Specific Clients Taking up Multiple RDS CALs

We use per device CALs on our Windows 2012 License server. We have 150 device CALs installed. We have about 45 thin clients logging into Windows 2012 server to get to their point of sale software. Our problem here is not the thin clients taking multiple
licenses but it's the administrator's computers taking multiple licenses. I use RDC Manager to attach to the terminal servers on Windows 8. Other Admins here don't use RDC Manager, just the RDP app. They are using Windows 7. We are all getting multiple
RDP CALs assigned to them.
My computer has over 30 permanent CALs assigned to it. There are days when my computer will take up 7 or 8 licenses. I have over 100 temporary licenses assigned to my computer!!
If a user calls and their terminal is getting a license error, I can go in and revoke one of the licenses for my computer, they get logged in fine. Do a refresh of the RD License Manager and I can see the terminal that user was having license problems on
has a license from a week ago and the only new license handed out at that time is issued BACK to my computer!!!
If I install more licenses, our computers start eating them up. We had MS look into this about 2 months ago and they rebuilt the server and now we are back where we were at 2 months ago. Tried to re-contact MS on this but I have been waiting for 2 weeks
for them to call back.

Hi Danny,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As suggested by TP earlier, have you tried to rebuild the RD License server with its database?
In addition, you can refer following article for information.
RD Licensing Configuration on Windows Server 2012
http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2013/09/20/rd-licensing-configuration-on-windows-server-2012.aspx
Apart suggest you to still contact MS clearing house for further help as they are best person for license related information.
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

  • Assign RDS CAL to specific device.

Is it possible to assign a RDS CAL to a specific device? In other words manually doing it instead for letting the license server do it, or even if the license server does it, i tell it which devices I want to get the CALs. I yes, how. This is a Win Server
    2008 R2 standard version. TIA.

    Hi,
Unfortunately there is no option to pre-assign a RDS CAL to a specific device.  The RDS Per Device CAL is assigned to the device when a user successfully connects to a RDSH server at least twice.

  • Multiple RDS servers in one domain

    Hi
We are trying to create a new setup using Windows Server 2012 R2 where customers rent their own server. In this setup we will make all servers members of the same domain and then seperate the users by Groups and OU's.
The problem that I am facing is that since every customer has a specific need for performance, storage, applications etc. we cannot really just create a big RDS farm with a lot of powerful servers, but instead we have to create a RDS-server for each customer.
Now my question is how to do this in the right way. My first idea was to make a complete single server RDS setup for each customer where the roles installed by a standard RDS deployment is installed on each server which is then assigned a public IP and a
FQDN for the customer to connect to. But will this work if they are all members of the same domain and how do we control licensing if we want to host the RD Licensing role on another server in the domain?

    Hi Kenneth,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Yes, we can have multiple server in single domain. You can create different session host according to your requirement for the users assign permission and all on that server. All different session host server will join with connection broker installed. For
making connection stable and available all time, you can have RDCB High Availability. In addition need to purchase trusted certificate for connection stability.
For RD Licensing server to work, you need RDS CAL to access by different users. There are 2 types of RDS CAL (Per User & Per Device) and need to purchase according to your requirement. Before that you need to activate the RD Licensing server and then can
install all RDS CAL. Also see that you need to point all the RD Session Host server to RD Licensing server for proper functioning.
You can go through below link for setting up RDS with proper solution.

    2. Specify a License Server for an RD Session Host Server to Use (For reference)

  • Why are there so many different prices for RDS CALS

I'm needing Windows Server 2008 r2 with 10 server CALS and 10 RDS CALS. When I search for a source online I see 10 RDS CALS selling as low as 220.00 and as high as 500.00.
My question is: How do I know the lower priced item is the same as the higher prices item?

    Hi,
Microsoft has multiple licensing programs, each targeted at specific types of organizations, with different qualifications to join and different pricing.  For example, there is a licensing program for non-profits that allows
them to purchase licenses at a greatly reduced price.  The page below provides information on the different licensing programs:

Hi, Trying it once more to give more clarity of my scenario.
I have to navigate from 1 screen to the other by picking a given table record/row from the 1st screen. While displaying the record on the 2nd screen the catch is that, I have to display it as many times as the value in a cell of the selected record.
    eg.
    screen 1
    col1   col2     col3
    2 order1 item1
    [next]
On clicking next it should look like
    screen2
    col1           col2            col3           col4
    order1 item1
    order1 item1
where col3 and col4 will be editable by the user and col1 is the value depends how many times i have repeat the row/record
    Hope this give more clarity.

