Special characters in iWeb sites

Hello
I understand that it is not advisable to use special characters in the name of an iWeb website, but what about when inserting text into the site?
For example would it be ok to write é as in café as part of the heading in a Home page ?

While you publish your site on .Mac, there is no problem."Hélas", it's not the same thing if you publish your website on a private server...
See if the section on Accented Characters on this page helps at all:

Some have reported that using Cyberduck set to UTF-8 for uploading did the trick.

• Special characters in UCM site URL does not give error

Hey Experts,
If we put any special characters in site URL, UCM does not show 404 page .. for e.g.
site URL is http://www.example.com/abc/xyzs/index.html.... if we add special characters in URL for e.g. http://www.example.com/#$abc/xyzs/index.html...
then home page of site is displayed .....http://www.example.com/...
Also http://www.example.com/ abc/xyzs/index.html shows home page ..
Any idea why it is happening ??

I would attribute this behavious to the SSUrlMap filter - which has the job of turning the friendly URL's into SS_GET_PAGE service calls. Apparently the way it parses the URLs and looks for the patterns does not consider these characters.
Is it actually a problem?

• Special characters for iweb

Anyone know where the umlaut is?

Tom, Maybe it was the font....what do you think?
Yes, at least some versions of Bitsumishi seem to be "challenged" in terms of character repertoire:
http://www.dafont.com/bitsumishi.font
No way to use that one for anything beyond ascii. Perhaps you can find a more complete version somewhere.

• Special characters & picture frames do not appear when site is loaded

When I publish my "new" site to a folder and open it everything looks fine; however, when I upload the site to my server, all special characters (bullets, apostrophes, quotes, tabs, etc. along with picture frames show up as ??? or squares. Checked in Foxfire and Safari; no difference between browsers. Note: used iWeb SEO.
Any ideas what's going wrong and how to fix it?

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? I've no experience with either of those apps. I use Web Site Maestro for optimizing and uploading my sites. It works very well.

• Specials characters in navigation menu

I have a site host at MobileMe made with iWeb 08. In my navigation menu I have a word written in my language (Portuguese) which has a non english letter " ç " . It has no problem at all in directing and opening the needed page but I am moving this same site to another Host (Host Excellence) and there I had to take that letter out if I want it working. The same letter used in Text Boxes has no problems. It shows perfectly. Another non-english signs in letters " í " (we called it accent) used in a HTML Snipet, shows different in Firefox.
Does anybody has a clue to solve it ?
Thanks.

"MobileMe has not problem with non-ascii filenames, but some servers have problems with them."
Thanks for that information. I didn't know that.
But unfortunatly Cyberduck is the one I use. I have just found the solution for those letters used in the HTML Snipets. There are several sites over the internet informing HTML codes that "writes" these special characters, like:
http://www.utexas.edu/learn/html/spchar.html
http://www.degraeve.com/reference/specialcharacters.php
http://www.webmonkey.com/reference/Special_Characters
In the snipet I had just to use the codes instead of the "real" letter.
But at the navigation menu, as I don't have access to "codes" I don't know how to solve.
I was thinking in not use the "pre formated" of iWeb and instead of it, write my own.

• Quicktime files not playing on published iweb site.

Hi,
I can't seem to get my QT movies to play on my iweb published site. Occasionally, I can get them to play, but even then it's only in slideshow mode (i.e., they won't play if you just select the movie thumbnail from the album view). I compressed them using QT pro (they are small files) and used the "fast start" option so theoretically they should start playing right away. Some of them just show the QT logo and some show the QT logo with a question mark. I recently upgraded to mountain lion, but had this issue before the upgrade. I use fatcow as my domain host and used to use go daddy. I don't recall having this issue with go daddy, but it seems unlikely that that change is what is causing the issue.
please help.
-alaina

Usually this happens when the path to the movie file is not correct or the files isn't uploaded at all.
Also check your movie file names to make sure there are no spaces or special characters in them.
There are better ways to display movies on a website and you can see some here...
http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Movie-Video/Player-Showcase.html
To make sure your movie will play in all browsers and on all devices, an HTML5 player with flash fallback is the preferred option...
http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Movie-Video/Fallback-To-Flash.html
For mobile devices like iPhone/iPad the movie should be prevented from loading with the page files by using a poster image and setting preload to "none".

• HTML special characters in form input

In my site I store form input in my database. Before I store
the data, I parse out smart quotes, en dashes, and other extended
special characters and convert them into HTHML quivalents such as
’
All is well and good until the user goes to edit their info.
In my form these characters show up in my tags as
their long-winded HTML equivalents, such as ’ instead of
a smart apostrophe.
Is there any way to convert these back to the special
characters from the HTML on the form input text fields so that
users can edit them without being confused?
Thanks.

• Why does text on certain portions of websites, usually when adjacent text contains special characters, become jumbled into seemingly random sets of characters that are not in any way jumbled when viewing the source of the webpage? How can I fix this?

