Special thanks to Bob Timmons - Airport Extreme ATT DSL 5100

Hello,
I wanted to say that reading the discussion threads was very helpful. Especially the advice that Bob Timmons gives.
I just purchased an Aiport Extreme from Amazon, so new that the serial number couldn't be found on Apple's support sites.
I was replacing my older Linksys wireless router because the wifi antennas were failing.
My internet connection is ATT (old SBC) DSL and the modem that i have had forever is the SpeedStream 5100.
The airport utility setup was rather easy. You just have to know your PPoE username and password which I did. I direcly connected the modem to my MacBook Pro and i was online. So that verified that my DSL settings are correct.
However, when I cabled everything together with the Airport Extreme I still only saw a yellow flashing light and no IP address.
After persuing these discussion forums I read that Bob recommends restarting all of the devices including the clients (my MacBook Pro). I never thought of doing that because i have a lot of programs open and a lot tabs open in Chrome, etc. After realizing that i'm running out of options of what could be wrong, i bit the bullet and restarted my MacBook Pro, restarted the modem, and the Airport Extreme. When they all came back online, WHAM, green light was shining brightly.
I didn't have to change anyting inside my actual modem configuration.
Thank you Bob Timmons for leading me to the right solution. This is for you!
-Vlad G.

Glad that this helped you, and thanks for the nice words.

  • Bridge mode for airport extreme or dsl modem? Recomendations?

I'm upgrading to a 'blisteringly fast' 12 Mbps with my local DSL ISP (no cable in my area), and I'm thinking of changing out my
My current, antiquated setup is with a Speedstream 5200 Modem/Router (8 Mbps max) with a Linksys E1200 802.11n router. We have an Apple TV with HDMI into a stout Panasonic plasma, 2 Macs, 3 iPads (2xgen4 + mini), 3 5C iPhones and an old Dell Winbox (XP vintage that I will toss out) that access this configuration in a good-sized house (2 stories, ~4000 sq.ft.).
The Linksys 'n' speed router is somewhat adequate, but we want to do movie/video/music streaming to the AppleTV and we want to buy a new Mac (probably a Mac-mini to replace the Winbox). I also want to future-proof this setup for a few years, given the pain it usually is to do a wholesale swap-out like what I'm contemplating. I want to swap-out this pairing with:
a DSL modem/router to either a Netgear DM111PSP-100NAS (ADSL2+) or an older, but robust Actiontec GT-701D (or the newer -NF).
an Airport Extreme (802.11ac) to manage my Apple menagerie for fast streaming, and also to hang a poor man's network file storage off the USB port.
I'm asking for some recommendations from the community at-large so I can minimize the hassles when I do this swap-out.  Which of the two devices (the modem/router or the AE router) should I put in bridge mode? Any performance penalties one way or another, or hidden gotchas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Craig

I'm back and wanted to put a coda on this thread.
First of all, many thanks to the recommendations by Tesserax and LaPastenague.  You helped allay my fears in converting over to the Time Capsule environment.
The home network is working just great.  Internal speed-ups all the way around.  TC is working great as both a file server AND a Time Machine site.  The Netgear DSL modem is the firewall and the DHCP server for my network.  As stated in earlier posts, it has superior firewall capabilities compared to the Time Capsule.  I configured the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode with my iPhone 5C, the configuration of which only took a couple of minutes.  The speed between the 802.11 ac devices, my TC and the new Mac Mini, are unbelievably fast--on the order of 150+ Mbps at a distance of 40 feet or so through several walls--beamforming really does appear to work as advertised.  That doesn't matter overall except for the Time Machine aspects, as my DSL line is a blisteringly fast 12 Mbps.
The only glitch I've had over the last 3 weeks was due to a short power outage, and the main problem was the networking with hard ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  I had to reboot the Netgear modem, as it was in a funky state, while other devices, such as my new Mac Mini, were waiting for the modem to vend a DHCP address.  It turns out that the Apple TV had some persistence with its old DHCP-vended address, and the Mac Mini somehow received its IP address first--which conflicted with the Apple TV.  Now, I'm not sure why the wirelessly networked Mac Mini beat the Apple TV to receiving a DHCP vending first, but it did, and the address persistence of the Apple TV created a conflict on the Apple TV network connection.  Once I realized the problem, I shut down the Mac Mini and made sure all my other devices were off as well.  I then restarted the entire network, the Apple TV received its IP address first, and all was well again.  Granted, I could have disconnected the ethernet and allowed really fast wireless to the Apple TV, but it's only 4 feet away from the Time Capsule, so I might as well have the fastest pipe available for HD streaming to my large-format HD television.
The switchover was absolutely painless.  Both the modem and the Time Capsule took, all total, about 10 minutes to set up and configure.  Much easier than with Winboxes.  Other than the Apple TV IP conflict after the power outage, it's been a real delight.
I'm very happy I switched to this new network configuration.

  • How do I change my airport extreme from dsl to cable?

