Special permissions

I end up with nine pages worth of "We are using special permissions for the file or directory..." when I repair permissions in DiskUtility. I've been attempting to repair permissions for several weeks now, but there's been no change.
Can anyone help?

  • If I transfer files to a new hard drive and "special permissions files" are

    I am installing a new, larger, hard drive in my Powerbook G4. I want to "clone" the old hard drive onto the new one. However, when transferring files to a PowerMacG4, as an intermediary in the process , via Target Disk Mode , I get the message that "certain files with special permissions will not be copied".
    I did check the messages in this forum and found that there is a way around this problem. However, it seems that I would need a clean hard drive to do this and I don't want to reformat my G4 PowerMac in order to use that drive as an intermediary in the process.
    The simple question is then: What will happen if I copy the G4Powerbook files via Firewire to the G4PowerMac drive, ignore the permissions warning, and then transfer that data to the newly installed drive in the Powerbook???? Will there be important systems files missing, or will some of my programs simply not work. Perhaps I could then just reinstall anything that's not working (that required special permissions)?
    This probably sounds like a stupid question to you Mac gurus, but I've never really understood the significance of "permissions".

    You cannot simply copy files from one drive to the other. Also, if you clone to the hard drive in another computer, then you must use a separate partition on that drive. You cannot clone to a drive that already has OS X installed on it.
    The cloning process works as follows:
    How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder of the drive you are cloning.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
    For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

    Disk Utility no longer reports the special permissions when verifying or repairing your permissions in Mac OS X 10.46; the list of special messages may be available by opening the Console in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and looking at the logs.

  • Using Disk Utility-It Just keeps Saying Using Special Permissions

    I repair permissions every day like a good boy. The last couple od days, there are about 25 lines that say Using Special Permission, instead of reapaired. The Powerbook is running fine and I ran Diskwarrior and Techtool Pro, and it's fine. But it just says the same thing, Using Special Permissions. Running 10.4.3. Any ideas?

    You don't have a problem and repairing disk permissions does not need to be performed daily or on a regular basis - only after installing software (especially after installing 3rd party software that uses an installer) and as a system troubleshooting procedure only.

  • Multiple "Special Permissions" after upgrading to OS 10.4.4

    After upgrading from 10.4.2 to 10.4.4, I have run disk utility several times. Each time, it uses hundreds of "Special Permissions" for DVD Player and Library Widgets (address book, calendar, flight tracker, phone book, etc, etc, etc).
    I inadvertently started disk utility before I had completed downloading (installing?) the upgrade.
    Did I do something wrong?
    I am temporarily living in Ukraine. Yesterday I discovered that my Tiger installation disk is corrupted...and of course, I don't have back up!
    Am I screwed?

    The only time you should be worrying (oh well.......worry?...I would say....pay some attention) when running DU is when it says something like:
    "blablabla rr-w-rw should be -rrr--w blablabla"
    Keep repairing permissions until none of the above is to be seen.
    Don't worry about the very list saying "we are using special permissions.....".
    That's just part of how DU works I think.

    If you want use above codeplex solution, You can deploy this your SharePoint farm using Powershell commands
    You can add the solution using "Add-SPSolution" command
    Add-SPSolution c:\code\SharePointProject2\bin\debug\SharePointProject2.wsp
    Once you have added it, you can deploy the same using "Install-SPSolution" powershell command.

    After this activate the feature related to above solution. Remaining steps are available in that codeplex solution on the configuration.
    Other option is you can add the JQuery script to the NewForm.aspx or Editform.aspx wherever applicable to a CEWP and provide the target audience for that webpart so it will execute the script only for them.

  • Special Permissions to not allow COPY from server

    Here's the scenario. We host a Drive, on the Airport Extreme, called "SERVER" - all computers can mount it over the network, copy to and from... all is well.
    What we'd LIKE to be able to do....
    Have it set, so that no one on the network (Other then a special permission user, or someone with a password) can actually COPY, locally to their LapTop Drive... but everyone can OPEN, Modify, and Save the documents on the server, over the network.
    We have several interns coming into the studio, that we'd like to be able to work on these documents.... enter information, even print out, while open in an application... but not save locally. At the end of the day, none of these documents leave the building / server / network.
    This even possible with a standard Airport Extreme hosted Volume?

