Special Effects Software

Hi! I'm looking for a video effects software for a MacBook Pro. I looked at this program (http://fxhome.com/hitfilm), the standard version, and that would work very well for me, but it is only for windows, PC, etc.
Basically, what I want to do is magical/energy effects, smoke/fire, gun shots, explosions, and a really good greenscreen would be good as well. I'm using Final Cut ProX for editing, but it's greenscreen keeps deleting a green cloack against a blue background! (But the blue shirts don't dissapear) ANyway, I'm looking for that kind of software. Please help me!

  • Special effects software to complement imovie

Anyone know of affordable special effects software that is easy to use. Blender has been frustrating. I am looking to add special effects to my movies and then format them in imovie. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Ziatron,
Thanks for your reply. When you say you use iMovie '06 with iDVD 09 all the time---can you explain further? I guess I go back to my original question---Would iMovie '09 "accept" the edit done in iMovie HD or iMovie '06?
I do like the organizing layout (boxes with titles) much better on the previous versions, as well as some more detailed audio editing---but I'm grudgingly moved on to iMovie 09, and have already loaded a lot of my material (and keyworded them) into iMovie 09. I think I'm going to stick it out with this project.
Thanks in advance for any further advice you can share.

  • Special Effects / Graphics software

I'm not even sure what you call it. Graphics? When it comes to titling, I feel really limited in the impact I can create with Elements 11. What supplemental graphics programs do people use??
    Thanks!

  • Special effects help

I am looking for special effects for imovie such as laser, gunfire, censor, etc. I found software called Vitrix Arsenal but their online store has been closed for a long time and their support never replies. Does anyone know what/where else i can buy special effects like the mentioned above? Or prefabley where i can buy Vitrix software?

Vitrix is somehow 'vanished', that is indeed true..
another good source for plug-ins are:
    www.geethree.com
    www.imovieplugins.com

if you take the plunge (100$), have a look at this standalone effect machine:

  • Special effects (without 3rd party plugins)

    Hi,
So, I am now happy with time manipulartion (using Twixtor), workflow for my project (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4728201#4728201) and the new PC hardware that we have. I am now coming to the point where the few actual special effects we want for out project need to be investigated. Most of the project will be Green screen compositing work of our characters in their sets, and I am pretty comfortable with creating space scenes in AE - there are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on that one - and some of the scenes will have them walking around "real life" environments. The bulk of the effects I forsee now, will be Fire, Smoke, Clouds and rocks.
Fire and smoke, I am busy looking towards either recodring our own footage, or purchasing footage from Video CoPilot or someone - my actual qustion is, can I create realistic looking rocks in AE without any third party plug ins? Say for instance, a volcano erupts, and I want rocks blowing and falling around - can this be done believable without a dedicated 3D program? If so, does anyone have a link to some tutorials on it, or even just an idea of where I can start?
    Thanks guys,
    Pierre

    Hi Guys,
thanks for all the replies - once again (and I guess I knew this before I posted the question - but thought that squeezing my eyes shut and clipping my heels together might allow a different outcome) I see that the answer is completely dependant on what it is I want After Effects to do for me. I have been in the IT industry for many many years now, but never have I come accross a piece of software quite as versatile and far ranging as After Effects! I am learning every day, and enjoying every moment of it (although it starts getting a liitle overwhelming and scary at times). I am going to spend this week runnign through trapcode tutorials, so that I can figure out exactly what the products can do, and then I have arranged a team sit down next week to check through each and every script, make a list of effects required, and balance that out against what I have learned form the products. I will look at a few other products as well, not just Red Giant. I'll admit off the bat, I love Video CoPilots stuff, simply because the Andrew makes the demos and tutorials look so darn good and interresting - wether we would ever use a fresh apple element, with a mercury texture...who knows - but I still want it!
Anyway, thanks again - you have all given me tons of places to go and look, and after a week or so, if my brain has not exploded form all the input, Ill add a small outcome to the thread - for interrest sake.

  • Unwanted special effects in iMovie 6

Macbook pro OSX 10.6.8  iMovie 6
I know i should upgrade but the newer iMovies are not intuitive and v6 does everything i need it to.
Some unwanted special effects are suddenly appearing in my iMovie 6, flying saucers, fireworks, balloons floating thru, flipping, waving screens.  I think it must be coming from some shareware installation i looked at for some special purpose, maybe masking or subtitles, but i cannot find any on my computer, (except MeditEdit).
Importing directly from my camera, which i frequently do, is totally messed up.
I have thrown away all the preferences i can find but they keep coming back everytime i open the application iMovie.
    Where are they?
    What software installed this?
How do i shut it off or kill it?
    Help.

