SPDIF-In decoder crackling is

Hello,
I have a problem with my X-Fi Platinum and built-in decoder for Dolby Digital signal. I connected my Xbox 360 or my PS3 on it (Optical In), using the bult-in decoder of the soundcard (both on Windows XP and Windows Vista) and when the sound is too loud or with some sounds, there is always a very annoying crackling sound (when there are explosions in Crackdown or in Gran Turismo 5 demo when skidding).
Is there a way to have this decoding issue fixed or to force use of another decoder than Creative's one in order to stop having this crackling issue ? Maybe by passing SPDIF input to another decoder or filter like AC3Filter, but how ?
Thanks.

After reading many posts, it seems that the problem comes from the +4dB gain or the "Complete" option of Dolby Digital decoder. But the gain is not checked and switching from the default "Complete" to "Normal" mode for Dolby doesn't work at all, as if there were no changes, and this in any mode (Entertainment, Games or Music Creation).
Does anyone have a?solution to force change of these parameters ? I know that the crackling noise appears when the sound is too loud but it's impossible to change input volume when using built-in decoder, which is really a pain.

  • SPDIF & Built-in decoder

    Hi everyone.
I have an X-FI Fatality (with remote & front bay) wich, as far as I know, is able to decode DTS & Dolby (In fact, I've been using that feature for a couples of years).
While using XP, to be able to use the DTS and Dolby decoder, I had to choose as the output for the player (for example, Powerdvd) SPDIF, and enable the internal decorder as well as the SPDIF-IN decode (in the SPDIF tab) at the soundcard control panel. When I played some content with DTS or Dolby, the black & white logo appeared at the bottom right corner. If the content was, for example, stereo, it worked anyway (That's the case of multiple audio format DVD's. If I chose the DTS track, it played decoded by the soundcar. If I chose the stereo one or played an AVI file, it also played).
Right now I'm, using Vista. To be able to make the decoding through the soundcard I have to change the default windows sound device (through windows control panel) to SPDIF output. Unless I change back the default sound device, I'm not able to play any other kind of audio (MP3, for exmaple).
So, the decoding is working. But it's pretty annoying to change the windows's sound settings everytime I want to watch a movie.
I'm the only one with this behaviour? Is it normal in Vista? Otherwise, do anyone know a possible solution or some kind of tip to guide me?
    Thank you, in advance.
I hope you undertand what my issue is. Keep in mind that English is not my native language.

Why would you want to do this if you're using analogue connection to your speakers You obviously get nothing from the speakers at all because you did not use a digital connection hence vista is attempting to stream the audio through a connection that does not exist at all
DD and DTS decode should work with the same settings you use under XP. That is in the Entertainment Mode set DD and DTS bitstream out to OFF (use built-in decoder) and in the DVD player software set output to SPDIF (without any effects). This should route the digital audio from your DVD movies to the built-in decoder which, when decoded will be output through your default speakers (the anlogue one) without having you to change your default output device to SPDIF (in vista's playback device settings)

  • Crackling on Dolby/DTS Optical inp

Hey there, just wondering if anyone knows how to control the volume levels for a Dolby or DTS signal. I have my Xbox 360 plugged into my X-fi Fatality with the SPDIF-In Decode turned on, but any sort of high-end sound comes out as a sort of crackle, rather than being clear. I figured that by turning the volume level down for the SPDIF, it might solve the problem, but SPDIF control doesn't seem to affect a Dolby or DTS signal.
Anyone have any ideas, or does this fall under the category of standard X-fi crackle?Message Edited by DarkAngel_ZERO on 0-7-2006 04:00 PM

Yeah, I already tried lowering the volume output to around 70% to compensate for an earlier problem I was having with World of Warcraft and my S750 sound system (the HolyProtection.wav audio cue was causing my speakers to pop something fierce). I'll try an even lower setting, but so far, it only seems to crackle if the audio source is external, rather than internal (a DVD movie played from the PC is just fine), hence why I asked if there was some way to control the input volume.
Also, just tried setting the output on the 360 to Dolby Digital with WMA Pro, which corrected a bit of the audio, but still caused crackling. Also, tried setting the volume level to about 50%, and still no change.
Startin' to think this might be a software (possibly hardware) problem... I wonder if a format will prove helpful.

