Speakers suddenly stopped working

my sounds suddenly stopped working. After talking to a couple of knowledgeable people, I uninstalled the Realteck audio driver, and then I had decent sound coming through the speakers ! This is for an HP desktop, a6750y
So then I tried to re-install the driver. Although the driver had the same file name, it was newer than the one previously on the system, so I re-installed it, and once again, no sound. So I uninstalled this version, but now I have no sound !!!!
I do get sound through the headphones.
here's what I installed, but it's not working.

William, welcome to the forum.
Have you checked in "Control Panel / Sound" to assure that your sound device is selected as the default?  I have had this happen to me many times over the years; especially, if I have made changes of any kind to my computer.

  • Satellite L650 - Speakers suddenly stop working

Suddenly my laptop speakers stop working. Volume was 60 % not too loud.
All drivers are ok and updated and laptop purchased 1 month ago new

    Hi buddy,
Can you notice the same behaviour if you connect external speakers or headphones? Maybe its just a wrong sound setting and with external devices you can test this.
Have also a look on Windows sound settings. You can change the balance between right and left speaker.
If its really a hardware malfunction you can contact an authorized service provider. The guys will repair your notebook under warranty (free).

  • External speakers suddenly stop working

My 13" aluminum MacBook's internal speakers are working fine.  External speakers and headphones were also working fine until yesterday.  Now, external speakers do not work with my MacBook at all, and with headphones I get a very muddled, echoy sound.  This happened overnight - my laptop was just sitting, not plugged in, on my desk.  I've tried restarting and resetting the NVRAM - no help.
I have a 13" Aluminum Unibody MacBook running OSX 10.7.5.
    Please help!

    >I had a quick look this morning and sure enough, a YouTube clip was playing, but no sound.
This happened to me too using an Tecra A11 unit.
The Youtube clip had no sound but if I plugged and re-plugged the headphone jack, the sound appeared again.
I thought this was a problem with headphone jack but I wanted to check if this issue could be solved by driver reinstallation.
Firstly I uninstalled the Realtek sound driver from the system. Then I entered the device manager and deleted the High definition Audio Controller from the System Devices area.
In Audio , video and games controller I deleted the Intel display audio entry.
    Finally I rebooted the system.
After new reboot the Windows recognized the deleted devices. I checked the playback tab in control panel -> sound and found new device Headphones which was not visible before.
Then I started Youtube and checked the sound. It was available. Then I installed the newest version of Realtek HD audio driver and rebooted the unit.
    The sound was still there
So hopefully it was just and driver issue

  • Bose speakers suddenly stop working

It's been working since I connect the speaker almost for a year I accidentally pull it out when I was taking out my usb cable when I plug it in the speakers are not working anymore.

Perhaps you accidentally plugged it back into the Audio Input instead of the Output Port?

  • Help - speakers suddenly stopped working

    Hi,
I was playing a CD in iTunes today, at first I was listening with the internal speakers, then plugged in some external speakers (I did not stop the CD playing), and powered them on. When the CD came to the end I unplugged the external speakers. Since then I've not been getting any sound from my eMac's (800MHz w/ superdrive, OS 10.2.8) internal speakers - they've always worked well up until now. Sound is coming through fine on headphones and the external speakers.
I noticed that I had not switched off the power to the external speakers before I unplugged them, could this have caused some problem?
I've checked the sound preferences for 'Output' and it says 'Built-in Audio Controller' - there's no other option when headphones/external speakers are unplugged.
I've restarted the machine - just in case - but no joy.
Could this be a driver or firmware (or whatever it's called) problem? It seems strange that both left and right have gone at the same time, and that there's no noise/hiss coming from them, just silence.
Any help would be most welcome.
    Cheers,
    Tracy

Well, I still don't know what the problem was, but when I switched the eMac on today the internal speakers are working again.
If anyone does know a reason, I would be interested to know in case its something I need to fix now, rather than leaving it to fester.
    Cheers, Tracy

  • Speakers suddenly stop working. Icon greyed out?!

