Speakers only play when headphones are plugged in.

My internal speakers only play when the headphones are plugged in. (System preferences-Sound tells me I'm using Internal Speakers, audio port for sound input).  When I remove the headphones, the red light in the jack goes on and the computer says I'm using Digital Out ("The selected device has no output controls.)
I have read many community responses, most saying that the switch inside the headphone jack hasn't engaged, that I should fiddle with it using a paperclip/bobbypin/toothpick or just plug-in and unplug headphones repeatedly.  I have repeatedly both of these to no avail.  When fiddling, I don't really know which bump inside there is the switch, I've played with them all.
No, it's not dirty, I've blowin air, vaccuumed, dusted. Same problem.
I do use my speakers often for work and pleasure, go between different external speakers and a projector.
It seems that the computer has things backwards- headphones unplugged is pluged and vice versa.
Any suggestions or clear guidance as to what I should be fiddling with when I stick a bobby pin in there?  No need to refer me to old posts, I've read them.
Thanks in advance,
TheKip

If your phone is still under warranty, Apple will service your phone for free.
Did you check the headphone port for any kind of debris or lint?
Did you already try another set of headphones? Are you suing the headphones that came with the phone?
Is the headphone jack plugged in fully into the headphone port?

I have lost sound on my iPad in apps unless I use headphones ,does anyone know how to get sound back without them .I have used the mute volume on the bar at bottom of screen and the slider volume control there only shows when headphones are plugged in !
I also tried resetting settings all to no avail ...I looked up some advice and watched utube video advice on how to fix without success..
The volume control button on side does not work ,I got the iPad last August and wonder if it is a fault that means I must return it for replacement from where it was purchased ?

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?

  • My Ipad Speakers keep playing when Headphones are in.

yesterday, I Plugged in my headphones for my Ipad, and the sound came through the headphones. Today, I plug them in and they come through the speakers. Even though the headphones are in. How can i fix this problem?

There is a mechanical switch in the iPad headphone jack, this is how the iPad knows headphones are plugged in,
Insert and remove the headphones several times.
Inspect the jack, any visible debris?
Try blowing the jack out with compressed air.

  • Have a new iphone 5S and music won't play when headphones are plugged in. Restored the phone and tried again without restoring my info.  Any ideas on apps that cause this?

I just purchased a new iphone 5s and music would not play on it with headphones plugged in.  They replaced the phone for me but it continued to do this.  So I restored the phone and tried to play music on youtube before I restored all my settings and apps....Any suggestions on common apps that may cause this?

We have tried 3 different brands of headphones, including the apple set and auxiliary audio cord.
Also, music works fine before I load all my apps, hence why I ask if anyone knows about any kind of certain apps causing this.

  • IPod nano 6th gen (brand new) doesn't recognize when headphones are plugged in

I have a brand new iPod nano (6th gen), and it doesn't detect when headphones are plugged in. I have read that the problem can ocurr because the headphones are not correctly inserted (which is not the case.. i'm absolutely sure about this) or that the headphone jack has dust inside (which is also not the case, since it is brand new).
    This is what happens:
When i play a song, and then press the sleep/wake button to turn off the display, the music stops. Or if i let the music play, it stops when the screen times out and turns off. These two things occur because the ipod "thinks" that there are no headphones inserted.
When i try to activate the FM radio, the radio won't start because it says that there is no radio signal (which occurs when no headphones are connected).
Needless to say, the microphone and volume controls of the iphone headset, don´t work at all (they even work on the ipod shuffle!).. and because of this, no voice recording for me!
It's a shame, because the FM radio is completely useless, and music playing only works by activating the "double click to play" option in the settings menu.. but it is somewhat cumbersome the process of "play music - turn off the screen - double click to resume playing" every time I select a song.
The headphone detection has only worked randomly when the ipod is connected to the computer, but i haven't been able to figure out under what conditions this occurs. I have read about this issue, and I only would like to know if this is a firmware bug of the 1.2 version. I tried unsuccesfully to downgrade the firmware to the 1.1 version (maybe because the ipod shipped with the 1.2 version).
I have also restored the device in itunes, with no luck.....
Thanks in advance for any useful answer!

    Thanks for your answer...
The headphones that i'm using, are the ones that were included with the iphone 4 (so, they are original).. however this shouldn't be a problem, as the ipod should work fine with whatever headphones i choose to use (sound quality will vary, of course).
The ipod does the same with the headphones that were included in the box, and with every pair of headphones i have used to test, so i'm certain that the ipod has an issue.
I hope that the picture is clear enough.. here you can see that the headphones are fully inserted, and the ipod is not recognizing them.

  • My ipod 5th gen won't change volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can change the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

My ipod 5th gen won't let me adjust volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can adjust the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

  • Is there any way to make iphone 6 ring through speakers when headphones are plugged in?

Plugging in a headset disables the speaker...nothing you can do to work around that.

