Special characters / accents in BB 8330 Messenger

I'm having problems adding special characters/accents (á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ) in my new Curve 8330 BB messenger. I used to have a World Edition 8830 and had no problems at all. I've tried holding the letter key and rolling the trackball to the left/right but only the upper case form of the letter appears and actually, this is being done by pressing the letter, not because of the rolling of the trackball. I tried changing the input language to Spanish or French but still it's not working.
I can add them without a problem in an email, memoPad, etc. Also I have no problems when writing in the Windows Live Messenger I downloaded, but have no luck when it comes to the BB messenger.
Is there a way I can add these special characters/accents in my BB messenger? I have the Blackberry 8330 (CDMA), version 4.3.0.127 (Platform 3.1.0.73)
Thanks.

please read some previous discussions about SMS characters encoding, as well as the solution that will enable you to type spanish characters.

  • "Special Characters" Accent Marks delete letter

    Hello fellow Pages users,
I can't quite figure out how to solve a little problem I'm experiencing in Pages. In a text document, I am trying to put an accent mark over a letter (like the diacritical marks one finds over letters in dictionaries to help with pronunciation). I highlight the letter I want to accent, and then I select "Special Characters" from the Edit menu. In the "Character Palette," I select the accent mark I want to use (which is listed under "Punctuation"). But when I select "Insert," the accent mark replaces the letter I want to accent! All I have left is an accent mark on the document, which is useless without the letter it is supposed to accent!
I was wondering whether anyone has encountered this problem (if it is a problem--maybe I'm just going about this the wrong way) and whether there is a workaround. Thank you very much for your time; please let me know if I need to clarify anything.
    Kind regards,
    Chris
P.S. I could just use Microsoft Word, but (1) since my computer is fairly new, I don't have Word at the moment and (2) I would like to learn how to do this in Pages, if it is possible. Please forgive me if this topic has already been covered; I tried to "search" for this topic, but had trouble isolating this specific problem in the Discussions.

    Hello Starfighter
The characters you are selecting from the Punctuation section of the Character Pallette are separate characters - they don't overlay other characters. What you need to do is select a Latin font and pick your character with the accent from there.
It might be simpler for you to use the keyboard viewer instead. When you hold down the ⌥ key you will notice that several of the keys on the keyboard appear orange. This is because they are designed to work in combination with another keystroke to input an accented character e.g. The sequence ⌥ u e will produce the character ë.
    I hope that helps.

  • Unable to access files containing special characters (accents) on a SMB share

I can't access some files on a SMB share.
Those files have one thing in common, that is they contain accented characters (àèéìòù).
I can't access them from finder, terminal, or other softwares.
It works fine when accessing them from a Windows 7 client.
How can I fix this issue?
Is there some SMB option to specify the UTF8 encoding?
In addition, when I create a file with such characters from my mac, the special character shows as ?? on a non-mac client.

it turns out I had way more filenames with accented letters that worked well with MacOS X.
the difference is subtle: those OS X didn't like were like a "composition" of two character (sorry, I don't know the encoding details), that is a vowel and a unicode special character that modifies the previous char adding an accent.
I discovered this while renaming the files from a Windows client, by placing the cursor after "é" in "perché" and hitting backspace, it turned into "perche", and hitting backspace again deleted the "e", turning into "perch".
so I fixed those few invalid filenames.

  • Special Characters in iTunes 7.7

I recently downloaded the newest version of iTunes 7.7. I have hundreds of files with special characters (accents, umlauts, etc) and iTunes continues to change these characters to nonsense characters every time I play that particular song. For example:
Liebst du um Schönheit ---> Liebst du um Sch^nheit
    or the composer
    Camille Saint-Saëns ---> Camille Saint-SaÎns
This is VERY irritating because it only affects the files that I've imported onto my computer and NOT the files I downloaded from the iTunes store. You can try to fix the files all you want but each time you play them, it switches the characters. Does anyone know how to fix this? or how to contact Apple to get them to release a new version? (or at least give us access to the old version) It has only started to do this when I downloaded and installed 7.7. Any help would be appreciated.

My first guess would be that it's simply corrupt font cache files. You can clear them out with Font Finagler.
If that alone doesn't do it, some of the fonts themselves may be damaged. You can replace all, or any number of the fonts OS X came with without having to reinstall the entire OS. The instructions to do so are at the bottom of my article, Font Management in OS X. After replacing any fonts, clear the font cache files again.
Also, two fonts that are known to cause problems are Times Phonetic and Helvetica Fractions. If either are on your system, don't just disable them in your font manager, but locate and delete them.

  • Using special characters (Spanish characters) in Activities name

    Hi everyone,
?:| Does anyone knows if I need to do any extra configuration in my Operating System/Data Base if I'm using special characters (accents) in activities/transitions name. Is there any problem using these type of characters?
    Thanks a lot.

in ALBPM 5.7 you don't need any specific setup to use spanish characters, since we store all information as NVARCHARS.
In Studio, we store projects files in UTF-8, so no problem either.

  • Special Character (accent) hold down key

I am running OS X 10.8.2 but I cannot pull up special characters (accent marks) by holding down a key as shown here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11264. How do I turn this feature on?

