connector (You can get: Dolby Digital EX or DTS ES passthrough). SPDIF out(Digital PCM stream) is just 2 channels. However, depending on your receiver, you can use processing formats such as Dolby Prologic IIx (DPL IIx) or Logic 7 (Logic 7 ,If you have an Harman Kardon or a Lexicon receiver) to expand the stereo signal to 7..
Again, I don't recommend the analog out connection, unless the DAC on your receiver are very bad in comparison to the X-Fi DAC.

• Sound blaster live 24 bit ac3 passthro

I can not find a way to select ac3 passthrough. I need this so when I play dvds,my surround sound receiver will decode the ac3 instead of my sound card. One would think that creative would been a little more creative & made this a little easier. Can anyone help please?

stephen302000,
The Li've 24 bit sound card does not have inbulit AC3 decoder. It already have all the AC3 signal bypassed. You should check the DVD playback software for such option to have the AC3 passthrough to the external decoder.

• X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatality and external deco

Hello. I have problems with my X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatality. I connect the sound car to a external Denon decoder?with a RCA Coxial cable. I listen the sounds of computer, but i don?t have dolby or dts sound. In DVD sound in DOLBY ok using Power DVD for example. But, in HD avis for example with AC3, the decoder don?t detect the 5. sound. Looking in Creative online Help I view thar the Creative Console have a option of Dolby and DTS where i can put the mode passthrough to use a external decode, but in my creative consolo this option don?t appear. I probe to uninstall and install again the drivers but don?t work. What happen? How I can resolve??p.d: Sorry for my english, but I don?t speak english. Sorry to hear of your problem, the same thing happened to me when I made the mistake of downloading a "new" driver from the Microsoft Update Website. It was not the proper driver for our soundcard and changed registry settings that shut off the S/PDIF output.
The Problem--this model soundcard does not use hardware to process Dolby Digital or DTS. That is why you are getting Dolby Digital and DTS when you use Cyberlink DVD, the Cyberlink program is decoding it using software.
The Solution--My Digital (S/PDIF) out to external processor worked fine until the Microsoft Update incident.
I shall presume that your problems are also driver related. I tried going back to a restore point...no good.
I tried erasing all remnants of the soundcard driver, and reinstalling from the original CD ROM...no good.
I then entered the registry, and using the search function found all entries which contained the letters S/PDIF, I then looked for those that were shut off (0) and switched them on (). Unfortunately I did all of them at once, so I do not know for sure which ones need to be turned on. However, the good news is then the external processor showed it was receiving raw Dolby Digital and DTS signals.
My Advice--Try going back to a restore point first, if unsuccessful, follow by the deletion of all Soundblaster drivers and reload using your original Soundblaster CD ROM, lastly, if nothing else worked, and you know your way around the registry, use my solution. Important Note--If you are not familiar with the registry--DO NOT MONKEY WITH IT. You could cause much greater problems than you already have.
However, as with all things regarding computers, what worked for me may not work for you. If your sound card never outputted raw Dolby Digital and DTS signals, than perhaps it is a hardware defect. In my case, everything worked until that dog gone Microsoft put that (new) driver out. I will never again use any hardware drivers posted on Microsoft Update. I might suggest going back and reading through the older post on this website, this problem came up right after the Microsoft incident, it was unfortunate that I did not see the post before performing the destructi've download. I hope this information helps in some way.
Good Luck!

• Decoding a DTS file with X-fi xtreme mu

Hello, I got some .DTS files
I want to use the internal decoder of the X-fi xtreme music to decode it but I hear nothing. I have to use software decode, like VLC Media player, but.. **bleep**! I want the X-fi decoder to work with these files...
You know what program should I use to liste this files decoded with the internal DTS decoder of the X-FI?
thank you.

