Speaker problem/distorted sound

I'm having trouble with the sound output on my 17-inch Powerbook G4. Specifically, the sound doesn't appear to be coming out of both speakers at once, and when the volume up/down keys are pressed, the computer has a tendency to put out a horribly loud static sound. This is not a consistent problem; sometimes I can adjust the volume without incident; at other times, adjusting the volume a few steps either way will get rid of the static (but still doesn't fix the balance issue). Since I'm not close to an Apple store, I thought I'd give the forums a try. Any suggestions? I'll be happy to provide more details if needed.

PowerBooks 17" have separate sound card, often sound problems are caused by the sound card.
you could try reinstalling the OS (archive and install option) but it probably won't do any good.

  • 5.1 Speaker Problems - No Sound from rear/

So I have recently reinstalled windows XP and I just found my xfi cd to day and I installed the drivers / audio panel.
When I did the speaker test while setting it up, the only sound that would come out is from the front left / front right speakers. No sound at all from the sub/rear.
The weird thing is, when I am listening to other audio, there is a tiny bit of sound coming through the rear speakers.
The problem is not with the speakers, they worked perfectly before I reinstalled and I did not touch them at all while doing that.Message Edited by bobby77 on 05-03-200702:42 PM

  • Tecra A4 Speaker Problem (Cracking Sound)

Hi there... its been a month since i have purchased Tecra A4 Model... I am pretty happy with its performance except its speakers... They make a cracking sound while playing most of the songs... What should i do? (I connected headphones and this noise does not come) Please help me... Thank You!

    Hi,
I believe that your problem is highlighted in the Toshiba Knowledge Base. The solution is to update the SoundMAX drivers to the latest version in the Downloads section.
I had this problem and got rid of it after installing the new drivers.
Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.
    Cheers
    Khim.

  • Inspire P7800 Headphone mic is getting speaker feedback which distorts sound

My P7800 works fine my problem is in a game I get distorted sound from speaker feedback to the mic. Any solution?

    Heh,
Well one of the reasons I bought the speakers was because my friend gave me a copy of FarCry he got bundled with something he bought. But now FarCry wont install heh, so I can't test it on that. I am trying to think of other games I have that use surround..hmm maybe HL2 does. I will do some more testing and wait a couple days to see what you guys think. If worst comes to it I will just buy a soundcard aimed at 7.1 .
    Thanks for responding jimby

Try going into your settings and 'reset all settings'
You will need to retweak your device but it's been said to help with sound issues.

  • Centre Speaker Problem with Z-5500 and X

When I have entertainment mode enabled (not sure if its the mode's problem or not) the centre speaker doesnt play alot of the music (I heard the voices are supposed to come from centre while ambience comes from the other speakers) most of the sound is coming from the other 4 speakers. Also, when the song gets real intense (or a word starting with "s" is said) the speaker starts to crackle and fizzle, and it makes me think the speaker is dieing or not able to handle that sound. However, when I enable game mode and play counterstrike or such, with the volume pretty high (about halfway for the Z-5500 is deafening) I can shoot and throw grenades and such but the centre channel (which plays alot more sound then when Im playing music) doesnt crackle or fizzle, it handles pretty much 80% of the sound) I especially hear the crackling/distortion or whatever it is when Im playing System of a Down's Chop Suey, when he says the line "self righteous suicide" it crackles and causes a fuzzy sound when he says it, and some other songs have parts of it when this happens. Just wondering why the X-Fi is causing this (i dont think its the modes problem cause I have the problem with game mode too) but it cant be the speaker as it works perfectly fine in game.

Hows it going mate. i have a very similar setup to you and have the same problem. the sound only comes out of the front and centre speakers. even the surround sound comes out of the fronts. this is because the vista drivers do not support dolby digital or dts. lol what a waste of money. there is no warnings about this when you purchase the card. i am appauled at this. It is false advertising.

  • Distorted sound in CQ-45 137tx

Hi there, hear some distorted noise while playing music or videos in my laptop. This sound prevails in both Vista Home Basic x86 ( Previous os) and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Current OS). The sound comes in both the speakers and the headphones. I have updated the audio drivers (i.e latest driver from hp, and updated using windows optional updates)
I kindly request you to give me a solution for this! Thank you in Advance. Prompt reply awaited!