I have a X-Fi Xtreme Audio and I need to decode dolby digital sound from the optical in. ?How can I make this possibleBy software? Thanks.

I can't believe this. Creative makes a card with optical in, taht is only for stereo signal. No ac3 decoding. INCREDIBLE. How can Creative sell us a X-fi card with the audio console capped with no game mode and only for entertainment mode?. But the most incredible thing in this case (X-fi xtreme music) is that this card not have an X-fi processor. How can creative sell us a card with the X-fi name, but without an X-fi processor and X-fi features? I don't understand. Only in the forums the people can learn this things about this card. Why creative
don't warn us about this problems after selling?. This is a nightmare.

Can your source do True DD or DTS output. If so check your SPDIF input settings try setting it to Dolbydigital/DTS SPDIF-Inpute Decode.
Try it with your DD/DTS driver decode on or off.
If that doesn't work try setting your SPDIF input settings to SPDIF bypass with you DD/DTS driver Decode on.
Lastly if you have an external decoder built into your speakers have your DD/DTS?decode off (Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream out) and your SPDIF input setting set to SPDIF bypass.
Check your devices settings try difrent settings like PCM out or AC3 digital out.

  • Audigy 2 Platinum Pro stutters when decoding from AC3 via ffds

    hi all
i am playing a movie with ac3 soundtrack on it.
    My Configuration:
    Audigy 2 Platinum Pro->AudioHQ->Hardwarecontrol (ger?testeuerung in German)->->Digital Input->Dolby Digital/SPDIF-In-Decoding
->Decoder->use installed Decoder->all settings enabled for Digital EX and DTS ES.
ffdshow->AC3 passthrough to SPDIF and DTS passthrough to SPDIF
I have 6. Analog Speakers connected. (Creative Set)
Problem: Audio stutters like hell !!
Since i also have HTPC (HomeCinema PC) configured with a external decoder, i know the file is ok, and its with all files. on my HTPC i have AC3 Passthrough (SPDIF passthrough if you like) and the decoder (Denon AVR) shows Digital In detected and decodes properly.
Well know to my PCs configuraton where the Audigy should make the decoding. As i play the file, regardless what programm (VLC, Media Player/Classic, InterVideo WinDVD) it shows me the Dolby Digital icon in the lower right screen as i start the movie, so it realizes the Digtial Audio, but why doesnt it decode it properly??

"problem now is, repack decodes all streams as dolby even if its mp3, and very funny, it only works with normal media player, media player classic has no audio anymore".
repack ? I think you mean reclock. mmmh, your problem sounds like a really bad installation, which creates a complete mess in the filter graphs.
Since I'm one who insists on bulding his architectures around generic softwares only (mediaplayer 6.4 and 0 for example), I'll advise you to first uninstall FFDShow, every codecs and parsers installed, and every players too (except the windows integrated ones ) Allways avoid all-in-one solutions if you want a super-flexible and easy to maintain system.
When you've cleaned your system, you can install the codecs and parsers you need for each format. Be aware to configure each one to decode only its format). Avoid the codec pack which are just good to mess what should be a clean installation. Avoid AC3filter, the ac3 decoder from your installed DVD player will be sufficient if it has a good SPDIF option (powerdvd5 audio decoder for example). You might need in some case an XFormer for your ac3 streams http://inmatrix.osnn.net/ac3xform.exe . And don't forget reclock. That's all.
"well, clearly decoding on the PC is far more complex then running it through a external decoder."
Decoding with the PC is complete piece of cake, that's building a good PC with a good system that is not something everything can do with just instinct
"can i control audio buffer in ffd? (id rather be in control then repack, since repack crashes after every movie...)", I don't know, I decided years ago to avoid all-in-one solutions, and on top of all, FFDShow.
" the audigy doesnt do all the work, which is very astonishing and very disapointing..."
What do you mean ? It uses CPU when decoding ? My ZS do not.