Ok, I've read the thread you mentioned and I have been able to send a .DTS file to my external decoder (logitech z5400) perfectly... and playing it with VLC player via software decoding... but how can I test the internal DTS decoder of the x-fi with this .dts file?
Ok now another "problem"...
I have a full DTS CD-Audio (not individual DTS files).
I think there are 3 options to play it:
-Using external DTS decoder sending the signal via spdif passthrough.
2-Using X-fi internal decoder (xtreme music model)
3-Using software decoder (Power DVD or VCL player)
I have only been able to listen to that CD with option 3.
optio ... If I try to play the CD with powerdvd and option SPDIF on, the external decoder identifies the sound is DTS but no sound plays at all...
option 2... another again I don't know how to try this using the X-fi internal dts decoder.
Thank you for your time.

• External 24bit Li

I am having some difficulty getting 5. setup for my HTPC using this external soundcard. I currently have Optical running from the soundcard to a yamaha receiver. In the settings for the soundcard I have it set to Digital Only. I have the dvd decoder (Nvidia's) set to pass SPdif through. Once I set all of that up while playing a DVD the reciever now lights up as if all of the speakers are being used (even the DTS light will illuminate)?but sound still only comes out of the front 2.
Does anyone else have any other reccomendations. I saw a lot of tips for disabling AC-3 for the audigy product but I dont see anywhere in the settings for that on the 24bit li've external. Any help will be greatly appreciated. -loop

DVD set to 5. in the audio setup. (same symptoms multiple DVDs)MCE Audio settings set to SPDIF passthrough?(Nvidia Purevideo Decoder)Soundblaster settings under Speaker setup Set to Digital only(I?also have FFDshow installed which is also set to SPDIF passthrough for AC-3)?When?the DVD is played?on the receiver I get the DTS/Dolby Digital light and the 5. Speakers. I however am only getting audio out of the front Left and?Right.

• X-Fi: cannot get multi-channel sound or SPDIF passthrough

I've owned an X-Fi XtremeMusic since it first came out, and have been running it with a MCE2005 system. I've had it hooked up to a home theater receiver via SPDIF and 5. analog, but have only had stereo speakers until today. So, right now I'm trying to get multi-channel sound to work. I'm using the latest drivers (have also tried the original drivers) and have all Microsoft patches applied.
First, I cannot seem to get it out of stereo mode. Using the analog outputs to the 5. analog input on my receiver and setting the X-Fi to 5. speakers refuses to produce sound from anything except front left/right. I've used the Speaker Connection Wizard, the THX Console, the Speaker & Headphone console... and no matter what speaker icon I click on the sound comes out of the front left or right as if it is downmixing. I've also tried 4.0, 6. and 7. modes - no improvement. Also, multi-channel sound does not work in MCE setup, games, etc.
Quite by accident I discovered that if I enable CMSS I can get *some* sort of sound from the rear speakers, but only in the sense of an effect. Also, with CMSS enabled, when testing the front center I get the word "front" out of the left/right speakers which then fades out before "center". If I test it again I get nothing (except a slight effect from the rear).
Finally, I cannot get the SPDIF passthrough to work (it DOES work just fine passing out stereo 48khz sound). I've enabled SPDIF on the flexi-jack, I've set Dolby Digital and DTS to "external decoder required", and NONE of my applications present me with an option to use the SPDIF. This includes MCE, VLC and the latest version of CyberLink PowerDVD. Basically it seems that they can't see that there is a SPDIF on the system to use.
Anyone else experienced this? I've spent 5 hours testing everything I can think of and trying different combinations of settings and I am completely at a loss!

Well, I guess I'll answer my own problem in the hopes that it might help someone else.
It seems that hour 8 of frustrated troubleshooting turned up the cure: all of this boils down to Logitech's stupid Quickcam Fusion drivers. With Logitech's "AEC" echo cancellation mode enabled for the built-in microphone, their drivers automatically turn audio acceleration down to second from the bottom. This results in the X-Fi performing nearly no hardware processing (later testing with DXDiag also said I had no hardware buffer). This results in no multi-channel audio, and no SPDIF passthrough.
There are a couple of solutions...
) Disable "AEC" mode from the Logitech Quickcam control panel applet's Audio tab (and reboot). This worked for me.
2) If this doesn't work, go into the Device Manager and disable the Quickcam's microphone (and reboot). This worked for me, but then I tried # which also worked and still let me use the microphone.
3) Logitech's site (which mentions this problem/solution but only in the context of it causing BSOD crashes, not with it messing up multi-channel sound cards) mentions renaming one of their Audio directories to disable the microphone, although I don't see why this would be better than #2 (see http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/...p?p_faqid=4066 for more).
4) Unplug the camera.
So, I'm back in business - or rather, I'm only NOW in business!
Interesting that the Creative diagnostics utility turned up anything amiss. It claimed that everything was hunky dory, when the card was obviously in a mode where it could not possibly work correctly.