    Hi there,
As per boosting your bass try this method listed here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/5668647-post3614.html
Its for a different HP model but its practically the same..
Also in addition to above try going into IDT Audio Control Panel and making sure all the  volume sliders including for headphones are on max
Regarding disabling power management, thats very interesting it might be the solution to the problem.. it might if it somehow lowers your speaker power during playback, please let me know if this fixes it as I have the same issue of distorted audio though doing some steps ilke above have decreased how occasional it is..I'll try it too i guess hehe
The only downside I see is well it'll certainly drain more battery power as audio will now use as much power I guess needed to play music etc.
Update: On my power management i have both Basic Power Management and Advanced Power Management however I didn't access it though any customize tab (I didn't see one?), i accessed it through IDT Audio Control Panel -> Preferences tab up top -> On the left Settings then underneath it General. Also for description under Advanced Power Management it states "Notice: PC Beep will be disabled while this feature is in use. Small but audible clicks and pops may be present while this feature is in use" meaning this could be the culprit for your distorted sound
Say thanks by clicking the "Kudos! Star" which is on the left.

  • Imac DV G3 (PPC) speakers suddenly distorted sound output

HI everyone, I just bought an old iMac DV running OS9, and it worked just fine for a few days then - for no reason whatsoever, the stereo speakers suddenly produce very distorted sound, even at low volume. At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
When it happened, I was just installing a few things with the volume set low, and the alerts suddenly sounded very distorted and remain that way. I didn't blow the speakers by playing loud music or anything like that.
I had nothing to lose, so I reformatted/installed new system but the problem remains.
My guess is that this is an electrical/hardware problem just down to plain old age, perhaps a bad solder joint or something. It's not the end of the world but it just seems strange that it happened so abruptly I did not move or thump the computer in any way.
It's an iMac DV from 1999, given it's age I'm not expecting miracles, but just wondering if anyone else ever had a similar problem and managed to fix it without pulling the computer apart and replacing a hardware component which is way too much hassle!
Were these models' speakers ever known to suddenly crap out with no warning?? Some older macs had design flaws they became notorious for (I'm thinking of my Ti Powerbook G4 hinges, I had that once!)
Is that extra button on the side booting into open firmware of any use? Just a stab in the dark!!!!
    Any ideas/insight anyone?
    Thanks!!!

At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
That is normal. If they don't move, they don't work.
However, it could be that someone else overloaded the speakers and caused them to fail. I think the first step is to see if the speakers have been damaged. Use a pair of external speakers or headphones and test the sound.
Failed speakers in G3 iMacs are not a wide probelm like the one you mentioned, or bad capacitors in eMacs. Generally, the failure mode is the passive cooling (read, "no cooling") system baking the PAV board until some part of it fails.

  • IPhone 4 speaker crackle/distorted

A couple of days ago my iPhone 4's built-in speaker got this real bad crackling/distorted sound, it honestly sounds like the speaker is blown.  The sound doesn't go away as I turn the volume down.  This happened over night, I noticed it when my alarm went off in the morning.  I do listen to music (usually Pandora) and watch YouTube videos, but it's never caused a problem in the year I've had it.  Has anyone had this problem or have any idea about what I should do?  I live about 2hrs from the nearest Apple Store so I can't just make a quick trip.

UPDATE -- Woke up this morning (luckily before my alarm) and there is now no sound coming out of the speaker at all.  When I have my earbuds plugged in, the sound comes through fine.

  • Distorted sounds in Windows 7 32 bit

    Hi...
I re-installed my system with (Dutch) Windows 7 32 bit and used the "Vista" driver CD for my SB X-fi Music card.
When I play MP3 or WAV files, the quality is reasonable, however, some sounds, specially vocals, are damped by the bass-tones.
When I play a CD in my Plextor 80SA dvd drive, I get a very distorted sound.
Doesn't matter if it is a burned CD or a original CD from the music store.
I think that the output from my DVD dri've is to high, but I don't know where I can change the output level.
Also tried the latest updated drivers for the X-fi card, but that has no change in the sounds, cd's are still distorted and basstones in MP3 and WAV damp the vocals and other instruments.
Don't know what to do...please, someone with advise?
    Grtz.

