SPDIF to Toslink converter?
I need to connect my Sound blaster SPDIF coax digital output to my media center's optical input to get decent 5.1 quality. There should be a simple converter that costs less than just buying a new sound card, but I can't find one online.. any ideas?
Nokia - I suppose you're right about availability. However, it just seems wrong that I can buy a whole new sound card with built-in optical output for $30, and yet I can't a one-function optical converter for less than $20. I suppose it's economy of scale - not many people buy just the converter.

I have the x-fi fatalty sound card with shiny new spdif in/out and optical in/out but i cant seem to get any of these to work. I have an old DAT-recorder (yeah yeah, i?m an oldtimer) with both spdif and optical but i cant get any signal to the computer. The analog inputs work fine, as does the mic input and phones output. I?ve tried every setting in audio console and and audio in the control panel without success. What am i missing here? The support for the computer cant help me.
Did you
- set everything in creative mixer (creation mode; input source)?
- set the samplerate (/bit-depth) correctly (wasn't the DAT (6-bit/) 48 kHz?)?
- tried bit-matched input/output mode(s) (creation mode)?

Mac Mini: DVI+TOSlink- HDMI Adapter, still fiction?
Hello
I've been studying for a while the best solution for connecting my early 2009 Mac Mini to my LCD TV and Blu-Ray 5.1 System. I didn't took long to figure out the "Mini-DVI->HDMI Adaptor for video" and "Mini-TOS->TOSlink for audio" scenario. The problem is that I'm short on optical inputs. After thinking it through for a while, it dawned upon me that a "DVI+TOSlink->HDMI" adapter would crack this one. This adapter would take the DVI video and the TOSlink audio signals from the Mac Mini and composite them into one single HDMI stream. It seemed far fetched that such an adapter would even exist, but I decided to give it a go.
At first, after some initial research, I only found adapters like the following:
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-SPDIF-Toslink-Converter-Adapter/dp/B0015YYOQQ/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258995241&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Toslink-HDMI-Converter-Adapter/dp/B002N8PVTM/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258995241&sr=8-4.
Although they do convert the DVI signal to HDMI, the same can't be said in regard to the TOSlink audio signal. The audio part is not encoded into the HDMI stream, getting out through the same optical port it got in.
I was about to let it go when I found this adapter:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011405&pid=5369&seq=1&format=4#feedback
The are a few customer reviews that specifically state it works flawlessly with the Mac Mini.
The questions are: has anyone tried one of these? Does it really works? It it really possible to composite an HDMI stream from DVI+TOSlink inputs? If so, will it be any quality loss associated to the conversion process?
Thanks in advanceWelcome to the Apple Discussions!
There is not really much converting going on with regard to DVI (D) to HDMI. I use the mini-DVI to DVI (D) adapter that came with my Mac mini and a Belkin cable that is DVI (D) on one end and HDMI on the other. The signals are compatible. But as you say I run a separate audio cable from the mini to my HDTV. That is the real conversion that is taking place in the "black box" devices to which you are linking; adding the audio to the video.
There is another route that skips the video output from the mini altogether, but it is a bit more pricey, USB. I know of two USB to HDMI "black boxes" that give you both audio and video in the HDMI stream.

Digital audio SPDIF suddenly quit working
I was watching a video yesterday on our home theater connected to my Macbook. The audio was connected using a SPDIF to toslink cable and everything was working fine until suddenly the audio stopped. Analog out still works and the internal speakers still work when the cable is unplugged.
When optical is plugged back in, internal speakers stop but nothing is sent to the sound receiver over optical. When I check the Audio MIDI settings it detects that an optical device is connected. Any suggestions?
DaveThe Jack could be askew, but...
Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back. -
[solved] SPDIF times out
Hi,
I've connected my PC to a receiver using spdif / iec958 / toslink, which works fine. Except after a few seconds of silence the entire link is powered down which produces an irritating popping sound. Also, there is a small delay before I can hear the output because it has to power on again.
/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save is already 0 and /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save_controller = N.
Does anybody have any ideas?
My current workaround is continuously playing silence in the background, but for some mysterious reason that causes pulseaudio to use 5% cpu.
Last edited by Tes-- (2010-10-09 08:31:50)Yes, I already tried that, but it didn't work.
edit:
Alright, I solved it by editing /etc/pulse/default.pa and commenting out the line

