Special ui effects in CS5

Is the reason I can't see a brush's size and feather with the red preview because my machine is 32bit instead of 64? I could see that red preview in CS4, but not in the new CS5 (it's activated by click-control-option with the brush tool).
If so, is this also why I can't see the 3D Bristle Brush preview? Both the Bristle Brush and the keyboard shortcuts for brush shapes do work, I just can't see their preview UI's.

That means that your video card or driver are not up to the requirements for using OpenGL in Photoshop CS5.
Yes, without an OpenGL capable card, all the OpenGL dependent effects and commands will be disabled.

Hello,
I am trying to put a special 3D effect on a font. I don't know how describe it, thus here is a link where you can see it:

I already know that the font is Agency FB. I don't care about the camouflage look or about the shadow. I'm just interested in the 3D effect. Can somebody tell me, how can I get this effect with Illustrator CS5?

As I (mis)understand it, you may:
1) Type>Create Outlines and Object> Ungroup;
2) Select all letters and Object>Path>Offset Path by a negative amount so you get the right width of the bevels between the inner and outer lettershapes;
3) Select the inner lettershapes, copy them, and hide the copies;
4) Select everything, change from fill to stroke, and Object>Compound Path>Release;
5) To rip the shapes apart, perform (the bare steps in the script/action James has made, see below):
5a) Select>Object>Direction Handles;
5b) Edit>Cut;
5c) Delete;
5d) Edit>Paste In Front;
6) To create the bevels, combine pairs of corresponding inner and outer paths (which formed segments of the inner and outer lettershapes):
6a) Select inner and outer path;
6b) Object>Path>Join;
6c) Select all and change from stroke to fill;
7) Show the copies of the inner lettershape paths hidden in 3).
Now you have all the parts as separate closed paths, and you can colour them as desired.
There may be less silly ways.

After effects / Premiere CS5 64bit

After effects / Premiere CS5 64bit unable to load. It's giving me error "runtime error this application has requested the Runtime...."
I've exhausted all possible options and i'm quite frustrated right now. I've reinstalled my Win 7 64 bit and reinstalled the application numerous times however the same fault keeps on happening.
I've reinstalled new drivers for my GeForce 8400 GS. still no help. Please help! Others which is running 32 bit (flash, fireworks, dreamweaver....) is working fine. Only those which is 64 bit, premiere, after effects is giving me this error. Please help me.

Highly doubtful this card is usable in any way much less certified by Adobe - not only is it old to begin with, but it's also one of those trimemd down models from the budget tray. It might at best work, if you removed OpenGL support from AE compeltely, but Premiere will remain problematic. Also this seems like a clear indicator that your computer is 5 years or older and in that case, your processor may simply not be compatible which would apply to several Core2Duo types, some AMD processors and Pentium 4. If you think your processor is compatible regardless, then it may need a special driver/ patch/ DLL, so check and install that...

I'm a newbie to Illustrator. My friend did a special shadow effect using the non-professional program Microsoft Publisher. Here's a quick link I made to see a sample:

In Microsoft Publisher, apparently there is a built-in filter called "apply rear shadow."
There must be an eay way to do this in Illustrator CS4 other than create two copies of the same word and skew one of them. Is there an easier way? Can anyone help?

There isn't a specific command or option for that kind of "floor" drop shadow. One can devise a number of realtively simple workarounds. Here's one:
1. Select the text object.
2. Appearance Palette flyout menu: Add New Fill. Select the fill listing.
3. Effect>Distort&Transform>FreeDistort. In the resulting dialog, move the the top two handles of the preview bounding box as desired.
4. Use the text object to define a Graphic Style, so you can repeat it on other objects with a single click.
Using that method, you can create the shadow as long or short as you want, and even add "perspective" foreshortening. You can also include other Effects in the Style, such as blurring.

Thanks guys for your input and feedback. The group is doing pretty well. We seem to be growing with each meeting, and for someone that's never run a group before, I feel like I'm getting the hang of it. There have been some bumps here and there, but things are getting smoother with each meeting.
The thing that I'm currently trying to figure out is what makes people want to come out one night a month to such a group. I'm a member of, or I attend, other video/film production groups here in San Diego, and I meet PPro users all the time - our ranks are growing. Some tell me that they want to attend (but then never/hardly do), and others show little to no interest. I'd like to figure out how to reach them - what's it take to get them to come out every month or at least more often? I realize time and/or family commitments can make it hard, but what could the group provide that would make it really hard to pass up? If there was a PPro user group in your area, what would you want from it - networking with other users? Tips and tricks for editing? Demos of plug-ins or effects? Showing members projects for feedback? Troubleshooting sessions? Something else?
We try and do all of those things I've listed, but I'm just curious to find out from those who don't attend a group - what would get you to show up?
Adobe provides excellent support. I really can't say enough good things about them. We raffle off two copes of the latest Creative Suite every year (courtesy of Adobe), as well as other swag they send my way. And the PPro team is starting to get in on the act as well - I'm really excited to have the PPro product manager visiting the group.

Missing effects in cs5. Error message when I add presets.

So I'm new to AE, and need some help. When I add the "rotate over time" animation preset to a title, it says "this favorite contains 1 reference to a missing effect. Please install the following effect to restore this reference". Does anyone know how I can get this worked out? Everything is there in my effects and presets, except this error message keeps showing up when I add it. When I look in my presets folder, the transform is clearly there. Any help? Something I'm missing/overlooking?
Specs: 2010 17 in mbp, 2.53 ghz i5, 8 gb ram, 500 gb. AE cs5 10.2

Nothing to worry about. This is a so called "Pseudo Effect". More details here: http://www.batchframe.com/tutorials/12
Basically the documentation of this custom preset should have contained some code thant you need to insert into "PresetEffects.xml" and is just for naming purposes. So as long as you can live with the "missing effect" name you have nothing to worry about.

