SPDIF optical audio input problem

having got over the audio stutter problem by upgrading to 10.4.5, i discover that there is a part 2 to the audio faults on the last g4 powerbooks.
i've been trying to record from DAT via the spdif input, but after a random amount of time, the apps stop recording with a processor overload error, or worse, something very similar to the looping audio problem previously thought cured.
If i try and record via line in analogue - there is no problem.
I'm not really streesing the CPU - i've been forced to try and use simple recorders like quicktime and boom recorder , trying to keep it simple and reliable at this stage.
any ideas?

But when I plug the output of the Radio Shack controller into the audio input of the iMac, it captures only one end (my end) of the conversation.
Where did you previously connect that output, when it works properly?
Is it coming over only on the left or right channel?
You may be able to control the audio input more precisely using the +Audio Midi Setup+ utility (in the Utilities folder).

    Hi
I tried playing in a recording from a Minidisc for editing on Adobe Audition - something I've done many times with Audition on other computers but never with this one. When I opened Audition I got the message:  'Adobe Default Windows Sound Driver. Audio input is not activated. Recording audio is not possible. Please check your input configuration.'

  • SM-58/audio input problem

Hi. I don't know if this is the right forum, but it's worth a shot. I am at my wit's end.
I have an SM-58 vocal mic, which I used to use through my macbook with a Blue Icicle interface. I then purchased a Line 6 UX1 guitar interface, with PodFarm software, which I then linked to GarageBand. At first I had no problem recording in GarageBand using my SM-58 routed through the UX1. At some point, however, the computer stopped receiving a signal from the mic.
At this point, I no longer receive any input signal from my mic, whether I'm in GarageBand, PodFarm, or simply in the system preferences>sound input window. And the thing, is I know the mic is fine - it works fine through analog gear. I know all the other equipment is fine, too, since it works with my guitar. So what happened to my mic sound? Why does the computer no longer pick anything up? If anyone can help, I would be extremely grateful... I'm lost.

But when I plug the output of the Radio Shack controller into the audio input of the iMac, it captures only one end (my end) of the conversation.

  • Annoying audio-input problem

I have a really strange and annoying problem. Everytime I boot up, I have to change the mic-volume in Audacity for any audio-input to work.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I've had this since I installed Arch Linux.

    I assume you've read this.
Is there anything that sets volume during startup?  Check rc.local.

  • Fiber Optic Audio Input

Question for y'all. I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro both with fiber optic audio in and out. I have often used the fiber out line to connect to my home theater system with no issues. Something I have wanted to do, however, is to record audio in through the fiber in. The downside is that when attempting to record using the fiber in line all I get is some popping or other similar noise but certainly not the audio I was trying to record. I did go into the system prefs and change the audio input to the fiber optic and that seems fine.
As a test, since I know the fiber optic out on both computers works fine, I even attempted to use one computer as the source and the other as the recorder and that wouldn't work either even though the fiber out of the source is active and good.
Anyway, would like to see what anyone has to offer and thanks in advance!

So you are saying that the app to record the audio coming through the audio in port recorded nothing, or are you saying you could not hear what it is recording?
    To hear incoming audio you need the free app LineIn from Rogue Ameoba;

  • Sun Ray audio input problem

We have a new application with a softphone integrated and we have problem in some DTU's with noise in input audio (Microphone). We have checked the firmware version in DTU's with problems are the same version as DTU's that don't have problems. Also we have observed that units with problem d'ont even respond to Stop+S for pop-GUI to appear, but we can't confirm that this is a rule in all units. We d'ont know what the really problem is because we thought in problems of networking but, when we replace a unit that d`oesnt work for other that works the problem disapears.
    Thanks in advance,
    Oscar.

Are you certain that these Sun Ray units have downloaded the new firmware that is delivered with the -03 patch? This audio fix is in the firmware, so if the units don't get the new firmware their behaviour won't change.