I have recently changed my ISP from AT&T dsl to Comcast cable and don't know how to change the settings to my Airport Extreme. Please help.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Click the Wireless Options tab near the bottom of the window
Select the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels that you want to use
Click Update to save the new settings
Assuming that the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, the router will automatically scan to find the best available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels to use.
It is possible that you might be able to guess as well as the utility, but you may not be able to guess better unless your scanning equipment will reveal "hidden" networks in your area.

  • Connecting airport extreme, netgear dsl modem, windows 7, and Macbook pro

I'm having a problem connecting my airport extreme to my netgear modem, windows 7 pc and my Macbook Pro.  Until a few days ago, I had a Westell wireless dsl modem and everything worked fine.  Now, the only way I can connect to the internet is through my desktop pc and the hardwired modem.

If your goal is to extend/boost the range of your Netgear router with either or both of the AirPorts, this will not work wirelessly ... at least, not completely by wireless. That is because, WDS is not standard and each manufacturer has had creative license to implement it as they see fit for their products.
Instead, you have at least two other choices to use the Netgear (as the main Internet router) with the AirPorts:
Connect one AirPort directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure both AirPorts for an extended wireless network. In this configuration, you would be running two separate wireless networks; one created by the Netgear, and the second the extended network created by the AirPorts.
Connect both AirPorts directly to the Netgear by Ethernet, and then, configure all of the routers for a roaming network. In this configuration, there would be a "single" wireless network where wireless network clients can literally roam from one router to another and still be on the "same" wireless network.

  • Connecting iphone via airport extreme on dsl

I just moved to a location that does not have access to cable internet and have switched to DSL..(*****). Is there any way for me to just connect without having to use PPPoE. with cable all I had to do was walk into the room..
Can anyone tell me how to connect an iphone via PPPoe?? If I connect to the router I still access the internet. How can I put my user name and password into my iphone like i do on my laptop via PPPoE or is there another way to connect??
    Please help!!

    Hola ehaser,
I have DSL and I have my Airpot Extreme connected to the DLS router using PPPoE. You do not have to enter the PPPoE info on the iPhone. All you need is the network name and password you have set up for on the Airport Extreme.

  • Configure airport extreme with dsl modem

Need Help-I have a new DSL modem CenturyLink Q1000z, that is providing wireless to my  home.  I want to put it in bridge mode and use my aiport extreme base station(square one).  Please explain how to configure it with aiport utility 6.0.  I will need step by step as I cannot seem to find it in any forum.  thanks

I have a new DSL modem CenturyLink Q1000z, that is providing wireless to my  home.  I want to put it in bridge mode
I suppose that it is possible that another CenturyLink user might have done this and will see this post...but at the same time it is also highly unlikely that this might occur.
Your best bet may be to refer to the Support Site for Centurylink for answers:
    http://qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/modems.html
Once you have the modem in Bridge Mode, you can configure the AirPort Extreme as follows using AirPort Utility 6.0:
Connect and Ethernet cable from the Centory Link modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the AirPort Extreme
    Open AirPort Utility 6.0
Click on Other AirPort Base Stations in the upper left hand corner of the window
    Click on the AirPort Extreme
AirPort Utility will take a moment to analyze things and then suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network"
Edit the name of the Wireless Network and Base Station as you wish
    Enter a Password and Confirm
Enter your user name and password for your provider's service
Leave the Service Name area completely blank
    Set Connection to Always On
    Click Next
When you see the message that AirPort Utility has configured your AirPort Extreme, click Done

  • How do I configure an Airport Extreme base station to receive and distribute a wi-fi network from a broadband wireless router?

I have recenly upgraded my broadband service and now have a wireless router. My old network configuration was a router connected by ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme base station which then broadcast my wireless network (I also had an Airport Express base staion set up as a wi-fi booster elswhere in the house).
I now have two networks (my original network and the new network from the wireless router) and wish to amalgamate these into one.
Ideally I wish to use the Airport Extreme base station as the "remote" booster (I have purchased Powerline adapters for this purpose) but don't know how to configure the Airport Extreme base station in order to to this.
Can you advise on the best set up for this please?
My Mac is running OS X 10.8.2 and the Aiport untility is version 6.1.
    Thanks in anticipation.

The AirPort Extreme should be configured to "create a wireless network" with the same WiFi network name, security type (usually WPA2 Personal) and password as your existing router. It should be configured as connection type Ethernet and be in bridge mode.

  • HT4145 how to connect the i pod to airport extreme

I am trying to figure out how to connect to my airport extreme from my ipod- anyone who can give me a stepby step answer?
I am not sure which operating system it is...
    Thanks!

If the AirPort Extreme is allowing other devices to connect, it is not the issue.