    Ya, I figured... even as I was typing it out, I'm realizing that if the document was open on their machine, for adding data.... they'd need to "Not have write access to their own Drive / Computer" to save the document locally.
    My only hope, of intention, form the "Original Post" was to see if there was a way, on a "FILE Level" to "Lock a document to a directory" so that it could be modified, saved, re-saved THERE, but NOT Saved, or copied to any other directory.
    A special permission, that allows you to open, save, and print a doccument, thats "Permission locked" to a specific folder, or location, but any attempted "Save As" - and changing the location, results in an error, a "You can not copy This doccument"

    Is it possible to give my technicians permissions to create email/windows accounts in exchange, but not be able to read mailbox content of other users?

    By default nobody can read mailbox content except who owns the mailbox. If your technician wants to read mailbox content then he has to grant full mailbox permission the mailbox that he wants to open.     You can create a custom role for technician and remove ability to execute Add-MailboxPermission cmdlet. 
    Now if you want to give him this ability to grant permission and don't want to block it for some reason (if he is helping for shared mailbox permission etc...) on other mailboxes then you can give him look for
    Admin Audit Log (which is by default enabled) on permission to see if he is granted permission to himself or not and if yes then you can ask him...
    Now if you want to look at granular level on what he is trying to access inside mailbox then you can enable
    Mailbox Audit log but that has to be enabled at each mailbox level.

  • Can't give iis users special permissions to folder in iis 8

    I installed an ssl certificate to a 2012 server (had been working on a 2008 server for years). I can't duplicate the iis usrs rights that existed on the previous server. It's not available (grayed out). And not available in the advanced tab. I am logged
    in as administrator. There is no way to add that attribute, even though that's the only way I got the ssl site to work in 08 server installs. I checked with the certificate issuer and there is nothing wrong with it. It displays in the ssl settings under iis.
    I also have the problem of the folder where the file needed to be written to resides. The folder has the read only box checked and when I uncheck it and click apply, it doesn't save after exiting. I have tried using attrib -r at the command prompt, with no
    success either. It is evident that these iis users coming to the website can't write to the ssl file unless they have special permission, as well as read, execute (they run an asp script), write. Since I can't give them these rights, the website doesn't function
    on this server. I did turn off the firewall. The message you get when you go to the url is a 404 and "you don't have rights to this directory etc."

  • Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

    I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
    Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
    Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
    1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
    2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
    This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
    Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
    Please help!!!

    TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
    1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
    3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
    Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
    "We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
    This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
    "We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
    "We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
    Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
    There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.
    Spurious Permissions Errors In 10.3.x
    When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • What is the correct procedure for repairing permissions

    I am getting ready to upgrade to Tiger from Panther. I have used the disk utility to repair permissions after an upgrade or hardware addition. I have always done it using the disk utility and not from a boot up on the OS install dvd.
    Is there a difference? I notice that if I do a repair permissions 2 or 3 times in a row that some of the same permissions are repaired again and again.

    I assume you are referring to the log entries which contain "We are using special permissions..."
    If so, you can safely ignore those messages. They are purely informational. This is not indicative of a permissions problem.
    There is also no need to repair permissions while booted from the system DVD. Running it the way you are is fine, and you should only need to do it when you have a problem with your machine resulting from improperly set permissions.

