Speakers pop at restart or when awaking from sleep
My external speakers pop everytime I boot my iMac up and also everytime it awakes from sleep. It's a loud, dangerous pop (for the speakers). What is causing this and how can it be fixed?
This is a common audio problem between not 100% compatible frequencies, and different power sources. I remember my old LP player would pop if a little dust was on the needle when it landed on the a LP. Otherwise it was fine. The iMacs capable of running 10.7 have digital external speaker port which can have standard Sony minijack audio or miniToslink connected. If the frequency is not set right on the Audio Midi setup, or the recorded audio file, it can cause static too. A bit of corrosion on the minijack can cause audio static when connected too. If connected to analog audio it can also be caused by EMF fields from improperly shielded speakers. The best way to fix it identify all audio devices hooked up, and to what ports, someone might be able to identify the source of the problem. USB audio devices without their own power can have problem with sleep, since USB goes into a low power mode.

Play sound when awaking from sleep?
Hello! I'd like to make my Mac play a sound (.aif file) each time it awakes from sleep... any way to do this? How about playing a sound when starting up?
Thanks!
John Berry
iMac g5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)Hi, John.
1. SleepWatcher isn't a tool for Terminal newbies, but it's the only utility of its kind of which I am aware. My book focuses on troubleshooting — valuable on its own — but not programming: implementing tasks with utilities like SleepWatcher is clearly in the programming category and involves writing shell scripts or AppleScripts.
I don't do programming tutorials on the Discussions since they can become very time consuming and if you make errors, then we get into a long thread trying to resolve them, which can be very difficult using a vehicle like the Discussions. I try to focus my limited time here on helping people troubleshoot their Macs. For questions like your post, I try to point them in the right direction or give them steps that can be accomplished without programming. I'm sure you can appreciate that.
2. You wrote: "Also, I can add my file to the Login Items pane but it doesn't automatically play -- QT starts up, loads the file, but it doesn't play automatically..."I see you sorted that out. I suspect you did so by changing the default application for the sound file in question to QuickTime and have QuickTime preferences set to play movies automatically when opened.
With QuickTime Pro you can save any sound file as a .sfil file and use PlaySnd to play it via Method B in my prior post.
3. You wrote: "I've been a Mac user since 1984... it was easy then, your file just went in the Startup Items folder (that doesn't seen to have the same function anymore...)."It still does.
Whether something is placed in /Library/StartupItems or added to your account's Login Items depends on if it is a System-wide function that should be started for all users before any users log in (e.g. enable the process used by anti-virus solution), or execute when a specific user logs in, respectively.
The SleepWatcher case is different: you need to know how to program the specific action you want the Mac to perform when sleep is invoked using a shell script.
There are plenty of resources available to learn the Terminal and Shell Scripting.
- I recommend some books and other online resources in my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ.
- Once you've made some headway in learning Terminal, one can find a plethora of resources concerning shell scripting with this Google search.
- There are a variety of Developer-related Apple Discussions for asking coding questions concerning UNIX/Terminal, AppleScript, etc.
- You could always e-mail SleepWatcher's author (his e-mail address is at the bottom of his Web page) for advice.
Why not take up the challenge of learning Terminal and a bit about shell scripting? It can be fun as well as a valuable skill. We only grow by challenge!
One of my mottos is: "Give a man a fish, feed him for today. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime."
Good luck!

