Bought a new iMac today. OS X Yosemite  10.10.2
I migrated my data from my old iMac, no problems.
Now I try to listen to my music on iTunes.
I can't control the sound, speaker icon in the menu bar is greyed out.

why does my sound icon grey out and doesn't allow me to make changes on the system settings

When you go to System Preferences > Sound what does it say for Output? Have you had headphones plugged in? Sometimes the headphone jack gets stuck thinking it has something plugged in when there isn't anaything there. SMC also has something to do with Sound:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

I am not sure but unless the item is not phrased as a question, or does not have question in the Content it doesn not become active. I have seen this several times.  And its always appeared for me when the person was just declaring a statement. and not asking anything.

Re: Creative Cloud icon grayed out in menu bar.
    Please follow the mentioned steps:
    1.  Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE and rename it to OOBE.old
    2. Enable root account: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528 and log on to root
    3. Disable any security software if installed on Mac
    4.Delete opm.db file located at :MAC : ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
(opm.db file is present in your user library. This library is hidden from MAC 10.7 onwards.
So in order to locate that,
Click on Go at the top
    Select Go to folder
    type ~/library/
This will take you to the library folder and then you can locate opm.db file at Application Support/Adobe)
    5. Download CC desktop from www.creative.adobe.com and try to install it. Incase you are not successfull then please Check the Activity Monitor and see if AAM process is running, if yes then try to kill the process.opm.db file needs to be deleted in order to process further. WIN 7 and 8 (64 bit):
Rename OOBE to OOBE_old located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe
    Relaunch the Browser
    Go to https://creative.adobe.com/products/creative-cloud
Sign in with Adobe ID and password and download CC desktop app.

  • Facetime icon greyed out in contact list

I am runing 10.10.1 for my iMac and have the latest software on my Iphone 6.  The contact I would like to use FaceTime is in China and uses a iPhone 5.  My computer contact list shows the Facetime icon greyed out.  The same contact in my iphone has no indication of a Facetime option.  I have checked my settings for both messages and FaceTime.  I have used messages to communicate with this person.
Why can I not use FaceTime?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I would guess that something on your contact's end is the issue - can this person make Facetime calls to anyone?

  • "Motion 4" icon greyed out after upgrading to Yosemite - Did Yosemite break "Motion 4" in Final Cut Studio?

Against my better judgement (now that Apple has turned into Microsoft 10 years ago, breaking apps with every OS update, followed by radio silence from Apple, pretending like they didn't do anything), I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and noticed that my Motion 4 icon is now greyed out. Thanks Apple.
I still do the majority of my work in Final Cut Pro 7, with many, many, Motion 4 projects embedded in the timeline (so that I can change them in Motion and have them seamlessly updated in my Final Cut Pro project), including an unfinished feature length documentary on gay and lesbian history from 2000 BC until 1900 AD. Should I just throw the entire film into the rubbish bin? I would presume that Motion 5.1.2 is incompatible with Final Cut 7? So what am I supposed to do now?
1 - Downgrade to Mountain Lion (or heck, why not Snow Leopard?)?
2 - Switch to Adobe Premiere?
3 - All of the above?
    Thanks (for nothing, Apple).

After some peacefull time my system crashed completely on Friday!
I installed all from Scratch to make sure its not some old stuff that I carried on during migration.
It's not a problem with the motion files as I deleted all of them and XML export is still crashing!
The situation is, that after installing it all I got the same quicktime translation error again and I am quite angry about how Apple handles clients who are working on projects with the recent FCP story.
Unfortunately due to the problems in exporting XML I am not even able to switch to Adobe Premier as this is the only way to import there.
After a lot of testing I am quite sure, that this issue has to do something with an Apple Update release between June 2011 and now.
Conclusion: Final Cut Studio II is not working correctly anymore as it did before June 2011!!! Apple, Please fix this issue asap.!!!!

  • In "Messages", I can no longer use voice commands to enter the message. Mic icon greyed out.

I use the voice recognition (press the mic icon) capability for text messages regularly.  After the last iOS update, it's greyed out and doesn't allow me to use it anymore.
Is there a work around for this?

To use "dictation" as it is called, there are two requirements:
    1.  Siri must be turned on (Settings > General > Siri)
    2.  You must be connected to the internet.