  • TOSLINK/SPDIF optical digital out problem

Dunno what the problem is here. I've used a mini-Toslink adapter and cable to successfully send a digital signal to my amplifier with my Macbook Pro and a previous iMac G5 iSight, but recently failed to do the same with my new 24" iMac. The red light and the Sound preferences suggest that the digital output is working, but no sound comes out. The same setup works fine with my MBP's digital output, so I can't explain the problem on the iMac.
Does anyone know of any other ways to test or verify that the digital output is working? Perhaps there is another way to turn the digital output on/off? I'm hoping this is a software issue ...
    Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem / issue with the digital outs...
I'm sending a digital signal via a mini-TOSlink adaptor to my MOTU 828mkII ADAT IN... first problem is that unless I set the MOTU's clock to ADAT IN... (and not use it's only internal clock) then I get digital noise when I playback anything on my iMac... since there is no way to set the iMac clock in Audio Midi Setup to External... it's greyed out.
The larger issue is that playback works fine as long as the Audio driver is being used... i.e. iTunes playiing something back. When I stop any audio playback... about 30 seconds later, the MOTU sync light starts flashing as it's NOT receiving a sync signal from the iMac anylonger. Then if I start playback again it takes about 2-3 seconds for the playback to sound. Totally unacceptable...
I noticed a few things... first off... I also send a signal from my MOTU BACK to my iMac through the iMac's digital IN. With the Digital Output on the iMac, plugging in the TOSLINK cable will automatically change the OUTPUT in Audio Midi Setup to Digital Out... when plugging in the 2nd cable to Digital In, Audio Midi Setup DOES NOT change to Digital In unless you start audio playback, and that's where the 2-3 seconds lag comes in. When you actually hear the playback, if Audio Midi Setup is open... you can see the INPUT switch from Line In to Digital In... and if you stop playback, you can see the Digital In go BACK to Line In about 30 secs later... which should NOT be happening... although technically the Digital in should have NO effect on the Digital Out here anyway... and in truth it doesn't... taking the Digital In out of the equation totally - I still see the same issues... just find it interesting that this is happening.
Anyhow, I have no advice to help you out rwcoch... I wish I did... this is ridiculous! I'm going to search a bit more and see if anyone else has anything remotely similar...
Can anyone else try to replicate my issue? Try sending a digital signal to another sound card... ?
    Thanks

  • Optical Audio Input

I'm planning to hook up a device's optical output to my MacBook's optical input, and I was wondering if there's a way, or if it does it by default, to send the audio signal straight to the output, so it will play on my speakers (with zero delay).
The reason I ask is because my speakers only have one input, so it would be easier to do it through the MacBook then manually swapping the cables all the time.
Basically: source --> optical cable --> MacBook --> analogue audio cable --> speakers.
Is this possible somehow and would it work?

  • Intermittent iChat audio input problem

    Hello all,
One client has an Intel Mac mini (Macmini3,1) with an external iSight camera running 10.6.7.
We can be having an audio or video conference, or a screen sharing session, and it will work fine for a long time.  After a while though, for reasons that I have yet to explain, his sound input will simply change to where I can only hear him if he is shouting.  When I go to the System Preferences, I can check his sound input volume and it can be turned all the way up, but he still cannot transmit any sound unless he shouts.  The sound input level also jumps normally on his computer, but that sound that is making the input level jump does not get sent through iChat unless it is very loud. This will persist until he reboots the computer, at which point it will be fine again.... for a while.
The only thing I have noticed in the console are:
    [0x0-0x23023].com.apple.iChat[229]  resetting echo canceller
    iChat[16487] attribute = {
    VCSupportARDAudioMux = 1;
    shouldFindExternalIP = 1;
    0x0-0xcd6cd6].com.apple.iChat[16487]     resetting echo canceller
    Any ideas?
    Router issue?
When we talk we are usually speaking on MobileMe and we have encryption enabled.....
    Thanks

    Hi Ralph,
In the System Preferences > Sound > Input does the blue bar seem to be alway "On" to some degree ?
    No
Could this be explained by the Camera mic picking up the computer's disk noise ?
I don't think so.  The Mini is pretty quiet and the iSight is on top of the monitor held in place via the magnetic holder
Does it do better on a rubberised mouse mat ?
    The iSight cam?
Does the same Preferences get the Ambient Noise Reduction button even though it has no internal Mic ?
No, there is none when iSight is connected and selected
If it does try chaing it between Off and On.
    Any MIDI input connected ?
sometimes, but never when we chat.  a keyboard for garageband.
If so check this is at 48000 as the sample setting for the External iSight. (May may to check this anyway).
In the Audio Midi Setup right?  will do that next time it is plugged in.
Will try to recreate that playlist as well.
    Thanks as always...

  • No sound on optical audio input but audio signal is there; mid-2007 iMac running OS 10.6.8

I've connected a digital turntable to my iMac via Toslink RCA/optical and I know the cables and converter are working. In the Sound preferences I can see evidence of an audio signal being received but there is no sound. This setup used to work before I had my hard drive replaced.

