Speaker Icon - Menubar

Is there any way to add a "open sound system preferences" button to quickly switch between the sound output devices just by pressing the speaker icon in the menubar instead of going the longer way to system preferences? I often switch between Soundsticks and headphones and wonder why this button for system prefs is missing. In the menubar there are also the icons for screens and network and energy and there is always a button that brings up the preferences with one click.

Hi,
Have you try check and uncheck "show volume in menu bar" under Sound in System Preferences?
Welcome to the discussions.
Cheers.

  • How do I get the speaker icon to STAY in my system tray?

How do I get the speaker icon to STAY in my system tray?  Every time I mute the speakers, the icon disappears from my system tray.  I have a very difficult time getting it back, and I can never remember how I do it.  Can someone give me some helpful, easy to remember steps on how to KEEP the sound/volume icon in my system tray?  Thanks.

I did what you said.  There is not a "system icons to always show".  What it does say is "turn system icons on or off".  The one for the sound icon is greyed out and CANNOT be clicked on.  This happens every time I mute the speakers.
So, how do I get it back?

In the menu that said "turn system icons on or off", try clicking on the blue writing on the bottom left of that menu that says "restore default icon behaviors".

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • My ipod touch 4g is turning up or down by itself, and the speaker icon wont go away

Okay this first started yesterdy morning, when my ipod touch4g was acting funny it wouldnt turn off, so i thought if i plugged it in it would fix itself, so i thought restoring would help it,made it worse it started turning off and on apple logo came on a few times, now i got it where i can turn it off and on okay but now i cant seem to controle the volume, and the speaker icon is showing and wont go away, and when i try turning it down when i play a song or a video, it will turn back up by itself, or it will turn down by itself,
what would be the best way to fix this without taking it in? the nearest apple store is dallas and i dont wanna spend all the money in gas to go up there, and then see what arm and leg i gotta cut off to get them to fix it.
should i restore and resync it one more time or should i start saving for a new ipod along with the new computer im needing?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Go to the Edit -> Preferences-> Playback
In The bottom section of the page click the drop down menu by Play Audio Using and select Windows Audio Session or something other than "Direct sound" or whatever it displays. Click Okay. This worked for me! I hope it works for you too!

  • How can I get rid of the speaker icon?!

The speaker icon (labeled "sound effects") started popping up for no reason in the middle of the screen. It remains on the highest volume. When I lower the volume it climbs right back up to the highest. I have all the latest updates installed. I don't want to do a complete reset because I would have to reinstall everything. Is there another way to make that icon disappear?
There's another problem and maybe they are related. When the ipod runs on the battery only it gives a false reading. It shows the battery is almost completely depleted. However, as soon as I plug it in it shows 50% (it will charge completely if I leave it plugged in). Anyone want to take a crack at solving this?

% battery on an iPod is not accurate so what you seeing is not abnormal.

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.

  • After adding Apple TV, my itunes multiple speaker icon (airplay?) blocks speaker output on my pc.  Local speaker output will not highlight.  Any ideas?

After installing Apple TV on another TV, my Itunes on my PC will not output to speakers.  Apple TV added multiple speaker icon but it will not highlight "local computer".  I can check box but volume bar won't open and no sound comes through although speaker mixer shows signal.  Any ideas?

This same thing is happening to me on only my 2011 Macbook Pro. My other macs and iOS devices can all stream audio to my airplay devices (airport express and atv2) just fine.
On my Macbook Pro trying to play to 1 external speaker
Click the airplay button in iTunes (airplay logo lights blue)
    Select ATV2 or Airport Express
Airplay logo goes back to gray
No audio is played out of airplay
On my Macbook Pro trying to play to multiple external speakers
Click the airplay button in iTunes
    Select "Multiple speakers..."
Check the box next to ATV2 or Airport express
Check box "depresses" like I've clicked it, but the box is never checked
No audio is played out of airplay
Like I said, all of these things work perfectly on all of my other apple devices. It's just this one Macbook Pro that it's failing on. It seemed like it just started failing a month or so ago. It's driving me bonkers!

  • Cannot get a home connection and the speaker icon illuminates each time

I cannot get a reception at home sometimes. When this happens, the speaker icon illuminates. Is this Apples way of idenfiying the problem.

I start to appologise that is was not the `speaker` icon, but the earphone icon, that was illuminating when my iphone4 would not work. Now, thanks to info from a contributor the problem has been resoved. The problem appears to have been caused by small grit or other tiny matter getting into the earphone jack. After several unsuccesful attempts to clear it by inserting the ear jack, I left the jack in overnight. Problem solved!  Many, many thanks .

  • Multiple speaker icon missing

The multiple speaker icon is not visible in lower right hand corner of iTunes.  How do I get it to show up?

It is very easy to answer. That feature is gone. Now Safari has tabs to open new web pages. The + sign on the far right of the tool bar will open a new blank tab. You can also still tap and hold down on a link on a web page an select -  open or - open in new tab. You can set the tabs to open in the background or turn that setting off and the new page will open in a new tab and make that the current web page so you do not have to select it.
You cannot change any settings for Safari to use the old multiple pages icon. It no longer exists. If you need that feature, download iCab. It will let you open multiple pages that way, and you can use tabs if you like. With iCab, you can swipe left to right to move from one open web page to another which is just one of its many nice features.

  • My Speaker icon has been disabled...how to get it back?

I am having on going issues with my computer but the latest is there is no speaker icon in my top desktop menu. Even when I try to raise the volume on my keyboard it shows a circle with a slash in the middle of it. I went into System Prefs and made sure the speaker was not muted. I do video editing and I have speaker monitors hooked up to my tower. My computer will ONLY boot in Safe mode for some reason as this has to do with the ongoing issues I am experiencing. So this might be why the speaker or volume control has been disabled.

the speaker of my macbook mutes all at a sudden for few seconds automatically and comes back even the speaker icon which is on top right side of the computer also shows mute at this point. and when the volume of the speaker is pressed at this moment it shows locked symbol of the speaker. Kindly help how to resolve this. I am not sure but recently I did install leopard to upgrade my computer does this effect the problem with my speaker.

This is all most unfortunate...from what I read in your post you have covered everything that can be done at your end....something is damaged on the Logic Board it sounds like...as to how much it would cost only the people that end repairing will know after it is diagnosed....take it in...tell them what you have found and tried so far...maybe that will help narrow down the problem...
    Good Luck....

  • Speaker icon is gone. why did everyone lose their sound 9/17?

Can anyone help get my speaker icon back and help me permanently block Funmoods. I have uninstalled, added malware, and it still somehow creeps back onto my computer

    Hi
Right click in the task bar near the time display and you will get a pop up menu.
Click on properties. Under Notification Area Click Customize select Show icon and notifications
Under system icons to always show, check volume.
    Click Apply.
Also, if you don't want inactive icons to be hidden, make sure that box is not checked.
