SPDIF digitial in/outs question.

Hello.
I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I use Logic Pro 7. I used to run a motu 828 but it recently died so I just purchased a new Tascam FW-1804. It lacks any outputs other than the digital spdif ones. I am trying to figure out how to route some dry tracks to an external vocal processor. The tascam and component have spdif connections and I'm assuming that is how i will have to send them, etc. But I can't seem to wrap my brain around the "how-to's" to make this happen smoothly.
I am under the impression that I will have to change the outputs on a track to "send" it to the processor and then record enable another track with new inputs? I've never used spdif and i am not really comprehending it all. Can i keep my signals mono or does everything get converted to stereo. Can i monitor the signal as it is going through the processor without hearing the dry track? Do i need to worry about volume levels? Do I have to do everything through busses or audio tracks? i need some guidance.
Again, i realize i am showing my lack of experience with this but I'm trying to learn so if my questions don't make sense, feel free to correct me...politely of course.

You would use the I/O plugin most often, it allows you to select your in and out channels. Insert it where you want the effect to appear. You do need to mind your levels sending and returning. You will use a S/PDIFcable for send and return, this will allow stereo over 1 cable:FYI. Use mono or stereo depending on what you want to process... usually stereo.... not always. Keep it mono if you wish. Just use the I/O "plugin" where you want the effect to be placed in the signal path.
Best,
J

  • EREC: Please explain the setup for knock-out questions in questionnaires

    Hi
Can anyone help me with the setup procedure for working with knock out questions in SAP 604 SP1.4?
I know the basics, but can't seem to figure out how to set it up.
    Greatly appreciated
    Jakob

    Hi Roman,
I also have a question regarding the Knock out questionnaires in EHP4.  I have set up a single selection questionnaire.  I would like to see a green light for all but one of the answers and I can not make this happen. If I mark the 4 I want green as "Expected" they appear red as does the one that I don't want to be expected. If I gradually mark them 100, 90, 80, 60, they are all green, even the one I marked with zero points. If I gradually mark them and mark them expected they are ready.   I have tried 9 different variations.
Here is what it looks like:
What was your most recent PEP rating?
    LP
    SP
    CP
    IP
    NP
I want green as my result if the internal candidate picks any of the first 4 and red if they pick NP.  I am just unsure of how to make this happen. Any advice you could provide would be most appreaciated!
    Thank you,
    Kelly

  • Really sorry for the old Dolby Digital Out question ,but

... I?ve tried all I?ve read in the forum. But I still get PCM96 Stereo only from my X-FI Platinum front SPDIF Out.
I mean that?s why I bought this card: easy SPDIF connection to my Pioneer THX setup.
Here is the story: At least PCM96 means some digital signal is going into my Reciever. I used the fixdigiout.exe to get to that point. The audio console reports 7. speakers and Bitstream Out.
I?ve tried ac3filter, but now I get only noise on my speakers. When I try to play a DVD with Mediaplayer , the option to output via SPDIF is greyed out.
My target app is Sony Vegas 7, where I intended to do some Surround Mixing. But it only gives me Stereo on SPDIF.
Has anyone successfully managed to get this expensi've card to do what it is supposed to?
    Regards
    editmaster

Except for the DVD playback thing, the card is doing what it is supposed to do. It can only pass-through bitstreams, not encode on the fly. To get pass-through you have to disable the built-in decoder and enable spdif-out in the player, WMP doesn't support spdif by itself, you have to?check on the DVD decoder documentation. Also if you have a logitech webcam, disable the integrated microphone. Finally if you are using Vista to SPDIF-out is a mess and pass-through not always works.

  • Multiple Headphone outs question

    Hi there,
I recently asked for a bit of help getting my home studio setup sorted and I just need a bit more advice please!
While I'm experienced in the live room of a studio, I'm still very much an amateur on the other side of the glass! Basically I'm just putting together a basic setup to track some demo's / ideas with my band. So far, I've got a Motu 8PRE interface running the drum and instrument mics into Logic and the outs from the 8PRE going to the monitors. My question is this...
How do I set up multiple headphone outputs with independent mixes so band members can have a custom mix in their headphones? I'm having a hard time figuring out how this would work and have no idea what I need to do in Logic to set it up, and also what hardware I might need.
If anyone could explain this, both how to set it up in Logic and the kind of hardware I would need that would be fantastic!
    Many thanks in advance

    1) Yes
    2) Sorry - I assumed that box had 8 outs too - I assumed wrong. You could get an additional multi-channel interface which accepts ADAT inputs as well as analog, which would give you great flexibility. MOTU makes several - better yet check out RME, Focusrite, and others. There are dozens on the market - it depends on your budget and future expansion plans.
    3) Yes, or a headphone distribution system - but again, your budget will determine this. Hear, Furman and Aviom all have systems. Or for much less, Presonus headphone amps. Depending on your physical set up, you might need a snake unless you're using an already wired recording room.
    Good luck.

