Speaker balance altered after reboot/sleep
Every time I reboot or start my Mac from sleep the speaker balance is altered and set to full right. I would guess there is a currupt settings file somewhere. Tired of adjusting speaker balance the first thing I do when I start my computer and need help to fix this.
Hello worldofkane,

[GNOME3] Volume Balance Lost After Reboot
Hello!
I'm using GNOME3 on a fully updated Arch x64 installation. After every reboot, the volume balance has shifted to the right. I have to enter the sound settings, output, and then restore the balance slider to the center.
The problem has been with me for some weeks now but I rarely reboot so I haven't suffered from it that much. However, now I am required to dual boot with Windows, and thus, this problem gets really annoying...
Any tips for what I could try? I have of course searched the Internet (including this forum).I don't run Gnome, so this might not work, but try this.
Once you have your volume/balance set the way you like, do (as root) from a terminal:
$ alsactl store
(If you have more than one sound card, you may need to specify that also, see the man page for alsactl.)
This will save your sound card settings to the file /etc/asound.state.
In your rc.conf, add 'alsa' to the DAEMONS line. This will run the script /etc/rc.d/alsa at start up which will run the command
/usr/sbin/alsactl restore
which loads the values from /etc/asound.state into the sound card, thus restoring your settings.
It is likely that Gnome may set the sound card some other way, and unfortunately, I can't help you in that case. -
BEFW11S4 wireless connection lost after reboot / sleeping
I am using the linksys wireless router BEFW11S4 version 4, firmware version 1.5, to connnect two winXP computers, one a desktop (wired) and one a laptop (wireless).
The wireless connection was created using the EasyLink Advisor software (support.linksys.com). The wireless connection made by this software to my laptop has no signal strength problems. A wired connection to my laptop also has no problems.
However, if a wireless connection is made, it is broken when my laptop is restarted or sleeps (power saving mode). The sysTray indicates a wireless connection that has "limited or no connectivity". I cannot browse the internet. The EasyLink advisor automatically detects a problem and prompts ot repair it. Though after a few steps the EasyLink Advisor indicates that a "wireless connection failed to be made", the sysTray shows a healthy connection, and it becomes possible to browse at this point.
I'm hoping to make a connection that doesn't need to be re-established every time I leave my computer. Has anyone experienced a similar problem?Carrot, thanks very much for your message. I tried updating the "firmware" -- is that what you meant by drivers?
By following the instructions at http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4030&lid=7771778881B05,
I upgraded the firmware which involved performing a factory reset on the router, and re-establishing the network using the EasyLink Advisor.
All of the steps were carried out easily according to the instructions and there were no hitches or exceptions. The wireless connection made was strong and usable. At this time I added my second (desktop) computer which has a wired connection, by following the "add another computer" wizard in EasyLink Advisor.
This completed the re-setup of my network with new firmware.
I then restarted my wireless laptop, and, unfortunately, the connection was lost, as usual.
any other suggestions?
Thanks again! -
Bluetooth fails to connect to mouse after reboot/sleep
My bluetooth mouse (an Arc Touch) fails to get connected when my MacBook Pro starts up or comes out of sleep mode.
So I reset the mouse and "pair" it again, removing the previous entry for it, and the mouse works again.
If I then power off and restart, it fails and shows up as "not connected".
Have to "pair" it again, every time.
This was working fine until I upgraded to OS X 10.2.2.
I've reset the SCM and PRAM with zero success.
Any further things to try?Ok Rb621,
Follow the same procedure as you have done before. Exception - At the restart, boot into Safe Mode. You don't have to log in. Wait a while, have something else to do. During this time, OS X will clear some caches. Come back and restart normally and see what happened.
Have fun

MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows
I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit running on a BootCamp partition on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3. When I first installed 7 last year, I initially had a strange problem in that the Mac wouldn't sleep (default settings) when rebooted back into OS X from BootCamp. If I did another restart in OS X, everything returned to normal. I never found a solution to the problem but after a while it went away and things worked properly. Now, after several months and for no good reason I can think of, the problem has returned. Everything works correctly in both OSs except for this. Any help would be appreciated.
CliveTried repairing BootCamp in 7, no change, don't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place.
Here is a section of the log after reboot from BootCamp and it says "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". This ONLY happens after a reboot from Bootcamp, after another reboot all goes back to normal. What could the "active remote login session" be?
From log:

MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows (again!)
This problem originally occurred about a year ago and no solution was found then but after a time, it simply went away. Well, now it's back: after a reboot into OS X (10.6.7) from Windows (7 Ultimate 64 Bit), my MacBook Pro refuses to sleep until rebooted a second time, after which it behaves correctly again. The Console log reports the following message: "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". I've disabled Growl and DropBox (possible suspects last time) to no effect, reset the SMC and PRAM, all the usual things. I've tried when connected to mains power or battery, on wired, wireless or no network at all and still the same problem. Sleep behaviour under Windows is correct. Hopefully the problem will eventually cure itself as it did last time but I would like to discover the reason and find out what this "remote login session" could possibly be. To reiterate, this ONLY occurs immediately after rebooting from Windows.