  • Permissions oddity in Applications folder

    I've noticed two Permissions oddities.
    When I attempt to drag a downloaded application into the Applications folder, where it is "replacing" an existing file, an error message appears telling me I have insufficient permissions. I first need to remove the older application (if I'm moving a Folder the move requires me to enter my password - never saw that in Tiger, otherwise the command/delete functions w/o the password prompt) before I can move the new application into the folder (without need for password).
    Also, I attempted to "update" an Application via the Internet. The developer attempts to reinstall an undated version, however mid-way an error prompt appears "insufficient permissions".
    I looked at a number of Info panels for files in the Applications folder. Some have "System" (root level) and Admin (2nd level) listed, both "read and write". Others have "unknown" listed at the root level>Read and Write. Applications folder lists "System" at the Root Level. My admin account is called "Gemini". No where do I see this name.
    Wondering what changes I can safely make in the Permissions (is there a Terminal command?) to eliminate this problem.

    The Applications folder has special permissions set on it so that the preinstalled applications can't be deleted by accounts that otherwise are able to write to it; this only affects items owned by accounts other than yours. After dragging an application to the Applications folder, change its owner to your account from the Get Info window.
    If you need to do this and aren't concerned with deleting preinstalled applications, try the following in the Terminal:
    sudo chmod a-t /Applications/

  • Unable to Repair Permissions- What should I do?

    Hi Guys
    My goal is to replace my original internal hard drive on my Power Mac G4, but I have hit a glitch.
    I have backed up OSX 10.3.9 on my new External Hard Drive, then made a folder on my external drive called "OSX Backup from G4", and copied all these files into this folder. Then I deleted the original copied back up, and have all this stuff in this "OSX Backup from G4" folder. (I am keeping all my backups from different operating systems in separate folders, i.e. OS 9.2 and OS 10.3.9 from my G4, and OSX 10.4.1 from my Mac Book Pro.)
    Ok, then I backed up all the Macintosh HD-OS 9.2 into my new external drive. But when I tried to copy them into a folder called "Macintosh HD Backup from G4", I get this error message:
    One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied. Do you want to skip them?"
    So every time this error cam up, I just kept hitting "continue". I am wondering if these files needing permission are necessary, because when I compared the original 0S 9.2 files to the files I copied inside the "Macintosh HD Backup from G4" folder, they seem to match up ok.
    So, I tried to repair permissions just to be safe. I inserted the 9.2 install disk, pressed the "C" key to start from this disk, thinking I would see an option for repairing permissions in Disk First Aid, but there is no such option. Am I missing something?
    Can I repair permissions for OS 9.2 from the OSX 10.0 Install Disk? (I am currently running 10.3.9).
    What should I do? (This whole process seems to be taking forever!)

    I am keeping all my backups from different operating systems in separate folders, i.e. OS 9.2 and OS 10.3.9 from my G4, and OSX 10.4.1 from my Mac Book Pro.
    Hmmmm... I think this is where it gets messy. OSX wants files in special places (some hidden in normal use), with special permissions,and does not like to be dragged from place to place. This is why one uses a cloning tool. Usually when one wants to have multiple OSX versions on the same physical hard drive you have to partition the drive into a separate partition for each version of OSX. I think the only alternative would be to make a disk image and put items there (but they would not be bootable).
    I don't know what's going on with OS9 unless it is getting caught up in the confusion generated by dragging system folders into places they don't want to be. In fact OS9's System Folder is pretty much to only one that will tolerate being dragged to another place, especially if you're only interested in using it as Classic. OS9 doesn't use permissions which is why you can't repair permissions on it. It also doesn't use invisible files unless a third party installer placed something there as invisible.

    It's been at least a month since I repaired my disk permissions, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to give 'em a whirl. The most noticable thing between then and now is installing the software for an HP All-In-One 1410 printer, which has been working fine. I repaired the permissions while booted from my disk (as opposed to the Software Restore discs), with iChat ans Safari running, neither of which doing anything intensive, such as flash, images, downloading files or instant messaging. So, this log came up. Help?

    If you can boot your machine, try repairing permissions from the Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. I've seen evidence when booted off the CD and using Disk Utility that it does not appear to have access to the same permissions package under certain circumstances. Why this happens I can't say, since I don't work for Apple.
    Double check with HP's website that you are using the correct version of their drivers for your operating system. If it doesn't explicitly state 10.3.9, I would ask their support department if they know which version of the drivers work best with 10.3.9.