Using earphones, the same thing happens, the bass tones dampen other sounds.
I tested the speakers with the Creative Diagnostics application and there seems to be nothing wrong with them, even when I pump up the volume to 80 or 90% of the max volume there is no distortion at all in the speaker system.
I have ripped a CD and played the saved MP3 or WAV?files, they do the same as downloaded MP3 WAV files, bass tones dampen the other sounds. Sometimes the first two or three songs played, are all fine but then it slowly starts to happen... In other occasions, it happens immedaitely.
I have two identical dvd drives in my system (running on Windows 7 Ultimate) and used the second (hardly used) spare drive, also a Plextor 80SA, to play a legal bought CD and this one gives distorted sounds too! Volume doen't matter, by the way, distortion is also present on low volumes.
I must add to this that, when I was running Windows XP Professional with SP3 on my system, none of the above happened... It all started after re-installing my system with Windows 7 Ultimate.

  • Distorted sound on iMac with Windows 7

    Hi,
I've just upgraded from Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium.
Before the sound worked perfect, but now it is very distorted.
When I mute windows I can still hear sound - it is just a bit more distorted and at a bit lower volume.
I tried to upgrade the sound card driver from Realtek, but lost sound completely. I reinstalled the Apple driver and now I have distorted sound again.
I'm running Boot Camp 3.1 drivers.
Does any one know how to solve this problem?
    /Tejs

Can you find out which drivers you currently have for me please.
go to Start >> right click Computer >> System Properties >> System >> Device Manager
Now open up the sound, video and game controllers section and there should be something correlating to your sound driver here, if you could give me the name or the driver name if possible.
also what iMac model are you running.

  • Solved my scratchy speaker problem. Do a hard reset. Home, sleep button. Hold till screen goes blank.

Had a scratchy speaker problem and strange sounds when ipad shutdown. Hold the home button and sleep button till screen goes blank. Turn on after a minute or two. Fixed it on ipad 4. Good luck.

Apple replaced with new phone under warranty, had to haggle a little to get that done.  Set up new one as a new phone, not from a backup, so as to not transfer any possible software issues to the new one, still re-setting up everything...      all was good for the first week or so, now this one does the same thing, plus a new issue.    While on calls the screen will go black, and the absolute only way to get control of the phone again is to hold both buttons down until the apple logo appears and phone restarts. Additionally, sometimes it will now become unanswerable when receiving a phone call, has only happened on vibrate, but it will go into a continuous vibrating mode and no way to answer the call or stop it, other than the two button restart.  Does it on normal calling, and on 4g lte calling setting (verizon).

  • Distorted sound on M30-604

    Hi,
I have got a problem with the sound on my Satellite M30-604. If for instant I play a cd or an mp3 (doesnt matter with what program), the sound is distorted. It sounds a bit like back in the old days when my taperecorder got jammed. After a while the sound disappears completely and I get bad sound driver errors. When I restart the notebook, the sound again works fine for a while, but then the problem repeats itself. This temporary regeneration only happens when I restart and does happen when I put the notebook in sleeping mode or standby mode for a while. The sounddriver in my notebook is the SigmaTel C-Major Audio version 6.14.1.3835, it should be the latest version. Can anybody help me with this problem? At the moment I am not even shure whether it is a hardware or a software problem. Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve
I hope that there is some solution that will help you. Did you already try to make BIOS update? It will be interesting to know what you mean exactly under distorted sound. A friend of mine had a similar problem and the cause for that was modem. Sounds stupid but everything is possible.
Like I said if the sound is slowed it can be some hardware mailfunction.

  • In-Ear Headphones distorted sound

    Hi,
Yesterday, 21 days past my one-year warranty, the right in-ear phone now produces distorted sound when the volume is raised.
I have replaced the mesh cap as recommended, but to no avail.
It only the right speaker and is directly related to higher volume.
    Has anyone experienced this?
If so, what was your solution?
    tia,
    Bob

    hi,
if you own an iPhone 3GS and is covered by Apple Care or limited warranty your in-ear headphones get warranty too