Holding down the e key when you are in TextEdit and using the US keyboard layout does not produce a popup menu like this?

  • Special Characters (holding key) has erratic behavior in Word 2008

I am trying to hunt down a mystery for a friend using her macbook air (Lion).
She is trying to add special characters (accents, etc.) to words in a MIcrosoft Word 2008 document.
Sometimes she can hold the key, and the special characters menu will pop up. Sometimes she will get the "old" repeating letter (eeeeeeeeeeeee). I tried to look at everything I could think of, but there seems to be no earthly reason why it does it sometimes but not all the time.
The only explanation I could guess at was that it was Word 2008 and Lion (and not Word 2011).
Does anyone know any fixes or explanations?

I suggest you post your question on Microsofts forums for Mac Office as it's their software you're having issues with:

  • Accents and special characters - how to manage

    Hi,
please could you explain how it is possible to handle accents and other special characters in Business Objects XI 3.1 (Universes and Reports)? Which are the parameters/settings I need to configure for
    Database (ORACLE)
    Application Server (AIX)
    Universe
    WebI
I want to display italian accents ò à è ù ì and some special characters like '@'. Even if they are correctly stored in DB, in WebI I retrieve characters without accent and a '?' for '@'
    Any suggest?
Then, one more thing ...I noticed that creating a new report WebI, characters with accents appear without accents, instead if I create a report with Rich Client and I publish it, then accents are correctly displayed also opening the report with Web Intelligence. I have the application server on AIX, but Rich Client runs on WIN Server ...
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
I had almost the same problem (only different language) and manged to solve it after "google-ing" these links:

FYI, system is AIX 5.3 with Oracle 10g.
I've edited .profile for boxi user and added appropriate export of NLS_LANG variable, then restarted BO and now reports are correct.
I guess you should try adding this line to .profile of your boxi user
    export NLS_LANG=ITALIAN_ITALY.WE8MSWIN1252
    then restart and see results.
    Hope this helps,

  • How does one enter special characters, in particular french accents into text in PS Elements?

I'm trying to produce some artwork in Photoshop Elements with some French text in it, so I need to know how to input special characters for the letters with accents. Anyone got any ideas - I've tried looking for a glyph menu but that doesn't seem to exist on Elements.

Which operating system are you using and version of photoshop elements?
Photoshop elements doesn't have a Glyphs panel or menu.

  • Using accents/special characters in keyboard WAY TOO SLOW!

I'm often using french, and thus many words have many accents (just a short phrase exemple : l'été passé j'ai dû boire l'amère potion de la déception... A short sentence, 5 accents. Can be worse).
I'm typing pretty fast, and already getting frustrated because the french keyboard doesn't have the ' included, which would save so much time in contractions. (Would probably be added automatically if I could use the corrector, but I can't, cause switching from french to english all the time, I just get stupid jumble all the time).
But the worst of the worst is each time I need to type an accented letter, I lose 2.5 seconds! Because that's how long it takes for the accents options to pop-up after I hold my finger on the letter...
    It's completely ridiculous!
Typing a short 3 letter word like "été" takes over 6 seconds!
    It makes me so mad!
I almost completely stopped writing my french emails or Facebook updates and such from my iPod Touch and prefer to wait until I'm on my MBP! Is that normal when you have the chance to own the Touch?!
I've contacted Apple about this many months ago, but like any complaint I've had in the past, never heard of them.
Has anyone else have such a delay with the accents/special characters keyboard (popups)?
Is there something I can do?

Simply copy and paste. Just did it and it worked. Perhaps I'm not understanding something. What do you mean by "insert a font."

  • Files with accented / special characters dissapear / not visable

I did everything which was suggested in threath http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=875688&threadrate=2&messageid= 4170111#4170111 but have another problem which maybe new:
All the files appeared when I first used the USB HD on my Airport Extreme but a few weeks ago I tried to play a song via my Itunes and suddenly all my files containing special characters or accented characters where not recognized anymore. For example "josé gonzales - heartbeat.mp3" was gone...! Also in Finder.
I connected my harddrive to directlly to my mac and all the files we visable again! I did the account trick with password and moved all the files in the sharedfolder but still alle the files with accented characters where not visable??? I can't seem to find a solution? Does anyone got the same problem?

Actually, The inso filters do not even work for me for PDF file versions 1.2+. Is anyone else experiencing the same difficulties ? How often does Oracle update the INSO filters to keep up with vendors (Adobe/Microsoft) coming out with newer versions of their document products ?