Lion takes 15 seconds to log in after reboot on Macbook Pro 13" (early 2011)
I have been having sluggish performance (repeated beachballs, etc.) on my Macbook Pro 13-inch (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM), which I bought this summer pre-installed with Lion.
I didn't migrate my old system, I just installed everything on my new machine. After about 9 years of OS X upgrades on various machines, I decided to start fresh and just installed my applications and transferred the data manually. It took some time, but I wanted it lean and clean.
Within weeks though, things were starting to slow down. This morning, it took over 15 seconds after reboot before I could even log in to my user account (I clicked on the icon for my account, and after 4-5 seconds it beachballed for 10 seconds before the field for the password "slid" into place).
I've tried checking and unchecking having Lion restore my previous session before rebooting; closing all applications before restarting; not closing applications before restarting. But consistently, right after logging in for several minutes, and then after several hours of use (and/or the next day, if I put my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down) opening, saving documents, viewing mailboxes after opening Mail, or even viewing folder contents in the Finder can take from several to 30+ seconds.
Here is the log from my most recent boot. I have Dropbox, LogMeIn, Default Folder, and Growl (the pre-App Store version), and I have Parallels (which I very rarely use), but I don't see why any of these would slow down my machine before I even log in. Besides this, I have pretty standard fair applications. I would very much appreciate any help/advice!

06/12/11 03:05:15,347 Microsoft Outlook: CFURLCreateWithBytes wAfter biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it. -
My Macbook was hacked by somebody right after activating downloaded VLC player.
I couldn’t control my machine. Every thing was messed up! Finally after reboot I realized that even my administration password was changed. Stupid hint I was able to reed: What located in box above low case ? I used my friends computer and founded hot to fix my problem using Unix commands to reboot in a single user mode. I founded a lot of different solutions which had prity the same beginnings but very complicated continuation, which, I understood will force me to cach during restoration anuther crap – time bomb in my mac! Finaly I did restor. somehow. But still feel somebodyies presents. Safary messed up – I will send you a log Itunes – messed up. Speaker in a top menu – grayed, and I can’t control my volume. But the most triky thing – bouth my Apple keybords – internal and mostly bluetouth external also working and typing wired! I am sorry for my spelling, because I cant check spell for Mac’s Word (in Microsoft it was F7) I have also several attacks from my neighbors by community I know their names, because they are somethere very close to me – I can see them throuth FI-FI connection. They often kick-me out from my place and started to use my resaurces. And also Mackeeper make me a hard time!
In Microsoft times u just reinstalled computer – clean installetion from corporate licensed disk. But now I am a beginner in MAC – I love it! But a lot of new and triky – at this way
Fore example – my goal – to do fool Macbook backup at external USB drive using boot srartup option and make my life yaser in case of crash. But now, I don’t know if I can trust recommended program Carbon copy cloner – Ms. Bombich?
I am very sorry for my spelling, because I feel somebodies presents, who playin with me.
Final question Do I need some antivirus Mac compatable which is update paches, service packs? How to map defolt documents folder not to a local, but to external USB?
Esquse me for a lot of questions, but I am beginner in MAC, and I LOVE it!
PS. Good news. Looks like Safari came back! Somebody, probably allredy helping!
But my interface qute different from original – so something still wrong!Didn't really read much at all of your post. Much, much too long, irrelevant details and & no paragraphs.

After reboot, iMac will not connect to wi-fi automatically
I very recently purchased iMac 27" with Intel i5. The issue is the wi-fi disconnects after rebooting the cpu. It doesn't connect automatically to the internet. It sees the router but I have to select it to connect. Although there is no need for me to re-enter the SSID password, it is a small inconvenience but I do not have to do this step for my other devices, like iPad, PC, etc. The wi-fi is there after waking up from "sleep" mode, so no issue here. I am currently using the OS X Lion. I also purchased the Mountain Lion but balked to install it yet because I read some reviews about it that it slows down some MacBooks (with retina). Could Mountain Lion have solved this wi-fi issue? Or should I take the iMac back to the store and let them fix it for me?
ML has caused more of this problem I believe.
Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click OK.
Also, turn off IPv6:
System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
Or whatever Interface you use.
If not take it back. -