    Hi all.
I started my laptop this morning to find that the speakers don't appear to be working. For no reason whatsoever. They were working last night. And now they're not.
I press the volume up, down and mute buttons and it does nothing. The 'overlay' comes onto the screen showing like it has max volume, but with a circle/cross underneath (imagine a no smoking sign).
In the top menu bar, the sound icon is there but it's greyed out so I can't do anything.
    Anybody help me please?!?

the same thing happened to me. I closed my laptop to take it upstairs to work some more and when I opened back up the sound icon was greyed out. I tried plugging in speakers and a headset and they work fine. I think that it is probably the logic board but I read here : http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2244270 that it could just be the internal switch. I have a late 2008 model and the post seemed to mention models of that date. Let me know if you figure this out.

  • Outputs Suddenly Stopped Working.

I have a 5th gen Ipod that I've taken very good care of. Until yesterday I've had no problems with it at all. I was using the Ipod in my car w/ my Itrip and the Audio suddenly stopped working. I assumed it was the Itrip not working correctly, so I plugged it into a set of speakers (via the bottom output) but that wasn't working either. Then I plugged headphones in and there is no audio feeding through the headphone output either. I can see on the screen that the songs are playing on the ipod, but apparently the outputs are not functioning correctly. I tried all of the "Rs" recommended in troubleshooting but those did not help. Any suggestions?

i have the exact same problem. Although i am able to here the clicks throught the headphones which makes me wonder that this is something with software. although i have restored and reinstalled and all that, nothing.
    Anyone have a solution?

  • Sound suddenly stopped working.

Hi, my sound on my HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC just suddenly stopped working the other day. Everything says that it is functioning, and my drivers are up to date, but I cannot seem to get the sound to work out of my speakers or out of headphones.
    Product Number: A9P60UA#ABA
Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
If you could help, that would be wonderful! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56900.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the link below.
    Chipset Driver - Windows 7.
When this has completed, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then hold down the Power and Beats buttons for 10 seconds.  When done, reconnect the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • Internal speakers have stopped working (Lenovo W500 with Win 7 Pro)

    Hi
    I have a Lenovo W500 4062-5YG... O/S: Win 7 Pro
My sound device is a Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD.
The problem is, that the internal speakers have stopped working all of a sudden... I think it is a hardware problem since when I hookup external speakers or headphones they produce sound... but I am no expert!
I have done the following to try and fix it:
    Disable, then enable audio drivers
    Uinstall, then install audio drivers
Setting the internal speakers as the default speaker source
Restoring the system to an earlier day (where I knew that the speakers had functioned)
None of these actions have worked.
I actually thought I could perform a hardware test on the speakers in the "Lenovo Solution Center"... but it doesn't seem like it:-(
    So...
How can I know for sure whether it is a hardware or software problem?
And more importantly - How can I get my internal speakers to work?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Cheers
    Philip

    Hello Philip,
As mentioned in your post, you have performed all the major troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. I suggest you to update your BIOS also in order to resolve your issue. You can download and update the BIOS update utility from the below mentioned web link.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_SG/downloads/default.page?
Kindly click on Quick path and put your 7 Digit TYPE-Model number(40625YG) in the box and then click on the Find My Product. Please click on BIOS and then download the BIOS update utility according to your Operating System. It might resolve your issue. If it will also not work then it seem to be an issue with hardware. Kindly get in touch with the support centre they will assist you and try to resolve the issue.
    Regards,
    Harish

  • Viber suddenly stopped working on blackberry 9220

Hi, my viber suddenly stopped working. Is it because I need to update? If so, how do I update? Can you give ne a step-by-step guide! Thanks!

This Apple article might be able to help ya out -> iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers
    Symptoms
When someone calls, I can't hear them through the receiver or speaker phone, and I can't hear music through the speaker. I also can't be heard by someone who is calling me.
    (from the article linked above)
Do you see a headphones icon when you adjust the volume on your iPhone, without headphones connected?
If you do, you might have to try and get the gunk out of the headphone jack, if not try a reset, restore, or service.

  • My sound suddenly stopped working, how do i fix this?

my sound suddenly stopped working after i unplugged my headphones, how do i fix this?

    Common problem.
Check the headphone port - if you can see a red light, the port is still live, cutting off the internal speakers.
The cause is a little leaf switch that is pushed over by the jack when you insert it. Sometimes these stick.
Try inserting and removing a jack a few (dozen) times.
If that doesn't free it you may attempt to tease it with a slim non-conducting tool (like a toothpick). Ensure the Mac is not only shut down, but unplugged if you try this.
And be careful; the leaf is fragile and it's an expensive bit to get to and replace, in fact on some models it's directly on the logic board.