Must restart when awakes from sleep
brand new 2.8 quad CORE. 10 GB RAM
always when i awaken it a grey curtain comes down and says i must restart the computer. This happens all the time awakening.
any clues?
leopard 10.5.2
phsop firefox mail graphic converter launched
will 10.5.3 fix this?
thanksTest your RAM.
Try without the Apple RAM.
Make sure it is installed in the proper slots and configuration.
Try with only half of 3rd party memory.
What you see is a kernel panic. There are a number of FAQs to help walk through causes.
Test your circuit and what else is on the circuit, the inrush on wake from sleep could overload a small UPS or if you have too much equipment on same circuit.
There was an EFI firmware update 1.3 to address a wake from sleep issue that would usually result in a restart.
If you used Migration Assistant to import applications from a G5 or earlier, that can result in problems as well.
Run Apple Hardware Test.
Try with installing Leopard on another drive and see how it goes with just Apple OS and updates.
Remove anything hardware to bring it to stock. Even a faulty USB device or cable can cause k/p. -
Swoosh noise when awakes from sleep
When I open my MBP display from sleep, I hear an odd (to me at least) noise like a swoosh...or even like a sweeping noise. First I hear the noise (the one that sounds like gears are moving) but then I hear a swoosh noise. Sometimes two swoosh noises. Its just an odd noise, and I don't hear it all the time. I'm just wondering if any experts out there might have a diagnosis. Should I bring it in for check up? Or is this the normal noise?
Thanks for listening to my rant.More than likely you are hearing the fans powering up...

Kernel Panic when awaking from Sleep mode - since Security Update 2007-04
Since installing security update 2007-04, whenever I put the ibook into sleep mode, either using the menu or closing lid, when I reopen, I get the Kernal Panic black screen asking for a restart. I then reboot and everythings ok.
Any ideas?

Disconnect everything, then
1) Boot up from OSX DVD or CD
2) Repair disk and repair permissions using disk utility
3) If now possible to boot from the internal download, run the "Combo" Update, and then install the SU.
4) if not possible then do an "archive and install" of the OS while booted from the OSX DVD/CD before checking the drive again and updating
5) If not possible to boot from CD/DVD do a PRAM and/or PMU reset.
( … if the person concerned has an up to date backup on a bootable drive, then they should simply check the internal drive properly with DU and then clone the backup back to the internal, check the internal drive again, and then install the SU update.) -
Loud Popping Noise when wake from sleep
On my new iMac CD 20" there is a load popping noise that comes from the speakers when I wake it up from sleep. Also, the hard-drive or the super-drive clicks a few when waken from sleep. Yesterday there was a static noise coming from the speakers while I was using the machine on the web, it was load enough to be annoying, I restarted it and the sound went any. I am wondering if any others have noticed this problem and should I take it back for a new one.
My wife has even said that the sounds don't seem right.
Any feedback would be great!
Thanks.
20" Intel iMac and 12 P-book- 867 MHz Mac OS X (10.4.4)I conducted some tests on my iMac, and the problem, as it were, is related to having external speakers connected to my iMac. When I unplug my external speakers (JBL Encounter), I do not hear the pop upon waking my iMac from sleep. When I plug the speakers in again, the pop returns. I do not hear the pop when I mute the speakers before putting the iMac to sleep, either.
To rule out other devices, I unplugged all external devices and then reconnected them one at a time. Only the speakers triggered the pop.
I don't think this is a defect necessarily, even though I never heard the popping sound when waking my iMac G5 from sleep (with the same set of speakers). I think it may, as I suggest above, have something to do with the change in processors.
I may call Apple just the same to see what its tech. support people have to say on the matter.
Do those others of you experiencing the popping sound also have external speakers? -
HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

IMac is lock when awake from stop
Hi,
after 10.4.7 sometimes not all times, iMac when awake from stop, is like lock, I see the cursor move but all is lock... and then after 15/20" the fan start and I must press the back on/off button, to restart.
Can anyine help me?
ThanksAlso check your security settings: there is an item that says "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver." If it is checked, try unchecking it.
We used to have problems in 10.3 with sleeping iMacs and USB devices. The computer would "lose" the devices while sleeping so we had to unplug them and plug them back in when waking from sleep. Since you're using a Bluetooth device it may be getting "lost" but the physical rebooting option isn't available.