  • Audigy 2 Platinum sync probl

Hello. I have had an Audigy 2 Platinum for over a year now and use it as a decoder for our pioneer stand alone dvd player.Speakers are Megaworks 550. The problem is the audio lags behind the video after an hour or so into the movie. The souncard is in its own irq 8 with no conflicts. The latest drivers and software are installed and the same with xp pro service pack 4.Any idea how to resolve this for the only fix now is to stop and restart the player or toggle between spdif ac3 decode and default i audio hq. Im getting fed up with this and will just get a regular reciever and speakers if it cannot be resolved . Thanks in advance.
    Bug

I came here looking for this exact problem. However mine is NEVER in sync when I use the SPDIF mode. As soon as I turn it to normal stereo it works fine. In a related issue, the sound playback of any DVD is about half of everything else on my system. I have to turn up the volume to about 80% to hear a DVD at a listenable level whereas normal volume for me is at 40%.
My stats are as follows: P4 3.2c, Abit IC7-G, 2GB DDR PC3200, Audigy 2 ZS Platinum, BFG 6800GT OC, XP Home SP2, and the Nvidia DVD Decoder. Everything is running the latest drivers. The volume problem has been happening ever since I purchased this ZS. I never had the problem with my older Audigy 2. The SPDIF issue is new to me since I have only recently been using it. Any ideas?

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro + Xbox 360

    #Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro + Xbox 360? My xbox360 audio setup:
Xbox360 - Optical audio out - Dolby Digital 5. / Dolby Digital with WMA / Digital Stereo
Cable - Meter Fiber Optic cable audio Cable
Input - SPDIF/Optical-IN on Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro External Dri've
    Decoder - Creative Built-in Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In Decode @ 48/96KHz
    Speakers - Creative Inspire T7700 7.
OS: Windows XP/Vista with Latest Creative drivers.
    Concern:
1 - Whenever Xbox starts up - i have to remove the cable and replug it in for the sound to start coming.
2 - If i play any video or movie - there is no audio heard and after the movie ends - i have to reconnect the audio cable for the system sounds to return. (this does not apply to in-game FMV)
3 - Sound breaks and cracks in some games during multiple loud audio scenes. Such as in Forza3 - a car crash would cause cracking/breaking sound.
Overall most games run fine - I just dont know why no audio is heard when a movie is played! I've tried all different audio setups on the 360 but nothing works (WMA makes cracking worse)
    Whats the cause and cure?

    Problem solved.
    Uninstall/Reinstall SP3 did the job

  • Best Sound from Audigy 2 ZS

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro and I want the best sound quality I can get from my Sound Card.
In the Creative Audio Console, I have a few questions on what changes I should make. For the Decoder, do I click "Use Built-in Decoder" or click "SPDIF Passthrough (Dolby Digital / D T S Digital Out). For Bit Accurate, do I check "Enable Bit Accurate Recording" because for S/PDIF-IN and CD Digital it says "Unkown or invalid signal". And for SPDIF I/O, for SPDIF Input Settings do I click "default", "Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode" or "SPDIF Bypass". And for the finial thing, for Digital Output (PCM) Sampling Rate Settings, do I check "44. KhZ (Stereo Only), "48 Khz" or "96 KHz".
I really do not know what those things do and if it will make a big difference but I want to get the best sound quality out of my sound card. Also if there are any other 3rd party drivers or utlities that will boot my sound performance, please let me know. I am going to hold up on upgrading to the X-Fi until prices go down. Thanks.

    >For the Decoder, do I click "Use Built-in Decoder" or click "SPDIF Passthrough"
That would depend on the quality of the external decoder and how the decoder (ie. surround amplifier) and the card are connected. Since the Audigy is crippled in the sense that many of its features are not available through its SPDIF output - because it can't encode multichannel digital audio and won't digitally play 96 KHz Audio DVD for legal reasons - most users will have an analog connection between card and hifi components (e.g. 5.). In that case, "use built-in decoder" is the option to use. However, your receiver should have a true analog path, ie. the 5. or whatever inputs should not be digitized and go trough another DSP in the receiver. Otherwise, sound quality would suffer a bit from too many analog-digital-analog conversions. If your surround amplifier digitizes analog sources - as cheap models tend to do - a fully digital path might improve sound quality. But you will then be limited by the poor design of the Audigy's digital section. For example, sound of games will only be available in stereo over an optical cable (Video DVDs are not affected, their signal is transported correctly). Everyting considered, you might want to have two connections: optical for Video DVD pass-through ("external decoder"), analog for games and DVD Audio disks. Btw, the analog outs of the card sound very good, in my opinion.
    >(Dolby Digital / D T S Digital Out). For Bit Accurate, do I check "Enable Bit Accurate Recording" because for S/PDIF-IN and CD Digital it says "Unkown or invalid signal".
Forget bit-accuracy with Creative Audigy sounds cards, these cards resample anything to 48 khz (if the central processor on the card is used in any way, shape or form). For bit-accuracy, you should get a different card. If your source is a CD, don't read the CD through the sound card. Don't even connect CD dri've and sound card - to remove a source of noise - but let Windows record disks digitally over the IDE bus. DVB/DVD is 48 KHz (or?), so CDs should be the primary victim of resampling. If you encode a CD into MP3, encode to 48KHz, ie. let the encoder to the resampling.
    >And for the finial thing, for Digital Output (PCM) Sampling Rate Settings, do I check "44. KhZ (Stereo Only), "48 Khz" or "96 KHz".
I would use 48 KHz because that's the cards working frequency.