Erase the drive then install OS X:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If this doesn't work then the drive is probably bad or some of the new RAM you installed is marginally defective.

  • Audio Input Problems with Alesis MultiMix 8 USB Mixer

I have hooked up an Alesis MultiMix 8 USB mixer and condensor Microphone to my new iMac G5's USB port. When going into the Sound Control Panel my input slider for Audio in is grayed out and states that their are no input devices, (I chose the USB input device instead of internal mic.), yet it does pic up the sound from the mixer and mic. Also, I change my preferences in Garageband to use the USB mixer and Mic, but my Track Editor "wave forms at the bottom af Garageband are barely visible, no matter how loud I set the input volume. I used to have very large wave forms in the track editor when using my Logitech USB mic. The sound is fine when played back but it is a real pain when trying to edit in Garageband when I can barely see the wave forms in the track editor. I have tried this set up on my Powerbook also, with the same results. Can someone please help me with the settings using this mixer so I have GOOD usable wave forms in Garageband. Thanks -Swomper

  • Apple TV optical audio output problem only while watching a rented movies from iTunes.

I have our Sharp TV setup via the HDMI outputs from the Appletv and external powered speakers via the optical outputs from the appletv unit. The external speakers work fine with everything else on the appletv but not while watching rental movies from Itunes. The speakers give off a rhythmic ticking sound, no movie sounds, yet the tv does have the sound. Again, I can use the speakers for everything else from appletv. Rent a movie from ITunes and the speakers just tick. Any ideas?

Well, I have seemed to have narrowed it down. It would seem that the problem does not lie on the appletv unit. The sound works fine if "Dolby" is turned off in the appletv settings. The speakers are 5.1, should work. Thinking that the problem is the RadioShack brand converter. Converts the optical outs from the appletv to RCA.... then to the speakers. Something must be lost in "translation". Perhaps it is the quality of the cables. Don't know. Gut says the quality of the converter. Any suggestions for a perhaps better quality converter? Or should I just say screw it and just listen without the Dolby?

  • Optical Digital Audio Input on Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I am trying to use the optical audio input on my macbook pro (core duo) to record from a (relatively) old DAT recorder. So far, I've had no joy.
Assuming that the DAT and cable are working (I have done all I can to ascertain that they are), does anyone have any ideas why I am unable to select Digital In from either the Sound Control Panel, or Audi Midi Setup?
When I put the cable into the output, 'Line In' instantly changes to 'Digital Out' in the sound control panel. I would expect it to do the same for input but it doesn't. At no point am I able to select - in any settings - digital in.
I have asked at my local Applestore and they are also unaware how to get the input working. Any help would be gratefully recieved.
    Cheers,
    Rob Cowie
Macbook Pro 15" Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB RAM

    Hi,
The ouput from the DAT recorder is definitely SPDIF, and I've heard reports that it has worked on a G5 tower.
It's interesting to learn that the name of the input in the Sound Control panel doesn't change when inserting a digital cable... I had assumed it did.
However, selecting Line In and attempting to record does not work. The DAT plays - I can monitor it - the laptop records, but I get nothing.
I'm at a loss.... perhaps the port is broken, but the three machines in the applestore behaved in the same way. Perhaps I'm missing a driver, but I doubt it. I haven't messed with Core Audio.
If you have any more thoughts, please let me know.
    Cheers, Rob C

  • Trying to use optical audio

I have a DVR (slave) connected to a computer monitor as HDMI-2. My computer is connected to this monitor as HDMI-1. When I try to watch TV on this monitor (HDMI-2), video is fine but the only sound I obtain is through the puny speakers built into the monitor. I want to be able to use the surround sound speakers connected to the computer. So, I've attempted to use the optical audio plug on the back of the DVR unit. The sound card in my computer has optical audio in and out ports. I connected a plug from the optical audio plug on the DVR unit to the optical audio "in" plug on the sound card. However it isn't working. The only sound I get continues to come from the tiny speakers inside the monitor.
Can anyone offer me advise how I can get the TV connected to HDMI-2 to use the speakers connected to the computer?
    Thank you very kindly.
    David

Optical audio out is enabled by default on the Verizon boxes.  In fact, I don't think it can be turned off.
You most likely need to adjust a setting in your computer to make it use the optical audio input.  It may be a simple as a volume slider.  The exact procedure depends on your operating system, sound card and sound card driver.
    Good Luck.
