Speakers/Headphones Not Working?

I have my guitar plugged in, and that is working fine. But when I plug either headphones or speakers into my Macbook the sound coming out of Garage Band stops, yet other computer sounds still come through the speakers/headphones. What's up?

You need to choose the output source in Garageband > Preferences > Audio Midi.

  • [ Windows 7 64-bit ] External speakers / headphones not working

    Hi,
I just upgraded from a MacBook 13.3" (Late 2008) to the brand new MacBook Pro 13.3" (Mid 2010). Sound wasn't a problem in Windows 7 64-bit on the old MacBook, but the new MacBook has somehow messed up the line-out signal to my external speakers (and headphones).
I obviously already tested everything in OSX and didn't find a problem. The internal speakers also work fine in Windows 7 64-bit, but as soon as I connect external speakers (and headphones) in Windows 7 64-bit there's just silence. The speakers are powered, and the playback sound device information (and the volume bars) suggest that all sound devices are working normally, i.e. Speakers, Headphones and +Digital Audio (S/PDIF)+. The chipset is Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 13).
Has anyone else come across this issue, and if so, how did you solve the problem?

    Hi,
After googling for two days, I finally found a workaround for my macbook pro 15'' (macbookpro5,3).
I had sound on Windows 7 64bits (with volume ok) and without the red light problem, but i couldn't hear anything from my tv with sound cable connected to headphones. My current version of bootcamp is 3.1 (with all drivers installed from it).
I tried all kind of things (drivers from vista64, xp, bootcamp 2.2, realtek, other versions of cirrus drivers, etc.) with no luck. THE SOLUTION FOR ME WAS TO INSTALL LATEST DRIVERS FROM NVIDIA (YES, graphics drivers) OVERRIDING THOSE FROM BOOTCAMP 3.1. After macbook restart, MY EXTERNAL SPEAKERS STARTED WORKING!!!
    Hope this helps to anyone.

  • My ipod speakers are not working unless I have my headphones plugged in?

So I accidently dropped my ipod in the toilet:( i immediently turned it off and put it in a bag of rice. When i came to get it out of the bag i noticed that my speakers were not working and when i turn up the volume it says i have my headphones in, and when i plug my headphones in the speakers work fine. I found out that there was some rice lodged in the headphone jack but i got it out with a needle and my ipod still thanks the headphones are in? I dont know what else to do, Please Help!!

Have you tried the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost
FIX for iPod Touch Home Button: Apple Support Communities
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still a problem you have a hardware problem. It could be the headphone jact or something else.

  • My laptop speakers are not working but my headphones work fine

I have an HP Pavilion g6-1d73us laptop and although my headphones work properly the speakers do not. This is a recent problem.  I have tried troubleshooting with windows troubleshooter with no results. I have checked all the drivers for audio and they check out fine. I have tried driver software with no success. Windows Media Player does not work. I get an error message when I try to use it. What else can I try?   Carl

    Hello @hifive11,
I have read your post on how your notebook speakers are not working, but the headphones work fine, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
The first step I recommend is to follow this document on No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 7). This should help to restore the sound to your speakers.
You can also enable the speakers on your computer as the default playback device. This can be done by following the steps below:
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Click on Hardware and Sound (sorting the control panel icons by "category"), and then click on Sound
    4. Under Playback, you should see one or two speaker icons. One of them should already have a green checkmark next to it (which will be your notebook's headset device). If the second Speakers icon is not visible, right-click in the list of devices and select Show Disabled Devices
    5. A second, disabled icon of "speakers" should appear. Right-click this icon and click Enable
    6. Test your speakers
If the issue continues, I recommend returning your notebook to a previous restore point before the speakers stopped working. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7).
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • All Speakers Suddenly Not Working!

Everything was fine until yesterday and I didn't do anything to the phone that might have caused this. I suddenly noticed that the speakers do not work, but through the headphones music will play. I can talk to people on the phone too, just not hear the phone ringing. The strangest part is, if I record something with the mic, it will play back! So the speakers work then.
I read online that this might be due to the iPhone still thinking the headphones are plugged in - I had had the headphones plugged in yesterday so I thought that was the problem, I tried plugging them in and out several times as people suggested with no results, I tried soft resetting twice, nothing... I then tried charging it as a last resort and realized if I mess around with the way the iPhone is plugged in (the angle), the sound will work, or at least cut in and out & fade in and out. Sometimes if I pull the USB in and out enough times, the sound will work when not plugged in... but of course that is very temporary solution - until I plug it back in to the charger. I am sure that isn't good for the phone either.
Does anyone know what has gone wrong? Is it a hardware issue? I don't have a warranty anymore. If I hard reset will it be fixed? And, if I hard reset, will I lose game data from apps, like Angry Birds and Inotia 2? I really don't want to lose that game info and I last backed up my iPhone quite some time ago; back when I downloaded Intoia 2.
I would greatly appreciate any help.