• SPDIF input passthrough to output?

I have a X-Fi Platinum Fatalty Champion card and was wondering if it is possible to have a digital signal go through the SPDIF input on the X-Fi Dri've and passthrough to the SPDIF output on the soundcard. My external decoder only has SPDIF input and since my soundcard is already plugged into it, I figured I would see if I could pass the signal through my computer and out to the decoder.

You can't change an InputStream to an OutputStream. You need to close the FileInputStream, then open a FileOutputStream. If you simply wish to add to the end of the file, then you can (AFAIK) open in append mode. If you wish to "modify" the current contents of the file, then you need to write a new file, as you are reading the current file, making the modifications as you go, then close both Streams, remove the current file and rename the newfile to the original name.

• Audigy 2 Platinum Pro stutters when decoding from AC3 via ffds

hi all
i am playing a movie with ac3 soundtrack on it.
My Configuration:
Audigy 2 Platinum Pro->AudioHQ->Hardwarecontrol (ger?testeuerung in German)->->Digital Input->Dolby Digital/SPDIF-In-Decoding
->Decoder->use installed Decoder->all settings enabled for Digital EX and DTS ES.
ffdshow->AC3 passthrough to SPDIF and DTS passthrough to SPDIF
I have 6. Analog Speakers connected. (Creative Set)
Problem: Audio stutters like hell !!
Since i also have HTPC (HomeCinema PC) configured with a external decoder, i know the file is ok, and its with all files. on my HTPC i have AC3 Passthrough (SPDIF passthrough if you like) and the decoder (Denon AVR) shows Digital In detected and decodes properly.
Well know to my PCs configuraton where the Audigy should make the decoding. As i play the file, regardless what programm (VLC, Media Player/Classic, InterVideo WinDVD) it shows me the Dolby Digital icon in the lower right screen as i start the movie, so it realizes the Digtial Audio, but why doesnt it decode it properly??

"problem now is, repack decodes all streams as dolby even if its mp3, and very funny, it only works with normal media player, media player classic has no audio anymore".
repack ? I think you mean reclock. mmmh, your problem sounds like a really bad installation, which creates a complete mess in the filter graphs.
Since I'm one who insists on bulding his architectures around generic softwares only (mediaplayer 6.4 and 0 for example), I'll advise you to first uninstall FFDShow, every codecs and parsers installed, and every players too (except the windows integrated ones ) Allways avoid all-in-one solutions if you want a super-flexible and easy to maintain system.
When you've cleaned your system, you can install the codecs and parsers you need for each format. Be aware to configure each one to decode only its format). Avoid the codec pack which are just good to mess what should be a clean installation. Avoid AC3filter, the ac3 decoder from your installed DVD player will be sufficient if it has a good SPDIF option (powerdvd5 audio decoder for example). You might need in some case an XFormer for your ac3 streams http://inmatrix.osnn.net/ac3xform.exe . And don't forget reclock. That's all.
"well, clearly decoding on the PC is far more complex then running it through a external decoder."
Decoding with the PC is complete piece of cake, that's building a good PC with a good system that is not something everything can do with just instinct
"can i control audio buffer in ffd? (id rather be in control then repack, since repack crashes after every movie...)", I don't know, I decided years ago to avoid all-in-one solutions, and on top of all, FFDShow.
" the audigy doesnt do all the work, which is very astonishing and very disapointing..."
What do you mean ? It uses CPU when decoding ? My ZS do not.