Audio Problem with new Apple TV: Audio Optical (Toslink) to RCA
Hi guys,
I just set up my new Apple TV but don't have any audio so far (picture works).
It's probably because I connected the HDMI to DVI, as my Sony TV only has DVI.
Now I am thinking about getting audio by connecting the optical audio of the Apple TV to my stereo receiver to solve this issue.
Problem: my Sony STR-D315 receiver only has RCA connectors ( looking like this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/receiver%20rca/xyphon112/IMG_1701.jpg not sure if this is digital or analog)
Now I figured out that there would be converters:
http://www.canadacomputers.com/advancedsearchresult.php?keywords=toslink+converter&sid=moqhnqo7m5eup531h3dp3l62g4
Do you think this could solve my problem? I am little confused atm, but would I need the "toslink to digital coaxial(RCA)" or the "digital coaxial (RCA) to toslink" product?
My shopping list atm would basically be:
- the converter
- optical cable ( http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR841LL/A )
- this RCA cable ( http://www.daydeal.com/files/images3/blkrcacable.jpg )
Do you think this might work?
My goal is only to get sound, doesn't need to be super quality
Feedback from a cable expert would be very much appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance!!!
MartinJim, thank you so much for your answer.
That's what I was worrying about, I also think that the audio inputs of my Sony STR-D315 receiver are only analog. My Sony TV has audio input but unfortuntately it's not optical
A "TOSLINK to analog RCA converter" really sounds like the only solution. Would this be an appropriate one?
http://www.canadacomputers.com/productinfo.php?cPath=5_72_73&itemid=032471
I really like the new Apple TV but want to avoid buying a new receiver (or even TV). So thanks a lot for your help.
Have a good evening & all the best,

G4 iMac: No optical signal coming from Toslink/optical cable output!
I connected a mini-optical converter to a optical cable and do not see any light output. I do not get any additional choices in the Sound Prefs Output settings other than Headphone. Am I missing something here? I don't see anything in the MIDI settings that will alter this problem.
The mini optical-Toslink converter is non Apple but I have not come across anything saying it had to be. Help would be appreciated.Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately the +iMac (Flat Panel)+ pre-dates Optical Audio being included on iMacs.

Hi
Does anyone know How to run twin monitors on a MacBook Pro operating on a Windows Server 2008 R2 ?I know this doesn't help you much, but, I think you have to see if your Mac pro does audio out via HDMI. I don't even know if mine does via DVI. I think it may have to do with the adapter. Try going into Audio MIDI and setting the digital out to multichannel
and using the toslink cable for now. Lemme see...apparently DVI does not carry audio at all. Hm. apparently monoprice could be helpful? If I understand what you're saying correctly: you want to take DVI and multichannel audio via the Toslink and have it all go out over HDMI, right? Subject line pretty much says it all. I have many DATs recorded before the era of putting everything onto a drive. I'd like to transfer (digitally) these tapes to my MacBook Pro (2008, 10.5.8). My DAT deck is a Panasonic SV3700 which only has the RCA digital coaxial cable outputs. What do I need to buy (cable, converter, software???) to allow the SV3700 to transfer my files to my computer. I know I could use the analog input but that kind of defeats the purpose of going through the pain in the neck of recording those concerts digitally. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this problem exists for many old tapers out there, but I've yet to see a solution posted on any
In THEORY, you need a converter like this:
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=9137
to convert coaxial SPDIF to TOSLINK optical. The data stream is the same, it is just changed from electrical to optical.
Then you need an optical TOSLINK to optical miniplug cable like this:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902 &p_id=1557&seq=1&format=2
Then you need recording software (Garageband would work), and to make several settings in system prefs and the app prefs, and Audio-MIDI.app. A decent 2 channel basic audio editor is SoundStudio 4, but there are many.
I haven't tried the Gefen device, since I have other products that do this function. I have also heard that the Panasonics sometimes seem to have a non-standard data stream that just doesn't play nice with some devices. Be sure to have a money back guarantee. -
X-FI Titanium digital in question
Hello,
Here is my problem.
I have a Stanton T.90 turntable that has an spdif output that I would like to use to connect to my soundcard.
In order to do just that, I also bought an spdif/toslink converter. I did some tests on my sound system and everything works fine.
So I use the same setup and hook up the turntable to my X-FI titamium and ... no sound. At all.
Might be a problem with the soundcard. So I plug my dvd player to the soundcard using a toslink cable. Evreything works fine.
So my question is, why isn's an spdif/toslink converter working woth this soundcard while any other digital sources working? :smileysurprised:
I'm using Vista x64?SP2.
Any ideas?Yes, thank you, much more readable.
I agree that you should probably do a complete uninstall and reinstall. Use a driver cleaner if you have one you are familiar with, just in case. And you can try going into device manager and seeing if there are any Creative entries, and use the uninstall (with delete driver software option checked) function there.
Be sure to only use the drivers and software from the CD; there are not currently any downloadable Titanium drivers. There is an ALchemy and wavestudio update you can apply after you install from the CD, if you end up using either of those applications.
Post if you have further issues, but hopefully that will do the trick. -
Trouble with display settings for projector/Reactable
Hi,
I'm trying to install a musical hardware interface called the Reactable for use with my iMac, and I'm having trouble getting the correct display settings. It's designed to work with laptops and it works fine for the most part with my Apple Hackintosh, but I can't seem to get it working correctly with my iMac. The tech support from the Reactable company recommends that I use 1600x1200 resolution or 1024x768 (native) on the projector, but when I open my display settings I am not presented with either of those options. It only permits me to use 1024x768 and 1024x768 (stretched).
The only instance in which I can get the projection to cover the whole table is with 1024x768, but then the projection is too large. Do I need to change the scaling somehow? How do I do that?
Thanks,
Justin1080p. If you have a Mac Mini with an HDMI connector, connect direct through there.
Otherwise you'll need to look at either: Which Macs don't have audio over mini-Displayport connectivity, need either an
Apogee DVI To HDMI Converter / SPDIF Optical Toslink+Coaxial Input Output if you have a mini-DVI or DVI (The left connector is DVI, and the right connector is mini-DVI) connector and it is Intel.
Kanex iAdapt Displayport adaptor if you have a mini-Displayport ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/47/Mini_DisplayPort_on_App le_MacBook.jpg/300px-Mini_DisplayPort_on_Apple_MacBook.jpg
) connector.
Note, thunderbolt connectors look the same as mini-Displayport except they have the lightning icon symbol.
PowerPC Mac Minis, need a StarTech DVI2HDMIA connector together with an RCA minijack to red and white splitter cable. -
Floundering noob grovels for mercy
Hello!
Sincere apologies for the following rather long story, but apparently, I need help.
Recently, after despairingly throwing up my hands and deciding that no Windows DAW could ever possibly work, I have bought myself a 3 ghz quad pro and a copy of Logic Pro. Since I only record myself, I felt that the internal core audio deal should be quite sufficient for my needs, and also sprung for a Behringer ADA8000 "format converter", i.e. ADAT digitizer. I like to shy away from anything that requires a 'driver', if at all possible.
So I have fired up Logic and begun that learning curve, experimenting with loops and so forth and analyzing the results over the headphone jack on the front of the Mac. Now I want to start evolving the system to make use of the digital i/o via the lightpipe built into the Pro, which I have connected to the Behringer via optical cables.
But I can't get it to make a peep. I checked to box that says "use core audio", set up the digital i/o in that little audio/midi setup accessory (which crashes often, btw,) set the converter to 'slave' and changed the outputs of all the tracks in the project to "Audio 1/2", which is now all that's available in any case.
But for the life of me I can't find a signal at the converter's line output.
What am I missing? And how do I route stuff to channels 3-8 of the converter? TIA chrisWell don't I feel like the dweeb.
The specs for the Behringer say: "Digital Output. 1 x TosLink ADAT Lightpipe" and the specs for the Mac Pro say "Optical digital audio input and output Toslink ports" however, so perhaps I could be forgiven, on this, my first foray into optical sound, for believing that toslink was the same as toslink. <grumble>
Yes, I can return the Behr. Can anyone recommend an SPDIF to analogue converter?
Thanks, kids. -

Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

[CLOSED] snd-hda-Intel model mono/stereo and alsamixer issues
DROPPED: I just installed the Windows disc that came with the laptop and the official drivers, while they work better (a 6 channel wav plays fine in the speakers, linux only plays 2 of them) the most important issues like mono output only in the headphones jack is repeated. It seems the hardware problem. I don't know how I break it, but I did.
When I installed Arch linux about this laptop about two years ago everything was working OK. "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav" (and left) played in the corresponding speakers and headphones. "alsamixer" used to have two volume control bars per control, for left and right.
I can't pinpoint the moment but sometime in the last few months everything is playing as mono. Now alsamixer shows only one volume bar per control and "Master" can only to be (un)muted as mono. I can still mute the "Speaker" control individually using '<' and '>'. The "Headphone" volume control is ignored, neither volume nor mute work. And the strangest thing: when I mute the left Speaker it also mutes the headphones.
I never did any alsa configuration and so I'm assuming the model auto detection is broken. I tried a few model= options without luck. The problem is the laptop is brandless (pseudo-olivetti 750). Perhaps with some luck someone can help me identify which model should I use.
Physical Description:
The laptop has to on-board speakers and two jacks on the front, one labeled with a Microhone (slash) two things I cannot recognize and the other labeled SPDIF OUT (slash) Headphones. (I tried the only model described as 2-jack in the wiki guide without luck).

Thanks for any help, I tried most of the models listed as ALC883 (and some others) without luck, is there any other option that could cause this issues?

I assume the combination Vendor Id: 0x10ec0883 + Subsystem Id: 0x1584907e is what I should be looking for right? Google gave me three resuts from alsa project's DB: http://www.google.com/search?q=0x10ec08 … e&filter=0 resulting in two more models to try:
model=laptop (I'm almost certain I tried this already)
model=lenovo
I also didn't knew about alsa-info.sh so I downloaded, ran it and got this http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=9f7e7 … bf5c3ad9ea including:
!!DMI Information
Manufacturer: Standard
Product Name: L50IIX
L50IIX seems to be a board made by Uniwill and used by various companies which adds even more possible models:
model=uniwill
model=uniwill-m31
model=fujitsu
model=lifebook
model=fujitsu-pi2515
model=fujitsu-xa3530
It seems I have a lot of testing to do later, I will report back the results and hopefully will provide a solution for any lost soul who comes across this post in the future. Thank you.
