Special boots with faulty shift key

My shift key has been faulty for a while after a minor accident which did not affect other parts of the computer (It was checked by a Mac technicial, this happended a long time ago), but since then I've had to boot my computer by holding down the escape key every time to prevent a safe boot, no problem, but cue to now, the past two days I've been having strange freezes on boot for 10-15 minutes mouse moves but cannot click, keyboard frozen. I would like to try: a. resetting the PRAM and b. running a hardware diagnostic from the CD, but I can manage to do neither presumably due to my faulty shift key problems.
Does anyone know how my shift key would interact with these other special startups? What key combinations should I try?
And
Is there a non-hold key on bootup way to do these tasks?
Thanks

Trust me if I thought it was the caplock key being stuck then I would not be posting this question in the first place.
The computer boots into safe mode and from what I understand, this happens when the shift key is pressed on boot up.
Thanks ARReflections for the clarification on your above statement. I miss read what you where trying to convey.
Agreed of coarse with eww assessment.
Don't rule out the problem shift key is the one you do not use regularly. Independent of cleaning under the key (DIY compressed air, removing the key cap for cleaning, etc) well could be narrowed down to the microswitch.
Depending on how far past warranty there is always the possibility it will still be honored as warranty repair, or fixed at the Genius Bar.

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up.  I only get a grey screen with the spinning wheel.  No blue page appears and the grey screen remains.  Tried starting with the Shift key but ineffective as well.

Can't get my MacBook Pro to start up.  Have shut it down several times and tried restarting but all I get is a grey screen with the spinning icon.  Apple Support online suggested starting with power button followed immediately with the shift key.  Same results.  Also tried power button with shift key, command, and V.  Black screen appeared instead with lots of data language but still no starting.  This final page was suppose to result in an internal system check and restart but nothing happened and the black screen remains.Where do I go from here?  Scheduled for the Genius Bar tomorrow but would like to resolve this beforehand.

You may be having a hardware problem that you cannot resolve on your own. Nevertheless...
...hold down the command and R keys whilst booting to try to get to your Recovery partition. If you can, use Disk Utility to try to Verify your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). If the verification fails, try to repair your hard drive. If everything appears to be OK, restart.
If you can't get into your Recovery partition, your problem is likely hardware related. If so, keep your appointment and see what the Apple techs have to say.

  • MBA with CITRIX - shift key only CAP the first charactor?

My MBA connects to work PC (windows xp) via CITRIX(Citrix Online plug-in for Mac -web) in Snow Leopard, it seems like shift key + any charactor, only cap the first hit, it caused lots of trouble for my typing habit, as even I am holding my shift key and then press any keys, it will only cap the first one. I had tested in Snow Leopard, there is not problems with holding shift key to get CAP characters, only happen in CITRIX session.
Does anyone have the same problems and anyone know how to fix it?

Have you tried the version of citrix listed in the Apple App store? It can open most of the data files the plugin will open, and it seems to have a little bit better performance.

  • When i press the i key with the shift key nothing happens. I can get a capital i only by pressing the cap lock key whats wrong.

When i press the i key with the shift key nothing happens. the only way I can get a capital i is by using the caps lock key what is going on. Also from time to time my mouse acts like someone is sitting on it. this stops when i press the command key. i am using the lateist wireless mouse and keypad.

does it only happen with the i key?
if it doesnt then try presing shift first then i (or any key) second instead of at the same time.
if it only happens with the i key then what i would do is take the keyboard and mouse to an apple store and ask them if they will hook it up on their computer to see if it is the keyboard or computer.

  • TS3742 I have a kernel panic that doesn't respond to booting up with the shift key depressed.any suggrestions

I have A kernAl panic thAt isn't responding to the shift key being depressed during boot. Any suggestions?

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems on a laptop, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • My iMac will not boot up - held shift key - spinning gear does not advance  -  will not advance to home page??

My Mac will not boot up- advance to desk top- spinning gear keeps on going - white screen with apple logo only???
Held shift key - right after pushing power button

That is typically indicative of either a hard drive corruption or a hardware failure. What happens if you just let the Mac sit forever? Does it boot to a folder icon?
How old is your iMac? You may be able to run Hardware Diagnostics by booting up holding down the "D" key as well.

  • Difference between opening PDF within IE with pressing SHIFT key and without SHIFT key

    Hi,
I want to know when we open a PDF file within Internet Explorer it is using ActiveX control AcroPDF.dll behind the scene.
Now If I open PDF within IE with keep pressing SHIFT key the behavior is different then without pressing SHIFT key?
Is AcroPDF.dll behaves differently in this situation?
    Thanks,
    Twinkle

I've saved two files on my desktop:
    f1040.pdf - downloaded from www.irs.gov - 187 KB
    afmod07.2.1g.pdf - downloaded from my intranet - 1,04MB
I've powered off my PC and restarted for each file. I've opened files with double-click on them. I've encountered the same problem, when double-clicked on files in task manager two Acrord32.exe appeared, the PC was doing anything for about 10 second, after that I've encountered no activity in task manager (numbers not vary) for other 10 seconds (like freeze) and after that other about 10 seconds of loading. So after about 30 seconds the file opens with stand-alone Acrobat Reader (11.0.10).
If I retry now (after the first slow startup "of the day") the file opens in 2-3 seconds.
    So:
    - first open of the day or rebooting PC: 30-45 seconds
    - second open of the file: 2-3 seconds
This is happening only with PDFs with forms.