  • Sound Icon Greyed Out - Midi AutoAggDevice auto-created

Whenever I restart my computer or log out/back in, the sound icon in the menu bar is greyed out. When I check the sound preferences in system preferences, it says that the output is: "AutoAggDevice". I gain back control after selecting "Internal Speakers". I have tried setting them as my default, but it always defaults to "AutoAggDevice".
I have gone into the MIDI preferences (Audio Midi Setup) and there are many extra devices, but when I try and remove them, they come right back after a restart. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't affecting my default output, but it is getting really frustrating.
I have also run a repair disk permissions to no avail.
Does anyone know how to permanently delete these auto-created midi devices or at least get the default audio setting to stay as internal speakers?
    Thanks.

  • Unreliable sound - speaker symbol greyed out and red light in 3.5mm jack

Had my MacBook for 3 years with no problems. But over the past few months, the sound has been very unreliable. It always works when external speakers are plugged in, but when using the internal speakers it's very temperamental. It will just suddenly grey out the speaker symbol on the menu bar at the top, and a red light is visible in the 3.5mm jack socket.
    Any ideas???

Your Mac believes that a digital audio cable is plugged in. You can use a toothpick or unbent paper clip to toggle the DA switch off. It's located along the side of the port, not at the back whence the light emanates.

  • Wi-fi icon greyed out and showing "No Network selected"

I have an iMac (20 inch; early 2009) running Lion and use an Airport Extreme as my router. The Airport Extreme is connected to my computer and all others in the home connect through it wirelessly.
Lately, if the Mac has been off or in sleep mode, when I wake it or turn it o, I'm still connected to the internet but the wi-fi icon is greyed out. When I click on the icon, it shows "No Network Selected" and then begins searching for a network. My network pops up as an available network, but I have to choose it each time.
This never happened until a couple days ago. I haven't made any changes to software, hardware, etc. and all software is up-to-date. The only thing I've done a couple days ago was a soft reset of the Airport Extreme, as my Apple TV was acting strangely. I pushed the reset button and everything was fine with the Apple TV.
No other devices or computers on the network are having any problem with the network.
Could the soft reset have done this? If so, what can I do get the wi-fi and the network to work together again? If not, any suggestions as to how to fix this?
Also, how do I determine the generation of the Airport Extreme? It was purchased in April/May 2009.
    Thanks very much.
    Sheri

Have you tried power cycling your wireless router? First step would be to turn it off, wait a minute and turn back on. Is this router supporting other wireless equipment, such as computers, and how are they working?
Do a hard reset on the iPad, hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears.
Reenter all of the network settings manually.
Then try to connect and see if it is working correctly.
Problems like this can be hard to separate router issues from iPad issues until you try several things on each.

  • Speakers suddenly stop working. Icon greyed out?!

    Hi all.
I started my laptop this morning to find that the speakers don't appear to be working. For no reason whatsoever. They were working last night. And now they're not.
I press the volume up, down and mute buttons and it does nothing. The 'overlay' comes onto the screen showing like it has max volume, but with a circle/cross underneath (imagine a no smoking sign).
In the top menu bar, the sound icon is there but it's greyed out so I can't do anything.
    Anybody help me please?!?

the same thing happened to me. I closed my laptop to take it upstairs to work some more and when I opened back up the sound icon was greyed out. I tried plugging in speakers and a headset and they work fine. I think that it is probably the logic board but I read here : http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2244270 that it could just be the internal switch. I have a late 2008 model and the post seemed to mention models of that date. Let me know if you figure this out.

  • Icons Greyed Out Sometimes

I have two users, running Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9 on Windows XP.  If they go to Windows Explorer and navigate to a file, open it, the Link Tool icon is greyed out.  If they open the Acrobat 9 software, do a File and then Open inside the software and find the same file, the icon is not greyed out.  What is causing this?  I can't find any answers online.  Thank you.

  • Lost audio, no sound, icon greyed out

I've got a 2010 MacAir that was upgraded to Lion about 6 months ago,  all was working well, except in the last week the Audio went out, The Sound Icon is greyed out and the Volume slider doesn't move. When I go to System Preferences/Sound the mute box is checked. Any input on how to repair? Thanks

Just to finish this (lame) thread:
Took the computer to the Genius Bar.  Needed a logic bar replacement.  Fortunately, have Apple Care, or whatever it's called.

  • CS5: Layer Link icon greyed out.

    Hi,
For some reason the "Link" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette is greyed out, and in the "right click" Options on any of the Layers have the "Link Layers" option greyed out.
No doubt this is due to some simple  brain fade misconfiguration on my part, but I haven't figured it out yet