  • Pavillion Laptop with Windows 7 - Speakers have stopped working but headphones do!

    Hello
I have a Pavilion dv6 Notebook, with an AMD A8-3500M APU and Radeon HD Graphics card.  It is a Windows 7 64 bit system and was purchased in october of 2011
The speakers on my laptop have suddenly stopped working, but external speakers continue to function.  I have tried the windows troubleshooter, resetting defaults on playback devices, and updating drivers both through the device manager and through HP Recovery manager.  I have tried uninstalling and re-installing drivers, and a hard reset ofthe computer (unplugging all devices and power sources, waiting and restarting).  I have tried System Restore to restore the system to a date before the problem.  None of these have helped.  Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi there @Rob5
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you are having problems with the notebook speakers., and I am happy to help with this. From all the trouble shooting you have described it sounds like it may be that the speakers themselves may have gone bad, or the connection is loose.
Before we look at the possible physical problem, take a look through this page first, just in case there is something you have not yet tried.
No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 7)
If you are still getting now sound, then take a look through page 62 of 137 in this guide:
HP Pavilion dv6 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide
That page shows how to replace the speaker assembly and the relevant part number, but before going that route, I would suggest just disconnecting and reconnecting the speakers, in case it is just a bad connection. Over time a connector can work itself loose. Just doing that may fix the problem. If not then you can call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • Sound suddenly stops working (Youtube)

    Hi!
Since I installed a Flash Player update 1-2 months ago, the sound in almost half of the videos I watch on Youtube suddenly stops working (usually only in videos that are longer than 10 minutes). First there's a short crackling sound (not all the time, though) and then the sound simply stops, even though the video is still playing. Reloading the page or jumping ahead a few minutes, then going back to the original spot usually only fixes it for less than 5 minutes and if I do that 2 or 3 times, the sound won't even be there for more than a few seconds. Restarting Firefox doesn't help, either. If I want to try again with the same video a few days later, the problem occurs again.
I'm using headphones (Sennheiser HD 201) that are plugged into speakers (Logitech X-140) but I'm 100% sure that those aren't the culprits since I can listen to mp3s, watch videos (avi, mp4, doesn't matter) or play games just fine and the problem has never ever occured while doing that. So it definately has something to do with the update 1-2 months ago and the latest update (maybe a week ago) didn't fix it. I also already saw a few comments on videos I'm experiencing the problem with about the sound suddenly stopping.
    OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)
Browser: Firefox (36.0.4) - also tried loading the video in IE11 but all the buttons (quaility settings,...) were missing, so I closed it again.
    Flash Player: 17.0.0.134
Any idea how I can fix the problem and if there's already a fix in the works?

Most of the videos on YouTube these days are HTML5.  If you right-click on the problem video, are you getting About Flash Player, or About HTML5?
If it *is* Flash, do you have the same problem if you disable Hardware Acceleration?  See the section on it in the troubleshooting guide below:

  • Audio suddenly stops working

Product Name: HP 2000 Notebook PC
    Product Number: E0K74UA#ABA
    Operating System: Windows 8 64-Bit
Over the past few days, I've been having trouble with the audio on my computer. When I start it up, the audio is working fine. However, after some time has passed, (it varies each time) the audio suddenly stops working. I can mute the audio, but it takes about 5 presses of the button to do so. The audio will not play at all; not for webpages, Windows Media Player, or even the system sounds.
Troubleshooter cannot detect any problems with the audio and whenever I try to change the properties of the speakers, it claims "This device is being used by another application", even when I do not have any applications open. All drivers are up to date, and other than the audio not playing, the computer runs fine. By restarting the computer, the problem fixes itself, but eventually the sound disappears again.
If at all possible, I would prefer a solution that will not delete any files or programs that I have downloaded. I'm also very inept with computers, so I may need a step-by-step walkthrough to follow.

    Good Morning
    Greetings from Babar Ali
I have hp 2000 laptop & i m facing alot of problems but recently it have audio problem, and its giving errer that(  Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file ) some time its working some times not so i will have to restart.
