Special characters don't work

I'm using Pages 3.0.2 on Leopard. I am trying to insert the 'section' symbol ('s' and inverted 's'). When I go to Edit -> Special characters, I click on it and nothing happens. My curser is at the insertion point, but nothing happens when I click on it. How do I access the Special Characters?

Question asked and responded several times.
Special Characters rely on the availability of the Character Palette.
If you didn't install it, the menu will do nothing.
Open the System's Preference Pane entitled "International"
click the tab "Input Menu"
then check the box entitled "Character Palette"
and check the box entitled: "Show input menu in menu bar"
After that, selecting "Special Characters" will open the Character Palette.
Of course, as it is not a program feature but a system feature, it is described in the System's help searching with "special characters".
The page is entitled: "Typing _special characters_ and symbols"

  • Mac OSX's "press and hold" shortcut to special characters won't work in Firefox.

    Need to use accented special characters (áéö...) to write in my mother tongue. On Mac OS X 10.8.3 this can be done by simply pressing and holding a key and then selecting the right character from a list that shows up. It functions well in Safari and in Chrome but no success in Firefox 21.0. This makes Firefox a no-go although otherwise a great browser.

    Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
    *You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
    *''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
    If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
    Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • Converting PageMaker doc to pdf: special characters don't convert

    I am using PageMaker 7 on Windows XP. I converted a PageMaker document to pdf (I use Acrobat 8 Professional), which worked fine except for two special characters that didn't convert:  ć and ş, which convert as ae and a degree sign. It took me a while to do insert the characters--the font I was using didn't have the characters (these two and ï). So I used Calibri for the ï and Arial for the ć and ş (they didn't seem to work with Calibri). I checked to see if the fonts were embedded, and the weird thing is that Calibri was not but converted fine, and Arial was (at least, ArialMT was) and the ć and ş didn't convert.
    Help!

    You may want to ask in the Acrobat forum since Reader is simply viewing the results.
    But I would suspect that you are having font embedding issues. Check to see that all fonts are embedded in the document. File>Properties>Fonts.

  • Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Special Keys Don't Work

    The keyboard has function keys that are programmed to perform special operations. The Apple website explicitly states:
    “The extended layout has a full complement of keys, including document navigation controls, a numeric keypad, and special function keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Exposé, and more.”
    Unfortunately, two of these keys don’t work, even after a special software update is installed:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate11.html
    The manual that comes with the keyboard provides instructions on how to program the keyboard, but those instructions either don’t work or are incorrect.
    I've posted more about this and other keyboard issues here:
    http://web.mac.com/resourcesforlife/journal/writings/Entries/2007/8/21Apple_Aluminum_WiredKeyboard.html

    I am using a PowerMac Dual 2.5 GHz G5 system and had trouble with the F3 and F4 function keys. The various suggestions and instructions as provided on several of the discussion threads didn't work for me.
    Here's what worked for me to resolve the problem:
    1. Go here and download the Pacifist utility which helps in exploring installation packages:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
    2. Go here and download the Apple OSX update for PowerPC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html
    OR... get the version for Intel found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
    3. Using the Pacifist utility, open the OSX Update dmg file you just downloaded. You will be able to navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click the install button. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace. There is an option to repeat this response for all files. Complete the process and then exit the Pacifist utility program.
    4. Go here and download the Apple Keyboard Software Update:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
    5. Install the Keyboard update and all functions should automatically work.
    If the above steps resolve the problem for you, please click on the "Solved" button above. Thanks.

  • Non-Western characters don't work on MacOS

    I have a Java application which can display cyrillic characters fine on Linux. But the cyrillic characters do not show up on Mac OS X 10.1. It is a simple String inside a JTextPane. Is there something special I need to know in order to make it work on MacOS?
    - Daniel

    Hey, I also have the same problem on Windows. I think the problem is because Java supports UTF-16 while I think windows support UTF-8. All I can see is '?' marks for the chars.
    Anyway if anyone has a solution ????