When viewing most text on most websites, it displays properly. However, there are two instances where text will either tend to, or consistently, become jumbled into a mess of seemingly random characters. Oddly enough, these seemingly random characters are not, in fact, random. The same weird character will be used to replace the same regular English text character consistently across the entire area that has been jumbled.
The two instances where this tends to occur most often, or consistently in some cases, are, first, when a paragraph or particular section of formatted text contains special characters, such as Chinese or Japanese characters, or accented letters. When this happens, usually the paragraph that contains the special characters is completely jumbled, while the rest of the text on the page will have intermittent jumbling on a word or two. Most often, the word "the" is jumbled in this case.
The second instance where this happens is when a website uses specially formatted text in some form or another. I, not being an expert at web development, am not sure what kind of formatting causes it, but I can provide consistent examples in lieu of my experience:
- Example 1:
Example 1 shows a portion of a screen-shot of the website "Joystiq.com". Every single article title on the front page of this blog is consistently jumbled, while the text of the article itself remains untouched. Please note that when this jumbled text is highlighted, it is visible un-jumbled in the right-click menu as well as in the source code of the page. Other consistent instances can be found within many search fields on various websites. For instance, the search bar located at the top right of "Kotaku.com" consistently displays jumbled characters both on its default text of "Search" and on any text that is typed into the search box itself.
- Example 2:
Example 2 shows both the jumbling of the paragraph containing the character "☆" as well as the subsequent peppering of the rest of the article's text with small jumbled words. Below this is the DOM Source of the selected text which shows how the text itself is being rendered properly within the site's source. Additionally, for convenience, I have edited on to the bottom of the image a small snippet of what the search bar on the same page looks like. Notice how the grayed-out text that normally would read "Search" is instead jumbled.
This issue has been plaguing my browser for the past year or so, and I had hoped that it would go away with subsequent Firefox updates. It has not gone away.
Thank you for reading! Please help!

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):

<nowiki>data:text/html,
Helvetica
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Helvetica Neue
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
</nowiki>

You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.
Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

• Multiple users password for some pages on iWeb site?

Hi guys,
I've been checking out this topic here on AD, but not really happy with what I found. Is there anybody out here who could help me with a multiple users password html code??? I want a "members only" link on the homepage linked to a page where people have to enter username and password and then go to a special "homepage" where they can click to different PDF files. It doesn't sound that hard, but again, I don't like the html codes I found so far. Hope there is someone out here who knows something nice.
Thanks!!
Marc : )

Marc ~ You may have to +"think different"+ to integrate the following suggestion into your iWeb site, but take a look at: http://drop.io/about
Here's an example: http://drop.io/alancito
...the password there is: guest1
You'll find a downloadable PDF document at the bottom of that page and note that drop.io didn't require an email address, name or personal registration to set up the above “drop”.

• How to add special characters in Flash CS3

Hi, i need the help of some flash guru… these last weeks we were working with cloversites.com to build a community website… the interface is awesome etc etc however we in Malta have eight special characters (GCZ with a dot on top of them and an H with a second strikethrough). Those at cloversites wrestled with the problem, they could see the characters on their computers but when they entered the text in the site, flash couldn't render the special characters. Here is their message:
I am extremely sorry about this, but we were unable to add in your characters. We attempted to add them into our software but they did not work. We worked on it all morning and realized that we need an extra add-on for our keyboards. Adding special characters is nothing new to us and have answered this request for many of our international users. For some reason, the Maltese characters did not work in our sites. For example, our "option-G" is the copyright symbol so it will need to be transferred over to international characters.
Unfortunately, we thing that this has to do with Adobe Flash CS3. The software allowed me to embed the characters, but we were unable to render them on the web. Which led us to think it had to do with the version Adobe is running and its inability to render the text through its software on the web. None of the characters worked on the web, and it looks like its just an Adobe bug. So we are able to type and use the Maltese characters, but Adobe Flash is having trouble with them.
Does anybody know of any possible solution?

see if codepoints-to-string() is suitable for you ..

• Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (in Japan)

Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (I'm in Japan)
I've tried making a tiny site but my own phone (au A5516T by Toshiba) can't display it.
The URL is accepted but displays just a white blank screen.
I can't see anything about it in this iWeb forum or iWeb Help. Which I guess means that either it's impossible or that it's so elementary I shouldn't have to ask!
Is there some special code involved?
Any hints much appreciated. Thanks.

• Infotypes special characters are not displayed correctly

hi experts,
While entering names with special characters in infotypes it happens that some of them are not correctly displayed .
can you please help me out as soon as possible
thnx
harish

Thank you for your fast reply :)
The site is not online available unfortunately.
The character encoding used by Firefox is UTF-8 (automatically detected) which is correct. I even tried manually switching to other Chinese standards, but none of them brought a satisfieable result.
The site itself does not specify a font (the css only contains "font-family: Arial,Tahoma,Verdana;"), and the site does not provide a custom font either.
I noticed that if i copy and paste the text into word, the characters are wrongly displayed too using the font MS Mincho (so I assume Firefox automatically selects this font to display the characters which would explain why they are displayed incorrectly)
Ah, I now included the font "SimSun" in the css (which is installed on in windows and using this font the characters are displayed correctly in word) - and this solved he problem!
Thanks for your help!!

• Special Characters in a HTML region

I recently upgraded from HTMLDB 2.0 to APEX 2.2 and I'm having trouble with some special characters.

I have HTML region in which I display a hidden item. The hidden item (P1_TEST) has the following value:

STRING1<br>STRING2<br>STRING3<br>

The region source has a single reference to the hidden item:

&P1_TEST. <- the period is there. :)

In HTMLDB 2.0 the display in the HTML region would render the region as

STRING1
STRING2
STRING3

In APEX 2.2, the region is rendered as

STRING1<br>STRING2<br>STRING3<br>

which is obviously not what I want.

Any ideas anybody? I must be missing something simple. :)

Thanks, Kent

Kent - This is explained here: Re: Computed Region TItles being Escaped in Apex 2.2 You can use an application item instead of a hidden page item as a quick solution. To continue to use a page item you can make its display type Display as Text (does not save state) and set its display condition to Never.
Although this change from 2.0 to 2.2 necessitates this type of inconvenient program modification, the benefit is that a cross-site scripting vulnerability that existed in your application will now be corrected.
