Speakers/Headphones Emitting "clicking/popping" Noise

I am having a really hard time explaining this, so please bear with me while I try to explain it.
I purchased my macbook pro at the end of January. A few weeks later, I noticed that there was a "clicking" or "popping" noise coming from the laptop. Thinking it was the hard drive, I kept a close ear to the computer, only to realize when I had my headphones on that the noise was coming from the speakers.
The noise comes at random and is just a random series of clicks/pops. I cant seem to figure out what is causing this issue. This happens regardless of whether I am plugged in to a wall outlet or on battery, eliminating the possible cause of a power issue. This leads me to a possible hardware issue in the sound card.
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue? Is this something I need to take to the Genius bar to have looked at? Its gotten very annoying as I'm a bit of an audiophile and it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Thank you in advance for your help - it's much appreciated!

Ok I'm not sure if we're having the same issue now. What my problem was I would hear a ticking sound at random moments, usually twice at a time. I did some further research myself after going to the Apple Store and them not finding anything that stood out. It turned out to be the (SMS) Sudden Motion Sensor that I was hearing. Random annoying little sound that I could also hear in my headphones. I usually work on my laptop on my lap and it moves a little bit at a time and shifts largely when i get up or move around. Sudden and distinct movements activate SMS which is intended to save your HDD and its data from damage from being dropped. I was able to find instructions on how to disable it to do some testing and that confirmed it. So I'd recommend checking this link out. This might be the issue you've been having as well. Good Luck.

  • Horrible clicking/popping noise

I opened up my 12" G4 PB this morning and an awful racket ensued. I immediately restarted but the nose did too. The clicking/popping is coming from the the back left, near where the power cord connects. Removing the cord makes no difference - the only thing that quiets it down is putting the book to sleep. It does not seem to be louder or faster when the book is working hard but keeps up a steady rat-a-tat-tat when it is awake. It does not sound like a fan to me. The book seems to be functioning normally otherwise but the noise is really loud and totally obnoxious.
I bought this book refurbished from small dog about 6 months ago. It has always made a funny noise when awaking from sleep - hard to describe but I had never heard a Mac make a noise like that and I found it kind of endearing. Now I wonder if there is a connection to what I am now experiencing.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi sandyfeet -
It may be your fan as it is located in that area ...however your fan would not normally come on unless you've been working your powerbook for a while (it getting warm).
If the sound was coming from the 'front' left then it may be the drive that could be on it's last legs. Have you noticed any performance issues lately that would indicate a failing drive?
Perhaps the people you bought it from could open it up quickly to better see what the problem is ...it wouldn't take all that much time.

  • Low clicking, popping noise..

    Hi
Ive had my iMac g5(iSight) for about a week now and Im loving it..the last couple of days Ive noticed a low clicking sound coming from underneath the screen..its hardly noticeable but its there...every 30 seconds or so theres a little click sound. Is this normal?

Brian, sounds just like the normal sounds of a hard disk to me. Dependent upon how much RAM you have installed, the computer will access the hard drive as "virtual" memory more or less frequently (more RAM = less access). The more programs you have running, the more the computer will have to access the hard drive. How much RAM does your computer have?
As long as the computer runs normally, I think you're just fine.
    Cheers,
    Jason

  • Audio question, clicking/popping when adjusting volume?

    Hi all,
I returned my last touch because of loud hissing when headphones are plugged in. I notice it on higher quality headphones. when i move the volume slider i also hear this clicking/popping noise. Does anyone else hear that when they move the volume slider up and down or is an indication of a problem? it almost sounds like a poor sound effect. any thoughts would be helpful.
be sure to pause the music/movie when testing...

^^^ same here, no hissing but faint pops when adjusting the volume when a song is on pause in the 3/4 to full volume range. Never noticed it until I saw this thread though.

  • Clicking/Popping problem!