  • No AC3/DTS pass-through option on my X-

As the title says, i miss the pass-through option in the console to pass the signal to an external decoder (the whole decoder section is missing). What's the problem? Please help.Message Edited by Nazgul9 on 06-0-2006 06:00 PM

    Hey
I see what you mean, but I've sent AC3 streams through the X-Fi card many times. Any way, I'm not looking for decoding abilities, I want the SPDIF signal decoded in an external Klipsch GMX D-5. decoder. I bought the "X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Pro". In entertainment mode the card works fine and I get AC3 from DVD streams read in the external decoder. But in gaming mode using the realtime AC3 software encoder I think theres a problem getting the SPDIF stream through. To be sure of this I headed for the Creative Audio Console and decoder tab, only that the whole section is removed from the console. Please tell me why this option is removed, it's such a frustration when you go ahead an spend alot of money getting a new card, and then basic options are gone.
    Thanks for any help given.

  • Question reagarding digital movie playb

    I?have a z5450 and a sound blaster x-fi fatality f
    ps.
I have a direct analog input and digital coax input. For playing dvd movies I use windvd 8 platnuim. In my sound card settings, I tried to get the spdif input setting to "SPDIF bypass" but as soon as I close the window, it switchies back to "dobly digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode". I have set my Windvd 8 to "digital spdif to external processer" mode. I have it set the expantion to "dobly pro logic IIx movie". I have full sounds in all speakers, but the sound is really low on all the speakers. I have to turn it wayyyy up to hear the movie. So after allllll that work, it would play better if I had set it to 6 ch direct. So, what Am I doing wrong. ps?I know that the proplem isnt big , but when you have a 600 dollor 5. suround system and a 200 dollor sound card, prefection is a standard

  • Audigy ZS 2 Platinum - Xbox In

    Hi all,
I've got my Xbox going through my pc and I'm having trouble getting the Dobly Digital Surround sound to work with the Optical cable plugged in. The Xbox is set up to put Dolby Digital Surround and DTS out thought the Optical cable and I've set the 'Device Controls' 'Digital Input' SPDIF to Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode.
    Why won't it work?
    TIA

I had the same problem. Go into the AudioHQ option from Control Panel and then the Device Manager. Make sure you have a game playing on the Xbox, and select the Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In Decode option on the Digital input tab, and Use Installed Decode checked on the Decode tab.
This should work, the only problem for me, is everytime I reboot, it stops working so I have to go back into the AudioHQ, ensure a game is running, and reselect the SPDIF option. Still awaiting an answer about that one!
Just discovered that if you unplug and plug in the cable with a game playing, the sound comes back without having to reset the AudioHQ settings.

  • Delayed digital sound output?

Presumably someone else has seen this already, but I could not find any such info in the FAQ or here.
I recently connected the SPDIF output to the stereo.
The sound output there, while good, is slightly offset from the analog output. When running with both analog and digital output active, the digital works as an "echo".
More annoying, when playing video, this means lips and voice are not in sync.
My guess is the offset is something like 0.1 - 0.2 secs.
    Anyone seen(/heard) of this before?
    WinXP, BIOS 2.4, APU 1.0 / audiodriver: 5.10.2826.0000

    Hook,
All this is using the SPDIF output:
I just checked and the delay is greater (and is probably what you are noticing) when you enable the Dolby Digital encoding. If you output Stereo, that is PCM, it will be much smaller. The DD encoding/decoding process takes time.
Sill, you will notice some delay anyway WRT the analog, as your receiver has to process the PCM signal a little, but not as much as the DD signal.
If your problem is lip-sync, set your DVD player to output directly to SPDIF and not to 6 channel audio. Just think about it:
DD track ->SoftDecode to 6 channel->MCP encode to DD->SPDIF->Receiver decode to 6 channel
    VS
DD Track->SPDIF->Receiver decode to 6 channel.
    Hope this helps.