  • Windows 2012 RDS CALs - OLP NL downgrade to Windows 2003 TS CALs

    Hi,
Hope someone can shed some light on this inquiry
I plans to purchase the following:
2x Windows 2014 SQL STD 2 Core License OLP NL
30 Windows 2012 RDS CALs (User or Device) OLP NL
               Breakdown example
                Site A = 10
                Site B = 5
                Site C = 15
Existing servers are Windows 2003 R2 STD running Terminal Services
Tried setting up a Windows 2003 R2 TS Server and install TS Roles & Licensing Manager
    Questions.
     1. When I tried to add Windows 2003 TS CALs - OLP NL, the activation screen requires to enter the Authorization & License numbers.
Can I use the Authorization and License number of the newly purchased Windows 2012 RDS CALs on the Windows 2003 TS Server?
     2. Should I get a separate Authorization & License number per site? (In the example above 3x Authorization & License numbers). Or can we use a single Authorization & License number for all sites? Each site is independent from each
    other.
     3. As I understand, SQL 2014 can be downgraded to any prior previous version at the same editions. (as far as SQL 2000, provided he has the installer), If client has an existing SQL 2003 STD activated already, does he need to change the license key?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Yes, you can use newly purchased server 2012 RDS CAL on server 2003 terminal server.
RDS and TS CAL Interoperability Matrix
For detail regarding the licensee issue I suggest you to contact MS Volume Licensing.
As per my research, I think you don’t have to change the old license key if client already have the key. And in regards to SQL server you can have a look over beneath article.

  • Using Windows Server 2012 per-User RDS CAL on Server 2008 R2 Session Host

I have a Remote Desktop Licensing Server setup on my domain controller running Windows Server 2012 R2. I have installed a
’Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services per-User CAL’ there and activated the licensing server already.
Currently I use ONLY Windows Server 2008 R2 machines as RDS Session Hosts (in the future I plan to transition them to 2012 R2, hence the CAL I bought is
    already in the newest version).
I have already configured my WS 2008 RDS Session Hosts: set
Per-User licensing mode and specified license server address. The connectivity between my Session Host(s) and my License Server seems to be ok as the
Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration window on the Session Host correctly lists the 2012 per-user
license (CAL installed on server) from the license server.
On the License Server I can also see event logs entries (in
Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing/Admin), indicating that the user has been issued a license.
The issue I am having is that the license being issued is
2008 Per User CAL license (Build-in OverUsed - temporary) and not the 2012 Per User CAL license which is the only license installed on the server. According to the RDS CAL interoperability matrix at
social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14988.rds-and-ts-cal-interoperability-matrix.aspx, I was expecting the 2012 license to be backward-compatible with 2008 client (and that
in the absence of legacy licenses, the (only) 2012 license would be used for all clients connecting to the licensing server)
Before I bought my license, I found this document:
    download.microsoft.com/download/3/D/4/3D42BDC2-6725-4B29-B75A-A5B04179958B/WindowsServerRDS_VLBrief.pdf
which says that - "newer version RDS CALs can be used with an older version of the server software" (In section FAQ, Q4), which means to me that
the 2012 license would work as-is for the 2008 Server and gives me flexibility when upgrading to the new server version.
How can I make this CAL work in my environment?
    Note:
    I have already explicitly disabled
Prevent license upgrade Group Policy setting which I assumed would fix the issue but nothing has changed.
Then I have enabled License server security group Group Polity setting
and added computers from my domain to RDS Endpoint Servers AD group. I have also created new AD group called
Terminal Server Computers and added the computer accounts there, but it changes
    nothing. Reference - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee791761.aspx , technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725704.aspx and blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/09/17/control-the-issuance-of-rds-cals.aspx.
I found one potential ‘workaround’ which involved manually downgrading my CAL license by calling
Microsoft Clearinghouse. I am very reluctant do to so because, as I upgrade parts of my infrastructure to Server 2012, I’d need to then ask Microsoft to manually upgrade a part of my license back as well.
Am I missing something? What should I do to get my 2012 CAL to be issued to 2008 R2 server

Hi, I have tried several other possibilities.
I change expire date for my temporary assigned license (2008 CAL overused). It can be done, by changing Active Directory user properties – msTSExpireDate. When I restart my Session Host server and logged again, my license was renewed
for next 60 days (event ID - 4145).
I also delete information about license for this user (clear msTSExpireDate and msTSLicenseVersion). And the license was successfully removed from License Manager. After another SH restart it gets the same – 2008 overused – license
(event ID 4143 - license server has successfully issued …)
I now, that changing info in AD attributes is a little trick, and this is not a real value - only a reference, but it was useful to delete or change expiration date of license. But it didn’t change type of license as I expected.