First off, I am using a 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro with 2 GB of RAM as my computer and the Presonus Firestudio Project firewire interface as my interface.
My problem is when I record enable my track, 50% of the time my guitar sound (that is plugged straight in) has a serious series of clicking/popping noises along with the sound of the guitar.
One time it was working fine and then once I added a distortion effect to it, the clicks came.
The clicks are there when I am recording (when software monitoring is enabled) and when I listen to my recorded track in logic. However, when I bounce the song to my desktop, the file is without the clicks.
If I were to use just the macbook's built in mic, this problem would never happen. Also, the same problem occurred on my old macbook as well. Any ideas??
    Much Thanks

    Also,
If you're not using the latest driver uninstall the driver you are using by deleteing any files related to Firestudio. I don't know if Spotlight will show you all of them. I use a free application called "Easyfind"
Install the latest Presonus driver, in the Firestudio Project's mixer applet, look in the menus for "safety mode" and set it to safety mode 1.
Always install Firewire/USB hardware with the unit unplugged (FW/USB) from the computer, after the drivers are installed plug in the firewire or USB cable and let the computer find the hardware.
How are you monitoring the guitar?

  • 2010 MBP black hinge backs popping noise

While I was cleaning the bottom of my screen today, I noticed some popping. After pressing around for a while, I found out that if you press or rub against the black hinge below the screen it makes a clicking/popping noise that I've never noticed before. It doesn't happen when I open or close the lid (as far as I know), but it is a little annoying while I clean it. I tryed to replicate the same noise on a MBA with no success, leaving me to think that this is not a normal noise. Anyone have any suggestions?

    No worries.
My previous MBP did this after a few months. I noticed it when I was cleaning the screen, too.  My current 2011 MBP doesn't have it yet but I anticipate with age it will.  Hope you're enjoying your Mac.

    Hello Stacey,
What all devices do you have connected?
It sounds like a Ground loop... voltage leaking somewhere.

  • Bad clicking popping sound when macbook plugged into external speakers

I have a black MacBook Core Duo, a white Macbook Core 2 Duo, and a Macbook Pro Core Duo that are suddenly ALL exhibiting horrible behavior when plugged into external speakers using the 1/8th inch headphone output converted to RCA to connect to the speakers.
I have always known that sometime in the last year or 2, one of the OS updates introduced a popping noise when the audio system has been idle and then suddenly fires a sound again after being quiet for a while.
But now all 3 of these machines, all running 10.6.7 with all current available software updates are exhibiting a clicking / popping /crackling sound almost CONSTANTLY when hooked up to the same set of speakers I've had for years. I tested with other speakers just to make sure the noise is still there.
Every time someone goes on or offline in my ichat buddy list, the crackling noise that accompanies the typical buddy available/unavailable sound is extremely irritating.
Every time I hit the volume up or down button I hear the awful noise alone with the volume feedback sound. If I keep hitting volume up or down FAST repeatedly, the sound goes away. But the moment I stop doing anything for even 1-2 seconds, and then touch the volume up/down buttons again, the cracking sound returns.
I have no idea what software update introduced this problem or what the heck is going on. I have booted these machines from external drives with a fresh install of 10.6.7. I've tried 10.5.8. Nothing works.
It's like some kind of firmware has permanently screwed up the 1/8th inch output on all of these machines when hooked up to external speakers. And these are all completely different model laptops
I do not hear the noise through these laptops' internal speakers, or if I plug headphones directly into their headphone jacks.
I have had to install an M-Audio USB Micro onto my main laptop to use it's 1/8th inch stereo out to connect to my speakers in order to eliminate this horrible noise. But this should NOT be necessary and I am not satisfied with this fix as a permanent solution.
I'm astonished to find this problem on ALL THREE of these different laptops suddenly.
The Anti Pop program did not alleviate the problem. Please help. Apple please issue software fixes to get rid of these problems once and for all.

  • Macbook Headphones Pop Noise

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Macbook 13" Retina.  Thus far, the machine has been working wonderfully.  However, I was listening to an online course via headphones today and noticed that, if I stop or pause the audio... after 30 seconds to a minute or so, there is a popping noise.  Seems to happen each time there is any audio and it is then stopped.
Not a big deal, but I want to make sure there is nothing wrong with my system.  From what I've researched, this may be the audio driver going to sleep to save on battery life.  If that's all it is, I'm fine with the sound.  Has anyone else with a Macbook noticed this or has any other information?
    Thanks,
    Tom

This sounds like a hardware problem but first lets try going to "Audio MIDI Setup" in your Utility folder and checking the settings.
An just to make sure you plugged your guitar into the mixer (no amp in between), mixer (line out / tape out) is plugged into macbook Line in.

