Specific Excel graph question for Indesign

Hello,
I have a question about how to use an image generated on Excel for mac for Adobe Indesign CC. I have browsed the forums here and googled but I'm not finding solutions for my specific question (so please bear with me, thanks). I have a report for work that requires a lot of bar graphs. The graphs are all done on Excel for mac 2011. I have tried two different ways of importing it into InDesign (also for mac) - 1) saving the graph as a PDF and then placing into InDesign, and 2) copying and pasting the Excel graph into Illustrator and then saving it as an ai file. In both cases, the ai file looks a bit better but the fonts seem a bit jarbled/compacted once I place it into InDesign. The font I use is Times New Roman. Also, since my report is laid out in a 2-column format, I need a chart to fit a space that is approximately 3 inches by 3.5 inches. Whenever I import the image, it’s significantly larger so I place it to fit the 3x3.5 inch space proportionally. When that happens, the fonts don't look quite right on the screen. I need to ensure that the chart looks sufficient once it’s printed on paper. I only recently began learning InDesign (self-taught) so your advise is appreciated.

First, the preview may be at a lower quality, so see how it looks with View > Display Performance > High Quality Display set. Second, ID always displays some sort of preview on screen, but uses the actual image data for output, so export a page to PDF and print it to judge the quality.

  • Question for InDesign pros...

    Is it possible to use InDesign to automate the creation of brochures for my clients via the web?  I would like to have a single InDesign template that my clients would fill out with photos and text via my website.  The options for photos and text would be fixed and they would not be allowed to customize the template to allow for more text or changing the layout of the photos. Their data would then be saved to a database which could be recalled at a later time.
    Then, if this works, the next step would be to have Adobe Flash show the clients what their brochure would look like before printing via the web.
    Any help is greatly appreciated... thanks!!!

    What kind of notification do you need?
    SInce you are the one modifying the document, you should already know that you did that. No?
    FWIW, I'd probably handle something like this by writing a log of changes to either a text file or a database.
    If you need fancier stuff, (again, I don't know what you are after), you might be able to use scripting events to react to certain changes. If that's not enough, you'd probably need to write a plugin which attaches observers which record changes...

  • Graph plugins for Indesign and Illustrator

    Hi.
    Anyone used any decent CC plugins for generating graphs more easily than they are in Illustrator?

    Hello Paul bloxham
    I don’t know much about any decent plugins for Illustrator, however I sometimes make graphs using Microftsoft Word then export/copy into Illustrator, then manipulate within illustrator if needed, not used Apples Numbers or other free software as yet to make any comment, but I do get satisfactory results from using Word.
    Hope this is of help.

  • Question for active X excel experts

    My question is this how do I create multiple charts on the same page using Labview?  Please look at my program to get a better idea of what I like to do.  Basically I have 2-D array of clusters of 4 elements (Y1, Y2, X1, X2), which define the range of the plot.  Each row in the 2-D array has 2 clusters which will be plotted as series 1 and series 2 on a plot.  I am indexing that two dimention array to creat multiple plots, each of which contains two series/graphs.

    Hi joeycao,
    To get a general idea of which sequence of commands you'll need to use to create these charts and configure them as you like, your best bet is to record a macro in Excel, doing the steps, and then later examine which are used. You'll then be able to use invoke nodes to make these ActiveX calls in the proper sequence.
    Please refer to this knowledgebase, Using National Instruments Software to Control Microsoft Excel with ActiveX
    for a description of how to do this.
    Hopefully that gets you started on the right path.

  • Trying to create and excel graph and having trouble finding properties and methods for active x.

    I am trying to use Active X in labview 7 to create an excel graph and the HasMajorGridlines property for charts is not in my menu. Where can I get this property and others that appear to be missing and what is a good resource (looking for anything, especially books) for for using activeX/Labview/excel together?

    I am not sure if there is a book or tutorial how to use excel with LabView. I ncluded a Vi which gives you access to the HasMajorGridlines property. I hope it gives you the clou how to work with excel obejcts...

  • Text Hyperlink from PDF (converted Word doc) to specific Excel cell in same Portfolio

    Good Morning,
    I have created a Word document with an embedded Excel sheet (both Office 2007) and created a text hyperlink within the document that points to a specific cell on a specific tab. My company wants to send our document to a customer, but will only send PDFs. When converting to PDF the hyperlink does not work any longer.
    To make the behaviour in Word one must open the embedded Excel object to the specific sheet and then copy the specific cell in question. In Word choose Paste as Hyperlink. Press Alt+F9 and then change HYPERLINK to hyperLINK. Press Alt+F9. Edit the Settings of the Hyperlink and change the Text to Display.
    Is there a way to do this with Acrobat 10? The plus side would be that the Excel document would not be embedded in Word although it would still need the Document ID of the Excel file in the portfolio. Futhermore, the Word document won't be included in the portfolio.

    While Acrobat cannot pass opening parameters to non-PDF files it can do so for PDF (under specific circumstances).
    See the "Parameters for Opening PDF Files" document at:

  • Excel graph images not displaying

    We are having trouble with the Excel Gadget suite in that everything is working apart from the displaying of Excel graphs within the portlets, in that we get the red cross displayed instead. Having read some earlier postings on this they indicated the problem might be due to the ISAPI filter on the server hosting the Excel Gadget Suite.
    Having looked at this there are 2 ISAPI filters on that box, the Excel Downloader and one called Exchfilt with the Excel one being second in the list. So
    Is the Exchfilt another filter used by the portal, possibly for Exchange gadgets, or can I safely delete it?Does the sequence make any difference or shuld I make Excel the top of the list?Are there any other debugging techniques others have used to get to the bottom of this type of problem?Thanks in advance,
    Ross

  • Excel Graph Axis Title

    Hi all,
    Is there a way of naming the axes titles of an excel plot created using the Report Generation Toolkit? There does not seem to be such an option in the excel specific functions of the toolkit... Could it be done through activeX?? I tried to follow the suggestions in the link below but no luck...
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/labview-excel-2007-Axis-title/m-p/1226794/highlight/true#M521825
    Thanks a lot for your time..