• No SPDIF passthrough when Dolby Digital Live is enabled?

Hello,
I have SB Audigy 2 ZS and Logitech Z-5500 speakers connected digitally and I am using Win XP SP3.
I bought Dolby Digital Li've Pack and I have a problem with not getting SPDIF Passthrough for DTS audio.
Before I enabled DDL, when I played back content with DTS-encoded audio, audio was passed through SPDIF to the decoder in Logitech speakers and the DTS logo would appear on the display of Z-5500 console. And decoding chain from AC3Filter would look like this:
Decoding chain:
(DTS - 48000) -> Spdifer -> (SPDIF 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Dejitter -> (SPDIF 3/2. (5.) 48000)
And there is also information: "SPDIF status: SPDIF passthrough"
This is straightforward - DTS audio stream goes to SPDIF output.
Of course this would only work if I chose SPDIF Passthrough option in Decoder tab of Audio console.
But after I enabled Dolby Digital Li've and played back DTS stream, the DTS logo would no longer appear on the console, which meant that the SPDIF passthrough was not working, despite the fact that it was still enabled in the drivers. For contrast, the Decoding chain for DTS after I turned on DDL looks like this:
(DTS - 48000) -> Decoder -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Processor -> (PCM24 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Dejitter -> (PCM24 3/2. (5.) 48000)
And there is info: "SPDIF status: Disabled (SPDIF output is not supported)" and info of what is happening under the "processor" stage
Processor:
(Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Input levels -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Equalizer -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> SRC -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Mixer -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Bass redirection -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Dither -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> AGC -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Delay -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Spectrum -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Output levels -> (Linear PCM 3/2. (5.) 48000) -> Linear->PCM converter -> (PCM24 3/2. (5.) 48000)
Much, much more steps along the way, which probably means inferior quality and also is in disregard of the SPDIF Passthrough that I had enabled.
Same thing happens when you play "nati've" Dolby Digital stream - instead of being passed through SPDIF to external decoder it is somehow "hijacked" by Dolby Digital Li've and needlessly tampered with.
My question is - how can this be disabled. I understand benefits of Dolby Digital Li've (that's why I bought it) but they stop being benefits when they interfere with legitimate DTS audio which should not be "down-decoded" into Dolby Digita - it should be passed through to the Decoder.
Not to mention that DTS Connect is not supported in Windows XP. "Real" digital DD and DTS streams should? be passed through untoched, and ony converted audio (mp3s, games, etc) should be decoded into DD. Otherwise there's degradation of quality.
The only "benefit" I noticed is that DDL is enabled, the sound is noticably louder, but for increasing loudness I have my volume knob on Z-5500 so I dont need it.
Does that mean that every time I want to listen something nati'vely encoded in DTS od DD I should disable Dolby Digital Li've? I hope there is some other solution to this.

Creative just admitted it is a bug - this is information from the "what was fixed" in the latest version of Creative Console Launcher:
"Unable to select the external decoder option automatically while Dolby Digital Li've or DTS Connect is enabled in the encoder settings."
Will this ever be fixed for Audigy software?

• Arstechnica: Creative lies on missing DTS/Dolby Decoding feature

Creative Says : "these functions are not supported at driver level in Windows Vista." This isn't true. When two of the driver files from a standard X-Fi card are replaced with two driver files drawn from a Dell-specific driver available at the company's support , DTS and DD decoding immediately reappear as options and function correctly."
"Creative might be able to get away with saying that DTS and DD decoding aren't enabled at the driver level for X-Fi and Audigy cards, but the functionality is clearly baked into the driver and is thus supported."
[url="http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/2008033-creative-irate-after-modder-spruces-up-vista-x-fi-drivers.html">Arstechnica story on the Dolby & DTS Decoding scandal