As far as I can see, it's random. Everything. Nothing makes any sense!
A the moment, the iPhone is playing music with the SIM card, but without anything plugged into it, but it's occasionally fading in and out.
Oh, and I doubt this is related, but about two months ago the iPhone failed to show that the battery was draining - it was stuck at 100%. This went on for a few days, it wouldn't even warn me at the 20% mark, it would just shut off. This happened for at least three full charges - I remember at one point it suddenly started working again at about the 70% mark, I'm not sure if it was alright after that or if it went glitchy on the next charge... but in any case, the problem mysteriously never reappeared after those few days.

  • My speakers are not working but it still makes a sound when it boots up

my speakers are not working but it still makes a sound when it boots up.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article.
    2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and a red light is coming from it, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    3. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    4. Reset the NVRAM.
    5. Reset the SMC.
    6. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    7. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Output speakers do not work, have a red light coming out of my headph. jack

My headphone jack works but theres a red light coming out of my headphone jack when its unplugged and my internal speakers will not work...anybody have an idea? Tried system preferences and says no options for selected audio and cant get any sound for my built in output speakers and my volume display in my bar is faded....HELP!

    @Spencer
I know this thread was marked answered but thought I should chime in since my MBP (2.66Ghz Late '08, bought May '09) started to exhibit this behavior. I was getting "No Output" greyed out speaker images and the red light coming out from the headphone jack. It's been intermittent but finally wouldn't go away so I figured I'd contact Appe.
This afternoon I called Applecare and was advised to take it to the Apple store... no questions asked, no troubleshooting steps, just told me to take it to the store and even offered to make me an appt. I was able to get an appointment at the genius bar same day (literally 2 hours after I hung up the phone). My wife took a ride with me and we headed down there.
When I showed the technician she tested it and then went to the back room to double check something. When she came back she told me that it was hardware related and needed to be sent in for service. I am under warranty so it was no skin off my back but I will need to be without the machine for a few days.
I agree with Rod to take it in, esp. if you're still under warranty. I should also mention that this only started happening a few weeks ago but the red light part was rather sudden.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook Pro 17" - My built in speakers are not working.

    Macbook Pro 17"
My built in speakers are not working.
The speaker logo is not highlighted (grey not Black) and when in sound options  "output" pane only displays the digital out for 'optical' - ie, the internal speakers dont register (headphone socket works)
    Any ideas?

    1. If red light is visible in the headphone port, plug the headphone into and out of the port 5 or 6 times
to flip the microswitch inside the port. Hopefully that will make the mode revert back to analog from digital.
    2. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
         Choose the appropriate method.
Hope any one of these steps helps.

  • My laptop speakers are not working properly so wanted to visit service centers of hp in london

from yesterday night my laptop HP pavilion g6 speakers are not working properly. out of many only one speaker is working so i want to visit authorized service centers so that i can fix the issue.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56001-56500/sp56460.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if this has had any effect on the audio issue.

  • Sound Speakers are not working! Not allowed to control the volume! Why?

    Hello,
Digital Output is not working on my iMac PowerPC G5 with Tiger. Suddenly, sound disappear and I was not allowed to turn on the volume through the keyboard buttons; a "not allowed" icon confirms that.
First I thought It was because Perian, Quicktime plugins, libraries, etc as I have read searching on these forums but I have just installed Mac OS X from the default install disc after formatting but the problem is not solved!
Speakers do not work but headphones and airtunes do.
Did the iMac Sound Speakers die?
    Help me, please!

    Imac G5 OS10.5.3
I have the same problem but with a twist:
    In system preferences:
    Under sound:
    Output selected:
    Under name: Digital out
    Under type: Built in audio
Below that : settings for selected device
It says:The selected device has no output controls
It won't let me adjust the audio up or down, no sound.
I can hear the chime when the computer comes on, though.

  • My MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working, what happened?

My MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working, what happened? If I plug in earbuds or external speakers, there is sound. In sound preferences, internal speakers are not a choice. Why doesn't my internal speakers work?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone

    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window

No it shows "Volume" not "Headphones" when I try playing music via external speakers & trying to  adjust volume.
    I have noticed one thing.
When i tried pushing/rubbing (Gently Not too Hard) bottom right front side of my Iphone ( exactly right side to Home Button) my speaker started working again for some time.
when it stoped again i applied same method.
Is this some kind of loose connection ?????

  • The internal speakers are not working on my macbook pro

the internal speakers are not working on my macbook pro

Are they selected under System Preferences>Sound? Or do you see something such as "Digital Output" listed instead of "Internal Speakers"?
It may be that your digital out switch is 'stuck.' This usually happens after using headphones and you can usually see a red light coming from the audio out port. You can 'fix' this by plugging and unplugging a headphone jack repeatedly until the switch is reset.