  • File links with utf-8 characters don't work in windows

    When I click a link like "file:///C:\символы UTF-8\path" to open in Windows File Explorer it doesn't work.
    ("My documents" folder opens instead).
    How can such links be converted to Windows encoding, when Windows File Explorer is called?
    My settings:
    network.protocol-handler.expose.file = false
    network.protocol-handler.external.file = true

    Thank you!

    I spent many days customizing Firefox and am not going to start over, again.
    I'm not a specialist in coding userChrome.css, am very busy with other stuff.
    It's better if developers restore ALL of the changes once, than thousands of users will spend many days each.
    Dixi.
    Anyway, my main question is:
    '''How to make Firefox send a parameter (filename) to a Windows application, encoded in Windows-1251 instead of UTF-8?
    Would be very grateful.

  • Special characters don't print from PDF

    I have a PDF file that looks correct when it is viewed but when it is printed from Adobe reader, the following characters do not print:  ÇÃçãõé
    Has anyone experienced this issue?  Does anyone know how to resolve it?
    I am using Adobe Reader version 10.0.0.
    Thanks.

    I do not know what causes your issue, or how to fix it.
    But if I experienced the same problem I would try to
    install the latest Reader version 10.1.3
    install the extended font pack for Reader 10
    check if there is any newer device driver for my printer available
    Not sure if this will help in any way, but it's worth a try.

  • SSO fails - userPassword having special characters

    Hi,
    This is a tricky situation i'm handling. I did a insert of around 1000 users into Sun DS whose userPassword contained special characters accepted by DS. mainly + and ;.
    For seeing if authentication will work, i just created a user through AM Console having userid and password both containing special characters. IT WORKED!! Hooray upto now.
    Here comes the problem. The backend insert was done through creating an LDIF file with all user attributes and using ldapadd to insert them. From what i've read, userPassword gets encrypted using SSHA. Fine with me!! Now, when i login using one of the uid's i inserted through the LDIF file, it says Authentication Failed. Okey dokey! I went n changed the same user's (who was born from the LDIF file) password through AM Console and voila!! Now am able to login using the same uid which was not able to login before.
    This is something very strange.. Can somebody throw some light on how I'm supposed to inserting user's password in the LDIF the same way AM Console seems to be doing it? You're help will be much appreciated.
    My LDIF has the following attributes which concern uid and pwd
    dn: uid=test\+,ou=People,o=test,dc=sample,dc=com
    sn: test
    givenname: guy
    uid: test\+
    uid: test+
    userPassword: test+
    I even tried with test\+ in the password. Still doesnt work!! HELP!!!

    thanks for the replies.
    iAMTheGuy,
    I am using AM 7.1(which came along with Sun Portal server 7.1) installed in legacy mode.
    Eric,
    I use ldapmodify to add users. I noticed encryption happens automatically, so i dont know pwdhash is needed. I have to note one thing. The authentication works if I add the user from AMCONSOLE and that user has special characters. This is A OK..
    All,
    But i still have problems with adding user in LDIF file with special character in userPassword. I use only the ldapmodify -a command with the user attributes that are needed to insert a simple user.. stuff like cn,sn,givenname and the likes. I am able to add users & configure them for JDBC authentication to MySQL. This works fine.. LDIF users + JDBC authentication is great. But I might have to accomodate a scenario where LDAP authentication will be used in the near future. So, password havin special characters is needed considering the users in MySQL are allowed such passwords & may be migrated in the future .
    Any workarounds? Or should i give up using passwords with special characters.
    I had a suggestion, not sure if it'll work. Some1 please shed light on this. In case, I store the password with special characters in some other attribute, say title or some custom attribute not shown in AMCONSOLE, can i change LDAP authentication to use that attribute instead of userPassword? is userPassword the constant attribute for authentication?

  • How to add special characters like üöä to a rss feed?