    Hi
    First
    • trash iMovie pref files - in User library/preferences - You've said You've done that
    • repair permissions - Disk Util tool
Then You can now look into User library/iMovie and here Plug-ins
    • I moved all of them out onto DeskTop/Finder - when iMovie IS NOT running.
    • Now test iMovie
Alt: Start a new User Account
    • Log into this
    • Re-try iMovie
Does it run OK now ?

  • Special effects editing question for iMovie '09

    Hi,
I understand that iMovie '09 doesn't support many (any?) add-on software packages for special effects editing.
Meanwhile, I'm editing some sports clips in iMovie '09,, in which I'd love to have a "spotlight" on a player, (where the other action/background is dimmed), or use an arrow to point at a player---that sort of thing.
Is there a way to---say, do this edit in iMovie HD, or iMovie '06, with special software, then re-import it back into my iMovie '09 project?

    Ziatron,

  • What would be best for special effects?

I am a frequent user of iMovie 4 and often create home movies. However, the iMovie provides very few and very primitive effects. What would be the best software for me to aquire new creative special effects (e.g. flames, explosions, etc.) If anyone can recommend the best product for my needs I would appreciate it.

My camera alone is working fine but my main problem is when I want to use special effects like in Photo Booth. It is either scattered parts of what is in the camera or just black blobs. I have already been to the Genius Bar so I don't know what to do next.

  • Special effects - alpha gain

Can someone tell me how to use this special effect in QT pro 7? I want to make a clip from an imported avi, adding alpha transparency so I can use in Flash to make an flv video... Can someone explain to me?

It's not a special effect. It is a filter to adjust existing alpha channels that are inside your movie. It does not create an alpha channel from your source files. It merely enhances them.
I stopped using Flash a few years ago but the software has improved over time. But, being a muxed file format, they are difficult to edit (next to impossible) via QuickTime. Only the older, Flash 5 and lower, publish options can even be opened by QuickTime and the "stage" (area of action and motion) can't be made "transparent".
Exporting to .flv (Flash Video) is another issue. You'll need to create a "player" for it.
I've never used Poser but I'm sure you can find online forums to get more answers.
Seems to me that you would want to export from Poser to an image sequence that supports alpha channels. These files could be imported into QuickTime Pro at a frame rate you designate.
The Alpha Gain filter in QuickTime export to movie shouldn't be confused with the "green screen" (now mostly blue screen) effect used to mask the background.

How do you do it in iMovie?  I have version 10.0.2

this 'effect' is basically two... :
    • 'micro-edits' - 1 frame from clip#1, 1 frame from clip#2, repeat a few times.. done. A bit 'fiddly' in iMovie, but possible.
    • 'artificial depth of field'  - have a look:
first the cam is focussed on the girl with the long hair in the background; then, while recording, focus shifts to girl in foreground; then, in the micro-edits, they jump btw., the two focus-levels (plus shift the framing, but that is another story…)
to accomplish that in the same shot (which it is obviously in your demo), you'd need a tilt-shift-effect, or a software which allows to apply 'masks' to moving images to apply blurr to each layer.
=> no way to accomplish that in iMovie.
as Jim already stated: Motion5, or FCPX. And this is no 'push button/done' effect, needs lots of manual adjustments.

When I have watched the tutorials, they are showing a long list of effects in the action box. • How to install plugin and exta filter in photoshop cs ? and any special filter for special effects ?

how to install plugin and exta filter in photoshop cs ? and any special filter for special effects ?
kindly recommend me any best one and tel me step by step how i will add more plugins n filters

A Plug_in normally come with an installer or install instructions. Check the documentation for the plug-in you trying to install.  It sounds like you don't know what plug-ins you want to install.  In that case you don't need to install any.  At some point you may read about a plug-in and what it can do and feel you have a need for it.  Then you will have a reason to install a plug-in that is not installed by default.  There may also be a cost involved most worthwhile plug-ins are not free.
Adobe Optional Plug_ins downloads are Plugins Adobe want to remove from Photoshop  and no longer install by default. Also at some point in time these will no longer install into the current Photoshop for Adobe will remove feature or interfaces the use. For example the CS5 optional plugins will install in Windows CS6 perpetual version 13.0.1.3 but not in Subscription version 13.1.2 or perpetual Mac version 13.0.6 fot its 64bit only and the Mac CS5 optional plug-in for Picture package is only a 32bit plug-in.
You will need to keep and maintain old versions of Photoshop if Adobe remove features you use in new versions of Photoshop.