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    I have attached a VI incl. many useful active-x commands for plotting graphs to excel. It is a large VI but it includes what you are looking for.. Scroll to the right and locate the 8th active-x box called chartwizard. This is what you are looking for. I have added constants indicating were the name of each axis goes in the wizard box. If you are not familiar with the rest of the active x commands just follow the sequence and you'l' be able to plot an excel graph fully customised through labview.
    Hope it is of help

  • VB Script That Detects if A Specific Excel File is Open

    Hi Guys,
    I'm trying to move away from Task Scheduler as my trigger for opening an Excel file. The problem there is it has a minimum of 5 min interval (I need at least 30 sec) and If the process of the initial instance of the Excel file is longer than the usual that
    after 5 min another instance executes it messes up my memory bandwidth. What I want is to use VB Script that first check if a particular Excel file is open if yes then wait for another 30 sec to check.
    Question: What is the right syntax/code for detecting a specific Excel file and loops every 30 sec. But I also want to be able to end the loop if I want to.
    Here is my current code:
    Gateway Timeout
    RequestURI=http://timeentry/
    Set Recordset = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
    ConnString = "DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver}; SERVER=PHMNWWKS027604; DATABASE=db_skusetup; " &_
    "UID=root;PASSWORD=; OPTION=3"
    'Check for Export Query'
    Recordset.ActiveConnection = ConnString
    exportSQL = "SELECT * FROM tb_queue_export WHERE request_status = 'Pending' ORDER BY request_id DESC LIMIT 1"
    Recordset.Open exportSQL
    Set objExcelExtract = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
    Set objWorkbookExtract = objExcelExtract.Workbooks.Open("C:\Users\ushuam00\Desktop\LAPTOP.xlsx")
    If objWorkbookExtract.ReadOnly then
    if Recordset.Fields(3) <> "" then
    end if
    end if
    test= MsgBox(Recordset.Fields(3),3,Recordset.EOF)
    Recordset.Close
    ReadOnly is not doing it for me.

    The only way to test it is to open it. Just open writable and, if the file is open you open with fail  then loop and try again until you can open it.  Once open just execute your macro.
    This can loop until you can open the file.
    Set xl = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
    Do While True
    Set wb = xl.WorkBooks.Open("C:\scripts\test.xlsx")
    If wb.ReadOnly Then
    MsgBox "readonly"
    wb.Close()
    Else
    MsgBox "OK"
    Exit Do
    End If
    WScript.Sleep 5000
    Loop
    xl.Quit
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Problems installing digital publishing update for Indesign CS6

    Hello,
    I am having some problems installing update I need for Indesign CS6. I'm working on an interactive pdf and need to update my version of cs6 to use the digital publishing suite. Upon attempts to use the 'folio builder' I am asked to update and go to 'help' 'updates'. The Adobe Patch installer begins to load then immediately crashes. I have tried installing the publishing update from adobe licensing but the same problem happens when I attempt to install the file using the patch installer.
    I'm using CS6 version 8.0, can anyone help?
    Thanks

    JulianLister I would recommend reviewing your installation logs to determine the cause of your current difficulties.  You can find information on how to locate and interpret your installation log files at Troubleshoot with install logs | CS5, CS5.5, CS6 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cs5-cs5.html.
    Please feel free to post any specific error messages you are receiving to this discussion thread if you have any questions.

  • Excel Graphs using Office Report Generation

    I'm using Office Report Generation and I would like to add a grpah to my excel spreadsheet using existing excel spread sheet data.
    Right now the only way I can add a grpah is to load the data into labview and create a graph in a 2d array.  However that way the graph has no linkage to the data in the exc el spreadsheet.  I can't use a template to create the graph then load the data because different results require different methods.  However if I could modify an existing graph within labview I could use the template but I can't index a now labview created graph.
    Can anyone suggest anything?

    Hello,
    Thanks for posting to the NI Discussion Forums!  I think you might
    be right, and there might not be a conventional way to create your
    graph from the Report Toolkit (after all this is designed more to
    create a report from known and unchanging data that you can move to
    excel for demo purposes).  There might be some other ways to do
    this.
    My first recommendation if you would like to stick with the Report Gen.
    VIs, you can design an Excel Macro to generate a graph from the
    spreadsheet.  LabVIEW can execute the Excel Macro through the
    Report VIs (see the Report Generation->Excel Specific->Excel
    Advanced->Excel Macros palette).  There are some good examples
    and documentation out there about calling Excel Macros:

    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/manuals/323805A-01/RepGenUG_07/
    If you do not want to use the macros, you might have more luck using
    ActiveX, or other means in which to interface with Excel than are
    provided in the Report Generation Toolkit.  There are countless
    examples and discussions about Excel, LabVIEW and ActiveX so I won't
    spend too much time here on it, but if you think you might want to use
    this as an option, let us know and I can see about finding some
    examples on it for you.
    Hopefully this helps!  Please let us know how things go.