  • Using VOIP router with Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'm sorry if this question has been asked before...I couldn't find it if it has!
I currently have a Draytel 2800VG router for my internet connection, and connect my family Windows desktop and my MBP through it no problem. I use this router because it has telephone ports for VOIP (the SIP settings are in the router).
I would like to buy an Airport Extreme so I get the benefit of the faster wireless speeds on my MBP. I will obviously then connect my desktop to the AE by cable.
Can someone tell me if there is any way I can connect my Draytel router to the AE so I can still run my phone through for VOIP?
    Thanks
    Nige

I assume the airport extreme setup allows me to specify that it's a 'bridge'?
Yes, you can set it as a bridge by using the AirPort Utility: (AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))
When you say 'separate n wireless network', do you mean give it a different SSID, or band, to the Draytek...or something else.
Yes, both the Draytek and the AirPort should be configured to use different SSIDs and (of course) different radio modes.

  • Airport Extreme: Specification power supply

    Hello:
after having read all the existing material on this site, I still have a very easy question:
The power supply for the Airport Extreme, which electrical power range does it support? Does it only work in the US (100-120V) or would it also work abroad (eg. 100-240V)?
Would be nice if someone could have a look at the bottom of the power supply and post the result.
    Thanks.
    Peter.

The Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n) supports 100-240V.
    Regards,
    Chris

  • Can I use an Airport Extreme as a modem and wireless router?

I realize this shows my ignorance, but I am wondering if I need to lease my isp's (Comcast) modem or if I can use and Airport Extreme instead.  Thanks for your help.

AirPort Extreme is a router only.....no modem on board.....so you will need a modem to work with the AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to access the Internet.

  • Cannot get to advanced options on Airport Extreme

My new Airport Extreme is connected to my new MacBook Air and I have an internet connection. I'd like to get to the advanced options as described on page 24 of the Airport Extreme instruction booklet but have not been able to do so.
It says "Choose the wireless network you want to change. On a Mac, use the Airport status menu in the menu bar." I don't know what that means.
I have the Airport Utility running. It shows the internet and the Airport Extreme. I highlight the Airport Extreme graphic and click Base Station in the menu bar, but it does not show Manual Setup as an option, as it seems it should.
By the way, there's a red circle with a "1" in it next to the Airport Extreme graphic. What does that mean?
    Thank you.

My new Airport Extreme is connected to my new MacBook Air and I have an internet connection. I'd like to get to the advanced options as described on page 24 of the Airport Extreme instruction booklet but have not been able to do so.
It sounds like you are using version 6.0 of the AirPort Utility. The instructions on page 24 are actually referring to the 5.x version of this utility. You can download the lasted (5.6) here.
Please try those instructions again after using the 5.6 version. If you still have issues or questions, please post back.

  • When Canon MP460 is shut off, Airport Extreme fails to detect it!

There is no problem detecting the printer initially. However, if it gets turned off and on again, AE does not recognize it has a USB printer attached to it! The only solution I have is to restart the AE - then it realizes it has a printer attached. Any ideas about this one guys?? Thanks a bunch,
    Adam
    Airport Extreme, Canon MP460

I have the same issue with a Canon i9900. Does not
recognize printer unless I unplug the USB cable after
    it is turned on.
Unplugging and plugging the USB cable back in does not help. The base station only seems to detect the printer if I restart it. I have no idea why turning the printer on and off would cause this to happen. Is there a more official way to submit bugs like this to apple?

I have an optimum on line cable modem connected to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band.
Ethernet cables connect it 1. into my new Nehalem Mac Pro, 2. into my back-up Quicksilver PowerMac. I also have 2nd gen. iPod touch works on WiFi.
This set-up has been working well but now I daily get the above error. Sometimes it says also: You have different locations set-up and it asks me to go through the set-up procedure. May be I did the initial set-up incorrect. I don't quite understand "locations" and it's purpose.
Can you tell what's telling you about those locations? An Apple AirPort unit can maintain different "configurations" so that it could be used in different locations without a complete reconfiguration. However, I don't believe they're ever referred to as "locations". On the other hand, a Mac can have multiple "locations" defined in the Network panel of System Preferences. Those can be useful if the Mac is used in different places with different arrangements.
If your AirPort Extreme is having problems the status light on the front will probably be amber. If you launch AirPort Utility and double-click on the AirPort Extreme item on the left, you should be able to see more details about the problem.

  • How do i change the Nat type 3 to type 2 for my Ps3 on Airport Extreme?

I have search the internet trying to find ways to do this but nothing has helped. Some people tell me to airport utility and then to internet and then to NAT. But, no NAT tab shows up for me. I'm trying to change it from NAT 3 to 2 so it can work better with my PS3. Thank you.

Is your AirPort Extreme the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to an Internet broadband modem and not another router? If so, the following is how you would configure the Extreme for Port Mapping:
    1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the PS3.
    Internet > DHCP tab
On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
    Reserve address by: MAC Address
    Click Continue.
MAC Address: <enter the MAC hardware address of the PS3>
    IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
    Click Done.
    2. Setup Port Mapping on the AXn.
    Advanced > Port Mapping tab
    Click the "+" (Add) button
Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the PS3>
Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
    Click "Continue"