  • Booting with the alt key shows non bootable volumes

When booting my MBP with the alt key pressed, non bootable volumes (partitions) are displayed. Has anybody else experienced the same thing?
I would like to know how to remove the non bootable partitions from the System Startup Manager.
    Tanks

I have a similar situation with my Quicksilver (2002) G4. Holding down the option key at startup reveals a volume, in my case, that has not been connected to the computer for months and is not connected now. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM does not remove it.

When i want to burn any CD or DVD with Nero, Roxio or anything else, i have this nice message :
DMA driver error. CRC error. Burn failled.
    Solved !
I change the IDE cable with one of 80 wires.
    This is MAGIC !!!
The 80-conductor cable was first defined with the original Ultra DMA modes 0, 1 and 2, covering transfer speeds up to 33.3 MB/s.
The cable is considered "optional" for those modes.
However, for any Ultra DMA modes above mode 2, the 80-conductor cable is mandatory.

  • CS4 can't input special characters (|\#) with alt+shift

    Very strange,
I can input all characters with alt+shift except for:
    * alt+shift+l normally outputs: |
    * alt+shift+/ normally outputs: \
    * alt+shift+£ normally outputs: #
I have an EN_US version, and I work with an azerty-keyboard
This was an issue with cs3 too
anybody has a clue why I can't input these characters?
    thanks

No idea, but maybe due to security reasons, because "&&" is a logical AND, and "||" is a logical OR, and "//" could start a comment, through input boxes these could actually alter the internal program and one maybe able to bypass security codes or do other imaginative things. In fact similar things have been widely used in PHP language by hackers, one of their methods is known as "xss" or cross site scripting through which a badly regulated/filtered/controlled user input can be exploited.

  • Selecting Multiple Files With Shift Key

Am I right in understanding that the only way to select multiple files with the Shift key in Finder is by using File view? Seems kinda silly.
    Thank you, Scott

I'm at my Snow Leopard machine right now, and I'm not sure that nothing was changed in Mavericks, but I never noticed that it was.
I have four view modes: Icon, List, Column and CoverFlow.
I almost always use Column view, but I am guessing that you are calling Icon view File view. In Icon view, Shift clicking seems to work the way Command clicking does in Column view (and probably the other views as well): it allows you to add randomly selected files to the selection. In Column view, Shift clicking works like it does for most things (like text selection); it selects every thing between the previous click and the Shift click.

  • Macbook pro only boot with R key

    I have a problem with a macbook pro .
I have snow leopard and after running onyx my computer only boot with the R key pressed , I have tried option-command-PR , reset SMC , repair permissions without success .
I have an external apple led cinema but with or without the error continues .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

  • I tried holding down the shift key when opening Safari, and I still get the Apple homepage instead of the one I previously selected in Safari Preferences.  I also set the two boxes above my selected homepage setting, with the same result.

I am also getting the "getadblock.com" every time I open Safari...it opens to that window and then downloads an adblock extension, which I do not want.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferencees then select the Extensions tab.
    Uninstall the getadblock extension.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If you launch Safari with the Shift key depressed and it doesn't open the General tab...
Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go  then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Booting holding the alt key

I try to boot my newly bought Mac Pro holding the alt key but I only get a blanc screen.
Holding shift or "c" or "d" is working, but it seems to freeze on holding the option-key.
I already tried to remove everything that is not "standard" (PCI eSata card, extra hdd).
Even did a clean reinstall of the OS but nothings helps.
Couldn't find much answers on the net.
    Anybody a idea or suggestion?

    What I did:
Booted from the original install dvd, started diskutility, checked al partitions (bootable and not).
    No problem found.
Still with the install dvd in the optical I removed all hdd's and tried to boot with the alt-key. white screen.
I disconnected the optical drive and put one hdd with 2 partitions back in place. white screen.
Still with only 1 hdd I disconnected everything except the keyboard.
    => 2 bootable partitions found . . . whoohoo.
Connected 1 device at a time back untill I got again a white screen without bootable partition.
The ethernetconnection seems to be the guilty one.
    RJ45 disconnected => correct startup with ALT-key
    RJ45 connected => white screen.
I tried it several times so I'm sure about this.
The MP is connected to a small gigabitswitch from d-link.
    Nothing special in the network.
A solution or reason for this would be nice, but now I know how to work around, so the 'urge' is gone now?
