Spec'ing a system -- where to direct the $$ ??

Greetings -
I'm spec'ing a new system for, among other things, running Lightroom, and was wondering, all other things being equal (which they never are),
where the typical bottlenecks will lay.  Or lie.
Typically, I'll be cataloging/editing RAW images that are 10-15MB in size.  And this is a hobby, not a business.
My goal is to get a computer that's fast enough, without spending more than I have to.
And let's assume that, for now, I'm only going to have one monitor, but an upgrade
path for two monitors would be nice (and what does that entail, anyway -- a second graphics card? --
simultaneous use of onboard graphics and graphics card?).
First question -- any reason I might need more than 4GB of RAM and, if so, under what circumstances?
Second question -- do I need a video card, or are onboard graphics likely sufficient? -- And if I do need a graphics card,
what's 'good enough'?(My research suggests that killer video cards are really for gaming and/or 3D rendering.)
Third question -- do I need anything faster than a recent generation dual-core (be it AMD or Intel) processor?
Fourth questions -- any suggestions/caveats as far as hard drive optimization?
(i.e. - how hardcore does it get? -- OS on one drive, app on a second, images on a third, scratch file on a fourth ... ?)
Seasoned wisdom welcome.
Thanks kindly.

I have an dual-core AMD Athlon X2 2.6GHz on a previous generation motherboard with 8 GB RAM (no difference to 4GB for me) and a single 250GB hard drive. Built-in graphics. I built it myself with some 450$ two years ago.
Everything work just fine with a single catalog with some 17K images.
My goal is to get a computer that's fast enough, without spending more than I have to.
Then just by a low-to-medium-end modern system. Any modern computer is faster than my system and is good enough for LR.
And let's assume that, for now, I'm only going to have one monitor, but an upgrade
path for two monitors would be nice (and what does that entail, anyway -- a second graphics card? --
simultaneous use of onboard graphics and graphics card?).
My advice is to use the built-in for now and add a descrete card later when you ger the monitor. Most modern motherboard with built-in graphics has a DVI and/or VGA port.
First question -- any reason I might need more than 4GB of RAM and, if so, under what circumstances?
I had 4GB with Vista 64 for some time and never seen Lightroom reach that limit. Even on large exports and preview rebuilding. I added 4 more because it's dirt cheap and wanted to stay safe running with the page file off.
Second question -- do I need a video card, or are onboard graphics likely sufficient? -- And if I do need a graphics card,
what's 'good enough'?(My research suggests that killer video cards are really for gaming and/or 3D rendering.)
On-board graphics, as above. But in case you end up buying a decrete card (e.g. MB without on-board video), today the low-end Radeons - 4350, 4550 are best for a non-gaming machine. They are passive cooled - no noise from fans, running cool, usually have two digital ports, cost 30-50$ and have more than enough power for desktop grapchis.
Third question -- do I need anything faster than a recent generation dual-core (be it AMD or Intel) processor?
If your goal is "a computer that's fast enough, without spending more than I have to" - then, certainly, no.
Fourth questions -- any suggestions/caveats as far as hard drive optimization?
If we are talking about a cheap machine, then in a typical two hard-drive configuration:
1. OS, Apps, Catalog/previews
2. images.
Let me explain. If you computer is optimized and clean, i.e. no anti-virus fooling around scanning your Lightroom cache, or search indexer/prefetcher/defender messing with your hard-drive, then the first drive during normal operation is almost totally dedicated to Lightroom. The second, naturally, too, since it only has the image files.
If you want to go more upper-end with your disk subsystem, then:
1. OS, apps - there's definitely no reason for splitting these.
2. Catalog/previews only. - get the fastest drive here: a small fast SSD, such as OCZ Vertex or Intel X25-M.
3. Images. A big reasonably fast HDD.

You don't even need the family pack anymore!  Just use the same Apple ID to connect to the App Store on each computer and upgrade... pay for it once and you can use it multiple times.  According to the Lion page on www.apple.com, this is intended, and...
According to the App Store OS X Lion 10.7 License Agreement Section 2 Paragraph B:
    B.  License from Mac App Store.  If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) ("Usage Rules"), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:

This means that you can buy OS X Lion with your Apple ID, and any Mac you own (or have control over) that is legally defined by the license agreement can be connected by the same Apple ID and upgraded.

    Hi Daddyfred,
CS4 Photoshop has not been tested on Yosemite. But still you can try the Java 6 update using the below link.

    Hi,
You can UDF like in Message Mapping to get the file size.
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container.getTransformationParameters().get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","SourceFileSize");
    fileSize = conf.get(key);
You have to mention adapter specific attribute for file size in file adapter.
How to retrieve file size and XI message ID?

  • ORA-27054: NFS file system where the file is created or resides is not moun

    Linux Red Hat 4
    10.2.0.4
Had this issue since someone unplugged the san on Monday, and the servers were rebooted. Trying to do a duplpicate to Reporting Server from Production. The error returned, once the backupsets are being copied, is
ORA-27054: NFS file system where the file is created or resides is not mounted with correct options
I have edited fstab in the way that the Doc 781349.1 suggests. I have unmounted the mount point and remounted. Themount is set up this way:
    /backup/PROD on /backup/PROD type nfs (rw,bg,hard,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,nfsvers=3,nointr,timeo=600,proto=tcp,addr=172.16.2.92)
I have checked fstab and it has write permissions for the oracle user with which I run the duplicate command.
I am able to browse, and create files on the /backup/PROD area.

It is my understanding that the NFS mouting options necessary to support Oracle vary based on the hardware/OS in use.
I have the following recored for a NetApp appliance
    hard,bg,rw,vers=3,proto=tcp,intr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,forcedirectio
and this for a Linux Client
    rw,bg,hard,nointr,tcp,vers=3,timeo=300,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,actimeo=0
I suggest your review your platform specific documentationa and any record you have from the origonal set up.
You might just want to open a SR where you provide the specific hardware info and see if support can help after making another search for documents of interest.

  • Where to find the download link for the Portal BP for Payer Direct?

Can anyone tell me where to find the download for the BP for Payer Direct???
I see information about it on help.sap.com.
Also, it is mentioned in detail in the docs for the BP for Supplier Collaboration.
But I cannot find anything for it on SDN or Service Marketplace.
    Thank you in advance

I finally found it in the Content Portfolio.
I was including the "" in my search...like "Payer Direct". This way was just returning every one of the BPs.
But if I search on Payer Direct without the quotes around the term, then I get the result.
In my result, it does not say License Required. I get the download icon, and it says "The license for this package is included in the mySAP ERP (P) or the mySAP SRM (P) or the SAP Financial Supply Chain Management (P) or NW User (for R/3 Users)license."
But when I click on the download link, it does not work. I get a syntax error.

I assume you don't have a backup on an external HD. You always should, because then you could easily fix your problem.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

We want to activate Windows Server 2008 R2 on the system where trial version is already activated,

    Hi,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with this issue.
If you mean that convert the Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation version to a full version, we can get following
details from this KB: Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 evaluation version
Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?
Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version
to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. Since there is no support for any type of upgrade you must do a install to new directory using non-evaluation media. If you change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references
in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the system and the media retains its evaluation status.
Meanwhile, please refer to the following similar thread and check if can help you.

You haven't formatted the SSD, so you can't install Mac OS X.
First, close the OS X installer and open Disk Utility. Then, choose the SSD at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab, choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as "Format", and press Erase. Finally, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
