Speakers and Communicat​ion Device Playing at the same time.

HP Pavillion DV7 Notebook Win7 64 bit, Beats
When I plug in a headset while on Skype, Skype sound comes through my headset with no issue.
When I begin to run an additional program, a video game, a web browser or media player.  That sound comes through my computer speakers and not through the headset.  Skype sound continues to come through the headset.
I can see that the additional programs (all but skype) are listed under the volume control as assigned to "Speakers and Headphones" and that Skype is assigned to "Communications Device."
In some cases I am able to resolve the issue and force the sound through the communications device by disabling the speakers.  Which is a satisfactory solution in some cases  When I do this however some aplications malfunction as they cannot identify a sound device.  Netflix won't play, despite loading successfully and windows media player will not play some files.  
It's sort of funny how frustrating some seemingly simple issue has become.  I get the same results regardless of which audio out jack I plug into.
I just want to tell my computer, "Hey bro... when I plug in the headphones, just go ahead and send me all my sound through to my ears that way."
Any help anyone has would be appreciated, I've exhausted all of my own options.  Fiddling with sound controls, beats audio controls, skype audio options, driver updates.  There isn't even a way to tell which applications you want to go where, as far as I can tell.  The only thing I've done that has resovled anything is disabling the speakers when I want to run skype with something else and that doesn't work in every case.