  • Popping noise while sleeping

I started to notice a "popping" noise (about 1 Hz) when I got external speakers for my Mac Mini. It occurs when the Mac is sleeping and the external screen is on (but sleeping its own "sleep").
If I disconnect the analog audio out (from where the external speakers take their signal) the popping ends.
If I connect headphones to the same jack, I hear no popping in them.
If I hit the power button on the external screen and power it down, the popping ends. It will not return eventhough I power the screen on again.
If I disconnect the USB cable that power the speakers from the Mac, the popping ends, but returns when I connect again.
Any clue to what this problem comes from? Some kind of ground loop?
    /BE

Seems we've isolated the problem to Electrical at least. Sounds like a Ground loop somewhere.
    See this nice article...
    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov04/articles/computerproblems.htm
Audio equipment which uses a double-insulated design needs no earth connection, and so is less susceptible to earth-loop problems. Such equipment will often use two-core mains cable, which has an oval cross-section, and the mains plug will sometimes use a dummy plastic earth pin, as shown here.
Disconnecting the earth wire inside a mains plug might solve an earth loop problem, but it's a dangerous solution, because you're removing an essential electrical safety measure.
And my best guess at this point is the PSU for the Speakers.

  • Pop Noise from Audio Out While Using iTunes 9.0.1

I have a black MacBook with Leopard 10.5.8 and iTunes 9.0.1. I have a a pair of computer speakers plugged to the MacBook's audio out minijack. Every time I run iTunes to play my music everything goes fine until I stop the music (you know with the space bar or the stop button). 30 seconds after I stop the music a loud pop noise comes up and stops, as if some electrical device was receiving a charge of electricity. When I play music back again on iTunes, the same noise comes up again with the music and goes away immediately while the music continues all right.
This is what I have done so far:
Change my energy saving parameter to several different configurations (perhaps the hard drive stopping when unused was the cause) but none fix it.
Turned off Airport...did not fix it
I timed the pop noise and it happens exactly 30 seconds after I stop my music on iTunes and then again 30 seconds after music has been stopped unless I start playing the music back again and the pop noise sounds again.
Any help would be appreciated as I use my MacBook to play music sequences for my band (I am the drummer) so the darn noises come through our PA system (and I also tried my small computer speakers and it does the same thing).
    Thanks,

I spent a good amount of time reading several discussions. Apple is aware of this issue but no solution as of yet. The popping noise is "normal" behavior and happens because of how the sound system is programmed in the computer.
The solution (sorry for the bad news) is to not use the audio out minijack at all. Instead, get an audio interface that connects to your USB port and then route the output signal from your audio interface to your speakers, headphones or PA system. The popping noise will not sound. I tested it several times.
If the only cable you have is a minijack male type then go to Radio Shack and get adapters. I had to get me an adapter that takes two RCA males and converts them to a female minijack type.
    Good luck.

  • Popping noise after export

So my song plays just fine in GarageBand, but when I export to iTunes, there are some popping noises that come in (very subtly) at the same parts in the song. Here are some troubleshooting things I've already checked:
    1) It is not my speakers -- I've tried two different pairs of headphones, and another set of speakers.
    2) I do not have the decibels amped in the GarageBand edit.
    3) I've tried reducing the decibel levels to all negatives, and it still pops in the same spots.
    4) I've tried exporting the song in all different formats, compressed and uncompressed.
Anyone know of something else that might work? Thanks!

Did you change your song's tempo after recording? If GB has to re-render a sound file, it often introduces artefacts.

  • Popping noise on Creative 6600's / Audigy

    Hi there,
I've been using this configuration for a while now and haven't had any problems with it. Until now.
The speakers seem to have developed an annoying popping noise, but it only happens in 3 out of the 6 satellite speakers. The noise is the same level no matter what the speakers are set to on their wired remote, and only stops once the speakers reach volume 8, and then the sound is awful because the speakers can't actually cope at that level.
I've taken apart the little remote and cleaned everything out which seemed to stop the problem for about 60-20 seconds, then it started again.
The noise will stick around for a few hours and then dissapear for a couple of minutes ata time, before coming back to annoy me again.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? Thanks in advance...
    Stom

My Powerbook G4 12" makes a popping noise before and after (there is usually a delay after a sound is played) a sound is played through the built-in speakers. It could be that when your Powerbook goes to sleep, the speakers were activated and then they are "turned-off," which results in a popping sound. To test if this is the case, plug in a pair of headphones and put the Powerbook to sleep. If it doesn't make the popping sound, it is just the built-in speakers. If it still makes the sound, then the problem lies elsewhere.
