Speakers only work when the headphones are plugged in

I have an HP Pavilion dv6-6163cl.  I purchased it about 1 year ago.  I use windows 7 and have not altered anything.  My internal speakers stopped working about a month ago.  I uninstalled the IDT audio driver and reinstalled it with the updated driver.  I ran troubleshoot and it said they are working properly.
I noticed that if I plug in headphones or external speakers into the headphone jack, then the internal speakers do work and turn on.  This is backwards.  The internal speakers should work when nothing is plugged into the headphone jacks.  There is no setting in sound settings or driver settings to fix this.
I never used headphones or plugged anything in to the headphone jacks, so I'm not sure what changed.  How do I fix this?

Hello cgoldberg11,
Take a look at this link, which has troubleshooting steps that should help you resolve this issue.  Please let me know if this helps.
Good luck!

Try to put your headphones several times in and out from your connection, might be the switch is stuck. Normally it should work again while trying to plug the headphones in and out!

  • My 3gs has stopped playing through the speakers and when the headphones are plugged in only plays through one ear? it still ring when called and everything else seems fine, whats the problem? it seems like the phone thinks the earphones are always in?

my 3gs has stopped playing music through the speakers, they play with headphones but only through one ear. It seems the phone thinks the headphones are in all the time. The ringer still works when called and i have cleaned the headphone socket the best i can without damaging the phone! Any ideas?

I had the same issue, 4s running ios8, but the plugging and unplugging the headphones did not work, BUT, when I tried plugging and unplugging from the DOCK, it started to work again. There must have been a short in the power plug, not the headphones. I also blew out the bottom power plug with computer safe airjet. Hope this one helps anyone else having the issue.

  • FYI: Push only works when the apps are open (in the background)

    Hi fellows,
I have made a rather annoying discovery. Emails are being pushed, provided the app runs in the background. In Mobile Me times this was not necessary.
I think you should know that before wasting your time.
    Cheers,
    Phillip

Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...

  • MBPro 17 Intel Core 2 Duo Audio only works with the headphones?

MBPro 17 Intel Core 2 Duo Audio only works with the headphones?
There is a red light constantly emitting from the headphone socket?
I can not listen to sound unless headphones are plugged in - when taken out I get a red light and the volume controls kets seem locked?
    Please help!
    Julian

    Hi Kitty.
Seems to be quite a popular problem. In another post, I posted the following.
"The red light is the data signal that is transmitted if you plug in an Optical Audio device such as surround sound speakers. I had the same problem for a short while with my 17' MBP. Sound was working fine from my built in speakers but I plugged in some earphones to listen to something that I did not want the rest of the office to hear and after pulling the hearphones out, the optical signal (red light) was being transmitted. The switch Cessna is referring to is the switch that is triggered inside the port that tells OSX that earphones/optical audio device is plugged in and to shut down power to the built in speakers. When the device is un-plugged from that port, the switch should get triggered again and power up the built in speakers and disable the optical light signal. Perhaps there is the slightest defect on the earphones you are plugging in that are preventing it from triggering the switch when the earphones are un-plugged.
Try a different sent of earphones to maybe trigger the switch if you are uncomfortable with the paper clip solution."
That seemed to solve the problem for that user.

  • IPod 5 sound only works when head phones are pluged in

Sound only works when ear phones are pluged in

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so. There is a little switch in the headphone jack that disconnects the speaker when the headphone jack is inserted.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.

  • My phone thinks the headphones are plugged in and I can't get any sounds.  How to fix?

My iphone 5 thinks that the headphones are plugged in and they are not.  I used them earlier today but they are no longer plugged in to the phone. I can't get any sound (text alerts, ringing, etc) on the phone outside headphones.  Any ideas on how to fix?

I have resolved my own problem thanks to reviewing other discussions. The solution that worked for me and that was suggested by an Apple store associate some time ago was to plug and unplug my headphone jack into the iPad four times. On the fourth time leave the headphone jack connected and rotate the plug clockwise, then remove and try your sound. When you use the external volume control the HEADPHONE label should be gone. It appears I have to do this now every time after I've used my headphone jack.

  • Itouch does not recognize the headphones are plugged in

Itouch (3rd gen) doesn't recognize that the headphones are plugged in and continues to play through the external speaker. I can also hear music through the headphones, they have been tested on my laptop and they work fine. Any idea what the problem might be?

Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults.
If you still have the problem then yuo likely have a hardware problem, the headphone jack does go bad sometimes.

  • My IPod Touch Stucks when the headphones are connected

    Hi,
My Ipod Touch 2G (2.2) stucks after few minutes when the headphones are connected (genuines APPLE or genuines for Iphone + Mic).
When I listen the music, after few minutes the song stops and the apple appears on the screen.
Do you have an idea of what's wrong ?
    Best regards

I think I fix the problem.
It wasn't besause of the headphones but the two small magnets there was on the cover of the leather case.
I removed them and the Ipod seems to work fine now ... I test again ...
    Any other victims ?????

  • My I phone thinks the headphones are plugged in and they are not.

help my I phnes think the headphones are plugged in and they are not

Try inserting and re-inserting your headphones 7 or 8 times. Also try cleaning out the headphone jack in case of debris that might be interfering with the connection/disconnection.

  • Why does Do Not Disturb only work when the iPhone is locked?

I've been wanting for awhile now a way to easily turn off all notification alerts and incoming calls while keeping cellular data and wi-fi on so I can use my phone in peace without gimping my wireless connections, and even though iOS 6 as a whole seems awesome to me, I'm disappointed Do Not Disturb only works when the iPhone is locked.

Was just wondering if other people felt the same way I do and start a discussion about it so maybe that with more people talking about it, Apple would pay attention to it more. People complaining about how calls and alerts were lighting up their screen at night seems to be some inspiration to why Apple added Do Not Disturb in the first place. Didn't know I was doing anything in violation of the Terms of Use so sorry about that.