  • Jar (or Zip) file with problems in accents, special characters

Hi! I've a servlet that creates a jar (or zip) file and then send it. My problem is that when I create an entry in which the filename has special characters such as accents, when I unjar or unzip de file, it brings a lot of garbage characters. For example, the nex entry:
    Exmenes.doc
    when unzipped is:
    Ex?menes.doc
I've tried a lot of things:
-Setting the locale to ES, MX
-Replacing all the letters with special characters with its unicode (like s.replace('','\u00E1')
-Trying to convert it to UTF8 (new String(path.getBytes(),"UTF8") )
-Replacing the file separator char (according to a workaround that I found in the bug database)
But nothing of this worked, alone or together. I've read that this is (or was) a bug in the API, but don't know if a solution has been found.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

It's not clear what you are asking. Maybe this will help

  • Html special characters

when using the Dreamweaver 'Set Text of Layer' behavior,
    Dreamweaver correctly converts all html
special characters, such as accents like and &,
and quotes and double quotes, so that it is safe
as a javascript string, and will display properly.
I am trying to figure out what PHP function can do the same
encoding, to simple text files (textEdit
    on the Mac).
I have tried htmlentities(), but it does not work, accented
letters like just desappear from the
    string.
I have tried htmlspecialchars() and it does not work
    either...
I have tried about 10 others functions found on Google but
    nothing works.
Anybody knows what exact function Dreamweaver uses to do this
    conversion?

  • Why does text on certain portions of websites, usually when adjacent text contains special characters, become jumbled into seemingly random sets of characters that are not in any way jumbled when viewing the source of the webpage? How can I fix this?

When viewing most text on most websites, it displays properly. However, there are two instances where text will either tend to, or consistently, become jumbled into a mess of seemingly random characters. Oddly enough, these seemingly random characters are not, in fact, random. The same weird character will be used to replace the same regular English text character consistently across the entire area that has been jumbled.
The two instances where this tends to occur most often, or consistently in some cases, are, first, when a paragraph or particular section of formatted text contains special characters, such as Chinese or Japanese characters, or accented letters. When this happens, usually the paragraph that contains the special characters is completely jumbled, while the rest of the text on the page will have intermittent jumbling on a word or two. Most often, the word "the" is jumbled in this case.
The second instance where this happens is when a website uses specially formatted text in some form or another. I, not being an expert at web development, am not sure what kind of formatting causes it, but I can provide consistent examples in lieu of my experience:
    - Example 1:
Example 1 shows a portion of a screen-shot of the website "Joystiq.com". Every single article title on the front page of this blog is consistently jumbled, while the text of the article itself remains untouched. Please note that when this jumbled text is highlighted, it is visible un-jumbled in the right-click menu as well as in the source code of the page. Other consistent instances can be found within many search fields on various websites. For instance, the search bar located at the top right of "Kotaku.com" consistently displays jumbled characters both on its default text of "Search" and on any text that is typed into the search box itself.
    - Example 2:
Example 2 shows both the jumbling of the paragraph containing the character "☆" as well as the subsequent peppering of the rest of the article's text with small jumbled words. Below this is the DOM Source of the selected text which shows how the text itself is being rendered properly within the site's source. Additionally, for convenience, I have edited on to the bottom of the image a small snippet of what the search bar on the same page looks like. Notice how the grayed-out text that normally would read "Search" is instead jumbled.
This issue has been plaguing my browser for the past year or so, and I had hoped that it would go away with subsequent Firefox updates. It has not gone away.
Thank you for reading! Please help!

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,
    Helvetica<br><font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br>
    Helvetica Neue<br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>
    </nowiki></pre>
You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.<br />
Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

  • Apple, please address this issue!!! Searching and special characters

I've found at least one other topic here regarding this issue, but Apple has yet to address it, or even confirm that it's in fact an issue.
A big portion of my library consists of international artists, many who have special/nonstandard characters in their names (e.g. "Tiësto"). In previous versions of iTunes, I could search for "Tiesto" (note the absence of the umlaut over the 'e') and all of those tracks would appear. However, after upgrading to iTunes 9, I'm forced to search for "Tiësto" in order to view those tracks.
Thinking about this issue, it would seem that this is normal behavior, as an artist named "Pàz" isn't necessarily the same as "Paz". But the reality is that NO ONE wants to take the time to search for the alt-code of a special character, and then type it in. Additionally, most people (including me) have a number of reasons for not renaming the artist to conform to standard characters.
Clearly, something has changed between iTunes 8 and 9. And it's incredibly frustrating. A big chunk of my library is virtually inaccessible to me now, unless I search for terms that don't contain special characters.
Apple, **PLEASE** address this issue. I'm not the only one with the problem and it's become a huge pain in my side to have to work around this.

I don't see how it's sloppy or why there should be any reason that it shouldn't have given you both.
Even putting aside that gracenote and others don't have consistent spelling in their databases, that when you download from the iTunes store, who knows what you're going to get, so that one's library could be all over the place and one might not even notice it, accents and other markings don't change the fact that a u is the same letter as ú.
Yes, it's pronounced different. Yes, the difference is very important. But it's the same base letter. And even if it's considered a different letter in another language, in English we have 26 letters and all the accents and tildes and umlauts don't make them a new letter, which is what we're talking about here.
It's a huge pain that looking for an album that has "Zürich" in the field and I type in "Zurich" I can't find it. I have to think about if I really do have that album, maybe I deleted it by accident, etc. And then I think to type "rich" and then it pops up.
That's way too many steps. I don't know keyboard shortcuts and I don't want to learn them. In English, it should be letters, not characters, that count.