MBP intermittently restarts when waking from sleep
I had this problem repeatedly which seemed to stop after I did a full battery of repair utilities with TTP6... When opening the lid after the MBP was asleep (various times, could be a matter of minutes or hours) it would restart, blue screen appears, sometimes even brings up the password screen (I do NOT have the sys prefs set to ask for a password either on restart or on resume from sleep!). It does not make the tone that occurs on restart or starting up, just see the screens change, then the desktop appears, see all the extensions loading on the top bar, dock appears, etc just like a start up or restart would occur but the process is faster overall. Battery level is fine, just randomly restarting. It happened again this evening. I have had some other peculiar issues with the MBP just restarting itself but on coming out of sleep seems by far and away the most common. I am befuddled as to what the problem might be. I'll also note, no peripherals attached. No 3rd party hardware upgrads, all original Apple stuff from initial purchase. Any suggestions on a troubleshooting process and feedback on potential severity of the issue would be greatly appreciated.
Well, it's been awhile since I reinstalled the system to purge it of any goofy files. So, I tried using my Snow Leopard install DVD which will not work!??!? I then tried using my Leopard DVD which will not allow me to reinstall the system either?!?? So, now I'm backing up to my G-Tech mini and I'm going to boot from that drive and wipe out the MBP internal drive, reinstall the OS and use setup assistant to import data from the backup drive. Something is clearly not right that goes above and beyond the weird sleep -> restart issue. Still interested in feedback if this clearly appears to be the result of something that I just don't understand?

Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep
Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?
Thanks,
MatthewI have a similar problem - hard restart when closing the lid to put it to sleep. It looks like there is a bluetooth issue(?), but I'm not sure what to do with it. We don't have any blue tooth devices in our house. From the console log:

When my brand new MacBookPro awakes from sleep it has lost its internet connection. It goes to Network Diagnostics and I need to step through all the pages to get to the end where it says connection is o.k. Is this a bug in Lion or could it be a corrupt file migrated over from my old MacBook Pro which would frequently lose its Airport connection and couldn't be reconnected until it cooled down. (This one always shows full bars on the Airport indicator).
That's definitely just paranoia. First, because in sleep mode, there's no internet connection. The computer might as well be turned off as far as the network is concerned, and there's no activity in the computer other than a bare trickle of electricity to maintain the RAM. The processor is doing nothing.
Second, Macs are quite difficult to hack, and if you're on a wireless network, the wireless router protects you from incoming attacks from the outside world.
Of course, you should be able to leave Safari open with no open windows and not affect your ability to get online when it wakes up. If you can reproduce that reliably, and if I can as well (haven't had a chance to try it yet), then it should be reported to Apple. -
AIR event when computer awakes from sleep mode?
Hi,
I have an AIR app that displays a new set of photos every 12 hours. Some users are complaining that the photos are not refreshed after 12 hours if the computer had been in sleep mode over night.
At first I thought possibly the Timer was stopping when in sleep mode so I instead modified the Timer to execute every minute and just check to see if the last refresh was at least then 12 hours ago. This still did not solve the issue.
Is there an event dispatched I can listen for to detch when the computer awakes from sleep mode? Or if any one has any other suggestions.
Thanks,

Open browsers quit when computer awakes from sleep mode
This happens onlyon my Powerbook G4 15" 1.33GHZ, and not on my iBook 700MHz. When the PB awakes from sleep mode, any open browser quits. Following is, as an example, the debug output in Terminal of Firefox quitting (I have already sent those reports both to Apple and to the authors of the browser).

Hello! When my IMac awakens from sleep mode, my log in screen is frozen (I can't type anything) and there is no cursor.
I can turn the computer off and on again and then I have an active log in screen, but if I walk away from the computer and it goes into sleep mode and i have the same problem trying to bring it back from sleep mode.
Thoughts?Hey Kristogirl,
I understand that when waking from sleep mode, your iMac freezes. Try executing these two troubleshooting steps:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
If neither of those help the issue, I would follow the steps in the next article, specifically the "If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X" section:
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199