    To TP:
I have found your post with information:
If you have a Server 2012 RD Licensing server you may install your 2012 RDS CALs on it (no downgrade necessary) and then set your Server 2008 R2 RDSH to
use the 2012 RDL server.  The 2012 RD Licensing server will automatically issue the CALs as 2008. -

  • Broadcast to specific client

    Hi all,
I would like to know if it's posible to send the same data to many specific clients My goal is to avoid the overhead of copying the data to multiple outputstreams/sockets.
    Thanks

    There is broadcasting and multicasting.
Broadcasting works over "short distances", i.e. your local network segment. Your firewalls and routers will block it. Google for java udp broadcast. Broadcasting and UDP are inherently unreliable; if a client drops a packet, the sender won't know it. Or a client might receive packets out of order, or duplicated.
For multicasting, google for java multicast socket or even java multicast socket tutorial. Multicasting sends to a given list of clients (the multicast group).
I haven't done multicasting but I suspect multicasts may not get through routers and firewalls unless they support multicasting and have been specifically configured to allow multicast traffic through. Write (or google for) a simple test first and try it in your network environment. And google for multicast firewall etc etc.

  • Designating the specific client certificate to use from within an applet

With JRE 1.4.x, my applet will use a specific client certificate for connection to an https url which requires a client certificate - I did that by defining runtime parameters for the jre (-Djavax.net.ssl.keyStore=...) but with JRE 1.5.x, the same runtime options doesn't seem to have any effect (even if I configure the plugin not to use the browser's store of certificates).
I like the new "use browser certifcate store" feature of the JRE 1.5.x, but can I have a way to designate, programmatically in the code of my applet, which specific certificate to use?

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • How to get no.of users in a specific client

    HI,
I need to find the no of users in a specific client , but i don't have accounts to all the clients.  I tried from one client where i have the account and executed SE16N and table usr02  got only client specific users list. And as per my understanding USR02 is a client speicific table.
What is the best to find the no of  users for all the clients  , is it possible from SQL query lik select count(*)from usr02 where mandt etc.. ? or is there any best way ?
    Regards
    Veeramalla.

    Hi venkatesh,
Incase you can access the database you can take the dump of user count in all the clients using the below mentioned queries
    Select count(bname) from <schema>.usr02 where mandt='xxx';
You need to run this for each client.
Another alternative is to create an aBAP program in the client for which u have access to get the details.
Code could have the following lines
    data: number(6); clientno(3);
parameters: clientlist like t000-mandt;  //fill in this clientlist parameter with the list of clients u have in ur system
    clientno= 1
    loop
    if clientno < 40
       Select count(bname) into number from <schema>.usr02 where mandt= clientlist(clientno);
        clientno = clientno + 1
        clear number;
    else
      exit;
    endloop.

  • Obtaining reference to a specific client

How can we obtain reference to a specific client?

There are five primary ways to obtain a reference to a remote object:
    0. It can be returned by a lookup of a remote registry
    1. It can be read from an ObjectInputStream
    2. It can be the result of a method call
    3. It can be passed as a method argument
    4. It can be broadcast over the network via UDP
Essentially, a remote object reference is no different than any other serialisable object.

  • Role of clients in CRM Multiple Backend Scenario

Does the CRM Multiple Backend Scenario only apply to a single client pointed to multiple CRM or ERP systems.
All the relevant tables are client dependent in CRM 2007 and the client independent ones use logical destinations which can easily be pointed todifferent clients.
We want to point different clients on a CRM or ERP system to multiple back ends, but each client will only have a single client that it points to.
    For example
CRM (dev) client 100 is connected to ERP (sandbox) client 100
CRM (dev) client 200 is connected to ERP (dev) client 100
CRM (test) client 100 is connected to ERP (qa) client 100
CRM (qa) client 100 is connected to ERP (qa) client 200
This will only be in the development and qa systems. Production will be a single system and client on each side.
    Regards,
    Aubrey Smith

    Aubrey,
Development will happen in only one client system. This can later be moved to Quality and further to production. All customization will also be moved same way. It may also happen that your development is cross client so if you do development on 100 , it will be available on 200 client as well.