  • Audio out question?

I just got in my G5 DP 2.7 and this thing is sweet. Now with that said, on to the question. I have a pair of Yorkville Studio monitors that I want to connect to my G5. The Yorkvilles have XLR inputs on them and they are Bi-amped. I do not want to go 1/8" mini to XLR for sound quality reasons. Do you guys know of another way that I can do this, possibly using the optical out to a coverter?? or a new sound card that has RCA's. Then I could go XLR from the d/a box or rca to XLR with a sound card. I was looking at some M-Audio pieces, just a little unsure. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again in advance for your time.

M-Audio's Audiophile 2496 in their Delta line is really good. Has RCA in and out, as well SDIF. Great specs, works on MAC and PC, and is only 100 bucks.

  • Scale out question: how does instance name affect primary/secondary node

    Hi:
    OBIEE 11.1.1.6.4, Windows 2008
On a test instance the following happened:
    1. Enterprise install of OBIEE 11g had problems
    2. Reinstalled OBIEE 11g, but the installer created an instance2
    3. All was well with this install
    4. Performed all necessary shared catalog and RPD steps
    5. On a second server, installed OBIEE 11g using the scale-out option
    6. On second server, this created an instance1 directory
    7. All components start up and we can log into OBIEE using either server1 or server2
    Question:
Does OBIEE use the instance names in a scale-out? Our primary node is instance2 and the secondary node is instance1, though on a separate server. Will this cause a problem?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hello,
This can be run on any of the replicas that the availability group participates in to return the primary instance:
    select primary_replica FROM sys.dm_hadr_name_id_map nim
    inner join sys.dm_hadr_availability_group_states ags
    on nim.ag_id = ags.group_id
    WHERE nim.ag_name = 'MyAvailabilityGroupNameHere'

  • Video out question

Question - I bought a cable at Fry's to do video out. (goes into my headphone jack and has the red, yellow, and white cable coming out) I get sound but no video. what gives? Do I need an Apple branded cable? Did I do something wrong? How can I do this?
Also do I want the setting on PAL, or NTSC?
    thanks

Is this polling for the chip something that started with the 2.x firmware. I didn't have a problem using the 1.1.x firmwares, but I made the leap directly to 2.1 yesterday and now I can watch video on TV.

  • No SPDIF (digital audio out) on Advanced dock with T60p/Vista

    Hello,
Has anyone used the RCA jack on the back of the advanced dock to send digital audio to a home theater system? It's not working for me. Here are some of the particulars of my situation.
Windows Vista SP1 (but I had the same problem under XP; yesterday's upgrade to Vista was in hopes of solving this)
Windows Media Center setup wizard recognizes the presence of the SPDIF output
Windows audio setup recognizes the presence of the SPDIF output and claims it's working (screenshot below)
Coaxial digital audio cable is good (tested this by using a SqueezeBox2 to pass audio through it into the receiver)
Receiver is good and configured properly (tested this by using a SqueezeBox2 to drive the same input over coaxial SPDIF)
Audio driver is SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio 6.10.1.5500, dated 7/24/2007
    ThinkPad T60p BIOS is 2.22
No sound comes out no matter what I do
    Here are a few screenshots.

    http://spblat.googlepages.com/sound3.png
There may be a clue in this last one. When I click "Test" my receiver "flaps" between displaying "Stereo" and "Dolby Digital" about twice per second, as though it's trying but failing to get a lock on the signal. Remember that the cable and receiver are tested good with another digital audio source.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts!

    Hey!
I reverted back to the old drivers and got my SPDIF Port working again.
Link to the old version is here:

Make sure you install this before the drivers after you uninstall the old ones:

  • IMac Adapter Out Questions (Mini-DVI to VGA)

    Hi everyone,
I've got a 2.4ghz C2D 24" iMac. For two years I had the iMac hooked up to my LCD tv via this route: iMac -> Mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter -> 75' VGA Cable -> LCD TV. I recently upgraded my TV, and no longer have a VGA port on the TV. I'm not looking to replace any cables because it's quite costly, and at this point in my life I'm not willing to spend that much to replace the setup.
My new TV has a DVI-D port on it. This is a very random connection, and yes, it is DVI-D (NOT DVI-I or DVI-A). What I'm wondering is if I get another adapter, a DVI-D male to VGA female adapter, will the iMac recognize the TV? I'm not sure how the video card treats the exterior Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter and am wondering if a simple $5 adapter will suffice.
Any help or information regarding this would be great.