Have a Mac Mini HD, since the latest spate of updates the HDMI audio stops working after a sleep.
A reboot will allow the audio output to work again but this is exactly why I abandoned Windows! So please FIX this ASAP.
Anyone else seeing this?Hi,

I am losing my iPhone's signal everytime it is rebooted, for example when it runs out of battery. Then, after boot up and after entering my PIN code, it keeps saying "no signal" and the only solution is to do a reset by pressing home+power buttons at same time.
Can this problem be solved?
P.S.: I've recently travelled to another country and used roaming.
I've already done a reset to my network settings.
Thank you all!Yes, alternate universe appears to be the most logical explanation. After months of no signal at all on the iMac, but great signal on the four other wireless connections, suddenly with no other changes or adjustments, simply doing a QuickTime update, causes the signal to re-appear during the update, to remain during multple reboots - even after rebooting in OS 9.2.2, and then rebooting again in OSX.4.6 the signal is still great - and even after five days the signal is still great - no signal fluctuating over the past five days (that had been a common phenomena before) - no signal drop offs during the past 5 days (that also had been a common phenomena). What? was it one of those wild coincidences, that at the precise moment that I was doing the QuickTime update, that actually an hideous, undetected RF Interference source chose that exact instant to stop interferring and to remain non-interferring until this present moment (doubtful) - or was it somehow related to software or to the update process? (I realize that this is not an attractive hypothesis, but is it remotely possible? - Of course, if it is in someway, that Apple wouldn't come out and say as much - not prudent -, but would attempt to correct it in a subsequent update)
---- So Gino, re-enter the real universe, don't speak these things, but be quiet and simply be satisfied that you have a good signal again - you'd be better off not even remembering that these other things even happened. -

Drastic drop in HD used space after reboot
So I just rebooted my computer after about 4 days of keeping it on (putting it to sleep when not in use), and my hard drive space dropped significantly. Before the reboot, I cleaned my system cache and had 30.70 GB used (according to MenuMeters), and after reboot I had 30.57GB used. That's a drop of about 130MB over a reboot. The last time I rebooted was after the latest security patch on Aug 1. The reboot took a significantly longer time than usual (usually takes about 5 seconds for shutdown without even loading the wheel, about 27 spins of the wheel on bootup, this time it took about 7 or 8 spins of the wheel on shutdown, and about 30 on bootup). Should I be concerned? Can anyone explain what happened? Over the 4 days, all I did was check e-mail, surf the web, and use MSN.
Actually, I'm a bit of a security nut. I know that some viruses (at least in the past) have worked by flooding your HD with crap and thereby not let you do things that use virtual memory or install any programs, and make your comp run overall really slowly. When I first installed MenuMeters, I noticed my HD space would fill even when I wasn't writing to it myself (not substantially, but 10+ MB at any given time). I asked Apple about this and they explained it was system cache files. Thus, to safeguard (or at least to make myself feel safer), I clean these folders once in a while to make sure something like that isn't happening to me. Of course, I know that if it did, I'd probably know instantly and couldn't really do anything about it anyway, but it makes me feel warm and cuddly inside.
And in case you're wondering why I'm so paranoid on one of the most secure OSes out there, I'm an ex-Windows and ex-Ubuntu user. Both OSes gave me issues on fresh installs (I'm talking fresh, like literally doing nothing but format, install, install drivers, and get system updates), so I trust nothing now. So far, though, I've been using Mac for 6 months and nothing serious has arisen *crosses fingers* so I'm trying to be a bit less paranoid, but it's hard when it's been almost a year since I chucked Windows and I'm kinda in that mindset. -
Trackpad Gestures stop working after screen sleep on OS 10.9.2 update
Trackpad Gestures stop working after screen sleep after OS 10.9.2 update. Anybody know why? Is there a process I can stop or reboot in the Activity monitor to refresh this? These gestures include launch pad, mission control and full screen swipes. Annoying.
Same problem same version. On a MB Air. I have every gesture turned on. When this happens I have same problem on Magic Trackpad and my MB Trackpad. If I quit the app part of the gestures come back but then stop again. The worst is scrolling. This one is a show stopper and always require quit and relaunch.

ASM not mounting after reboot of external storage
I have a setup with 4 internal drives and 12 external drives(external storage, multipath). The diskgroup was orignally created on the 4 internal drives and then the disk group altered to add the external storage. Everything was fine until the external storage array got powered down. Then we rebooted both boxes and ASM did not come up. I also see the HEADER_STATUS as UNKNOWN for all the external storage drives.