    Hello,
    I've (again) a small problem. In my podcast I use the header
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <rss version="2.0"
        xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"
        xmlns:wfw="http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/"
        xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"
        xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"
        xmlns:sy="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/syndication/"
        xmlns:slash="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"
        xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd"
        xmlns:media="http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/"
    >
    and encoding UFT-8. Every time I add special characters like the German Ö Ä or Ü to my feed, the feed stops working. The validator says that characters like üöä are no UTF-8 characters which is correct of course, but a second podcast which I listen to, uses the same header like I do but it contains the same special characters and it works. Does anyone know what the difference is?
    This is my podcast feed which does not work with üöä
    http://quartett.planeteternia.org/rssfeed.xml
    That's a podcast feed (not mine) which works with üöä
    http://technikwuerze.de/feed/
    Thank you very much
    Kind regards

    http://quartett.planeteternia.org/newsfeed.xml - there is no file at this address. You have a feed at
    http://quartett.planeteternia.org/rssfeed.xml
    but there are no diacriticals in it - presumably you've removed them.
    The other feed simply includes the diacriticals - it's not using html encoding to display them - so I don't know why you should be having trouble. You need to be writing the text in a plain text editor, not a word processor, and I don't know whether there is an issue with Windows here.
    You could try using the codes - they must be the numbered not the named codes:
    ü is &#252;
    ö is &#246;
    ä is &#228;

  • Using XML with special characters - not rendering

    Hello,
    I am using xml to populate the content of a Flash file, but
    we have localized content for different global regions. So, when
    the content contains special characters like "é" they do not
    show up at all in the flash. I tried using &eacute; but that
    just renders the actual code...
    Is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks

    Hi Rothrock, thanks for your reply...
    Flash Version: 8, but the swf was published to be 7+
    compatible.
    The font is Meta Normal, it is embedded, and it does include
    the character.
    I am retrieving the xml by using this script in the html
    page:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    // <![CDATA[
    var fo = new FlashObject("/templates/flash/index.swf" +
    cKiller, "ad-flash", "710", "351", "7", "#FFFFFF");
    fo.addVariable("xmlURL", "/flash_content/products.xml");
    fo.write("ad");
    // ]]>
    </script>
    I am creating the XML using Macromedia Homesite, with the
    encoding declaration <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    The XML is being read fine, only the special characters don't
    show up... so it will cut off the word, or just have an empty space
    where the character should be.
    I am not sure how to specifiy Extended Latin charset in the
    document... could you tell me how to do that?
    Thanks

  • Mysql problem with german special characters

    hi,
    I wrote a software and it worked quite good, but after I installed it on a new machine with j2se 1.4 I've problems with the german special characters.
    this code works good on the old machine (jdk 1.3.1) and prints the wanted characters like ,,.
    Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver").newInstance();
    java.sql.Connection conn;
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/testdb?user=testuser&password=xxxx");
    Statement s = conn.createStatement();
    ResultSet r = s.executeQuery("select something from testtb where id='1'");
    r.first();
    System.out.println( r.getString(1) );
    but on the new machine (j2se 1.4) I only receive the character ?.
    I updated my org.gjt.mm.mysql to the current MySQL Connector/J 3.0.9 and added
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/testdb?user=testuser&password=xxxx&useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=ISO-8859-1");
    but I've got still the same problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Markus

    with "wanted characters like ,,"
    I meant: like &#x00E4;,&#x00FC;,&#x00F6;

  • Sql to remove special characters from my search

    Hi everyone.  I'm very new to sql and have hit another road block.  I am doing a query on my database in oracle sql developer.  I want to search manufacturer numbers but sometimes they were entered with dashes ( 999-99-9999) and other times not (999999999)  is it possible to apply a function to overlook the dash in both my query numbers and in the database mfr_nbr column?

  • Special Characters and Importing .TXT files

    I am trying to import a .txt file that has special Characters.  The ñ works correct, but the ® does not import correctly.  Any Ideas?

    What is strange is that if I open the .txt file up on a windows machine the ® is there.
    When placing your text file, check the "Import Options" box. You can choose platform, encoding, and, um, um, something else. But you need to specify Windows platform, I think. You might need to specify your encoding as well. You can use an app like TextWrangler or Ultraedit or something else to figure out your text encoding. Or you can use the Drunkard's Walk algorithm: just keep trying encodings randomly until you find the one that works.