After Effects & Premiere CS5 HELP!

I purchased Adobe CS5 Master Collection through my work. IT was already opened when I got it. When I installed it every program was there to install except After Effects and Premiere. This was on my macbook pro duel cor 2.16 running snow leopard.
When I installed another copy for my pc the programs showed up but had a message saying I needed to update to run.
Why would they not even show up in the" install options window" on apple???
Isn't it true Adobe had after effects cs4 and premiere cs4 on the install cd if cs5 wouldn't run?

I believe you are mistaken Katherine and therein lies your problem, the Intel Core Duo is a 32-bit processor. Requirements for CS5 Premier and After Effects are a 64-bit processor... while the Macbook Pro with Intel Core Duo's can run 64-bit programs, they run them at 32-bit, After Effects and Premier require to be run at 64-bit and cannot be run on a 32-bit processor. Such is the case with Intel Core Duo's which are 32-bit. While you are correct when saying "all Macs automatically run 64-bit." they run 64-bit programs yes, but After Effects and Premier CS5 require the 64-bit processor. Any Mac with all the system requirements but is missing the 64-bit processor will not be able to see the install option to install Premier and After Effects CS5.
My MacBook Pro 17" (fully upgraded) with Intel Core Duo was unable to see the installation selection. But my recently acquired MacBook Pro 15" with intel i7 core was able to see the installation selection. Intel Core Duo = 32-bit.... Intel i7 Core = 64-bit

Fading A Drop Shadow - Missing 'Layer Mask Hides Effects' in CS5

I'm using CS5. I want to create a fading drop shadow on a shape/box. See the attached image below.
In Photoshop, this is easy by doing:
1) Create shape
2) Add layer mask to shape layer
3) Click gradient, set gradient to Multiply, and set gradient colors to white to black
4) Drag gradient where you want it on the shape. The drop shadow will actually bleed through the middle of the shape, and not just on the edges, which is unwanted.
5) Open up layer styles, under Blending Options, select Layer Mask Hides Effects and it will get rid of the drop shadow showing up in the middle of the shape and you will be left with perfect, faded drop shadow on the edges (see below for finished product).
Firework is missing step 5. There is no Blending Options and there is no Layer Mask Hides Effects. Or if there is, I have no found them. I am using CS5. Any ideas how to accomplish this in Fireworks?

Clone the shape. Change the color of the clone to gray and, in the properties panel, change its edge type to feather. With the clone still selected, choose Commands > Creative > Auto Vector Mask. Select the bottom, left mask type by clicking on its image, and then apply it. In the layers panel, click on the new mask group to select it. Click on the black masking object on the right of the two linked objects to activate the gradient adjustment handle. Shorten and rotate the gradient until you get the effect you want.

Saving 6.5 project(with liquify effect) into CS5 = crash?

Hi all.
I've recently upgraded a few machines from AE 6.5 and CS3 to CS5.
There's a project that was done in AE6.5, and now the client is coming back for revision.
I can open the old project in CS5, but when I save it as a new project (even Save as..), AE crashes.
Tried importing the .aep instead of opening directly, no luck also.
It crashes every time when I save.
Then, I tried removing all liquify effect from the project, and now, I can save.
Any clue anybody? Is it official that liquify from 6.5 is not supported by CS5?
(I would like to try saving it from 6.5 > cs3 > cs4 > cs5, but too bad I dont have all the versions.)

Please file a bug report.
In the meantime, I would recommend prerendering the elements that include the Liquify effect and then removing the Liquify effect before saving.

Where is lighting effects in CS5?

Photoshop Color correction and Special color Effects

Can anybody pls tell me , how they create color corrections in movies like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings. and all the other special color themes they create different images...
I use photoshop a lot but m a amateur to color correction thing .

There are many applications, that can do CC (Color Correction, often referred to as Color Grading, or sometimes just Grading). Premiere Pro has many CC Effects, and these should be done on calibrated NTSC, or PAL, monitors, and not on the computer's monitors. One reason for this is that Premiere is not a Color Managed environment.
Adobe After Effects also has many (actually quite a few more) CC Effects, and is often used for this purpose, even if one is not using it for its normal operation - compositing.
Along with those, there are many 3rd party CC plug-ins, like Red Giant's Colorista.
Once one gets past indie films, Hollywood would use workstations designed specifically for CC, with software not commonly available to the vast majority of the public. Again, the work will be done on constantly calibrated monitors, and by skilled technicians, who do nothing else, all day long. A good starting point would be the Black Magic Da Vinci system, but this really only gets one's foot in the door.
To get a handle on CC for Video, I recommend The Arit and Technique of Digital Color Correction, Hullfish.
Color Correction in Video is a subject, where popluar books will fill a large library.

Is there a list somewhere of the effects that are GPU accelerated in CS5? Can someone provide a list or tell me if the following specific effects are GPU accelerated.
1) Fast Color
2) 3 Way Color
3) Color Balance RGB
4) Horizontal Flip
5) Crop
6) Auto Color
7) Auto Contrast
8) Auto Levels
9) Shadow/Highlight
10) Cross Dissolve Transition

-- It's all subjective and the final answer is based on what works for you and may even be seperated on a use-by-use basis. If the 'Autos' give you satisfactory results (in real-time) go for it... if not... don't. They may work this time but not the next -and Vice Versa.