  • Ipod Touch 4th gen has no sound except when headphones are plugged in

I have checked sound settings, reset the ipod, powered off, and synced it.  Still no sound except when the headphones are plugged in.  Any ideas?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar

  • Volume changes when headphone are plugged, but not when they are unplugged.

    Hi!
Recently I been having an issue with my Macbook Pro 13.
When I connect my headphones to the MBP, the volume changes (as it should be), but when I take them out it doesn't return to normal, it just stays where it was when the headphones were connected.
Now, if i mute my internal speakers and connect the headphones the volume changes, but when i take them off, the volume returns to mute. So the problem is when both (internal speakers and headphones) are set to different volumes.
Here's a video that shows what happens in sound control panel (it's in spanish, "Auriculares"= Headphones and "Altavoces Internos"= Internal Speakers)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdNttRFnxE8&
Does anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks for your answers!

  • IPod does not turn back on when headphones are plugged in.

    Hi all,
In my previous iPod, it would automatically pause a song when the headphones are removed and if the iPod is off, it would automatically turn the iPod on once I inserted the headphone jack.
My 4G iPod for some reason does not turn the iPod on automatically when I insert the headphone jack. Is this normal or is there some setting that I need to change to accomodate this?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ed

Yep, the problem seems to appear when the iPod has been left to sit for an hour or so. Unplugging the headphone jack will pause the song and after a while the display will cut off. Plugging the jack back in does not turn the iPod back on, however hitting the menu button will turn it on where it was last left.
I could have sworn my previous iPod didn't behave this way; it would come back on when the jack was plugged in.

  • X200: hiss when headphones are plugged to the Ultrabase

    Hi,
I don't have a hiss if I plug the headphones in the X200 audio out jack, but have one the the Ultrabase audio out plug. I found it's somehow linked to CPU activity: it only happens when the CPU is at full speed, i.e. if I choose a power scheme that has a dynamic usage of the CPU, I don't hear the hiss, until the CPU needs more power.
Does this happen to others? Is it how the Ultrabase is designed? I find it's a bit of an expensive piece of hardware. I was already surprised it does not come with a dedicated power adaptor, now, I'd like it as a dock, even for audio.. Hope someone can point to any driver download or whatever would help this..
    Kind regards,
    amo

    Hi amo and svott,
I'm having the same problem here on my X200 with Ultrabase under Windows 7 as well as under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. On Windows 7 I had to install the official audio drivers in order to get sound work via Ultrabase. When I use the Thinkpads Audio Out the problem is gone. However I didn't buy the Ultrabase to have cables attached to the Thinkpad directly.
I wonder if it is a problem that rare that it is being ignored? I found one more thread in a different forum that also has been closed by now. They also could link the hiss with the CPU load.

  • Why does my iphone 4 play music out of the speakers when headphones are plugged in all the way

Any suggestions? Just happened yesterday out of nowhere

Have you checked the settings in System Preferences>Sound?  Are you certain that the jack is fully inserted?  If available I would try another set of earphones.
    Ciao.

This device only has one plug on the left side, so its not a case where the user plugged into the wrong slot.
We had this challenge eariler this year and after days of playing with it, I beat it into submission but I am
not willing to waste that kind of time again.
In control panel, hardware and sounds, sounds, playback devices there 3 devices listed:
Digital Audio (HDMI) - is disabled
Speakers/HP - is enabled and listed as "default device" (the weird thing is it lists Front Panel Analog Jack
AND Left Panel 3.5 mm Jack but this machine only has one jack?!)
    Communications Headphones - is disabled
I have tried every combination including deleting and disabling them all and I can't get it to play just through
the headphones.  It does not appear to be specific to the app, any browser, any music, any movie, they all play
in both no matter what I try...
    Please... HELP!

    Hi @molivero ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your and your HP Pavilion TouchSmart 15-b150us Sleekbook and headphones not working correctly.
Be sure that the device cable has a 4-conductor, a connector that supports both audio-out (headphone) and audio-in (microphone). Here is a document on connecting headphones.
What is the Manufacturer of the Headphones?
Communications Headphones - is disabled, have you tried to enable this?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

  • HP Notebook speakers play while headphones are plugged in, at random intervals

On my HP Pavilion g6-1b39wm Notebook PC running Windows 7 64-bit, I'm having an issue with my headphone jack; when I have my headphones plugged in, sound will switch back the speakers randomly, and then come back to the headphones after a couple seconds. As best as I can remember, I haven't made any changes to the computer that would cause this, and the problem still occurs regardless of what headphones I'm using.

same problem. i've scoured the web (or rather, browsed) and found that this isn't an uncommon problem with the newest IDT Codec Drivers. HP 3105m here. It's driving me crazy. I'm figuring that rolling back the drivers might do the trick, but can't figure out which version would work for my laptop. I'd suggest ditto yours