Below is my open letter to Creative about this situation ....
To Creative Executi'ves ,
I am a core customer, someone who has been purchasing your cards for years. Hear me out.
What you may not realize is this whole backlash about your drivers is not new, it has been building up slowly for months and has just now come to a head. With both my Audigy and more recently my X-fi Fatality card on XP, I have always used my Creative card as the center of sound on both my computer and my entertainment system. I took it for granted that after spending so much money on the ultimate sound card, that I could just plug in my cable box or dvd player into x-fi and my Klipsch speakers would hum. After spending so much money on computer speakers that would also double as my TV center speakers I was not about to buy another external decoder to do something I expect my sound card to do.
At first after moving to Vista I thought that this feature was eventually coming, that you were working diligently to get my x-fi's decoding capabilities back. Then month after month my expectations dwindled. Imagine my anger when I come to realize that this feature was purposely removed at the software level. That by simply adding two files from a x-fi dell driver that the feature came back. Then on top of it you pour salt into the wound by never fully explaining the reason why you removed these important features. Your explanation was simply that it was not supported and that PowerDVD would now handle all Dolby/DTS decoding. After months of waiting your explanation was far from sufficient. Imagine how annoyed i was trying to figure out how to get PowerDVD to actually decode something from an outside source , which it does not. In my case, and many others on this forum your explanation was lacking. Im going to take a leap and assume that something about Vista's DRM has prevented you from decoding Dolby & DTS. If that is the case why not come out and just explain it to your customers as such. Your lack of transparency on this issue has just been plain bad and now because of it you are angering your customer base.
Let me be clear, in my eyes, this situation has severely hurt your companies reputation and brand. The sad thing about this is that in the end this is not a story about lacking features. It's a story about a company with good products that just did not know how to effecti'vely communicate with it's customers. Will I ever buy another creative product again, I dunno. But I do know that this whole fiasco has decreased the chances that I will. If I do , it will most definitely not be one of your upper end products as I have always purchased in the past.
Im done with this rant, im going to play some Battlefield 2 with Ultra High EAX settings. Hey, at least they did not take away all my features like they did with those poor Audigy users

PawPaw, I feel your pain ! I currently own both an Audigy Platinum and a Creative X-fi Fatality. The main reason I purchased the upgrade cards which included breakout boxes is for the optical/digital in feature. As I say in my letter, I have, for years hooked up my DVD and cable box to provide my theater entertainment though my computer speakers. The setup worked great?
Creative in essence has retroacti'vely removed the feature that was the motivating factor in my purchase of their upper model cards. By making the decision not to add this "expected" feature on Vista (The default OS)? Creative, as I see it has in actuality removed a defining functionality from it's product line. It has made the front box with all it's special hook ups, pointless. Angering your enthusiast base is just not a good way to bring your company back into the green. If Creative had at least explained the reason for the feature removals, that's one thing. It would at least be a start towards improving customer communication.
It's sad to see such a staple in the tech industry go down hill so fast. While the company executi'ves in singapore are huddling around planning their company comeback.... Which is no doubt the next greatest thing high fidelity MP3 players . They ought to take some time out to think about the customer again because a company li'ves and dies on it's customers, not it's technology.

• S750 + Audigy 2 Platinum ZS external

Hello guys,
I have external Audigy 2 External Platinum Sound card and planning to buy S750. Will I need DDTS-100?I am confused about the decorder, I spoke to the tech support at creative and he said the speakers are not digital, so you won't get digital sound. He did sound like he was lost.
Would it be right to say that if I have Audigy Sound card I don't need DDTS-100? Thank you kindly

okay let me get this right, you own a audigy 2 zs platinum pro-that is a pci sound card with an external break out box, with several input and output's headphone and microphone jacks and remote control? If so and if you own any audigy 2 zs products, then if you want to plug in the s750's then you will need to connect them via the 3xanalogue jacks. The s750's don't have digital input, only analogue, which isn't a problem because they sound fantastic any way. To put it simply the sound card does all the work, decodes dvd audio via the onaboard dolby digital or dts decoders, creates 7. output from games and other audio then outputs the sound via the 3xanalogue outputs to your speakers. The only reason you would want the creative decoder module is if you wanted to plug the s750's into a game console or external dvd player. The external decoder module has in built dolby digital and dts decoders, but because your sound card already has these, there is no point in buying it.
cheers