That is a common adapter and it works, but the way it works is digital-to-analog. In other words, you plug the male DVI end into your computer and the female VGA end into the VGA cable (which then goes to your monitor/TV/whatever). Unfortunately it would not work if you went DVI(Mac)-to VGA cable-to DVI(TV) because it cannot convert the analog signal back into digital.
Those adapters are handy to have anyway so you could always buy one and try it out, but I'm sure you'll just get a blank screen (or the dreaded "no signal" message). Sorry

  • Mini DVI out questions

I've been thinking of hooking my Macbook up to my 52" 720p HDTV. But most of the mini-DVI adapters I've been looking at are only S-video or compsite (RCA) out.
Has anyone used this and can let me know how this works? I'm mostly watching TV shows that I have downloaded from iTunes, burn to CD and watch them in my DVD player. But I would like to save myself the disc trouble and connect the Macbook directly to the TV.
Also, how do normal programs or surfing the web look on a TV using these adapters?
I'm not intersted in using the AppleTv.

You need one of these at the link below assuming your TV has either an HDMI or DVI input.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B?fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/cables&mco=MTUzNTQ
From problems noted on other postings here, you should stick with the Apple mini DVI cable.
Then, assuming you are going to go the HDMI route, you will need a DVI-->HDMI cable. I would recommend getting a 6' cable unless you need more length. You will need a separate audio cable with either HDMI or DVI since the mini DVI cable does NOT carry sound.

  • TNS-12535: TNS:operation timed out Question

I get the following error when I try to connect using oracle 9i personal client.
    TNS-12535: TNS:operation timed out
The thing is the connection worked 2 days ago and then all of the sudden I get this error.
I've tried changing the CONNECT_TIMEOUT to 0, but that hasnt work.
    Anyone have a solution?
    thanks, bryan

sounds like a problem reaching the database over the network (or remotely, however that may be). Be sure you have access to the directory where your tnsnames file is located, if you have TNS_ADMIN set in the regisrty, make sure it is pointing to a directory you have access to, etc. I had this error the other day and it turned out it was just failure to connect to the tnsnames file directory on our network.

  • Hdajackretask line out question

    Hi there!
I want to remap (retask) headphones jack (3.5 mm) to act as line out.
Trouble is in that I can choose only from "Line out front", "Line out back", "Line out center", "Line out side", but I want just one simple "Line out" to connect to 1 channel amplifier.
What can I make in such situation? Will "Line out front" be suitable in such situation? May be "Advanced options" checkbox will help (but I don't know how to configure port in this mode)?
    Thanks.

Better audio would be relative.  Remember the audio will only be as good as the weakest link in the chain.  If you are prepared to use high quality audio files, amplification and speakers or headphones, then yes, you can get better audio performance.  But if you are only planning to make a partial commitment, you aren't going to get any gain and will just waste your money.
Here is an example of a iPhone/iPad/iPod D/A device on Amazon.  I'm sure there are many more you can check out.
    http://www.amazon.com/Nuforce-ICON-IDO-SILVER-Audiophile-Grade-Headphone-Devices /dp/B005LRTH5Q/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1414176166&sr=8-7&keywords=ipod+lightning+ cable+headphone+amps
You don't want to go too cheap because a poor quality D/A converter may make the audio worse.  What devices like this does, is take a function that your iPad already does through built-in circuitry and do it externally with the assumption that you can buy a D/A converter and amplifier with higher quality components than those used by Apple.

  • Display Out Questions

So I really can't figure out what is going on. I have a mini display to hdmi chord which will put my computer screen onto my tv. Also I have a mini display to vga adapter with a vga chord to plug into that and then plug into the back of my tv. the hdmi works and will display on my tv but for whatever reason the vga chord will not show up on my tv and I don't have any idea as to why. I've tested the chord and know that there isn't a problem in the chord, and obviously the mini display out still works and it pic up that something was plugged in just nothing is displayed on the tv.
any suggestions as to what could be going on?
or any settings that should be changed?

  • Matx mobo video out question?

    Hi folks.
I plan on purchasing a MS-6533EG mobo for a htpc project.
The spec shows "Complete TV-out/Digital flat panel solution and MPEG-2/1
        Video decoder"
Searches show a SIS301B add on card for this function.
There is no info (that i can find) as to how to get this card, or access tvout with the SIS651/962L chipset.
    Any info is much appreciated!

  • Z10 video out questions hopefully someone knows.

before I start buying adapter I figured I would ask. Z10 seems like it could be handy for video out document sharing at meetings however 95% of all projectors we come across are vga . anyone tried this. Would you need a micro hdmi to vga adapter with sound or would headphone jack still work? so if you needed sound you could plug into headphone jack and just have micro hdmi to vga?
any help would be great before spending money on all sorts of adapters.

I thnk I'd go from the Micro HDMI to VGA