  • Proper 5.1 Dolby Digital using Optical in on Audigy 2 ZS

As of yesterday night, I have connected my PS3 to my Audigy 2 ZS via optical in, so that i could hear 5.1 from my PC sound system (Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1).From what i've heard somewhere (I don't know if it's true) you need audio to be in the bitstream format in order to hear proper dolby digital 5.1 when using an optical cable. When selecting the (PS3 MENU) Blu-ray optical out as LPCM, I've managed to get audio to all speakers (including subwoofer (doesn't sound like proper LFE emission)) but it'sjust sounds like stereo on each channel, not the proper discrete surround sound. When I set my Blur-ray disc optical out to bitstream (hoping to hear real 5.1) I hear no audio during the film (although somehow on one test i heard sound in the menu). How do i get my sound card to recognize and decode the bitstream format so I can hear dolby 5.1 or is an LPCM signal sufficient for proper 5.1 In the creative audioHQ, I have set the digital input to Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-in Decode. This is the only change I have made (on the PC)so far to hear 5.1 sound from an external device (I also got the sound card to recognize the SPDIF-in). Is there more I am supposed to do, or is it enough? Is the AC3 audio filter neccessary for my situation? For additional information, (In the above setups) i do not get audio for DVDs or games (these could be PS3 issues)?Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated? Thanks!

Here is perhaps a better reply ....
The only 5. compressed signal the Video Editor (or the NX) can play is one that originates on the host - via a DVD player like InterVideo or Cyberlink, or from Creative Media Source application - the digital stream is decoded in the driver and then sent to the external device. It cannot act as a stand-alone decoder box in which the signal originates from the S/PDIF jack.

  • X-Fi I/O Upgrade Quest

I know very little about sound cards, so please be patient with me. I recently purchased a Dell using Windows XP with 5. surround speakers and the X-Fi ExtremeMusic card. Rather than purchasing an additional revei'ver and speakers for my digital cable box (I'm having issues with Media Center as well, but that's a different story) and DVD console or a larger monitor to replace my TV, I was thinking about purchasing the X-Fi I/O Upgrade for the cable and external DVD digital inputs to play through my computer. I've been reading and researching for days now, and while there is a lot of discussion about digital output, I can't seem to find anything about using the digital input other than for use in recording. Can you use it simply to play the audio? If so, how do you enable the source? I tried emailing Creative Support, but I've received no response, so I thought I would try here. Thanks...

If the XtremeMusic came preinstalled with the Dell?probably?it didn't come?with?built-in DD/DTS decoders, so it won't work with 5. signals from external sources (If you want to verify open Creative Audio Console and look for?a Decoder tab). To listen to PCM stereo you just have to unmute the SPDIF-In in the mixer, to decode DD/DTS you have to select 'Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode'?from the 'SPDIF Input Settings' drop-down menu in the 'SPDIF I/O' tab (only available if the drivers detect the I/O dri've or console and the built-in decoder is installed). Be aware that decoding with the soundcard can introduce lag since Windows is not a real-time OS and the decoder has clipping problems during loud sounds with bitstreams encoded on-the-fly like in the Xbox360/PS3. There are people that built succesfully a receiver-less HTPC with an X-Fi but you'll avoid a few headaches with a standalone receiver.

  • Difficulty connecting X-FI I/O drive to AV amplifi

I have a 5. channel home theatre amplifier. When I connect my X-FI plat I/O dri've to the coax in on the amplifier it only plays on 2.0 of the 5. available channels. The 'Entertainment Center Settings' program uses Intervideo Home Theatre as its decoder, which has an SPDIF out option (that cannot be checked from entertainment center, have to use intervideo program) and does not let me select more than two speakers (no matter which program is configuring it. Is this an issue with that program? Is there an SPDIF audio decoder out there that'll work right? Or is there a way to configure this one to read properly?

I have been looking on ebay for some time?but had no luck.. You would think that this kind of items should be easily available from creative but unfortunately is not the case. If you?lose or damage the cable the I/O dri've became uselsss...
